Returned following a disappointing lunch
Following a disappointing lunch a few weeks ago for many various reasons and vowing never to return, i communicated with the restaurant manager who assured me an investigation would take place and a full review of what i complained about would take place and urged me to return again. So we did. We returned on a Wednesday lunchtime and tried the "Taste History - Labyrinth" seasonal set menu, which quite frankly was superb in every way. It included Venison Tartare Grilled Lamb Belly Octopus, Whelk and Cockles Bulls Head Rhyton Olive Oil ‘Perfume’ the octopus, whelk and cockles was probably one of, if not the best dish I have ever eaten. I won't describe the dishes in full, despite having the full information card and receiving a full history lesson for each dish, but will include some pictures and urge anyone to try it The matching wines complimented the dishes precisely and were mainly Greek in origin. We finished with a nitrogen made ice cream form the theatrical style trolly. All in all it was an amazing experience I certainly believe in bad days in the office and our last visit was one of them, but this experience reminded my of previous good visits and we would return again...
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and reassuringly expensive!
Located within the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Knightsbridge, London. Excellent restaurant! Food descriptions stimulate the brain. All dishes are incredibly flavoursome. Service is impeccable. All round excellent and not surprisingly reassuringly expensive! Lunch for two with an average bottle of wine (2 courses only) £310. Worth saving up for.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Flavours, masterful cookery!
Came here for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. Was a little apprehensive having read about the Chef's 'different' way of cooking! My apprehension melted away straight away when the food started arriving. Before this though, I loved the choice of how much detail we wanted about our food when it arrived. We picked the middle option but I wished we had gone for the fullest explanation!! The meal was amongst the best I have enjoyed, stunning flavours in the sauces and fish cookery was spot on.
Be the first to Replyoverall great !
we had a great time, food was very good and quite interesting, however staff was a bit pushy and seemed to be in a constant rush, with was felt quite a lot
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
I took my brother and cousin here as a serious treat for my cousin's 40th birthday. As you can imagine, given the price tag and prestige of the restaurant this was a serious treat that came with high expectations. On arrival, we had an incredibly warm reception from the lady at front of house and the restaurant itself is beautiful. We had a great table overlooking the park and the wait staff were faultless. The rest of the experience was sadly very disappointing and on reflection perhaps the three of us shouldn't have all ordered the same thing. I had intended on going for the 5 course tasting menu but there was one starter that really called out to me which was the Marrowbone Welshcake not on the menu so we went a la carte. It was a tasty starter is probably the best I could describe it as. Then we all ordered the turbot for main with a side of cabbage and were upsold the chips. All very nice although my turbot was slightly overcooked. Lastly, the Tipsy Cake which was delicious. If served this meal anywhere else I would have said it was good and it was exactly that. It was a nice meal. The sad reality was then upon remembering that this was a two Michelin star restaurant owned by Heston Blumenthal. The bill came to around £770 and I would go as far to say this was a total rip-off. There was not one wow factor to any of the food and honestly would have rathered gone to any other french bistro for escargot and a (very small) bit of fish where the bill had been 1/4 of the price. Fine dining this was not which was a great shame. Thank you however to the fantastic wait staff and lovely reception team you were impeccable.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal!
Amazing meal, service and view! We were the first sitting as the restaurant opened,l for lunch, we didn’t expect to have the place to ourselves so the atmosphere was very quiet.
