Not with it .. AT ALLLLLLL
Literally WACKKKKK .. the people at the door act like they are so superior ,. I get the wait , I get the stand by,, but it looks like it’s painful for them to smile or be kind. We all have jobs we hate.. but when you’re dealing with people, be nice…
Be the first to ReplyNight in hell (literally coz their aircondition was not working) and all were sweating like crazy
The worst experience even if the performers were funny because we had to stay for 2 hours in a place full of people and no air circulation. The establishment didn’t even mention that their air condition was not working before we register. We didn’t get the opportunity to cancel. They gave us “free water” after we checked in and thought this was standard for them. But when we were ushered into our seats and after 5 minutes we realized that the AC is not working. They also still made us order $20 per person of whatever including alcohol. The performers were sweating like a cow and looks very uncomfortable. Overall this is not truthful business.
Be the first to ReplyA MUST DO New York experience!
If you love to laugh and you want to have an iconic New York experience then you need to go to the Comedy Cellar. The Village Underground is their main stage and The Fat Black Pussycat is their other stage attached upstairs. They also have another venue close by and we've had a great time at all of them, but the late show at the Village Underground on a Saturday night has always been an epic experience for us because typically a celebrity comic will show up as a surprise and treat you to new material they're working on or just want to get back on a stage and make you belly laugh! This is a 5 star awesome New York thing to do!!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat time flying solo at the Comedy Cellar
So much fun! I really wanted to go to the 11:30 show but was a bit hesitant going solo as a female tourist. The surrounding area is bright and lively at 11:30 and everyone at the Cellar was so friendly. They put me by other people flying solo so it was nice to have others to chat with while seated before the show. So happy I came to this historic spot, I had a really great time.
Be the first to ReplyWhen Do You Pay?
I just made an online reservation for the Comedy Cellar, and received email confirmatiion. However, there was no online payment. Do you pay when you arrive? Seems odd, and I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.
Be the first to ReplyHad a lot of fun and a lot of laughs
First, you line up outside around the corner on the side street. They give you an envelope and all phones need to be sealed in the envelope. You get to hold the envelope, so your phone is always with you. They just want to attempt to ensure you don’t use it during the show. You then enter and are placed in a rather tight area while the server tries to quickly take orders before the show starts. It’s a 2-drink minimum, but those 2 drinks can be bottled water, for example. Including the host, we saw 6-7 comedians. One was from SNL and one I had seen on America’s Got Talent. Two were very funny – nonstop laughing, one was not funny and the rest were average – some laughs here and there. All in all it was a great time and I’d go back.
Be the first to ReplyBy far the best comedy venue on the East Coast
My wife and I are huge comedy fans, the way some folks are into sports or a favorite band. We've been to the Cellar over a hundred times and have also been to most of the comedy spots in Manhattan. While we like Stand Up New York and enjoyed Carolines before it closed, there really is nothing like the Cellar (and its sister clubs, the Village Underground, and the Fat Black Pussycat (upstairs and downstairs). There are several reasons. First of all, the physical set up of the Cellar is nonpareil. It's the quintessential brick-backed, low-ceilinged, cozy (ok, tight!) space that standup wants to be performed in; it's intimate to the point of needing an STD test after some visits! And the club has achieved so much popularity that it's never not sold-out (in fact, right now it's impossible to reserve an early Thursday show even a month ahead of time!). The crowds are generally terrific and are about an 80/20 mix of locals and out-of-towners. Equally important is the job that Estee, the booker, does in finding a nice mix of comedians: straight, gay, male, female, all demographics. That doesn't mean you'll have a "perfect" blend for the show you attend, but over the long haul, it means you'll see a huge variety of performer. And because Estee has great taste, you know that anyone showing up on that stage is top-notch. The waitstaff is always great. The managers are terrific. The people who work the door do a great job. The food is great -- way better than you'd expect. The prices are more than fair. Finally, a huge shout-out to the owner, Noam. It's no accident that everything about the Cellar is as good as it can be. He sets things up to succeed and then gets out of the way, allowing his trusted employees to do their job. I've never worked there, but I can't imagine a better boss. Check out his "Live from the Table" podcast if you want to know more about that. TL; DR: There is no better club for comedy in New York.
