We loved Elephante
Absolutely delicious food and cocktails with beautiful ocean views and a hip island resort feel. We went mid-day on a Saturday and it was packed with a youngish, cool kid LA brunchers crowd. The vibe is lively, but thankfully not too loud or too much of scene. We didn’t have reservations, but were sat at the first-come-first-serve bar after a short wait. If you want a table at any time of day, reservations are a must! This place is busy! The food skews Italian and everything we had was delicious! Grilled octopus was so tender and served over a fresh and flavorful salad. The Rigatoni Verde was a good balance of earthy umami and rich creaminess. For LA, it’s a large pasta portion, but even so we weren’t left feeling like we’d over-carbed. Around us we saw bowl after bowl of their vodka sauce pasta go by so that seems to be a popular choice as well. The Soppressata Pizza was fantastic - a perfectly light, crispy crust with some delicate sour tang. Juuuust enough honey to add a kiss of sweetness without being unctuous. We had ours topped with arugula and that was a great choice in our opinion :) Cocktails are amazing - balanced and layered. Bold Sea Slushie was my favorite Mezcalera - delicious! Acqua - good Margarita - classic and good Many people around us were ordering the Watermelon Mezcalrita and loving it, so we’ll have to try it next time. All in all an excellent spot to hit in Santa Monica with lots of energy.
Be the first to ReplyDate Night!
Last night my lady and I dined at Elephante - great cocktails, vibes/ambiance, would highly recommend ordering the whipped eggplant, vodka sauce pasta and soppressata pizza. Seems like the ideal place to visit if you're traveling to LA, have a special someone you want to take out for a nice date or perhaps a client/colleague dinner. Special shoutout to Cameron who was at the host stand; we were originally sat outside on the balcony, it was a bit chilly ~50 degrees and with a breeze. She brought us two blankets, but in addition to that, about 5 minutes later, came back to let us know that a table for two opened up inside the cactus garden and gave us the option to switch - which we absolutely preferred/appreciated. At restaurants and dining out, of course, food/drinks/ambiance is always important, but what I always seem to remember most are the people & Cameron was a bright star. Thank you!

I really enjoyed my visit here. I came here in the afternoon for drinks. The entire vibe of this place is completely my style. When I sat down I saw a big puffy bread that looked interesting and I had to try it out. I had a Violet Curtain and it was delicious. The whipped egg plant is like hummus and the puffy bread is puccia. So good and so different and definitely worth a try. The service was great and I will definitely be back here.
Be the first to ReplyÉlephante is AMAZING!
Positioned beautifully beachside and overlooking the Santa Monica Beach, Élephante is geographically positioned for success. The entry is street side, a little mysterious and could be more impressive. Valet is available. HOWEVER, once you arrive to the third floor, you are greeted with friendly staff and a chill, luxurious atmosphere. Food is excellent, service is excellent and views are stellar. Absolutely no negatives here, make a reservation early and enjoy. This is a restaurant not to miss if visiting Santa Monica.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience
The food, view, ambience, service, all were outstanding. The pizzas we had were great, but what stole the show for be was the unique chilli oil that they gave us as a condiment to the pizza. Wow!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed before we even walked in
As we stepped up to the podium to check in, the gigantic bouncer moved quickly to block the entrance like he thought this tiny grandmother was going to rush him. Service was perfunctory. Flavors lacked balance in terms of salt and acidity. Express lunch decent value. Super noisy with bros to our left one-upping each other and young women on our right screeching to be heard. Didn’t get the combo of a French name, Safari decor, and Italian food. Lovely view.
Be the first to ReplyWorst service, not worth it
Obnoxious people working there, horrible service. Not worth it at all. The view is fantastic but the service is horrible, people working there are very obnoxious and couldn’t care less. I put one star for the view and location but don’t recommend it. Avoid it!!
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening out!
We had a fab evening here, got there just after sunset but could tell it was the perfect place for sunset dinner and drinks. Decor was lovely, good vibe and friendly waiter at the table. Food was lovely the eggplant dip with pizza was amazing, so was the crumbed veal and the pavlova is a must try (but definitely to share). Only thing that could have been improved it was slightly too dark at our table but others where brighter. Would recommend!