Be the first to ReplySome fantastic food but we will never return
We have been to DINER 5 times over the years since it opened. 3 Years ago Dad had a series of mini strokes leaving him with memory problems and mobility issues. We wanted to return to DINER again, especially as Dad worked at the Hyde Park Hotel for many years in his early career, so a trip down memory lane. We booked for a friday afternoon in half term. the city was teeming with visitors and tourists so felt lucky to get a table in this 2 michelin starred restaurant. When we arrived the restaurant was empty with only 4 other tables being used. We were very surprised at it being empty. we ordered our favourite starter and it was as usual superb. Meat Fruit. An amazing dish that takes 3 days to make and is modestly priced at £26. Next we opened again for an old time favourite, the pork chop. This was sadly very disappointing. It has been changed from the usuall big fat pork chop with a bone and crispy rind, cooked on a searing hot grill, so a small piece of fatty pork that is cooked in what I imagine to be a sous vide way, as its very tender and pink (rare) and the fat is just white. the bone has gone, the accompanying vegetables have gone and it is served with a very tasty spelt side dish. This is £59. To add a few triple cooked chips is another £9, so for £68 you get a very underwhelming dish and it is hugely over priced and no where near the £68 price tag. There were 3 of us and we all had the same so nearly £220 for three main courses that were far worse than they used to be was a real negative for the event. Dessert was for me a Tipsy cake which as usual was superb and the others had a cheese cake, described as amazing the best cheesecake ever. Gone is a ganache in a tea cup and now replaced by a tiny tiny tartlet with a ganache in. We are not rich so an experience like this is saved for and knowing it would be expensive we had hoped it would have been better. we will not be back for a few reasons : 1. I looked through the wine list and found a bottle of red for £45. The wine waiter tried to upsell but I asked for a bottle of the cheapest red wine they had. I always do as i cannot tell the difference between the cheapest and a £100 bottle. When the bill came at the end the wine served was £59 and certainly more expensive than the £45 bottle I pointed out. They argued that the wine was what I said yes to when they brought it over.. 2. £70 for a plate of meat and a few veggies is a rip off, given it has changed from what it always was. If you changed the meat fruit completely but kept the name then there would be outrage. 3. I specifically asked that a booking near the end of service wouldn't mean we were rushed. This is a real let down as they stated sweeping the restaurat and cleaning up for the next service I guess.. The table was left covered in bread crumbs and a dirty plate for far longer than would have been during the first part of our diner. The cleaners weren't sweeping directly around us but we felt that given its huge price tag, the dining area could be left clear until all diners had gone. We felt like we are holding them up and should hurry up. Some elements were amazing but we felt the prices don't justify what we received and this was backed up by the restaurant being empty on a friday in a half term. the total bill for 3 diners was £559 and this is the same price as Ive just paid for a 7 night all included cruise in the August school holidays. Sadly after 6 visits we will never return.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic evening
We visited for my belated birthday meal. The food was amazing and the service was outstanding. All waiting staff were on point and our every need was met before asking. The sommelier looked after us (and our glasses) perfectly. Vladimir was our waiter for the evening and we couldn’t have asked for more from him. Each course was exceptional in presentation and flavour. The kitchen team know how to do their thing! Big thanks to you all for one of the best evenings we’ve both had!!
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming
I had been looking forward to going to Dinner by Heston for a long time. There are so many places in London to try but I must have mentioned it a few times as I was treated to the evening as a gift. Unfortunately, our overall experience was being left underwhelmed. The meat fruit ( the famous star of the show) looked great and it does have that wow factor but as many have said it did taste like any other parfait. No interesting or unique flavours. Definitely not unique or surprising. The other items in the tasting menu were regular. I think if I went to my local bistro pub and received this menu I would be impressed but for 2 Michelin stars…. I think something is off. The week before I was in Amsterdam and visited BOUGAINVILLE. Heston’s has nothing on this place for one comparison . We had a crab amuse bouche to start which was also very underwhelming. The service was good and friendly. However, they forgot bits which impacted the evening. I would not return or recommend actually. I also planned to go to Fat Duck this year but that now off my list. The hotel itself is lovely as is the extensive wine list. Lots of choice. I also enjoyed the option to have full description of each dish or to let the food do the talking. Unfortunately, an interesting back story just is not enough to make Dinner by Heston. I feel when people think of Heston they think of the lights, camera and action. However, this is a normal restaurant experience.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and service
We came for a birthday celebration and were not disappointed. Despite some of the reviews below, our expectations were truly met. The food was absolutely delicious. The mandarin starter was superb and extremely creamy. The mains were also stunning and the mushroom pie was delicious with a rich truffle sauce. The chips were good and very crispy. We less liked the deserts which were quite bitter but the Jamie dodger at the end was delicious. Service was also fantastic. Compared to many other places we've eaten at, we felt the money for food and service was inline with expectations. Would definitely recommend this for a special dinner.
