Delicious food only surpassed by extraordinary service
Don't get me wrong, food is wonderful. 3 pasta dishes were superb; creative sauces and pastas that simply don't get any better. A Focaccia from a specific region in N. Italy, was a taste sensation. An Italian Chardonnay was beautifully balanced. Even so, the extraordinary service, exemplified by Alfredo, Mario & David, deserves special mention, a perfect combination of knowledge, friendliness and respect, such a hard trio to deliver, but delivered by all at Cotogna, so consider this a 5+ rating!

Great spot in Jackson Square area. Outdoor seating with heaters or indoors. Italian menu with very high quality food. Run by the same folks as Quince (Michelin 3 star). Server never brought my beer and despite saying she would bring parmesan never did.

We sampled several of the dishes and the meal was delicious. Spuntini: gnocco fritto with prosciutto, gorgonzola and pickled onion Antipasti: little gem salad with blue cheese, asian pear and walnut Pasta: sunchoke tortelli, agnolotti del pin, pappardelle Pizza: sopressata In addition to the great food, we loved the ambience. We were seated inside, but the outdoor seating also looked very cozy. Overall, I'd recommend for business dinners or date nights.

This is a highly regarded restaurant that we were both pleased about and disappointed in. The service was exceptional - A+ - with knowledgeable and helpful staff throughout. The outside sitting area is one of the nicest of all the covid era outside dining areas. Tables are comfortable, at a distance from each other, there are lovely plantings and a nice barrier. Another A+. The food was a disappointment however: among the four of us only one had a truly exceptional dish - the radiatori -pork ragu. The quail and sea bream were fine but didn't live up to our expectations, nor did the spaghetti. Apple tart with gelato was delicious. A word of caution: the inside space was full and very very loud! If you're looking for a quiet evening sit outside. So, a mixed bag.

We absolutely love Cotogna. YES, we believe one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. From food to wine to service it is outstanding . But it is very difficult to get reservations - especially when we live in Utah and fly in with a short term plan of arrival. Dining at Cotogna is an amazing experience. If possible plan ahead.

We found this place because it was close to the hotel we stayed at. We enjoyed our walk over. Look at the menu was a little intimidating because we couldnโt pronounce any of them! But our server was super nice and extremely helpful when we asked questions. We took his suggestion with the ravioli & corn platesโฆeverything was perfect! It was great experience to have lunch here for our 8 yr anniversary

It was good but not five star. I didnโt like the fact that our wine was kept away from table and were reliant on someone bringing the bottle to table. I also thought it was overpriced for what is essentially pasta dishes (more than twice what youโd pay in Italy). Food pretty tasty though and the restaurant ambience was excellent. Would I go back - at a push. I think other options for an Italian would have to be explored first.

I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant during our upcoming visit in March. I had admitted to unfortunately booking a reservation in February instead of March as an error and I had reached out to management regarding this explaining my situation with the intention of still going in March and they still charged me the US$100.00 with no alternative to utilizing the credit for future visit. Management was rigid, unaccommodating and inflexible. For a restaurant that prides themselves with โexcellent serviceโ this was not the case.

Amazing food and great service! We celebrated my birthday tonight and they had paper placemats wishing me a happy birthday! The Arancini and the pasta was unbelievably delicious! Definitely make a reservation and eat here! We sat outside and it was lovely:-)

I read good things about Cotogna while travel planning for SF so I booked a lunch reservation for my family. After visiting Chinatown that morning we walked to Cotogna to make our reservation. We were seated immediately and found the space very warm and friendly. We ordered the following: - Halibut Crudo - Excellent. A very well thought and perfectly executed dish that delicately balanced all the individual ingredients. Great way to start the meal. - Soppressata Pizza - Very good. Well made pizza. Dough was light and not too chewy. My kids enjoyed it. - Penne with pork sausage sugo alla 'Nonna Spencer' & ricotta fresca - Excellent. A rustic dish that was full of flavour. I wanted more. - Agnolotti del plin "2003" con sugo di arrosto - Very good. Very simple looking but really highlights the quality. Felt it could add a little cheese for umami, but still a great dish. Service was good. Took the time to describe the dish when served, which is always nice. No timing issues at all. Overall, a very good start to our trip to SF. I would definitely consider coming back. 4.5 out of 5.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience!!!
Probably one of the best food in SF!!! This is an amasing Itallian restaurant with delicious food and superb service. Even though the menu is not big the chef is very creative. And the service, both very friendly and very informative. Great experience, Highly recommend it!

