not what it used to be, but for once that's not all bad.
if you've been to el quijote a zillion times before to enjoy its inexpensive (and not half bad) lobster or pound their sangria, you will be in for a surprise. whether you take that surprise as pleasantly unexpected or dissapointingly depressing will depend on what kind of person you are. if you're the kind of person who hates to see a landmark restaurant (however unglamorous or 'hip' or 'seedy') re-invented as a 4-star exorbitantly priced 'scene' restaurant, you will likely be disappointed. i'm actually that kind of person, but i have to say, i kind of loved my dinner at el quijote. they've definitely reinvented everything about the joint. starting, especially, with the prices. yeah, it's not expensive even by nyc standards. they changed the space - it's probably about a quarter the size of the previous el quijote. which is fine, as the old space felt cavernous and a bit lonely. mind you, this means you will no longer be able to have conversation with your tablemates at any kind of normal volume. the space now feels comparative cramped, crowded and LOUD. so.... why am i giving it 4 out 5 starts? the food is simply fantastic. this isn't just an improvement on the somewhat pedestrian food the previous kitchen offered. it's a redefinition of what a small hi-end spanish-influenced restaurant can be. just totally flavorful, perfectly prepared and presented. the service is also surprisingly attentive and helpful, especially in light of the fact that this is suddeny a somewhat small, hectic, hipster scene now. no hiccups, all smiles. the space also has been redone, in a somewhat expected design-heavy way. though they've been smart to re-include some of the older wall tapestries, frescos and knick knackery into the redo. yes, it's very loud, and overfilled with beautiful young model-type party-scene lifeforms wearing lanvin and palm angels, so if that kind of situation strikes you as repulsive rather than fun and mildly exciting, it's probably not for you. but the restaurant serves some pretty amazing food, priced appropriately (for once). in fact, the entire hotel renovation had nyc up in arms for a sec, but they really seem to have taken great care with it, including this restaurant and its management. i'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyWhat Happened to the Good Old El Quijote??
Why Did They Ruin It? Pure Profit Motive? El Quijote used to be the best Spanish restaurant in Manhattan...this was before COVID and before they changed management in 2021 or early 2022. My wife and I went back there recently (October 2022) and were bitterly disappointed. The service is friendly and efficient, but the good value is gone with expensive dishes and small portions. My wife and I spent more than $100 for three tapas and 2 glasses of sangria with tip (well-deserved) and tax. The sangria became a watery concoction with too much cinnamon (!) in it. The Gallego Soup, Octopus ร la Gallega and excellent generous paellas in a deep pan are GONE! The best sangria in Manhattan is GONE. Paraphrasing Garcia Lorca: El Quijote, fuรญ para beber tus ojos, tu sangria y ponerme a llorar...(El Quijote, drinking your sangria makes me cry...). Then you cry again when the bill arrives.

I had eaten at the old El Quijote back in the day so was really excited to have them open back up. Itโs about 1/3 of the old space but makes it more warm & cozy, yet still elegant & chic. We got there a bit early to sit at the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The bartender was pleasant, professional, and she made killer drinks. When our table was ready, we were seated at the front booth for just my hubby & I which just had 6ppl sitting there just before us. It was a comfy booth for 2. Our server was also very professional, pleasant, and prompt. We ordered 3 tapas and the paella. All were delicious! I highly recommend this iconic, old world dining experience!
Be the first to ReplyRather disappointing
Four adult family members gathered in NYC from parts of Canada to celebrate a birthday. Having lived in Spain and a previous owner and chef of a restaurant there, I was thoroughly disappointed in El Quixote. The hostess had zero personality and needed an attitude check. The sound level made hearing the waiter difficult. The most disappointing part was the proclaimed paella as a poor example of its namesake. For 72$ USD I did not expect minimal seafood on a minimal bed of overdone rice (mostly burnt on the pan bottom). Lacked real Spanish flair, overly priced for the portions served. The best part was a pre-celebratory cocktail in a classical Spanish lobby bar of the Chelsea Hotel.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, service and great vibe
We enjoyed ever bit of this restaurant experience from the service, to the atmosphere to the food. The Serono Jarmon, ham croquettes, chicken, fish, Basque tort, beautiful and somewhat historic room and bar, and helpful service.
Be the first to ReplyHow dare they use the former name for a substandard, overpriced cheat of a place!
They have the nerve to use the same name for this ripoff of a restaurant. Waaaay overpriced for boring, nouvelle "Spanish" cuisine that bears no resemblance to the great, original, down-home food of the late great El Q. The prices are ridiculous for what you get and the food is terrible with no flavor or quality. Good luck but, no, close it down and bring back the original.
Be the first to ReplyWe were so excited that El Quijote reopened. Well unfortunately that is where the excitement ended.
Donโt go if you think it is like the original. The only thing that is the same is the name. We were so beyond excited that it reopened. We walked in the front bar looked the same. We looked at the menu absolutely NOTHiNG is the same. Pound and a quarter lobsters were 65.00. Food was not good the service was very good and that is the only positive I can write. So so disappointed.