Be the first to ReplyJust superb
This was by far the very best dining experience I and my family have had - EVER. ( and we have been to some pretty decent places ) Ignore any negative feedback- this a MUST do experience. The food was superb , complimented by the warm and friendly staff, the atmosphere- just everything. You can opt to have food delivered, or explained, or all of that plus the history of the dish - we opted for the latter and were cared for by MARINA - Thank you for a memorable evening- made by you - - and this is the point - the total experience, staff, food, theatre - was made by the service - not overbearing, not slow - just on point from start to finish . We were privileged to be be given a brief tour, introduced to the kitchen staff opposite the chefs table and also taken around the private dining room - which for me was a superb added bonus. It’s an open kitchen and what struck me was the calm, clean organised work carried out by these fabulous people - nothing messy/shouty in sight - I loved every single minute of the evening from when I took my coat off. If I could rate it higher- I would-. WE WILL BE BACK
Be the first to ReplyExpensive but a great meal
Tasting menu for me and my wife, a glass of champers to start, a bottle of reasonably priced white wine with the meal, one glass of red each, a glass of sweet dessert wine each, and cup of tea at the end. £720 for both of us. Expensive but GREAT food and we had a brilliant night. Definitely a treat for a special occasion but be prepared to spend!
Be the first to ReplySo disappointing and expensive
Was looking forward to eating here for ages. Finally got to try it and was left underwhelmed. The meat fruit looked great but just tasted like any other regular pate. 56 pounds for a pork chop that was a little tough. The tipsy cake was poor. Bland sponge with an even blander custard. The pineapple was just warm, not caramelised. No canapés or amuse bouche to start. 160 pounds for 1 person. Better places out there for less money.

I love this restaurant this is defio one of my favourite in London. The views are beautiful. The staff are super friendly and professional and very knowledgeable. The food is insane, we could not get enough of it. I don’t really have a bad word to say about it.
Be the first to ReplyNot up to scratch for 2 Michelin stars
Not quite as we expected. Situated in a huge room at the back of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel this was a restaurant totally lacking atmosphere and had the impression of being about getting as many “bums on seats” as possible.
Very disappointed with the sommelier who was very slap dash pouring expensive wine slopping it all over the table and leaning over guests to pour into other glasses.
When it comes to the food the starters were superb can’t complain. But the main courses were very run of the mill just steak and chips and very small portions of salmon (totally overpriced at £52).
Very expensive for what it was not helped by being charged £21 for 3 carafes of tap water. Shame on you Heston!
Won’t be returning.
Really nice but lacked atmosphere
We really liked the food and the service was good.
But for the price we expected more atmosphere and a bit of flair.
Come here if:
You like good quality food.
Don't mind a high price tag.
Best points:
Good quality food
Efficient and helpful service
Extensive wine menu
Bad points:
Lacked atmosphere
Lacked flair
Bit expensive - not sure if it's worth the price tag.
Worth its Michelin Star
We booked this at relatively short notice so it was nice to be able to get a table on 16/12/21 so near to Xmas.
The only let down for us was the fact the bar in the restaurant was too full to allow any more guests in line with Covid rules. So we had a drink in the afternoon tea area of the Mandarin Oriental. Dreary and the staff desperate to close up by 8:30pm.
Once seated in Hestons the magic of the evening began. We had a wonderful table where we had a birds eye view of the kitchen, the private dining room when the door opened and the entire restaurant. The ambiance was just perfect.
To start we had the Meat Fruit and the Salamagundy. Both devine and didn’t disappoint. For mains Spiced Squab Pigeon and Hereford Ribeye. Both excellent although the triple cooked chips are better at our local restaurant. I tried my husband’s ribeye that he said he’d had better elsewhere but I can honestly say it was mouth-wateringly tender. Desserts of Chocolate Bar and Sambocade were amazing.
