Comedy Cellar New York Reviews from The Last Year
Not with it .. AT ALLLLLLL
Literally WACKKKKK .. the people at the door act like they are so superior ,. I get the wait , I get the stand by,, but it looks like it’s painful for them to smile or be kind. We all have jobs we hate.. but when you’re dealing with people, be nice…
One of our favorite NYC outings.
We got lucky enough to get tickets for the MacDougal Street location. All the comedians were hilarious and the service was very attentive. Our seats were in the very back corner, but we could still mostly see. Can't wait to go back!
Eh it was fine.
booking was iffy and calling wasn't great, but in person dealing with reservations was best. The comics are okay. You can't have your cellphone without putting in sealed postage envelope because they're too busy pushing crowd work and want to record your mundane reactions for social media content.

For my first time in NYC, I had to visit the legendary Comedy Cellar, and it did not disappoint! We started with dinner at the Olive Tree Cafe, which is connected, and the food and service were great. Chill atmosphere and friendly staff. The show was awesome, and a special guest made an unscheduled appearance. The unscheduled appearance was a bonus in my opinion (A huge bonus, but a bonus nonetheless. You never know who may show up...) The show would have been fun without the bonus guest. Stand up is art and the crowd and comedians can vary, so you gotta be open to roll with whatever happens. Go in with an open mind, and enjoy the experience of it all and you can't go wrong. We had a fantastic experience across the board!
Night in hell (literally coz their aircondition was not working) and all were sweating like crazy
The worst experience even if the performers were funny because we had to stay for 2 hours in a place full of people and no air circulation. The establishment didn’t even mention that their air condition was not working before we register. We didn’t get the opportunity to cancel. They gave us “free water” after we checked in and thought this was standard for them. But when we were ushered into our seats and after 5 minutes we realized that the AC is not working. They also still made us order $20 per person of whatever including alcohol. The performers were sweating like a cow and looks very uncomfortable. Overall this is not truthful business.

The comedy seller is a great place to come for laughs and drinks with friends and family. We saw Margaret Cho, Bobby Lee and surprise guest Ali Wong! The comedians were hilarious. Service was great with drinks and food. Fun show and fun night for laughs
Went here multiple times while visiting New York.
The security guard is professional and operations are smooth. The comedy is random but always spot on and hilarious. Loved it. Definitely a must see when you're in town. It's chilly inside so bring a sweater. One of my favorite things about New York.
A MUST DO New York experience!
If you love to laugh and you want to have an iconic New York experience then you need to go to the Comedy Cellar. The Village Underground is their main stage and The Fat Black Pussycat is their other stage attached upstairs. They also have another venue close by and we've had a great time at all of them, but the late show at the Village Underground on a Saturday night has always been an epic experience for us because typically a celebrity comic will show up as a surprise and treat you to new material they're working on or just want to get back on a stage and make you belly laugh! This is a 5 star awesome New York thing to do!!!
You're definitely not there for the food and rink you're
You're definitely not there for the food and rink you're there to have a fantastic time in an intimate, historic setting. It's incredibly rare to get a bad comedian on stage and you sometimes get really big names in there. The location is surrounded by bars and places to eat so you can make a good night out of visiting Comedy Cellar and surrounds
Surprised that this place isn't 5 stars here.
Personally we had a terrific night, there were multiple comedians and they were all really good. The atmosphere was great and they were very clear about the 2 drink minimum requirement before we paid. (No problem with this on my end!!). The entry fee is very reasonable and the night was a blast!
When Do You Pay?
I just made an online reservation for the Comedy Cellar, and received email confirmatiion. However, there was no online payment. Do you pay when you arrive? Seems odd, and I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.
Great time flying solo at the Comedy Cellar
So much fun! I really wanted to go to the 11:30 show but was a bit hesitant going solo as a female tourist. The surrounding area is bright and lively at 11:30 and everyone at the Cellar was so friendly. They put me by other people flying solo so it was nice to have others to chat with while seated before the show. So happy I came to this historic spot, I had a really great time.
Had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs
First, you line up outside around the corner on the side street. They give you an envelope and all phones need to be sealed in the envelope. You get to hold the envelope, so your phone is always with you. They just want to attempt to ensure you don’t use it during the show. You then enter and are placed in a rather tight area while the server tries to quickly take orders before the show starts. It’s a 2-drink minimum, but those 2 drinks can be bottled water, for example. Including the host, we saw 6-7 comedians. One was from SNL and one I had seen on America’s Got Talent. Two were very funny – nonstop laughing, one was not funny and the rest were average – some laughs here and there. All in all it was a great time and I’d go back.
The most hilarious comedy show I've ever been to.
Not much else to add other then this will def be something I do for each of my guests who come into town
By far the best comedy venue on the East Coast
My wife and I are huge comedy fans, the way some folks are into sports or a favorite band. We've been to the Cellar over a hundred times and have also been to most of the comedy spots in Manhattan. While we like Stand Up New York and enjoyed Carolines before it closed, there really is nothing like the Cellar (and its sister clubs, the Village Underground, and the Fat Black Pussycat (upstairs and downstairs). There are several reasons. First of all, the physical set up of the Cellar is nonpareil. It's the quintessential brick-backed, low-ceilinged, cozy (ok, tight!) space that standup wants to be performed in; it's intimate to the point of needing an STD test after some visits! And the club has achieved so much popularity that it's never not sold-out (in fact, right now it's impossible to reserve an early Thursday show even a month ahead of time!). The crowds are generally terrific and are about an 80/20 mix of locals and out-of-towners. Equally important is the job that Estee, the booker, does in finding a nice mix of comedians: straight, gay, male, female, all demographics. That doesn't mean you'll have a "perfect" blend for the show you attend, but over the long haul, it means you'll see a huge variety of performer. And because Estee has great taste, you know that anyone showing up on that stage is top-notch. The waitstaff is always great. The managers are terrific. The people who work the door do a great job. The food is great -- way better than you'd expect. The prices are more than fair. Finally, a huge shout-out to the owner, Noam. It's no accident that everything about the Cellar is as good as it can be. He sets things up to succeed and then gets out of the way, allowing his trusted employees to do their job. I've never worked there, but I can't imagine a better boss. Check out his "Live from the Table" podcast if you want to know more about that. TL; DR: There is no better club for comedy in New York.
Just a few tips to enhance your Comedy Cellar
Just a few tips to enhance your Comedy Cellar experience: -Make a reservation! And if you don't get one, you'll probably be able to still get in with a short wait in line. -I don't think you really control it, but it's a comedy show. Use your brain and don't sit near the stage. They will try to talk to you and if you are anything like me that is a scene from a recurring nightmare. -Get some food with your drinks because they are STRONG. On our last trip, we couldn't get a res on a Saturday night but we put our name on the standby list for the 12pm, went to go find a bar and ended up finding ANOTHER COMEDY show. Obv a little more amateur but so fun. Like a little comedy appetizer. The comedy cellar show was so funny, so worth the wait, and so something I cannot wait to do again. Worth the money (you pay per ticket to get in and then there is a two drink minimum). Perfect little nyc night. Grab dinner before (because again, those drinks are strong) and have fun.
Clean intimate comedy spot.
We saw Collin Quinn. Staff was pleasant, respectful and ready to serve with a smile. Manager was awesome fixing our little issue. Wish we had more time in New York! Will come back!
Had an enjoyable night with friends here.
Always a fun time. Make sure you show up on time for your reserved time slot, and wait in the standby line outside the door.

