Comal Berkeley Reviews from The Last Year
Nice back patio.
Staff is fine but needs to be more attentive, my order was wrong + I had to chase them down to correct it because no one asked if everything was ok. Issue was resolved quickly and professionally, stuff happens. Food is very subpar. It is the sooo bland, I've had better Mexican food in hospital cafeterias. I asked for their most spicy hot sauce to try make the food less bland, even that was soft. I also think their prices are too high, $16 for two tacos? Anyway, if you like your Mexican food to taste like cafeteria food with higher quality ingredients and don't mind over paying, it is a good place to go. They get two stars because the back patio is really nice and the staff is friendly. Their Next Door spot is also bland and expensive.
Came here with a group for dinner.
It was absolutely delicious. The food was abundant, the salad was delicious, I enjoyed each section of food and the drink I had. Service was fast and even though the had to substitute a few dishes, we had a great time. The back patio is a great place to sit out by the fireplace with heaters outside if it cools down.
Pretty decent meal here.
Came here because of a Gastropod podcast episode on its unique acoustics. Not sure I totally appreciated the effect, and there was music playing, but it wasn't too loud. Highlights were an eggplant/seed dip and a salad. Maybe next time have a salad with some kind of protein added.

It was July 4th, and we were looking to escape the heat in Walnut Creek. We headed to Dona but discovered they were closed, so we called Comal. They said they had plenty of room, so we headed over there. Anyone giving this restaurant low marks for not being "real" Mexican food is missing the nuance of artistry and pride in cooking. This food was nothing short of amazing. From the ceviche and the plantains with eggplant pumpkin seed hummus to the roasted chicken tamales and carnitas tacos with nectarines, each dish was better than the previous. The drinks were masterful as well. Great ambiance with a great aesthetic. Service was spot on and the food came super quick. We will be returning.
loved the flan.
And the enchiladas. And the tequila shots! But most of all, the wait staff, hostesses and back-up crew were all super-nice, helpful and friendly. Plus, considering the food quality, service and atmosphere, it wasn't all that expensive.
Well described in Intro aa Mexican-inspired, I found Comal
Well described in Intro aa Mexican-inspired, I found Comal to be very good. Open and nice interior that invited a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Food was interesting and inventive. Staff was friendly and attentive. Pricing seemed fair and I think they include a tip that is shared by the staff. I would definitely come back. Most likely before a show.
This has been a great spot for both family and date nights
This has been a great spot for both family and date nights :) service is always friendly, and they're always willing to share their favourite dishes on the menu with us. I love the rotating menu of the seasons, and the flavours that each dish brings to my palate! There is no dish you can go wrong with.
Great Mexican spot in Berkeley.
Great atmosphere, service and the food is solid. Love the drinks and feel of the place. Definitely give it a shot.
We chose Comal to host a 50th birthday celebration.
It was the event of a lifetime. Not only is the space so beautiful, but cocktails, food, and service are top notch. I wouldn't hesitate to host another event there for a second. And anyone who's considering it - just do it! You won't be disappointed. Thank you to all the staff for making our night such fun and so easy!
Great staff, love the ambience and patio, and consistently
Great staff, love the ambience and patio, and consistently tasty menu. One of my favorite berkeley spots. Bartenders are so fun, sit at the bar!
No food the whole night, left hungry
The problem was that since I've restrictions (chilly and hot spicy foods) they were not able to accommodate any dishes to my limitations, except boiled beans which had no flavour. I was part of a group dinner and even though the organizers forwarded all my restrictions to the restaurant in advance and ensured me the restaurant will arrange so that I can eat something, to my big disappointment the waiter confirmed they can't change anything because everything was preprepared and ready made. So I ended up eating nothing except 1 teaspoon of beans, but still paid my part of the group dinner. In contrast, I ate at a Mexican restaurant in Sausalito and even though I walked in, the servant arranged me food that met my restrictions, such as chicken tacos and cheviche sans chilly. So not sure why Comal did not tell my dinner organisers that they can't make changes, in which case I'd have skipped that dinner? Looks like they did not care, but that ruined my evening because during the 4 h dinner I was starving and had to go to sleep hungry.
Definitely worth going!
Friendly service with spectacular food and reasonably priced. We had a front window table and the ambiance was perfect.
Did not meet expectations!
I was so excited to go to Comal as it was listed as a “must-go” place in Berkeley. As it is considered a pioneer in high-end Mexican food. Honestly, I was not impressed - it was average in quality and the waitstaff could not wait to get you out. Now, the margaritas were excellent.

Thank you for the question, if a seller is working on answering your bid, you cannot cancel it until their time is up and the bid is released back to you. The full amount of funds then go back into your AT account. Typically a seller has 48-72 hours to complete the bid.
