Not crazy about the selection, food was adequate
I don't remember seeing an a la carte menu; we only had the choice of a 2 course or 3 course meal, or seafood platters. That made it difficult, as we had young children and were worried about picky eaters; if we would over or under order food; and ordering more food meant a significant increase in the overall price. In the end, we ordered two of the 3 course meals, and that was sufficient between our family of four. I shared with my 7-year-old. The leek and onion tarte tasted bland, and we felt it improved with the addition of salt. We did enjoy the braised beef cheeks and sticky toffee pudding. Between my husband and 10-year-old, they did NOT finish the haddock or cheese plate for desserts; I don't think they were impressed. So I would say the food is hit or miss, and that will affect your opinion. Service may be considered slow, but I think that is a consequence of a busy restaurant in a popular tourist area. I will say during our meal, there was an unruly customer who verbally abused the staff and caused a scene. I think the staff did a good job handling the situation. They did not escalate his agitated state and remained calm. I'm sorry the staff had to go through it.

I watched the restaurant being renovated and was excited to try this. The food is ok and the fish well cooked but would have been fine with some lemon and nog so many additions. Menu confusing: two and three course prices but hard to workout what individual dishes cost if you donโt want those options. A sign at the bar saying prices had gone up seemed irrelevant in a restaurant that was almost entirely tourists. Front of house team - please smile.
Be the first to ReplyBUSY PLACE, HARD WORKING WAITING STAFF
We were slightly nervous that they don't take reservations but got there at 1230 for lunch and got table without too much difficulty. But the place quickly filled up. My wife had the mussels, which were excellent; I had the venison burger, full of flavour, one of the best I've had; but (as one other critic says here) the skin-on chips are not great and shouldn't be allowed in any kitchen. Extremely popular with Chinese tourists, it seems, all of whom received the same efficient and effective service the waiting staff gave us (so I'm surprised by the suggestion of discrimination in one of the reviews here). All in all a very pleasant dining experience which I would recommend.