When the Maitre D asked how the meal was and my husband mentioned about the beef in no great detail we found it had been taken off the bill when we came to pay. That’s service.
You will not come away with a bill less than circa £500 for two with drinks but this is a special occasion restaurant unless you are mega rich to be able to frequent regularly. You have to do it once!!
Amazing food, small room for improvement
Booked in for wife's birthday last weekend. Arrived early to get a drink at the bar however it was full so they recommended the Japanese bar downstairs which was very nice. Our table was ready early but we did not want to rush.
The food was phenomenal along with the wine. The sommelier made a great choice with the wine and we came away very satisfied with everything we were served. Was worth the money and can see why they have two Michelin Stars.
Our only issue was the table location. We were sat towards the back of the restaurant and next to the staff area/till, we felt more part of a staff room rather than the main restaurant. Not too much of a problem for me as I was facing away however my wife's view all night was the staff as they prepared people's food for the tables and people's bills. We seemed to be the only table this close to the tills and staff however, we did feel it took away from our experience. We felt the ambience and atmosphere was not great however, this may have just been for us and where we were sitting.
Still some of the best food we have ever had, tinted by the table location and atmosphere. Service was very good and no issues however, we have had better in London.
Average by London standards and not for special occasion
Food is very nice but similar to any decent gastropub or restaurant in London. Not 2 michelin stars by any means and doesn’t compare with other excellent London restaurants, with or without stars. The infamous meat fruit is nothing more than a very simple chicken pate with a mandarin coating. Any foie gras with a decent jam on the side is similar or better really. Beware if you are planning for a special evening, the decor and art de la table are very minimal. No tablecloths, silver cutlery or anything of the sort. Similarly, no surprise canapes, amuse bouche or anything of the sort that is the norm in michelin star restaurants in between the tasting menu. The staff while accommodating, were trying to upsell non stop without any finesse, quite weird for an establishment like that and disrespectful. The whole experience felt quite corporate and inattentive.
Overall not bad but nothing memorable either. Would definitely not recommend or visit again.
FLUSHING MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN
It was a proper disappointment considering that I was looking forward to it because of the Chef behind the scenes, (not sure whether he goes there).
The food was not bad but you can get exactly the same anywhere else but paying much less. Ordering wines its like you are given a list of wines with high-end prices but they aren’t so you are better off ordering by glass which is still an extortionate amount of Money.
Anyway, the location is top and people go there anyway, shame for the industry though!
Phenomenal
We visited Dinner for lunch this past weekend. Everything about this place is special - the hotel, the welcome, the room, the smells, the lighting, and that's before any food or drink touches your lips!
The food of course is just utterly delicious, as you would expect. We enjoyed meat fruit, salamagundy, followed by pigeon, rib eye and the tipsy cake to finish. Ironically I won't say much about the food, put simply, its the best food I have ever tasted and I can't put into words how good it is.
For me, what made the experience so special and memorable was Geraint. He was the head waiter (I believe they have a far more suitable title for him at Dinner, but I can't remember it! But I recommend... King of the Restaurant, or something more suited to this legend). A fellow Welshman, he (and the rest of the staff) were unbelievably friendly, warm, welcoming, kind, considerate. Just unreal service. Geraint showed us over to the kitchen, and introduced us to Jon himself. The coolest head chef I've ever come across. Again, so friendly, so warm and he's literally in the middle of a service and took the time to say hello to us simple folk!
I cannot say enough good things about this place and these people. I was emotional at the whole experience and I will never forget it. You HAVE to go here, it is worth every penny and I would pay double, or triple because this team is clearly so talented, so passionate, but also a bunch of really bloomin lovely people. Thank you to everyone at Dinner.
One of the best eating experiences of my life
I went here for my 30th birthday and it was exquisite from start to finish. The service was on another level. The cocktails, wine and food were spectacular and it was worth every penny. I had the meat fruit, beef and tipsy cake and it was one of the most enjoyable meals I have ever had but what was on another level was the atmosphere and service. We did not want to leave.
