A gem near Wall Street
Excellent food and outstanding service in well laid-out dining room with high ceilings. Menu is offered in Tapas sharing style and had great variety. We had amazing rich Gruyère fritters, followed by fresh Hamachi crudo, seared octopus and finished with a whole park chop katsu style. We fished in the cheaper end of an extensive wine list and had a as very acceptable Portuguese red. The server was really knowledgeable about the menu and took the time to chat.

Very poor service - sommelier visited the table once, never seen again. Food was not brought out in the proper order, and our server hardly visited the table. Food was mixed; a couple of dishes were excellent, but most were average to poor. A follow up email to the restaurant asking a question went unanswered. In NYC, there are many, many better options.

We dined at the restaurant for our anniversary and we found that the restaurant had a great atmosphere, friendly professional service. Dante our waiter was very helpful and attentive. The starters were very good well cooked, we liked the Cauliflower, Parmigiano, Sherry which was creative. the cheese actually complemented the cauliflower and had a nice taste. the Romaine, Green Goddess, Breadcrumbs was a nice light option. We also liked the Hamachi Crudo, Persimmon, Tomato Dashi which was an interesting surprise, and refreshingly different. The dish worked well. What a complete disappointment were the main courses. Octopus, Sweet Potato, Laksa Sauce - The Octopus was burned and I returned the dish. The Dorade, Cauliflower, Chimichurri was a complete was not well cooked and tasted bitter. The saving course were the desserts, which were a delight to eat. Perhaps Crown shy should be a dessert only restaurant since their sweets were certainly very good. Overall the meal was over priced for what was being offered, but we did enjoy the service and atmosphere , Disappointing mains, and good desserts courses for both my wife and I, desserts were

Food very good but when we got the bill 3 of 5 items were priced higher than listed on the menu So they were put into the computer for a higher rate than on the menu. My guess is most guests do not notice they are charged more. So despite the good food we would not go back I have never experienced that before BUYER BEWARE!!!

I was in town to visit my Daughters who live in Manhattan. I decided to host a private dinner party for them and their friends. We had a total of 12 people in a private room with designated staff. Gabrielle was our room host with another server. We had incredible cocktails and wine throughout the entire evening. The food was amazing- starting with appetizers to entrees and finishing with dessert. Every single person that attended told me how special the entire night was and the food fantastic. Our staff was SO GREAT and everything was 100% luxury from start to finish.

Great atmosphere, great service and great food. Couldn't fault it! We shared the Gruyere fritters and then had the Pork Katsu and the Branzino. Portion sizes were good and the food tasted delicious.

It was well worth the trek to Pine Street (off Wall Street) to find Crown Shy. Friendly, informative staff and great, imaginative dishes. The recommended wine was superb. My only criticism is that the staff were almost too efficient, with different individuals topping up glasses etc rather than leaving it to our designated waiter who was great. Thank you Paco.

Be the first to ReplySuperb meal in FiDi
A great meal out from beginning to end. We were caught in traffic and needed to push back our reservation on a full Saturday night and they graciously accommodated us and held our table. We also never felt rushed the entire evening. The food was outstanding. Each plate had distinct flavors and was innovatively prepared, from the carrots to octopus to the half chicken. Portions were generous and easy to share, which was great because the prices (like all restaurants these days it seems) were steep. Desert was a crazy delicious toffee pudding with the sweet caramel flavors framed by a scoop of apple sorbet. Service was attentive, informed, and friendly without being cloying. The downsides -- the hip hop soundtrack was tiresome, loud, and not needed for this space to telegraph its popping vibe. Also, the wine list was seriously top heavy with only a few bottles in the $60 range. Wine selections by the glass were well curated (but no bargains). In the past few months we've eaten at Daniel and Dhamaka and Crown Shy's food (and overall dining experience) beats them both.

After reading mixed reviews I wasn’t sure what to expect but we had such an amazing experience I had to write a review. Every single member of staff was welcoming and helpful and the food was fantastic! I couldn’t fault it!

