Got take out from here the other day.
We ordered the huarrches and enchilades rojas. We like the huarrches because you don't see it on a lot of menu's. I liked how it had beans inside the masa and it came with a generous portion of carnitas. The enchilades were delicious too. Both were slightly pricy, but good food overall. Look forward to eating here in person soon.

I admire the authenticity of the food made here- there is no hiding uncommon ingredients, or pandering to mild-eaters who can't handle the extra spice. Our favorite- the chilaquiles- best ones I've had in the area. The café de olla is a winner too, and if you are looking for something healthier, I think they have fresh juice as well. The décor and ambiance does take you back to what'd you find in any street in Mexico city, which just helps to completely submerge you into the eating experience.

came 1:30 pm on a Saturday and the restaurant was packed a gem in the mission area for authentic mexican food!! my server recommended me the pozole verde first time having it. such a comforting dish that was both tangy and citrusy. chicken was really tender as well and enjoyed the tortilla chips/fresh accompaniments of lettuce, radish, onions that were served with it.

Wow !! Ok, this is the best traditional Mexico food I've had in my 25 years of living in SF. I can't believe I never came here until today. I shall return for that green mole that had a richness and complex depth of flavor! The tinga tostada was smoky and went well on top a perfectly crisp tostada. The Rajas and crema taco was sumptuous and tasty with the hand made tortillas. Yum !

We happen to see that this restaurant was Michelin recommended so decided to give it a try. Service is good but the food itself is not quite prepared in a manner compared to food I've have in SoCal and Mexico. We got the Mole con Pollo and the Costillas de Puerco en Salsa Verde con Nopales. The red mole was much too sweet. The pork of the Costillas was a bit tough. Drinks-wise, we got the michelada which was quite bland compared to most places. The food isn't bad by any means, but I'm not sure I would be raring to come back.

Mi familia y yo fuismos de visita a San Francisco, estábamos emocionados de probar la comida y cuando le pedí una mesa para 10 se puso de malas y se dio la vuelta ignorándome

Very welcoming service, the bartender had an amazing drink on the menu with pineapple tepache mezcal! I got a tostada de rings I recommend, it was fresh the cream added the perfect touch for the crunch and spice. The sole I ordered had good meat(carnitas) but the masa was more for a tamal which I like but my friends were fond of. Authentic overall good Fideo

Really looking forward to eating here but was very disappointed by the service and high prices. The tortillas are fantastic but the street corn was obviously frozen and served cold. I didn't feel welcome here.

Everything is made from scratch, and proudly served by this family-owned restaurant. Each bite is a wonder of flavors and textures - breakfast, lunch or dinner. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Was recently chosen for New York Times' 25 Best Restaurants to Eat Here Now ... the secret is out!

Very authentic flavorful dishes! Wow what a pleasant surprise. I usually don't expect much from SF Latin food restaurants. They mostly all taste the same. But after eating at El Buen Comer, my wife and I had a slight change of heart! We ordered a michelada, the tacos de rajas con crema, pambazo, and the verde chicken enchiladas. The tacos de rajas were authentic to the T!! Great flavor from the fresh corn tortilla to the grilled onions and rajas! A definite MUST TRY on the menu. The Michelada was on point! Great flavor, not overwhelming with any of the spices. The surprise for us was the PAMBAZO! Wow! Great flavor from the marinated chicken, fresh Queso, and the sauce infused bread! Another must try on the menu. The enchilada was ok, average verde sauce was a bit spicy with too many onions to really enjoy the flavor of the whole enchilada. A little pricey, but we definitely will be coming back to enjoy the great food and possibly try other dishes they offer! One of the better authentic Mexican restaurants in SF city!!

Everything was incredible. Our favorite dishes were the moles (especially the red mole) but it was all delicious. I went to El Buen Comer with my two kids looking for an easy and delicious dinner spot. We got that and more. We got the chips with guacamole and salsa which was great. All of the salsas were flavorful and the guacamole was fresh and limey, exactly how I like it. The chips were also brought to us warm which was a nice touch. Next we got two kinds of mole: the chicken with the red mole and the pork with mole verde. The chicken with red mole's flavor was incredibly deep and the best way that I can think to describe the flavor is warm. The chicken was also perfectly cooked. The pork with mole verde was also great. The pork was cooked to perfection and you still got the taste of the meat with the sauce. We completed the meal with mexican hot chocolate (champurrada) which was so good. Highly recommend.

Quality of ingredients is KEY to what makes this place stand out. By far my favorite Mexican restaurant in SF, even though they serve no burritos.

A few days ago I found this place on Eater and ordered some tamales. The chicken mole tamales are the best I've ever tasted in my life. I went back today for lunch and tried the chicken tinga taco, chorizo y papas taco and carnitas huarache. All jaw-droppingly delicious!! The staff were extremely helpful and warm to us. This restaurant has just become one of my top favorites in SF.
Be the first to ReplyI believe this is the definition of a "hidden gem.
" No reservations ever needed and the best mexican food in town. If you've ever had Pujol's mole, you'll be familiar with El Buen's, full of deep deep flavor (which is true of everything on the menu.)

As a Mexican living in Austin, TX and visiting San Francisco, one of my best friends who lives in the Mision area took me to this small Mexican restaurant, the truth is I was very surprised to find natural guava water, it is not so common at least in Austin to find natural fresh water from this fruit (it's not Spa Water lol), in my case I ordered Pozole Verde which is also not common to find in most Mexican restaurants in the US, so you can imagine how satisfied I was with the food options, the taste is very good with ingredients that are perceived as fresh, with a good portion and affordable price, it is one of the few places that reminds me of small restaurants in Mexico, the place had enough space and the service time was fast and attentive.

Most Americans have not truly experienced this type of authentic Mexican food--unless you have an abuela. I highly recommend El Buen Comer. This is the most authentic Mexican food you will find in SF and many parts of the Bay Area. The prices are higher but you are paying for the quality of eating close to, if not home cooked. You will not experience California Americanized Mexican here-- this is authentic delicious Mexican food!! Having an abuela who taught me how to cook I know!! Isabel and her family have poured their heart into bringing you the true taste of Mexico. When I crave quality home cooked Mexican and I'm too lazy to cook, I go here. During COVID they expanded their take out and added meals such as Barbacoa kit and others.

Their Chile Relleno super burrito is fire. Legit, good prices, delicious food. My go-to taqueria.
Be the first to ReplyThis little restaurant on the fringes of the Mission
This little restaurant on the fringes of the Mission District is run by Isabel Caudillo, a former employee of La Cocina, and the name of the establishment itself promises "good food." Her cuisine is predicated on guisados, the rich stews that are typical of Mexico City, where she was born and raised. Whether you choose for the spicy meatballs in chipotle sauce or the tender pork with green mole, you'll get lots of warm corn tortillas that are handcrafted, so you can use them to soak up every last drop of her scrumptious mixtures. Other traditional Mexican dishes, such as tacos, tortas, and chilaquiles, as well as freshly fried tortilla chips served with a generous helping of zesty guacamole, are included on the menu that has been carefully curated. After you've finished it, wash it down with an ice-cold Mexican Coca-Cola, but don't forget to reserve space for Caudillo's flan; it's one of the city's most delicious interpretations of the dessert.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible food and the staff is so friendly.
The staples- rice and beans and tortillas are always delicious. Love the pork in green sauce and the chicken mole. Also the enchiladas and tamales are excellent. The enchiladas were one of our family's first Covid take out foods and we were so happy when they opened back early in the pandemic. BTW they have a stall at the noe valley farmers market on Saturday's and the food there is also delicious and a great spot for brunch