I was in Chelsea and just wanted to see the legendary c Chelsea Hotel, assuming it was still shut. I got there, and it still looked as if it was shut. I pushed the door anyway, and it opened. It was back โ even if only one floor at the moment (definitely worth a visit for the decor and rock n roll/literary history). I asked if there was a bar, and they directed me next door. โ and it was heaven. loved this place. I had one of my happiest nights in New York just sitting at the bar, drinking their fab cocktails and wine, eating their wonderful food and chatting to the amazing bar staff. The sausage and beans dish and hake with garlic chips are spectacular โ yes I did have two meals! But one one was a present! I was there a long time... Best of all was watching the incredibly skilled staff do their ting with the cocktails and chatting away to them. It looks wonderful too, and is full of memories, even if for they are false ones from all the records we've listened to.
Be the first to ReplyPretentious Nonsense in a Nice Atmosphere
Been here many many times before the renovation. Had no expectations for tonightโs was open minded. Service and staff are super cordial and nice. But food and overall experience was just mediocre at best. Atmosphere is only thing going here.

.
Waiting for Don Juan!
I'm going to miss the interior of this place!
Such a great space full of a rich history and tasty delights! the atmosphere is what you are really going for here, with decor and murals dating back to the early part of the 20th century! I know hey have to have a major renovation, but I hope they keeps some of it's original charm intact.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Tapas
El Quijote is a hidden gem. The interior is old world and relaxed and the tapas are amazing! I had scallop, mushroom, chicken and calamari tapas, all of which I would recommend and have again.
Be the first to ReplyFavorite Old NYC Haunt
We went to celebrate a special night in NYC and I can think of no other restaurant Iโd rather do so at. For decades kitschy El Quijote has been serving great food and cocktails with unique old world charm in the heart of Manhattan, at the location of the legendary Chelsea Hotel. Their lobster is to die for, served with salad, sides, and Sangria (by the pitcher please!!) We were there and the news was this jewel of destination dining was to close. I hope if so, itโs only temporary as this is my very favorite vintage restaurant in the city!!!
Be the first to ReplyEat and drink with the legends of the Chelsea Hotel
A favorite watering hole for many of the legendary residents of the Chelsea Hotel, El Quixote still serves great Spanish seafood, including paella and lobsters.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Dinner Place
We had green sauce and garlic sauce dishes that were the best I ever had. Get there quickly because I heard that it is closing soon. Loved it!!
Be the first to ReplyBest shellfish value in New York (and maybe the world)
I'm writing this for Europeans primarily
Consider this : two lobsters, crab, prawns large and small, clams in abundance ,too many mussels to finish and all served in a tasty stock for $86. You would pay twice that, or more, anywhere in Europe. To be sure, American lobsters are not as excellent as those you will find in northern Europe, but they are good. Add a litre of house wine for $20 and you have a feast
Four stars, not five because the fish dishes are not quite so good. They tend to come with sauces which are crude, although the fish itself is good.
Its Hispanic rather than Spanish. Maybe once there was a Spaniard in the kitchen but not now, so do not expect to find what you would in Galicia or Madrid. We ate there twice on this visit to NYC It hasn't changed in three years and I hope that it does not change. But the Chelsea Hotel is being renovated above it and the restaurant has changed ownership, so who knows what the future holds
Go there now before anything changes