I found this place as I do many places on Google Maps. From the pictures and menu, it seems like a good place to try however on my first visit, there were no tables even at 10p and so I made a reservation. The bar area seems like a fine place to sit but it’s always busy there. I succumbed to table seating thru my reservation. The space is quite grand because of the Art Deco and high ceilings. However, the furniture do not match the building as they are quite generic that when looking at the tables and chairs, I felt like I was in Chinatown or some hole in the wall place. But looking up at the ceiling and lights, it’s quite grand. The service is adequate and my server took my order promptly. However, later in the evening, he was nowhere to be found and the dessert took an eternity to arrive. I had their octopus which was ok. I like full tentacles so was pleased that’s what they served. They were medium sized which is better than the tiny ones though I prefer the really big tentacles. The garnish did not really work for me. It’s different and flavors all over the map but I did not think it was tasty. This was probably the best dish, though. I also had their duck pasta which is another appetizer. It was really salty and the flavors were odd, some even bitter, It tasted awful, For the main course, I tried their famous chicken. It was somewhat tasty but after a few bites, I felt the spice. It was too spicy for me. It also didn’t taste like chicken. They seasoned it so much it tasted like Peking duck. It was not a bad dish, but I had better chicken that was cooked perfectly it would be so tender and I can taste the fresh chicken taste. Not the case here. I ended the evening with their orange ice cream which would have be great if it was made with real oranges. They added marshmallows and sugar wafers which made it too sweet for me. In all, a very expensive evening for very average tasting food. If average for you is McDonald’s or Applebees, sure this is great but my bar is a bit higher.
Be the first to ReplyTurn the Music Down! I had to shout all Evening!
Whilst the food was good, the customer service was not. At greeting, the QR code menu was not explained to us. The waiter who took our order was fine, the way the food was subsequently delivered was not. It was distant and in no way engaging. A few seconds to explain what was being served would have been useful and would have improved the engagement factor. The key element that ruined the evening was the background noise level. The soundtrack was so loud – drum and base – that it made enjoying the company of your dinner guests impossible. Diners were competing to be heard and this for us resulted in what was a cacophony beyond our comfort levels and made for an unpleasant evening. The restaurant and bar areas were full and the patrons were making plenty of noise to create the vibe that I am sure the restaurant is looking for. A very poor dining experience that would have been so much better if only someone had turned the soundtrack down.

Great food, great staff, quiet ambiance. Our meal was delicious: the tiradito, the octopus and the cauliflower appetizers were to die for; The chicken entree was superb. The tequila crown. Amazing experience for an outstanding date night.
Be the first to ReplyFood good not great…service BAD
I frequent many restaurants in NYC and was told to try Crown Shy. The overall design esthetic of the restaurant is nice. Food was mediocre compared to One White Street or Gramercy Tavern two amazing experiences I highly recommend. The worst part of the entire experience is the staff they are pompous not engaging and make you feel like they hate their job and don’t want to be working. They appear more concerned on hanging out and chit chatting amongst themselves than servicing the customers
Too bad it was less than I expected Don’t waste time going downtown for this one.
Very Good
This lower Manhattan Michelin starred restaurant is a find. Citrus Chicken is a house specialty (though I could have lived without the foot), romaine and chicory salads were fine, as was the dorade. Service was helpful and pleasant. The room is original deco.
Be the first to ReplyA trendy Michelin star experience
Don't expect your regular Michelin star experience here. It sharing plates or very delicious food, amazing cocktails and a great wine selection. The fritters are delicious, the bread was very different but a joy to eat. The duck Ragu and short rib were rich and packed with flavour. It has a buzzy atmosphere so if you are looking for quiet and romantic this isn't the venue but for something tasty and different I'd recommend it. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyMaitre’d l/Hostess needs to be fired
Food and table service were great. The maitre’d/hostess was rude and lied to our face. Any Michelin-starred restaurant should know better. She sat us at a table in a breezeway by the waiter station. When we asked about it she told us there was nothing else. I finally spoke to a manager and he apologized and sat us a table inside the restaurant. She told us there were no other tables but there 3-5 open. When you spend $600 on dinner for 3 at a Michelin-starred restaurant you expect better treatment from the front of the house. FAIL

Nicely designed bar and dining spaces. Be prepared for loud music and a fairly brisk pace. The food was very tasty - though at times the novelty of the preparation seemed to overwhelm the flavors somehow. The dishes were well described by our waiter and the sommelier was helpful with the very nice wine list. We had a great saturday night dinner and enjoyed trying this place.
Be the first to ReplyDISAPPOINTING AND EXPENSIVE
DISAPPOINTING AND EXPENSIVE. $425 for 3 of us including 5 drinks. Greuyere fritters were fine. So was bbq rib. Other things not so great. Desserts were very good. Service was pleasant. Room quite plain. We live on the upper east side so it cost $40 each way in an Uber. So call it $500. ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH THAT.

Really great food and cocktails. The short rib is AMAZING. Honestly every dish we got was amazing. We had the subchokes, squash, chicken, duck Ragu, octopus and short ribs and it was enough for 4 people.

My sister and I enjoyed our meal at Crown Shy very much! Our server, Adam D., set the tone with his warmth, professionalism, knowledge of the food preparation and wines, and attention throughout the meal!
I ordered the Gruyere Fritters w/Chile,Lime; Cauliflower, Parmigiano Sherry; Tuna Crudo,Plum, Chili; Octopus a la Plancha, Chorizo, Summer Squash; and lastly the Satsuma Orange Ice Cream, Honey, Toasted Marshmallow. Adam suggested the Pinot Noir, Presqu'ile, Santa Barbara, CA 2019 which was delicious and complimentary to the meal I chose.
All of the dishes were exceptionally prepared.
