My wife and I lived in San Francisco for over 30 years before we moved to San Diego about 15 years ago.Last week, I was back in the Bay Area working in Santa Clara. Almost every day, we drove to San Francisco for dinner. However, one night, based on the recommendation of my brother-in-law, we ended up in this restaurant so we headed out there. As we arrive, the hostess sat us down. We got our water and, after several minutes, we are finally met our waiter. Since we had had enough time to review the menu, we ordered a couple of glasses of cabernet and a burrata as our shared appetizer. A while later, we get our burrata. However, we have no plates to use for the appetizer. After waiting a while, we decided to use the small bread plates as plates for our appetizer. At this point, the wine was still to come. Much later, the wine finally arrives midway through our appetizer (shouldn't the drinks come first?), and after we finish the burrata, our waiter brings in the two appetizer plates (a bit too late since our burrata was history at this point!) and drops a salad in the middle of our table. My wife and I looked at each other puzzled as we did not know if this was some standard "courtesy" salad or what. After contemplating the salad for a few minutes since we had not ordered it, our waiter approached to check on us. I asked him about this salad that unexpectedly showed up on our table when we did not order it. A long pause, a stare, and no reaction from him for a few long and awkward seconds. Since he did not react, my wife broke the silence and said: "we did not order this salad, but we will keep it and pay for it". Absolutely no apologies or reaction. And no compensation: we paid for the salad. After the "unexpected salad" we ordered our main dishes. My wife ordered the salmon, I ordered pasta. We waited another long while, although the restaurant was not busy. I do not remember ever ordering pasta at a restaurant and not being offered grated parmesan cheese with it, let alone an "Italian restaurant." A busboy nearby overheard our conversation and was kind enough to fetch the grater and cheese. Our waiter was not attentive to what was happening. These are all issues one does not expect from a pretentious restaurant like this. To top things off, since our engagement with our server began, he addressed my wife as "my dear...". My dear this, my dear that.... We thought that was inappropriate and the restaurant should train their staff to be respectful.
