Everything was phenomenal from start to finish.
We started with the oysters and the squid & scallion skewers, both of which were incredible. For our mains, we shared the monkfish and the fish & chips. Was unsure about ordering the fish & chips given how good everything sounded on the rest of the menu, but we trusted the reviews and have no regrets. I've never had fish & chips that good. Days later, I still can't stop talking about how good this meal was.

A Disappointing Experience at Dame From the moment of arrival, my experience at Dame was far from what I anticipated. Despite arriving early with excitement, I was met with a less-than-welcoming reception. With a chilly evening outside, I was instructed to wait 30 minutes, even though I could see four vacant tables through the window. Understanding the importance of reservations, I patiently waited, only to witness a later-arriving couple being seated before us, seemingly at the table designated for us despite having specified table seating in my reservation. The dining experience did little to improve from there. The meal commenced on an uneven note; the sourdough bread was satisfactory, and the baked oyster managed to delight, but this was where the culinary success ended. The eel and mushroom dish fell flat, lacking in flavor and execution. The tuna, described as a staple dish, was disappointingly basic and marred by chewy, unappealing pieces. The anticipation for the fish and chips turned to disappointment as the restaurant filled with the smell of burnt batter. The arrival of our dish confirmed our fears: burnt fries and overly salty fish that rendered the dish inedible. Throughout this ordeal, the service was dismissive and unapologetic. My polite feedback about the excessive saltiness of the fish was met with a smirk and a dismissive comment from the waitress, further dampening the evening. The request for a fresh batch of fries added another 15 minutes to our already prolonged wait, leaving a lasting impression not just on our evening but on our clothes, which carried the unwelcome scent of burnt fries home with us. In reflection, the experience at Dame was marred by poor service, disappointing culinary execution, and a lack of empathy from the staff. It's disheartening to write such a review, knowing the challenges of the service industry, but it's important for future patrons to be aware. Regrettably, I cannot foresee a return visit to Dame; the search for exceptional dining experiences will continue elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyCute room, nice vibe, pretty good food.
Sat at the counter/bar, which was a little cramped. Enjoyed the fish and chips but they're not the best I've ever had, let alone in my Top 5 (I'm from the PNW where fish and chips are kind of a religion). Good cider. Friendly server.
Be the first to ReplyReally really good.
We had the sourdough bread, skewers, fish & chips, cod with lentils, and sticky toffee pudding. Everything was terrific, particularly the fish & chips, of course. Only caveat is that the prices are a bit high, the space is a bit small, and it's a bit loud (and dark) inside. But the food is fantastic and worth it!

Many reviewers write about the batter of the fish and chips, which is indeed excellent, but I found equal -- if not greater -- joy in the fish itself. The restaurant uses hake, an uncommon selection when cod and haddock are the usual suspects. While not as sweet as haddock or as soft as cod, the choice of hake is a sensible one. The fish is robust, 'poached' perfectly in the frying oil, and does not separate from the batter after frying. Of course, the batter is delightful, drawing inspiration across the pond from the legendary Heston Blumenthal. The chips are properly cut and fried in duck fat. Malt vinegar is sprayed onto the fish, and a bottle is also provided should you desire more. What's missing, if I have to pick a shortcoming, are the curry sauce and mushy peas. The Squid and Scallion Skewer was a nice starter -- I found the scallion to be even tastier than the squid. The menu offers various seafood selections across starters and mains; I'd be interested in trying other dishes next time, though the fish & chips is enough of a reason to return.

known for the fish n chips, but i think every dish i had was amazing. their fish n chips is really, really good. I think the batter was better than any fish n chips i had in London. their beef tartare and oysters are also amazing. their sticky toffee was a 10/10 too.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is literally the restaurant of my dreams.
This meal had basically everything I love -- all my favorite seafoods. Dame is very tiny, but they make it work (in a cute and quaint way of course). We sat at the bar for 2 and got straight away to ordering. Our waitress was extremely helpful in suggesting how much food to order with the portions. Between two, I split the grilled oysters, the tuna tartare, and the fish and chips. Everything was literally a must order. I came for the fish and chips and then was absolutely floored by the other dishes. The toast was thick, soft, and chewy. The oysters were so melty and creamy -- unlike anything I had before with the hollandaise on top. And those fish and chips... best I've had! The batter is so crispy and light while maintaining the fish's soft texture. I will note, the fish and chips is a big portion. But you'll definitely wanna get an entire one for yourself because it is that good. Everything was epic. Also, get the pimm's cup. I had the perfect order.
Be the first to ReplyThe hype is real.
This is the best fish and chip you can get in NYC. I'd even say better than places I had in London and Ireland. The batter is light and crispy and the fish is sweet and tender. Perfect combo. The fries are hand cut and some are extra crispy. I like that. Both are seasoned perfectly. The tartar sauce is great. And I don't even like tartar sauce ! I had the English sticky toffee for dessert. I ate the whole thing. It was that good. I loved the gelato they put a dollop of on top. It was kinda citrusy which worked will with the warm flavor of the toffee. I sat outside bc it's a small restaurant and I'd suggest reservations. I was a walk in. The staff were so attentive to me and my dog ! The only thing is they don't serve coffee or tea. But they do have a nice wine list !