Be the first to ReplyA great night out
We managed to get a table for 4 at 8pm without making a reservation, we were lucky as the place was very busy. Great vibe, service and food. Our best dining experience in SM. Would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyMarvelous
Extraordinary place, the restaurant located in the 3rd floor overlooking the ocean, huge and specious, it seems very popular among California's and tourists. We had an early dinner today and It was stunning, the food is do perfect and tasty than so many restaurants of this sort, I concatenate the owners for the chef they have. The service was so professional, who attended our table was so perfect I could name him an angel. Fair prices comparing to the quality of food and portion serviced. Don't miss it Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyQuick hands with your bill
A restaurant that doesnt care for its customers. As soon as you order something they ask you for your card to open a tab and they charge you inmediatly. When you ask for the check they charge you again for the first thing you ordered. We paid in cash our whole bill and they charge us double a bottle of prosseco. Whe sent them the card statement and they aduce the charge was never made. Be careful with your bill in this place you might loose some money by being double charged.
Be the first to ReplyGreat view and Great food in Santa Monica
The restaurant is located on the rooftop so the view is great. It is an open air restaurant. Very chic and nice interiors. I get the Asian tropical vibe. We arrived at 5pm and it was already full. Lucky we had reservations. Service is ok, not spectacular since the servers seemed pretty busy. The food was really good though. We ordered the: Margherita Pizza - House-made mozzarella, tomato, basil Rigatoni Verde Pasta- Mushroom ragu, mascarpone, chive Gemelli Pasta - Squid ink pasta, dungeness crab, tomato butter, chili Vodka Sauce pasta - Canestri pasta, calabrian chili, basil, parmigiano Fish dish – I forgot what it was but it was good too. Chocolate Torta - Salted caramel, mascarpone Ordered some cocktails too which were also good. They were ALL DELICIOUS. Large portions too so the pastas can be shared. The place seems like a hangout/bar after dinner since they kinda dim the lights and change the music. Great vibe to grab a drink too. But for lunch and drink, you can bring the kids too. This is a great find in Santa Monica. Definitely must dine here.
Be the first to ReplyA Santa Monica must
There is a reason it’s hard to make reservations here. The ambiance, the staff and the food are outstanding. We came for brunch and an absolute must is their banana bread. Gooey inside, crispy and buttery on the outside. But regardless of the time of day you go, make sure you order their whipped eggplant with a side of their chili oil (you need to ask for their oil )- heavenly. The taste of eggplant is so subtle and creamy it’s exquisite. And their bread! It wont disappoint. Highly recommend. And their staff is so attentive. Nick was amazing!
Be the first to ReplyStyle over substance
We have just had the misfortune to eat here tonight. Tables are far too close to each other which makes it impossible not to interact with your neighbours. If it wasn’t for the fact that they take credit card details in advance and could charge $50 we would have left. Food is mediocre, overpriced and mine was only luke warm. The only highlight was the exceptional service from the lady who looked after us. The person who bought the food clearly needs additional training as mine was slid across the table and the spoon ended up with the handle in the food. Would we return? Definitely not.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food and fun
Super views from this packed to the rafters “IN” place. Why? Views straight out to the beach. Excellent service. Delicious delicious food. The truffle pasta, well, it was just the most delightful thing. And such an eclectic, fun crowd. Everything was really good, and I would urge anyone to visit. A real MUST DO in Santa Monica. Thankyou
Be the first to ReplyWell worth a visit
Lovely setting, mixed crowd and very good service. The food was good, seafood probably the best option. Gluten free options available if you ask. Upscale place for lunch or dinner, open to the elements so dress warm on spring or fall evenings. Do make a reservation and watch out for their policy of charging you for a no show.
Be the first to ReplyNice setting wonderful service
Such a nice service and the setting is really super with different areas for different “moods”.
Our table was just on the edge of the terrace with wonderful views of the ocean.
The food was good (the Italian-Mediterranean influence) but I think that people gather here mainly to see and be seen…
Place to be seen
If you haven’t searched this place you wouldn’t know it was there. Just a doorway on the street. We managed to get a walk in and within 5 minutes got 2 seats at the counter. Superb venue for lunch overlooking the sea. Definitely a destination venue. Casual smart beach dress code. Big open patio overlooking the sea. Super venue.
Food menu not massive but good quality. We ordered octopus salad and pizza. Both very good.
I’d say it’s Mediterranean with Italian leanings.
Good service.
There is another seating area at the rear which didn’t feel as special. Definitely go for the front patio or counter.
Nice atmosphere and tasty food
The place is located in a good location with a nice view and it has a nice atmosphere.
The eggplant dip and Puccia bread were good. Especially the bread.
The broccolini was good and filling.
The brussels sprouts salad was ok but seemed too dry therefore difficult to go through the whole bowl.