Be the first to ReplyEverything I expected it to be
This was a massive ticket item I crossed off my bucket list. The venue is absolutely fantastic and the staff is very friendly. I was surprised with the quality of the food — chicken kebab was great, and the french fries were delicious and abundant. Coming in solo, I had to share a table with someone that also came alone. I was very lucky that I landed with someone that was nice and was also there for the show.. not everyone's cup of tea but it did work for me. ARRIVE EARLY so that you can get good seats.
Be the first to ReplyA great comedy venue
I visited while staying in NYC over Christmas: I hadn’t heard of any of the acts but they were all funny and worth seeing (don’t go expecting to see the likes of Chris Rock and Seinfeld and you won’t be disappointed): I had a good view of the stage area but I recommend getting there early so you don’t get sat somewhere not so great: I thought the drinks were pricey but otherwise I recommend going here if you like standup comedy.
Be the first to ReplyGreat organization the very funny
We didn't see any big names but everyone we saw was funny. They put your phone in a case but you get to keep it and they will play funny clips ahead of time so you'll be entertained. Seated quickly with good organization close to the stage.
Be the first to ReplyA fun night for all
Dave Attell was doing a benefit for my Temple. I walk with a cane as I have very poor vision, in addition I am 92. When I arrived and I saw all the steps, I became nervous. One of the Security personnel came over to me and said, "D'ont worry, I will get you to the elevator". He stayed with me and took me to my seat. After the show, he came back to take me upstairs. He even waited for me to use the Restroom. The show was excellent and there was no "pushing" of drinks and food. This is definitely a keeper.
Be the first to ReplyA must do?! Not anymore.
Catching a show while in the city has been a tradition, unfortunately I think it is coming to an end. We had reservations which was good. Upon checking in you have to put your phones in a plastic envelope which they seal. I get people can be obnoxious with their phones but this seemed unecessary. We were seated in what has to be the worst seat in the house, literally squised into a corner. There was no room to move and had to angle to catch glimpse of the stage which was very uncomfortable. This made for a very long night. The comics were ok, 1 was very good, 2 were ok and 2 were just not good. This place is not what it used to be.
Be the first to ReplyI'm already planning my next visit
We decided that we fancied seeing some comedy impromptu. We didn't think we had much of a chance, but we headed over to Comedy Cellar an hour before kick-off. We were added to a wait-list and told to come back as the show started. Anyone who would think our chances were slim (including myself) would be wrong! So a word of advice; this actually works. The comedy itself was fantastic, it was a quality line-up with some semi famous names. You're required to drink 2 drinks each, which wasn't a problem, and the service was excellent. They confiscate your phones and watches on entry which is a nice touch too. To our surprise when we left, almost 2 hours had passed. I'm already planning my next visit.
Be the first to ReplyIs SCREAMING funny?
Food and drinks and service were nice. But the six comedians often thought that a lot of screaming added big time to the fun. WRONG!!!!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Comedy Show on a Thursday Night
Make sure to reserve tickets in advance. Best comedy show in new york. Well organized. Good price. Cool Rooms. Cell phones get put into a bag to create more appropriate setting. Drinks and food were also good.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent evening of continuous laughs
We had an excellent experience at the Comedy Cellar. The process, from booking tickets online, to putting phones in a secure case to carry in, to be shown to our seats, was seamless and quick. The service was great. But the real highlight, of course, was the comics. They were all outstanding! Each is different in style and technique but all equally hilarious. I would 100% recommend this as an evening out in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyComedy gold
We did the MacDougal site. Well organized and managed. Despite a small and crappy environment, the waiters do a great job serving you. We had some last minute lineup changes that were a bummer but understand that’s the nature of that business. We still had an amazing time.