This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC! Everything is delicious, the staff is amazing and the vibe of the restaurant is super chill. If I could continue to get reservations for this place I would go over and over again. Love it and my favorite are the grilled oysters, tuna tartare and fish and chips. I lived in the UK for a while and never had fish and chips as good as these!
Be the first to ReplyI almost didn't want to write this review.
It was hard enough securing a reservation at this small venue which seats less than 30 in doors, and I don't want any additional competition for my next visit. But alas, my higher nature has prevailed and I will share my experience at this tiny jewel of a restaurant. Don't let the casual decor fool you, the cuisine is definitely elevated. I sat at the bar with a prime view of the open kitchen and the staff constantly moving about like a team of whirling dervishes, energetically whipping up delectable dishes. I started with a grilled oyster with green chartreuse hollandaise. Even if you're not a fan of oysters, I highly recommend this appetizer. The oyster was perfectly grilled so the texture was not too slimy, not too rubbery, but just right. The chartreuse hollindaise provided a bit of citrus and herbaceous flavor, and just the right touch of sweetness. There was a real harmony of flavors that made this simple preparation quite the clever dish. The squid and scallion skewers were also very enjoyable. Pro tip: use the freshly toasted sourdough bread to sop up the olive oil and herb based concoction poured over skewers for an additional delightful treat. The smoked whitefish croquettes were a game changer! I had no idea whitefish could be so juicy and flavorful! The fried golden crust had a crunch more satisfying than a potato chip, making the croquettes more addictive than a can of Pringles. I would've gladly noshed on a bowl of those all night, but then I may not have had room for the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life. The fish was exquisitely battered so that the desired texture was present, but not overdone (I despise taking a bite of fried fish only to have a mouthful of fried batter). The gleaming fish inside was faultless, appropriately flaky and succulent with a mild flavor that was drawn out by the added malt vinegar. The accompanying chips were warm, crips on the outside and appropriately soft inside, each one, a bite of delight. You've heard of chef's kiss, but this actually made me want to kiss the fish! The skate cheek kabab was flavorful with marinated peppers and yogurt. The flavor profile was very reminiscent of Mediterranean cuisine. The tender baked cod was exemplary and complimented by hearty butter beans and delectable chunks of savory bacon. The veritable expertise in seafood displayed during my experience blew me away. I'd happily return....if I'm lucky enough to secure a reservation again.

Even if you enjoy the food, factor in the dry cleaning bill. Your clothes will stink. There is far more to say but not worth the effort. Minorities also beware.
Be the first to ReplyAs soon as we locked the dates for our engineering all
As soon as we locked the dates for our engineering all hands, I understood my mission. I had to work my magic to get us into the legendary Dame! If you haven't lived in Manhattan, you may not realize that tables larger than four, two in most cases, at super popular spots with top chefs are next to impossible to get. Our party of 8 took up over half of this tiny establishment, and we devoured nearly the entire menu. The feast included grilled oysters with green chartreuse hollandaise, squid & scallion skewers, smoked whitefish croquettes, steamed manila clams with cider & pancetta, fish & chips, sourdough bread & butter, vanilla posset with rhubarb & meringue, sticky toffee pudding. I've written about this spot before, but this time I was shocked they could top my last experience. Their fish and chips is still the triple platinum standard I judge others by, and I could eat those oysters and squid skewers until I passed out. If you get the mussels make sure to ask for their fresh bread and butter to soak up that juice at the bottom of the bowl. If you came to drink they have a refined cocktail selection and a wonderful set of wines to pair your experience with. Always save room for that sticky toffee pudding too! No lie! This entire meal is what I call death row quality. They don't miss! It's worth every ounce of effort to land a reservation here and I can't wait to go back again!

Food: 5/5 | Service: 4/5 | Experience: 4/5Dame is certainly one of the most unique restaurants in the Greenwich Village area, with a menu that focuses on seafood with a British flair. When I first walked in, I was a bit struck by the size of the restaurant -- it only accommodates a few small tables, and I honestly felt a bit claustrophobic throughout the meal. Nevertheless, the service was good, and the food was really amazing. Among the highlights of our meal were the caraflex cabbage with mussels and horseradish, the skate with chantarelles and bacon, and the kedgeree rice with curried crab. Everything was incredibly flavorful, and seafood was truly placed at the center of every dish. If you manage to score a reservation, definitely don't skimp on dessert -- the sticky toffee pudding might be one of the best restaurant desserts I've ordered in New York City. Overall, I'd say that Dame is definitely worth a try, although it might be best to go in the late spring/summer months when it's a bit warmer and outdoor seating is available.

