Ordered take out and there was a staple in the dish I took home. Stop using staples when packaging take out orders! It could land people in the ER!!!

Wow I haven't been so excited and amazed about a restaurant in A WHILE!! Have always heard glowing reviews about congee village and it seems like a late night food place for a lot of Asians. We tried this for our second dinner and instantly regretted not coming here for our first. We also ordered some soup and dimsum (hargow shrimp dumplings) and shumai. The congee - 5.5/5! The duck in it was so heavenly and we actually asked to add an order of the roasted duck but they ran out, bummer. I personally haven't had clams in this style for so long, and this really satisfies the long time craving. The jumbo fried shrimp with salt and pepper was unexpectedly delightful, the shrimps are also really...jumbo. Then the fried rice! Each grain of rice was separated from each other, and in eggs. So so lovely. Hargow was actually above the average Cantonese cuisine places, the wrapper was super thin and the shrimps they used were of high quality. Service was pretty quick and all the food were brought out decently fast. Can't wait to go back!

Food was great especially for the price point but service was very meh. It took them about 30 minutes to get our food out, even though we just ordered 2 congees, 1 shu mai, and 1 bamboo fried rice. By the time the food arrived, the fried rice was pretty cold. My boyfriend and I love preserved egg congee, and the one we had here was pretty tasty. It's a pretty big portion size too even though it's only ~$7. The bamboo fried rice was yummy but it was the congee that I'd come back for.

Even though I had moved out of NYC Chinatown 50 years ago, I still like to eat in NYC Chinatown and it's surrounds, especially since I had worked in the Financial District for more than 35 years, I visited and eaten in many of the Chinese restaurants for ages, and Congee Village was one of my favorite ... until this past week. I walked into the waiting area and asked a table for two and was told I have to wait. I asked for how long, and the "manager" said he doesn't know, then said rudely 20 minutes but can't guarantee and he doesn't know so we sat down and wait. A party came in and said they had a reservation and was led to their table. A few couple came in and asked for tables of two and was immediately led to tables and sat them (these folks did not have reservations). I got up and ask about our table and the "manager" rudely responded, "I know you're there so I'll call you when there's a table". My husband and I look at each other and said, "Let's get out of here. Our money is good elsewhere" so we walked out. As much as Congee Village is one of our favs, we will not go back. I cannot believe how rude and impolite the "manager" was.DEFINITELY WON'T RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.

Took over 30 minutes to take our order, gave us the wrong food, took another 30 minutes to get the check. After paying the manager wouldn't let us leave without leaving a tip to his liking.
Be the first to ReplyTotally fine.
Not great. Not terrible. For a $280 bill, they pretended that I could only tip in cash (only to later bring me the check to sign which clearly allowed me to tip in cash). So, ok.

Great place if you want to have an asian family style meal, specifically for a large group of people. Food overall was really delicious and price is reasonable. Highly recommend the short rib with white rice on the side, the razor clam, and the stir fried veggie.
Be the first to ReplyWent on a Saturday at 6 pm with 3 other friends.
We got a number for the waiting list and the hostess said it will be an hour's wait, which we were fine with. However, it ended up being almost 2 HOURS before getting seated... I understand that it is a Saturday and it's prime time service for them, but not only did we wait 2x the estimated time, but the hostess messed up the number on her notepad and gave our table to another group of 4, who came after us! I expressed my annoyance to her but she didn't seem to care. The only way we could have gotten seated at that point was to share a table with another party of 3-4 which we agreed to because we were already starving. The service was not good. If you want a refill on your water, you had to call the waiters every time. The only good thing about the restaurant is that the food came out fairly quickly. We ordered the Honey Walnut Jumbo Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Pork, Off menu item *Fried Fish with Tofu, Mushrooms, and Cabbage*, and the Sauteed Lobster with Sticky Rice. I would say our favorite was the Sauteed Lobster With Sticky Rice, but despite the hunger, the food was nothing special. Most of my friends were tired and exhausted from waiting so long to the point we just wanted to eat and get out of the restaurant. I would not recommend coming here on a weekend during prime time for some overrated food that you can probably get better elsewhere.

