Good food great service.
It's one our favorite place to eat our traditional Indian food.
Be the first to ReplyFlavors are great.
Baigan barta is very authentic. Saag was very flavorful. Great selection of Indian whiskeys too. Why 3 stars? The value is totally off. Order $60 per person, and you'll still need to get a slice of pizza later. Here's a good way to quantify it. Order the Saag and you'll have less food in your bowl than any salsa served as snack at Mexican restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyPatha is a big oily, not as dry and crispy as I expected.
The ribs is a bit fatty too. The chicken pot is delicious. The cod dish is ok. Cocktail of smoky bourbon has very strong smoky flavor. The menu is a bit pricey. I will go back to give other dishes a try again.

A trendy spot for regional, Indian eats -- I love the chef and concept a ton, and have been wanting to go since I first saw a little documentary on Youtube. The vibes here are really fun and it's tucked into the heart of the LES, inside of a larger market. The decor is fun and the waiters are attentive, though the food does take a while to come out. The food definitely skews more meat-heavy, so I wish there were a few more non-paneer vegetarian things. That being said... the Paneer Tikka was easily some of the best paneer I've had. The drinks were fairly good -- I liked the Lassi but the Nimbu Pani was a bit too spicy for my taste. Overall, a fun concept and I'd come back or try out some of the other restaurants under the Unapologetic Foods banner!

The menu has completely changed since the last time I was here. I got the aam sutra which was a very unique cocktail combining mezcal, cinnamon syrup and different chutneys. It was like drinking a well seasoned Indian inspired meal on a hot summer day. Given how delicious the cocktail was and how available the bar was for walk in, I think this is the way to go for all future dine ins here. For the meals, we shared the bangan barta, which was a really good shredded eggplant dish that paired well with rice or chapati. The fish fry sounded appetizing but I wish I had looked at the reviews prior. The fish itself (even with the batter) was lacking in flavor. For an app and the portion size, I can't believe we paid 21 dollars for it. The achaari lamb ribs were inedible. It was over 50 percent fat which we couldn't eat. The star of the show was the Paneer Nawobi Korma. It was one of the best Indian curries I've had in a long time. I think for a better experience, skip the snacks and grill and go for the curry or main dishes and/or a cocktail or two. Overall, I have to drop to 3 bc of the lamb ribs. I wish we had known it was going to be all fat. But the curry and the cocktail were 5/5! The service at the bar was great too so I'll be coming back but dining smarter next time!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, ambience, and service.
Loved the decorations on the wall. The appetizers were small.
Be the first to ReplyI've been meaning to try this place for such a long time
I've been meaning to try this place for such a long time now. Absolutely loved every single dish. Tried every single vegetarian dish on the menu and would highly recommend them all. They're all VERY different from anything I've had before. Paan drink- very unique, tastes like paan in a liquid form. Would definitely recommend ending with a few of their desserts. Phenomenal service. Cute little restaurant inside of the market.