Got lucky with a same-day reservation on a Saturday and had another great meal here! My boyfriend and I sat at the counter and ordered:+ grilled oysters with green chartreuse hollandaise - sooo good+ squid & scallion skewers - ditto + scallop mousse with cara cara oranges & trout roe - letdown, would skip next time + caraflex cabbage with mussels & horseradish - still the best thing ever+ Fish & chips - excellent + vanilla posset with poached pears & meringue - good but would also skip this because the toffee pudding is all you need+ sticky toffee pudding - perfectionNext time: I want to switch it up - time to put the fish and chips on the back burner and try some other entrees!

I was never impressed by the service. The food is excellent seafood but nothing to write home about. Glad I went, but won't be back.Best thing: fries, worst thing: clams
Be the first to ReplyI came to check out the hype, the hype was not worth it.
Reservation: Gone within like 30 seconds at noon the X weeks you have to reserve in advance. I tried to get a table but ended up getting bar seats (not a good option)Vibe: Tiny restaurant with room for 10-15 parties total, which is why it's so hard to make a resy. The open kitchen is deep-frying food and has horrible ventilation. Agreed with the other reviewers that your clothes WILL smell when you leave. We had a hard time breathing well at the bar because the air was so smoky. This was unpleasant and made us want to leave soonerFood: it's ok.. I've had better similar seafood dishes at Japanese spots. Fish and chips are the star dish here which is what I was curious to try. The batter is amazing Japanese tempura style, and the fish itself is soft and flaky. Worth a try but not worth coming back.
Be the first to ReplySave your money.
This closet passing as a restaurant is SO overrated, it isn't funny. Welcome to the NYC dining scene post-Covid. First, I can't believe the hoops I had to jump through to get a reservation one month in advance. That's because the restaurant is so tiny, the wait staff has to get wine bottles (and possibly other things) from a different location. Management stresses you are only permitted a certain amount of time at your table. They are so tightly booked, turnover rules have to be enforced. With that, the seats (at the tables) are SO uncomfortable, I can't imagine anyone wanting to sit longer than fifteen minutes, which is how long it took for pain to register in my buttocks. Not all seats are the same. Some poor folks are forced to sit on backless stools at a narrow, communal table. God forbid you show up in winter coats and/or shopping bags. You might as well leave those things at the curb. There is no room. God forbid you're even slightly overweight. You will not fit in most of those seats. You feel encouraged to order wine or cocktails. Maybe that will numb you to the experience. The wait staff has nowhere to hide. They linger, and spend most of the evening playing dodg'em, trying not to bump into each other. I felt sorry for them. The open kitchen is in your face, with a TERRIBLE ventilation system. There was cooking smoke in the air the entire night, which irritated my eyes. The music was 80's pop, probably playing a bit too loud. The food tasted OK. There was nothing terrible, but everything was marked up to an inappropriate price-point for what you got. I was particularly disappointed in the fish n' chips. The batter on the fish is nicely colored, with the texture of Japanese tempura, but any spectacular flavor was absent. At least it wasn't over-salted. The chips were extremely ordinary. You could find better at KFC. They serve the fish on top of the chips, and the steam may cause the chips to go soggy. Just plain wrong. The fish itself was lovely, but deserved so much more. The tartar sauce was good, but barely enough. At $30, the dish is highway robbery. It's barely worth $15, which was the price of our dessert. I don't remember ever paying $15 for a dessert anywhere in my dining life. At least the dessert wasn't overwrought with sugar. This place is for young, trendy folk who know little about food, and don't care how they spend their money. Sorry to say, I will not return.

One of the most popular restaurants that you have to reserve in advance as soon as they open up the reservations on your desired day. Cosy restaurant with friendly staff. Food are good for sharing. Fresh ingredients though the clams and squids are a bit too salty. The cabbage dish was interesting in terms of flavor combinations, worth trying. Toffee pudding was a nice finish if you like something very sweet.
Be the first to ReplyA friend secured a last minute reservation and we all
A friend secured a last minute reservation and we all excitedly ordered the fish and chips. Not sure if it is because of the hype but I was severely disappointed. It was not a big piece of fish and the flavor wasn't that impressive. The grilled oysters, on the other hand, were amazing. I liked them more than the fish. I now understand why a reservation is so hard to get! The space is tiny and it's an open kitchen, so you will leave with the smell of fried fish on your clothes.

Great ambiance - went here on a Thursday night just before closing. Highlights were the oysters and fish and chips (so crispy!). So delicious and fresh. Service was friendly and efficient.

Great win list. Super service. Don't sleep on the grilled oysters or tuna tartare.
Be the first to ReplyWe got a last minute reservation for the outdoor dining on
We got a last minute reservation for the outdoor dining on a Wednesday night after having a Resy Notify on for a few weeks but never being able to snag one at a decent time. For two people we shared the grilled oysters, squid skewers, tuna tartare, special of the night tomato sandwich, and the fish and chips. We were blown away by the grilled oysters and wished we had ordered more- I also don't like oysters but these especially with the sauce were amazing. Everything we had was so good. If we were to come back we would 100% get the oysters, skewers, and tartare again. I think the tomato sandwich and fish and chips are a one and done. Not to say they weren't great, if you haven't tried them here you should but there were also several other entrees that caught my eye!