This restaurant is an exceptionally excellent dining establishment. We've frequented it on numerous occasions over the years, including two visits in July 2023 during our stay in city. The seafood is truly exceptional, possibly the finest around. The service and atmosphere are equally delightful: Danny and Fabio provide top-notch care, although the entire staff is friendly and service-oriented. Our dinners there have always been outstanding, with our most recent choices being halibut and blackened swordfish. Everything is consistently superb! The restaurant also boasts an impressive wine selection. We enthusiastically endorse this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, mediocre service
Had lunch here, we had the seafood platter that was loaded with fresh mussels, scallops, and salmon. A squeeze of lemon was all that was needed! Most excellent, even though they did not have any langoustines that day. Drinks were mediocre and service was absolutely terrible. Probably the worse service Iโve experienced in Scotland during my trip. Will give some grace as it was lunch time and Portree is a small quaint town with tons of tourists.
Be the first to ReplySeafood platter lunch
Portree has limited restaurants open in the wintertime. Really slim pickings for food at this island. The menu had a handful of selection. I had the seafood platter (as pictured for $38) with loads of mussels, a portion of salmon, and 4 delicious sweet scallops with side of boiled potatoes. The steamed mussels were fresh but bland (least they could do is boil it in some kind of broth). The scallops were the best! The venison stew was ok. Its a bit pricey but we were in and out in an hour.... and most restaurants pretty much serve the same thing. Yes I agree with other reviewers, the (short, young, long dark hair) waitress was curt, snippy (and stressed out) not friendly & definitely not a happy camper. Overheard guests table over that the waitress made them feel uncomfortable. Management should address this issue (not trying to get her fired but learn some courtesy to customers).
Be the first to ReplySolid quick lunch
Fell into this place in Portree when looking for a quick lunch. The menu was fairly limited but varied enough to suit the varying palates of a family of 4. Fish and chips was generously sized, fish super fresh and chips cut from actual potatoes. Scallops well cooked and accompanying cauliflower puree and caper smush very tasty. Mussels and chips was good mussels and chips. The pasta with tomato and basil ragu sounded mundane but was actually unusually good. Service quick and efficient. Would go again.
Be the first to ReplyNot sure if it was worth the wait
There was limited choice in Portree so we dined here. No booking system so we had to wait about 30 minutes in a entrance porch. There were 4 choices for mains and no vegetarian option which Iโm not sure why this wasnโt offered. I selected fish and chips but it came with a side salad. Fish and chips can only be served with peas surely. My husband had the mussels, again no chips or crusty bread, chips purchased separately. And the chips were the type with skin on. It was ok, service pleasant and quick.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place to eat.
This is worth stopping in for a bite. Warning, however - they do not take reservations so be sure to get there when they open for dinner at 5:30.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Food
One of the best meals of our entire trip. From the wine to the meal and dessert, we had nothing but a great experience and great food
Be the first to ReplyLovely food....feel sorry for the staff though!
Not very many options in Portree and many places are booked out so we took the chance and joined the queue for Cuchillin. No one greeted us or any of the other people in the queue, even to say hello or set expectations for the potential wait. For us, this was over 45 minutes on a very rainy day! Once inside, it was clear why. Only three young girls running around like headless chickens in a very busy restaurant. The food was delicious and the girls serving us were really lovely and clearly doing their best. Whoever owns that restaurant might be served well in helping their staff.
Be the first to ReplyHonest Review
Bit of a let down being honest, only 3 options for a starter, 4 options for a main. The starters were fish, fish and a soup. Mains were shellfish, fish platter, steak and you've guessed it....fish! Nothing for a vegetarian in 2022! So, needless to say I plumped for the fish! You weren't expecting that hu! Fish was fresh, chips were good but the food was bland. Batter was supposed to be beer batter, there was no acidity, yeast or malt flavour from the supposed beer. Head waiter smelled of sweat, young lassie referred to customers as "yous", lacking basic etiquette. Obvious why, they are on minimum wage and don't care how they come across. They open at 5:30, for the first 30 mins half the restaurant was empty. This was presumably due to the kitchen not being able to handle more than 6 tables ordering simultaneously. For a restaurant of this supposed caliber it's a real let down. Poor customers are forced to queue outside in the rain as they do not take bookings in the year 2022!
Be the first to Replymmm... can improve!
Food can improve. Busy place. Seemed understaffed. Sticky toffee pudding was good. Location is really good.
Be the first to ReplyNice grub but long queue in the cold
So no bookings taken at this restaurant like lots of other restaurants on Skye so we stood outside, it was a chilly ish night. After waiting 25 minutes we were seated but they kept the door open all the time (perhaps because of Covid I donโt know) so we never warmed up which spoiled the meal a bit, so much so it was a bit uncomfortable. Shame as the waitress was lovely, friendly and knowledgable, and the food was very good. If only theyโd shut the door!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals of our trip........
Great place! All agree one of the best meals of our trip....might be colored by the fact we had spent all day hiking and were all ravenous. They don't seem to take reservations and we had to wait about 30 min for a table but it was worth it. The restaurant was nice inside with a relaxed atmosphere. We had the seafood platter for two, steak, and salmon, everything was delicious and portions ample. Would highly recommend a visit here should you be in Portree.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant moules and beef
Fantastic food after a long day of walking. Fresh and tasty with really lovely ingredients. Busy enough so we got a late table, make sure you book.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a great place
We were looking for someplace for dinner and saw people living up outside this place. The food was the best we had during our stay in the Highlands. Service was fantasic. I highly recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyTourist trap, tiny portions, made me sick
Tourist trap more focused on taking your money than feeding you. Ordered the scallops from the lunch options, the price was reasonable. Plate came with only two scallops and about two tablespoons of the mashed cauliflower side. Instead of providing a meal, they doubled the volume by adding in the โcoralโ part of the scallops which is typically discarded (try it and youโll know why). Would have been small for a starter, totally unacceptable for a meal. I was throwing up within hours, no less! Same story with the Smoked Salmon Salad lunch; we all laughed at the scant plate when it arrived. Even the pasta with tomato sauce was tiny. Horrid experience, food made us sick/gassy, and over-priced.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place, well worth a visit
This is a great little place. From what I understand they do not take bookings for tables and you need to queue outside and wait to be seated - its worth it. We came to the restaurant for dinner and there were not many staff working but you get served very quickly (faster than many other places with more staff) and they were really friendly. The restaurant was nice inside with a great relaxed atmosphere. We had the Cullin Skink soup which was brilliant followed by Salmon and beer battered haddock, both were delicious. The dishes being brought to the other tables looked amazing and whilst the menu isn't huge, it doesn't need to be when the food on it is so good. Would highly recommend a visit here should you be in Portree.
Be the first to ReplyWalk ins only but very much worth it
Fantastic seafood well worth the waiting for a table. We had the seafood platter which was salmon, mussels and langoustines - it was a feast! Service was tip top
Be the first to ReplyWould recommend unless you are a vegetarian
We were warmly welcomed by front of house into this cosy, quiet restaurant, with nods to Scotland and an informal ambience. While the menu was relatively narrow and more expensive than the mainland restaurants we had visited, the choices reflected its pride in local produce and Scottish cuisine. Both our drink and meal orders arrived in a very acceptable time and our food was nicely presented and delicious - excellent fish and chips and superb moist salmon as main courses, and for dessert a very unusual whiskey, honey and oatmeal ice cream, which my ice cream aficionado husband thoroughly enjoyed, and a huge cheese platter that we should have shared. Itโs worth noting that there was a very limited choice for vegetarians, so if you are one it would be worth checking the menu with the restaurant before booking. Despite the staff being pushed with only 2 on duty throughout our meal this did not impact on our experience, and we appreciated the relaxed, unintrusive and friendly service. As the restaurant was closing a different server arrived with the bill we had asked for and we had a very interesting conversation with this delightful and mature young lady who worked part time while in the 6th form at school. She was very informative about Portree and it was a pleasure to talk with her. Cuchullin isnโt large but is popular, so I would recommend booking in advance. We saw several people being turned away and others who waited outside in hope. Our table in the window was a great place to people watch and all in all, we had a very pleasant evening meal which cheered a dull wet day on Skye.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, delightful staff.
We shared the amazing seafood platter for two and it was delightful. No booking available but it's a popular place so be prepared to wait for a table. We arrived about 5:15 pm and we were seated when they opened at 5:30 pm. I don't think you would have to wait for a table at lunchtime.
The staff and facilities were great. Lovely place for a dinner in Portree. Well worth a visit. Highly recommend the seafood platter.
Poor service
Called the restaurant around 1730pm they said they had loads of tables went there 5 minutes later and they were full. Not sure whether this was a ploy to get people to wait outside their restaurant. Would have rather they were honest!

Another amazing dinner here, really lovely staff, so efficient and helpful whilst delivering the best of meals. Tables well spaced out and lots of happy people!
Be the first to ReplyI recommend the salmon
The salmon was excellent and the dessert ice cream was amazing.
A good variety of food was on the menu and all six of us enjoyed our meals. Good people watching as well