Super disappointed with the food! I had heard so much about this restaurant and really wanted to try. The only good dish that was amazing was their paneer, tasted so fresh and extremely soft. Apart from that it was all so sad. For appetizers we had paneer and fish fry. Paneer at dhamaka is easily the best paneer I have had in America. The fish fry was bad, it was bland and nothing special about it. For the main we got methi paneer and chicken kalimirch, both of them were so underwhelming. And the paratha we could order with it was the worst. It was flaky, greasy and so bad. I am now sure if the biryanis are better but this wasn't good, it was $170 for the meal.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive, but totally worth it.
I was a bit worried that this place was totally over-hyped based on the other reviews, but I think this is one of the rare instances where the vegetarian food totally outshines the meat. The gucchi ki subz biryani (paneer, vegetable, and mushroom biryani) was absolutely incredible! This dish has it all: tons of different spices, lots of hearty vegetables, some savoriness from the morel mushrooms, creaminess from paneer, and plenty of heat. It's $47, but it's also big enough to feed three, which brings it into reasonable price territory for a group. I ended up taking quite a bit of it home and it was still delicious the next day. This might be my favorite biryani in New York, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
Be the first to ReplyThe most overhyped restaurant.
The food is okay, but nothing worth noting. The chaat didn't have much flavor and had no texture. The fish fry and gosht champ were okay. Overall it was just underwhelming. We also made reservations two weeks in advance for indoor dining, and yet, when we arrived we were seated in their heated outdoor patio. It was so cold though that we needed to eat with our winter coats on. Just do yourself a favor and pass on this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is definitely worth a visit.
The portions are larger and flavorful. The goat neck biryani and paneer were delicious. I recommend making a reservation and coming with a small group. Staff is also very attentive!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I ate at Dhamaka on February 25th for a 6:45
My wife and I ate at Dhamaka on February 25th for a 6:45 reservation. The food was just ok. It seems overrated, overhyped, and overpriced. Most disappointing had a 6:45 reservation and were rushed out at 7:50 and told they need the table for an 8pm. I'm sorry I live in the neighborhood and there lots of other choices. Rushing guests out and essentially asking them to leave is unacceptable and makes the customer feel like they don't matter and that the restaurant is only interested in money. In 25 years in NYC I've never been rushed out like that- the booking system should be changed and this created a very disappointment and expensive experience for us.

Customer service is everything....My reservation was for 5pm. We checked in at 4:30 and was told to come back. We went back at 5 and was seated outside as opposed to inside. It was very cold outside so we asked for a 2 seater inside. We were told that table was reserved for someone else. Puzzled, I said 'but we are here now and outside is cold. Isn't it first come first served since you can't reserve tables online?' I was rebuffed and escorted outside. The heaters went on and we got to enjoy the fumes they emitted for 10 minutes then it got warm, just not warm enough to remove my coat. For 48 minutes, right when we got our check, the 2 seater remained empty. Not. Cool. We totally could've been more comfortable inside. I was cold so I didn't want to get something else to drink or dessert. Our server was amazing. All three stars are for him and the goat neck biryani. They get docked a star for the seating situation and the $24 cup of tea that was severely overpriced. Overall, very expensive Indian cuisine that you can find for a much better price and more comfortable seating elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyIt's an experience worth doing, if you like Indian food.
It's a new twist to all old authentic dishes with new taste with good service and and ambiance. It's worth it.
Be the first to Reply3.5/4 stars. My boyfriend and I made a reservation a month
3.5/4 stars. My boyfriend and I made a reservation a month in advanced for an early Valentine's day dinner, so we were very eager when the day finally came for us to try out Dhamaka. Additionally, we watched a lot of youtube videos to figure out what to order in advanced. We ordered the Papdi Chaat, Gurda Kapoora, and Ajwani Paneer Tikka for appetizer. The papdi chaat was very flavorful with a lot of different textures. My boyfriend really enjoyed the Gurda Kapoora and it was probably the highlight of his meal - he called it very interesting and flavorful. The paneer was good, but honestly didn't find it to be anything speciali. I ordered the Vegetable Pulao for my main - I wasn't really impressed... the rice was a bit overcooked and the main flavor profile was just dull spice. My boyfriend ordered the Goat Neck Biryani - he said it was very good but he's had better biriyani at other Indian restaurants in the city. Overall, we're glad we tried it, but don't believe it lived up to the hype.