I've been here before, but decided to try it out again with a group of friends. As expected, the congee was delicious. I got the classic pork and preserved egg congee, which was thick and well seasoned. We also got some other dishes as well, all of which were delicious. The place got busy really fast when we arrived for lunch on Sunday afternoon, so be prepared to start early on weekends or to wait.
Be the first to ReplyCongee was super yummy.
Went for a friends birthday party. They hosted to large tables each with about 10 people. Very nice.
Be the first to ReplyMy 7 coworkers and I came here to celebrate CNY.
One of my coworker have been here before so we let him do the offering. We go:- sautéed snails - beef chow fun - salted fish and chicken fried rice - seated snow peas - pan fried bean curd - baked salted chicken- pan fried whole flounder Whenever sharing plates I'm always apprehensive that it won't be enough food. But I was pleasantly surprised and ended up full. All of the food was really good. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful. Everything had great flavor. My favorite dish was the beef chow fun - so tasty. I also had a lychee martini which was good. This place is huge. The staff is nice and the food is reasonable priced. I'd love to come back and try more off the menu, in particular the congee.
Be the first to ReplyIts a hugeeeee place.
We were a party of 9 people and luckily found reservations there. The food was pretty good but the service was not satisfactory. First, they didn't come to get our orders. We had to hunt down someone who can come to our table, three floors below the ground level to take our order. Waited almost an hour before the food even showed up. And when it did, showed up without rice. Not everyone knows that we need to order rice separately! The waiter should have made us aware of that. And once the rice was brought, we realized The rice was not the sticky rice so impossible to use the chopsticks as a beginner chopsticks user. Since we were a large group, we ordered a lot of food so lost track of what we ordered. But when we were finally ready for check with all our table cleared of old dishes and plates, after two hours, they brought one of the entrees that was pending that apparently they forgot to bring early on. And before we could say anything, the server took it back. We didn't bother to cancel it from the check because it was too much of a hassle. But definitely the management needs to be more aware of situation like this.
Be the first to ReplyThe food tasted great.
But the portions weren't as much as I would have wanted. The congee is top tier though. I'd go just for the congee.
Be the first to ReplyVisited congee village for the first time in-person today.
I was very impressed with the restaurants decor and more impressed with their congee. The congee came in a stone pot and was served very hot (which is key to eating good congee!!). The pork and preserved egg congee was so good we ended up ordering 2 of them. Definitely also get the fried dough if you're eating congee. The pan fried bean curd was delicious and cooked really well. This isn't a very easy dish to cook and congee village did it really well. The xiaolongbao's skin was pretty thick in my opinion and didn't have as much soup inside so this dish was probably a 2-3/5 for me but otherwise everything else was great!
Be the first to ReplyI've been here a few times.
The food here is a bit more pricey than some of the other Chinese spots but they kind of need said prices as it's technically in the LES and the place is massive. The menu here is huge and overall the food is good. In general, the congee are good but I prefer going to other places such as Wong's for the cheap stuff. We had a blue crab one which was good and I believe I ordered another one which had dried scallop and white nut what was also fine. There was a casserole with I believe either Chinese yam or taro and pork which was very tasty but I would not recommend the spare ribs with black bean sauce on a sizzling plate as it was very bony and there really wasn't much meat and the meat that was there was a bit chewy. The fried rice and noodles are perfectly fine also. The Peking Pork Chop/Pork Chop Peking Style is also tasty though I would say the sauce was a tad too sweet for my liking but the portion size was adequate for the price and we all enjoyed it overall. 3.5 overall. If this place was closer to Chinatown, I would probably give it a three as there is just better places for the price but for the area, I'll bump it up.

Although the restaurant itself is cool -- the food was under seasoned and subpar. Waitstaff forgot several parts of our order, and nearly charged us extra for items we never received or ordered.

Congee's the best food to have when you're sick and it doesn't get any tastier than this place. I got the plain and the vegetarian versions when I was under the weather. Not heavy, but kept me satiated!

Be the first to ReplyI booked the 20 person dining room for my birthday and it
I booked the 20 person dining room for my birthday and it was a smashing success. Congee Village was the only place in Manhattan where I could book a big enough room without spending a million dollars. Additionally, the big dining rooms have KARAOKE which made this THE perfect place to have a party. The room was on the cozy side for 20 -- barely enough room for two 10 person tables -- but it worked. The whole restaurant was lavishly decorated with lanterns, tiles, fish tanks, etc. Even our room door had traditional Chinese locking wood doors. Our reservation was at 8 and the room was ready about 15 minutes later. I called our food order in earlier so we didn't have to deal with 20 menus and orders at the restaurant. The food was incredible! Very homestyle and tasted just like my favorite Chinese restaurant back home. Some highlights included the pork & preserved egg congee, squid with salt and pepper, and black fungus with vinegar. The black fungus was seasoned perfectly and the fried squid came in in huge, tender pieces. Cocktails are $10. All other drinks were less. Pro tip for groups: order cocktails in pitchers. The Lychee Martini was really popular. We had to ask a couple times for more water and to start the karaoke machines before they actually got around to it, but for a group as large and rowdy as ours, I think the small oversights can be forgiven. Again, this was a really affordable restaurant for our group of 20 student budgets. We ordered several rounds of drinks and enough food to have plenty left over and the cost came to just over $1000 pre-tip (there's a $650 min spend to reserve the room). Definitely coming back on a more low key night, and highly recommend for large groups! You won't find a better deal in Manhattan.

One of the Chinese Restaurants that I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat. Staff were nice and polite. Quite prompt as well. Food is quite delicious. Like their carbs very much. Pumpkin fried rice is awesome. Above average Chinese restaurant overall. Would totally recommend!***My advice is to bring vaccines card because it is required for every restaurant in NY.

I stumbled on this restaurant purely out of luck; I had a lot of friends recommend it for Canto food after the fact. I ordered the Egg Drop Soup and Eggplant with Gaelic Sauce. The soup was a little more earthy and less tangy than the way I prefer it, but the eggplant was seriously amazing. Would definitely come here again.

The portion sizes of the congee were huge for the price! Definitely shareable if you're planning on getting other things. The Chinese broccoli also had a ton of flavor, love getting this whenever I get congee as my vegetable options. Pretty fast service as well.Knocked it down a star because they asked for us to tip them in cash at the end which I thought was unprofessional but I guess being an Asian establishment, I am not surprised.