We went on a Saturday night without reservations to the 8:45 show. If you don't have a reservation, then you stand in the standby line about one hour ahead of Showtime. Then, depending on how many people don't show up for their reservation, they let in a certain number of standby people. We lined up at 7:30 and just barely made it in.. maybe 15 people ahead of us. This place is a well oiled machine... From the standby line to the drinks and service. Everything moves very efficiently. Our comics were hilarious and pretty different from each other... none of them really did crowd work, not sure if that's common or not. I will say.. they jam you in this basement. It can be very difficult to get out of your seat to go to the bathroom so keep that in mind!
Maybe the only NYC comedy club the legends still come to.
Super crowded. Don't miss it
Everything I expected it to be
This was a massive ticket item I crossed off my bucket list. The venue is absolutely fantastic and the staff is very friendly. I was surprised with the quality of the food — chicken kebab was great, and the french fries were delicious and abundant. Coming in solo, I had to share a table with someone that also came alone. I was very lucky that I landed with someone that was nice and was also there for the show.. not everyone's cup of tea but it did work for me. ARRIVE EARLY so that you can get good seats.
My friends and I wanted to check out a show but didn't buy
My friends and I wanted to check out a show but didn't buy tickets in advance because of potential scheduling issues. The standby ticket situation was a winner for us! We got to put our names on a list, grab a drink around the corner, then got right in for a 10pm show. The seats we got were a bit awkward for your average person, but especially for me given I was dealing with a back injury but I ask to be moved so I won't fault them too much for that. We got the side of the stage because they were standby tickets but still totally worth it! The show was great, we enjoyed the variety of sets. Bonus, the chips and blue cheese were a tasty snack. It's definitely worth trying to get in without tickets and if you can't, there is plenty to do in the neighborhood! No phones were allowed so there are no photos to share.
A great comedy venue
I visited while staying in NYC over Christmas: I hadn’t heard of any of the acts but they were all funny and worth seeing (don’t go expecting to see the likes of Chris Rock and Seinfeld and you won’t be disappointed): I had a good view of the stage area but I recommend getting there early so you don’t get sat somewhere not so great: I thought the drinks were pricey but otherwise I recommend going here if you like standup comedy.
