Good food, lacking ambience and it was a very rushed service. ..........................................................
We were looking for a proper French Restaurant in DC. I will say that the service was very friendly, and the food was better than I expected due to the facility itself. It missed the mark on ambience for us as we enjoy the "French" dining experience. It was a quick in and out dinner, but the food was pretty spot on. We wont return due to the lack of ambience, but it sufficed
Be the first to ReplyA delightful evening. And the food was great as well
For dinner with friends from the summer in Vermont. The "moulees frites was a popular dish, and of course t he octopus was a winner, despite the fact that all of us had seen the movie, My Octopus Teacher. I would return.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, bad service charge
Convivial is a French-style cafe with a large brunch menu. It's a spacious, light-filled space that is inviting and homey. Good coffee and pancakes with apples and mascarpone. It has decided to adopt the DC trend of adding a mandatory 20% service charge to the checks. This is a junk fee - either let me tip what I want or add the service charge to the menu prices - and the service wasn't even that good; they did not keep my coffee cup full. So they get the 2-star deduction that I give to all restaurants applying this charge.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect Christmas meal
We had an absolutely perfect meal here. My mom was visiting for Christmas. The service was amazing - above and beyond! I wish I got our waiters name but he had longer hair combed back. The food was some of the best I’ve had. Especially recommend the French onion soup!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food. Service Needs Some Improvement
We ate brunch here the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I wanted to support the restaurant after reading the interview of the owner after the recent crime incident nearby. Our food was excellent. Three ordered to Eggs Benedict and one ordered a Quiche. Fries were perfectly cooked and the salad perfectly dressed. My only complaints are with the service. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food arrived just two minutes after the drinks were served, not allowing us to enjoy them first. May biggest complaint was that a 20% gratuity was added and we were not notified by the waiter or was it highlighted on the bill. It may have been listed on the menu, but none of us noticed it. I don't have a problem with the amount, of course, but definitely don't like it when not notified. We almost tipped an additional 20%, which I am quite sure happens frequently with groups who don't pay attention. I doubt the restaurant would notify diners about double tipping, but hopefully they would have the professionalism to do so.
Be the first to ReplyDelivered perfect French cuisine, but service needs more attention
We sat outside on the patio to celebrate our anniversary. The food was absolutely perfect, the way you’d enjoy it in France. We chose dishes that were classic French: leeks, escargots, moules, and boeuf Bourguignon. The kitchen delivered superbly. The moules were a feast. The service, though, was very uneven. The grumpy hostess was curt and unwelcoming in a very French way. This might not appeal to those unfamiliar with Parisian bistros. Our server was stretched (our wine by the glass arrived before our kir royales), but he knew well the menu and the wines and made good suggestions.

Delicious! We came for restaurant week and the food was delicious, portions were fair, and service was great. We had the escargot, mussels, steak frites, branzino and some great desserts as well! Will be back
Be the first to ReplySimply very good.
A very good waiter with very good recommendations. From the starters to the desert very high-quality food, deliciously prepared. Excellent service. The dinner was worth every dollar we paid.
Be the first to ReplyNice meal at the bar
I was in town solo for business and had heard great things about this restaurant. Without a reservation on a Saturday night (and dining solo), I arrived early to get a seat at the bar. At around 6 p.m. there were plenty of bar spots available, but when I left an hour and a half later, it was full. The service at the bar was attentive and (as I find often when I'm dining solo) fast. I barely had time to enjoy my glass of wine and book before the food arrived. This is not a complaint, and I was not rushed out by the staff. Just an observation. Had the tuna carpaccio and moules frite. Both excellent. Tasty rose to go along.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal but not a perfect experience
This is a high end restaurant. Overall we enjoyed our dinning experience. I had the Bouillabaisse which was very flavorful and generous. The texture of the accompanying croutons was excellent and the rouille sauce was a good complement to the dish. However the only shrimp (very large) in the meal was way overcooked which resulted in an unpleasant chewy texture (it was even hard to cut). Inexcusable for a high end restaurant. My wife had the boeuf Bourguignon which she enjoyed. However we were disappointed with the service. We found that our server was trying too much and as a result did not come across as being sincere. Also he was never to be seen when we wanted him, probably because he was serving two different areas of the restaurant. Our experience with the other staff was much more positive.
Be the first to ReplySuperb breakfast!
Excellent all around! My husband and I went for breakfast this weekend and the service, food and atmosphere were all exceptional. We had the crepe and French toast and both were to die for! Our sever was very professional, friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!