What a great dining experience. Courteous and knowledgeable staff. An extensive wine list and a short but very interesting food menu. Both, starters and main course were cooked to perfection. This was a real treat - thank you Cotogna!
Be the first to ReplyAn unusual restaurant that hasnโt suffered in service or food quality during the pandemic
Excellent food, great service, wonderfully inventive menu, terrific sommelier- a great experience all around. The octopus and chick pea appetizer was unusually tender and in a light tasty dressing. The yellow beet salad was terrific. Do not order the 1/2 loaf of focaccia bread- itโs large but not enough. Might be the best bread I can remember having. Tuscan fried chicken was great. Cacio de Pepe was very good but the portion was extremely small. Cโmon- pasta cheese and pepper are cheap- give people a larger bowl. Gelato was terrific- some of the best Iโve had. The little chocolate โburritoโ was sublime- yum!! All in all- a delightful dining experience.

My family and I had a wonderful Saturday afternoon lunch here. Outstanding food, brilliant sommelier, and great service. Would give it the highest recommendation.
Be the first to ReplyBest Italian restaurant in SF
Cotogna is undoubtedly the best Italian restaurant in SF. Although I can not recommend the pasta section enough (try the Ravioli!!), every item on the menu is delicious. The staff is extremely friendly and you won't ever receive a 'no' for whatever request you might have. The restaurant manager is always on the floor, assuring a welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is ideally located within walking distance from FiDi and is set up with beautiful romantic lights in the evening (beautiful if you sit outside). Its very often fully booked but usually you get a chance via walk in! Can only recommend!

Very bad experience! Poor assistance from the manager! I have booked a chef table andโฆ..it was OUTSIDE!
They charged me twice for the deposit.
Worst experience in my life!
IF YOU COME TO SAN FRANCISCO- YOU MUST EAT AT COTOGNA!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco.
The food is absolutely divine! Everything on the menu is delicious. The drinks and wine list are wonderful. The atmosphere is lovely.
The service is impeccable!
Thank you to Samantha Holley for taking care of our reservation. It was such a pleasure to meet you!
We will surely be back next time we are in San Francisco.
Make sure to get a reservation as soon as you can. it is one of the most popular restaurants in San Francisco.
Wonderful time
Had a wonderful time, as usual. This is one Uc my favorite spots in SF! Food was great especially the sunchoke pasta, and the chocolate gelato was extraordinary! Love this place!
Be the first to ReplyGood lunch
Had a chance to get here for lunch. Arrived on time for our reservation but staff was still going through their drills. Walked into the restaurant to check in. Heard the manager telling the staff to push for more wines by the glass. Totally understand everybody needs to make money, but when customers are standing within earshot, maybe tone it down a little?
Service was good, food was quite good. And wines by the glass was also quite ample :). I requested something to be done for my wife's birthday and they had personalized placemats! And they were also very gracious with her deserts.
Try that mixed grill !
Fried zucchini, salad w/lettuceand my new fave bean...Romano, generous portion of grilled items (belly, loin?, quail and sausage-i think it could have fed 3 easily, brothy white beans- tender and yummy... we also had a second dessert-polenta torte-SO tasty.
Service was super!
I can't wait to go again :)
Poor Service
The food is indisputably good - delicious, nice portions, focaccia is great.
But maybe get it as takeout instead because the service is a big disappointment. When we made our reservation we selected an outdoor table, so it was unsurprising to be told we would need to eat outdoors. No problem there.
However when the wind caused debris from the trees to rain down onto our plates and into our drinks our request to move under the restaurant shed - which had 3 empty spaces - was denied because they were "fully committed".
It was so frustrating to eat our meal while those spaces remained unoccupied the entire time. Moreover when we went to use the restroom the main dining room was empty too.
There are many great restaurants to try in San Francisco, and this food is good, but the indifferent and unfriendly service means this is not one of them.
Completely disappointed
So disappointed in this wonderful opportunity. Our service was completely lackluster with no server taking our order for almost 20 minutes. We then never saw that server after ordering. To get more drinks or ask for a dessert menu, we had to grab someone walking by. It was 30 additional minutes before we ate anything and 20 more between the two antipasti. Wh6rn they came out, they were really nothing special that I couldn't make at home myself (pics attached). 1.5 hours into service we had to ask for our main dishes to come out. When they came out, the corn triangulotti were amazing, but the pasta for the caccio pepe penne was crunchy and when you bit into it, you saw the white dry pasta ring. Management then condescendingly let me know that al dente pasta wasn't for everyone. This was raw and that was inappropriate for management to say at a restaurant of this caliber. They took it off our check, but the damage was done.

This place blew me out of the water. The food, the ambiance, the staff and in the middle of a pandemic no less. Steak option was the most decadent experience Iโve had in a long time. The side dishes that came with it were equally impressive, especially the beet salad (oh my word). I hope they keep their outdoor option for years to come - simply awesome!