I had the champaran meat which was super tender and flavorful. I expected it to be spicer but still was delish. The ragda pattice was my favorite dish of the night. Very flavorful and good spice. Next time I'm getting the goat biryani for sure - it looked amazing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and ambiance.
Loved the drinks that complimented their menu. We had the biriyani and paneer and chaat. All amazing.
Be the first to ReplyA fantastic time at Dhamaka.
Drinkd and food on point- but the food is spicy - be warned. Unapologetic Indian food!!!!
Be the first to ReplyLamb shank was excellent but tremendously spicy.
Fried eggplant was fine but could've been swapped for something else.
Be the first to ReplyDropped by Dhamaka for a late Valentine's Day celebration.
Reservations are hard to come by so make sure to make them exactly at midnight a month before. I did and boy, I was not disappointed! Dhamaka is located inside Essex market so the area is a bit more casual, but we dressed up and had a great time! Drinks:1. Brown Munde: 5/5, tastes like Kolkata roads and nostalgia, I didn't know a drink could do this!2. Paaji: 4/5, solid drink but a little more fruity than expected 3. Chulbul 5/5, light and refreshing with small fruit pops of flavor4. Paan E Bahar 5/5, had no idea that it was possible for a drink to taste like paan, but this was the perfect thing to finish the meal off with!Appetizers:1. Doh Khleh: 4/5, a soft chewy pork salad. This one was definitely the highest on the spice levels out of all the dishes we got.2. Tabak Maaz: 5/5, I tried to lift this to put on my plate and the meat just fell off the bone. One of my favorites of the night.3. Sigdiwala Chicken: 5/5, Some of the best chicken I've had in my life. Spiced to perfection and tender.Mains: 1. Champaran Meat: 5/5, another favorite. Tender goat meat in a savory gravy.2. Lamb Nihari: 4/5, a little too salty for my personal taste but again, meat was falling off the bone! Sides:Raita: 2/5, my only complaint of the night. I'm not sure why the easiest dish was the one I didn't love, but I used this more as a tool to cut the spice. All in all, Dhamaka is a foodie's heaven, especially if you're down to eat authentic South Asian food. I will be back!
Be the first to ReplyYou have to look at all these reviews appropriately.
People who write one review either supporting or not supporting should be ignored. As a fan of Indian food, I will say that this place is absolutely top-tier terms of its food options. It was just pricey on the other side but truly worth the taste and portions. We enjoyed everything, but most of this food is SPICY, so you may need to request it less spicy for ore sensitive palates.
Be the first to ReplyFinally made it to Essex Market to try Dhamaka after years
Finally made it to Essex Market to try Dhamaka after years of hearing about it. Yes, I think it's worth the hype- the food is different from what you've had at Indian restaurants before, with a mix dishes you'd have at home and some elevated restaurant dishes. My favorite dishes were the ragda pattice (almost as good as my mom's, which is a big compliment!) and vegetable pulao- both cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. I loved the texture of the homemade paneer, but the paneer tikka somehow lacked seasoning (maybe the only mild dish on the menu), and the paneer methi was good, but a little oily for me. But otherwise I personally don't mind the generous amounts of ghee topping and used to cook the food - love that richness, but one of friends thought the flavor was too dominant. The chaat and bharela marcha were good, but not stand-out. Also enjoyed the presentation and unapologetically Indian Vinod pressure cookers :) I will say the food is VERY spicy and they don't modify. I can handle some heat but this much actually takes away from my enjoyment of the food. That's probably the main reason I won't be rushing back. Similar to my experience at Rowdy Rooster. Cocktail program is solid - they've incorporated some fun Indian flavors and the bright colors of the restaurant space. The service was excellent, and our waiter was very attentive and forthcoming with recommendations. Overall, a great experience and I recommend anyone who likes spicy food to try!

Lot of Hype and publicity for this place and we had an occasion to go to and I booked a table a month in advance and was eagerly waiting to enjoy some good food..... unfortunately it was a major disappointment.... The food was pedantic, greasy and down right bad. Doesn't deserve a Michelin 3 stars.
Be the first to ReplyIt was ok.
It was expensive. It's one time thing. I have had better Indian food if not better. It was just nice to see friends. But the one dessert they have was good. They just have one.

We tried the goats neck biryani, the lasooni prawn, the ajwani paneer tikka, and the papdi chaat. Of the items we ordered my favorite was the papdi chaat, though I do wish it came with something to dip in it rather than us having to order that for a separate charge. I thought the paneer was a bit dry and the goat neck biryani was good but too spicy for me to eat much of.