Definitely recommend. The food and the wine are outstanding! Looking forward to returning. The atmosphere is nice too
Be the first to ReplyGood Food but Atmosphere Much Better in Front Room
The food and service were good. But, like a couple of other reviews, we were confused as to why the restaurant was so empty. It is because there are 2 rooms. The front room is bustling and has great energy, and the back room is very quiet with many empty tables. We couldn't figure out why were seated in the back when we were there early. Definitely request the main room on the front vs the one by the outdoor tables in the back.
Be the first to ReplyWhy do you need two hostesses when your restaurant is empty?
The meal was fantastic. The service was amazing. However the hostess was incredibly rude. She refused to seat us at a window, claiming that the restaurant was fully booked, and wanting to seat in a corner next to a wall. I counted 30 tables in the restaurant. When we arrived, one was occupied. When we left, less than half were occupied. The waiter, who was incredibly gracious, moved us to the window. When we left, the hostess doubled down and argued that we don’t know how restaurants work, and should not have had that table.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent French restaurant!
We came in for dinner with the family. Everything was excellent! The food, the service, the venue. We will definitely be back

Very nice restaurant - with a reasonable range of meat, fish, and vegetables. Service is attentive and the dining room is comfortable. The leek appetizer is particularly delicious, as I've ordered it both times I've been. The shrimp and asparagus appetizer is also excellent. Less enthusiastic about the fois gras. Other highlights - the steak frites (both full size NY Strip and the bavette cut), the pork chop, and the boullabaisse. Hamburger was overcooked and disappointing. I did see a cute little rat scurrying around the patio when leaving - but that's unavoidable in the city. Just a reminder of the downside of eating al fresco.

We were here for Saturday Lunch. The brunch/lunch menu was excellent. I lived the French Onion Soup. Fast and Friendly Service. Definitely come here if you are looking for French food
Be the first to ReplyConvivial: Great Choice for a Sunday Brunch
Arrived with a reservation in early January at 11:30 and after our meal it got much busier with many on the patio dining. Got free street parking around the block. Chose: Cedric's french toast, which was heavenly and generous slices of toast in a luscious pool of orange custard ( a perfect change from syrup). My husband opted for the Monsieur Coquet with fries and considered it a treat. On leaving, he said, "Let's come back for dinner."

Everything about this restaurant was comfortable; pleasant surroundings, nice menu choices, great service. Not on the list of our favorite restaurants, but one we would visit again.
Be the first to Replyfine food, interesting modern menu
We did take-out which was very well packed. The seafood dishes are terrific and the chicken entrees beautifully spiced. This place has classic French dishes and also modern takes of veggies and meats, a wonderful menu. Although we usually don't have desserts, too stuffed by then, the selection and quality here are not to be missed.
Be the first to ReplyConsistent, Reliable, Quality
Really great night with a solid menu, solid bar and great service. Loved our meal but unlike a lot of places the dessert menu also stood out. Quality bar, really nothing not to like about Convivial
Be the first to ReplyFriendly service, great food
I ate here on a chilly Spring evening with my wife and daughter. The food was excellent ad the service really made us feel welcome. All of the staff, though busy, were happy to chat and exchange stories and even Chef Cedric found the time to come out and make the heat lamps work with some special technique that only he has. The food was perfect for the evening; hearty cassoulet, roast chicken for mains with tasty tuna tartare and roasted cauliflower to start. The food was really well-prepared, tastes were fresh and everything came the we needed it. The atmosphere and the food make you think you've been invited into their neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyConvivial is the best French
Convivial is the best French restaurant in the DC area- the service is great, the food is delicious and the portions are generous. I particularly love the Cassoulet and Tarte Flambé.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent takeout for special occasion
The silver lining to the pandemic is that we can get takeout from wonderful restaurants that are too popular to get a reservation and/or too "lively" for a couple of boomers who like a quiet conversation.
I had read that Convival's menu was veg-friendly. They had me at vegetarian onion soup. Almost everywhere, it's made with beef or chicken stock. That and everything else was delicious - cocktails, soup, salads, fish, flan, and cheese. Clearly, attention was paid to preparation and packing to ensure the food would travel well and even survive gentle warming.
Great Find
We had reservations for brunch at a different place in DC, but they were cancelled because of a rain threat (we were scheduled for outdoor seating). I searched and found this spot and we were not disappointed. There are many good options and the mimosa carafe is an excellent value. I had the French toast and an omelette. Both were excellent. My wife had the pancakes. They were outstanding. My daughter had the pancakes and quiche. Everything was great. The staff was very attentive to our needs. This is a great place for brunch.