Good meal overall.
The food could be better
Great location, friendly and attentive service but the food is pretty basic.
Better during daytime to enjoy the sight
Super Cool Spot with Amazing Vibes
Been here twice now, once on a random visit while in Santa Monica for other reasons (NEW PHONE!) and with no booking, thought we'd try our luck and managed to get a seat at the bar straight away! Elevator up to the rooftop, and you're transported into a chic, vacation vibes atmosphere, everyone chilling out at their tables and having an awesome time. Even though we were at the bar, we totally got lost in the ambience and the Old Fashioneds, and had an amazing time. The second time we booked for dinner with a friend and had amazing seating on the balcony - definitely recommend booking ahead.
We have tried the Whipped Eggplant, Diver Scallops, Truffle Pasta, Lobster Pasta, and Tiramisu. For drinks, Old Fashioned, Social Butterfly, Japanese Penicillin and Revival.
Whipped Eggplant ($15) - A must-do, pita fresh out the oven and pure bread heaven.
Diver Scallops ($34) - Subtle flavors of citrus, caviar and chives. Scallops have been consistently cooked well with perfect texture on both occasions.
Truffle Pasta ($52) - It was good and creamy but not as amazing as I wanted it to be.
Lobster Pasta ($49) - Lobster pasta was pretty tasty and had good quantity of lobster. Actually couldn't finish it and it was even better the next day.
Tiramisu ($12)
Drinks - The Old Fashioned ($18) is pretty good here as well as their gin cocktail the Social Butterfly ($17). Didn't really care for the Japanese Penicillin ($18) or Revival ($17).
Quantity 4/5 - Decent portion sizes, apart from the scallops.
Ambience 5/5 - Ambience is amazing here. Really nice vibe and good views if you're seated out on the balcony.
Service 4/5 - Our server was friendly and helpful.
Taste - 4/5 - Food is tasty - especially the whipped eggplant appetizer.
Some Tips:
- Recommend the Whipped Eggplant, Truffle Pasta and Lobster Pasta. Old Fashioned and Social Butterfly for drinks.
- Great for a date day/night, groups, catch-up with friends, special occasions or anything really, this is an awesome space with fun ambience!
- Smart-Casual or Dressed up - your pick
- Book in advance through Resy - Sunset Room is overlooking the ocean views and the Cactus Room is an outdoor patio at the back and a little more quiet
- Valet $20 or plenty of garage parking nearby
Before I came here I had bookmarked this place a while back, and just thought it was hype - but it's not, I get it now lol. I absolutely love this place and I recommend booking and request for the Sunset Room, and have a balcony seat overlooking the Pacific. Fun Fact - It's owned by an Aussie! Looks like there's a lot of down under here in LA, such as myself - although I'm from the real down under (NZ represent!). Looking forward to many more visits at this place!
Rooftop Paradise in Santa Monica
Phenomenal ambiance, delectable cuisine, and unparalleled service. Thank you to the hostess, Nicole, our server, Michaela, and the manager, Earl, for incredible service! Visit this restaurant and you will not be disappointed
Be the first to ReplyA place to be seen
Visited Here with friends to celebrate a birthday. It’s one of those huge LA restaurants where it’s key objective is to be the place to be. It is dark, loud with a lot of energy and quite a scene even early in the evening. The menu is more sharing plates than it makes out but the food and service was surprisingly good. The whipped eggplant came with the most amazing bread and the pizza I had was genuine thin crust Italian style. It’s on the top floor of a building and makes a lot of the ocean view but after sunset all you can see are a few palm trees Ocean Avenue
Be the first to ReplyVery hip, very smart, very good!
Amazingly cool vibe, amazingly good food (Mediterranean Italian), and amazingly great ambiance. Views of the ocean are amazing, and the staff was truly attentive to our needs, and didn’t have to be waved at for support. Great place, great people…highly recommended!!
Be the first to ReplyA sheer delight
The experience was a highlight of our trip. OK, I admit that we were very very lucky to score a table on the outside terrace for lunch on a perfect fall day. It is on the third floor of an office building so you see the beach and the water, not just people walking by on the sidewalk. We both had the benedict with smoked salmon, and the quality was superb. The smoked salmon was Nova style and ranked with what you would find on the upper west side in Manhattan. Good bloody mary. We enjoyed the scene so much that we were not upset that our server was not especially attentive, since it gave us more time on the terrace. If we had been inside our reaction might have been less enthusiastic.
