The first trying Din Tai Fung was in Singapore and myself and my family absolutely loved it! we’ve tried this chain multiple times but are first timers trying in America. We were lucky to have searched and found one in Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara so we made a reservation for lunchtime. first arriving the place was very busy, there were queues for both takeaway and ordering in so I would definitely book in advance to save time! We ordered a number of things: From their signature dishes we ordered the crab and pork xiao long Bao that came with 10 pieces. They were nicely made and very delicious and will always be my go to order when having dim sum especially from here!! ** If you’re not a fan of crab or anything fishy tasting in general I would go for their signature pork xiao buns, they are such as lovely!! The steamed buns were also very nice, they come with two pieces each, we tried the vegetarian buns (which were my favourite), the chicken buns, and the pork buns were also nice, and for dessert i would definitely recommend the red bean buns, they are sweet tasting and a perfect alternative to your everyday desserts, we ordered 4 pieces of these to finish off our meal. We also tried two different types on wonton soup, one with vegetable pork and one vegan wonton soup. Both were lovely but if your palate is more on the meaty side go for the vegetable pork. For a first time try we ordered the truffle pork xiao long buns which were surprisingly lovely (if you’re not keen on truffle like myself) second was the fish dumplings which were made of cod! These were amazing! they were very tasteful and fresh. There was not an overpowering smell or taste of ‘fishiness’, I highly recommend! And third was the spicy shrimp and pork wontons, personally these were not my favourite, and sort of odd tasting but it was nicely presented and the wonton pastry was fresh to taste. Finally we ordered some vegetables to go with the dim sum, and I do personally think that the chains in Singapore were much better at cooking their vegetables to taste and texture. The Taiwanese cabbage was my favourite out of the vegetables we ordered, it was nice and sweet and the portion was good. We expected our order of the sautéed broccoli to be Chinese broccoli but it wasn’t. They were also undercooked and so was very crunchy to eat. And the portion sautéed bok Choy was also generous but unfortunately they were very very bland and some were also undercooked , these are usually full of flavour and are always a family favourite to eat. However the overall experience was good, I would just say that I have tasted better vegetables in other chains in Asia and that the pork tastes slightly more different over here than it did over there.