Be the first to ReplyGood Times
The talent was excellent! A very diverse group of artists. The drinks were fine and I recommend the fries for a snack while laughing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Comedy Brunch
My son made reservations for 4 for brunch on New Years Day. They had four really good comedians and a comedic MC who was fantastic. The room is intimate, yet spacious. It cost $25 per person plus a 2 item minimum. Our server was great and efficient. They started on time and the food and drinks were good. We will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplySo Fun!
Intimate venue, we didn't mind, and comics were great. We had a surprise visit from TWO A-list headliners and that was fantastic! We were seated like 5 feet from them.
Be the first to ReplyWorst establishment I’ve ever experienced.
I’ve been doing stand up comedy for 5+ years. This. By far. Was the. Worst experience of all time. Tried to go there with my mother and we were so excited!! (Apparently— “too excited”) We made reservations and got there 30 minutes early. I was definitely hyped up to see 2 of my favorite comics in the line up. This show started at 11:30PM so we were just walking back from dinner. The bouncer came up to my 68 year old mother and I and wrote “manager” on our phone bags that we had put on silence and seal closed. We were also with 2 of my business partners who were behind us in line. We continued to talk to multiple guests around us about how cool the comedians were and how we drove 3+ hours to see them. As we proceeded to the front of the line they pulled us aside and said I was “too intoxicated” to attend and they couldn’t put the comics “at risk”. (Note: that with my experience in comedy I would absolutely never heckle or disrespect another comedian). This was a Tuesday night and we each had one glass of wine. I couldn’t believe it until they confirmed they were being serious and told us “maybe you can come back tomorrow night”. I will never go back or recommend this establishment. This was one of the worst experiences I’ve had within the comedy industry. I was not only embarrassed by coworkers but my mother as well. After the line went through, I attempted to reason with them again and they completely wrote me off. Hope they will do better in the future. I will never attempt to attend a show run by them again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for comedy
Saw the 10 pm Village Underground Show. Hilarious! All 5 comics and the host were very funny, each in their own way. Very small, intimate space. You’re right on the stage with the comics practically which is part of what makes it a special, only in NYC, kind of experience
Be the first to ReplyWe'll definitely go back!
Five acts, and all were great quality comics! Lots of hilarity! The emcee was great too! We were one table away from the stage so had a perfect view, but I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. We will definitely go back when we're in NYC again.
Be the first to ReplyTerr9ble management, rude. Otherwise, a nice place
I would like to say I used to go to The Comedy Cellar and the Olive Tree years ago and it was always a nice time. Last night, we went to get some wings at the Olive Tree restaurant upstairs. There is no restroom on the restaurant floor so we had to walk down where there the comedy show was going on to use the restroom. While I wanted for my gf, a lady, the manager Val came over and told me I was trying to sneak in to watch the show. I told her i was waiting for my girlfriend to come out of the restroom to go back upstairs. She went ahead and told me "SHE KNEW what I was trying to do!" With the comedian doing a good job on stage, I smiled and reitterated I had walked Milu down to the restroom and was just waiting for her to come out to go back up to oir restaurant table. She told me not to force her to to have to get security. Uuum? So i started to walk towards the door leading back up to the restaurant and walked back to our table. When Milu came up 2 minutes later, she was like "why was the lady being so rude.. and why did you leave me downstairs?" I've been to the comedy cellar more than the manager Val can imagine. I was there when Dave Chapelle, Marlon Waynes and Chris Rock were on stage till 5AM one night. So I understand this is a unique place. But....
Be the first to ReplyClassic Venue/show
Fantastic venue. VERY very small. Waiters and waitresses are literally climbing over people to serve drinks and food. The comedians were FANTASTIC. I highly recommend this place for comedy.
