Disappointing…
Came with high expectations. Our son picked the place. The first welcome was “you have 2 hours must leave by…”, a bit odd having heard this on the phone twice. Anyway… The food was ok, the starters passable, the sea bream the tiniest of portions. The fish cake looked good as did the roast beef. The deserts disappointing. The service was ok. The manager aloof, no eye contact, let alone welcoming - not… It is around £75 per head. The room is lovely and bright. It was full on a Sunday lunchtime. I suspect because it has a Michelin star, which it will lose for sure if they don’t get to grips and sort themselves out - good luck.

For the better half’s birthday we went for the 6 course tasting lunch with matching wine, yes very indulgent, yum. Having been a couple of times we know the superb cooking of the chef and this proved again how good Phil Howard and his team are. Without running through all of the dishes my stand out courses were the first stater of mackerel with beetroot, what a way to start 10/10. The Hiroshima saki was for me the best food/wine combo of the lot. The cauliflower with mushrooms was as good and for a confirmed meat/fish eater I would choose this dish over the non-veg options any day. The matching wines were good although I did not think the Chardonnay went with the cauliflower dish very well (what do I know? it’s just my opinion). Pasta and rabbit very good, sea bass was ok but too garlicky for my palate, but my partner loved it, pork cheeks delightfully sticky and gelatinous, and the wines with these all good. The dessert of cheesecake and rhubarb ripple ice cream was pure heaven, myself and the mrs both said we could have eaten another, even though we were both Phil (sorry, full). This was not a cheap eat but you don’t go to restaurants like this for a snack, I have given 5 marks even though there were a couple of courses not really to my liking but this goes to show how good the others were for me. I just cannot fault the cooking and would recommend you try this restaurant, I think it’s underrated or at least under the radar a bit, but that’s great - makes getting a table easier!

Roll over, then click to rateVery Good Title of your review An almost entirely delicious and excellent value meal. Your review Tips for writing a great review Three of our party of 4 opted for the 3 course menu, which at £39.50 was excellent value. One of our party, due to dodgy stomach, opted to have 1 course (sea bass £40) off the main a la carte menu. The food was nearly all delicious and they catered very well for my husband’s gluten free diet. The only dish, chosen by me, which was a disappointment, was the rhubarb (far too sweet for my taste) and I didn’t like the beignets, which accompanied it. The mandarin water ices were I understand excellent. The bread was a little dull , but my husband enjoyed his gluten free bread. We enjoyed everything else. The portions were pretty small, but more than enough for our modest appetites. The service was friendly, but on the slow side. We had allowed 2 hours for a meal, with a booking at the V&A and became anxious, when the main courses were slow to appear. However, when we explained the position they willingly made sure we left in good time

Having had a number of pleasurable dining experiences at sister restaurant Church Road in Barnes we had high hopes (particularly given the noticeably higher prices). Unfortunately those expectations were not met. Service was poor. At one point I had to gesticulate exasperatedly to get the waiters to remove our plates that had sat untouched for 20 minutes! When we left no one offered to retrieve our coats meaning we had to locate them ourselves in a cupboard. The food was unmemorable and my soufflé had spent some time out of the oven. My advice; travel a few miles west to Barnes

A catch up with friends on a Monday evening. We let the sommelier choose our wine - it was a little abstract but completely delicious; he clearly knows what he's talking about and picked a hidden gem. The service was warm and personal, not not too obtrusive. The food was cooked, seasoned and presented beautifully. The bill was exactly what we were expecting. This is a great restaurant, and I'm glad we chose it.

I had the set lunch which is great value for just under £40 for 3 courses. The food was very tasty and it was just a lovely place to be, really welcoming so I’d recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly. Our lunch was a mix of friendship and business

Had an outstanding meal here, each course superb. Wanting to keep it light, I opted for the set 3 course lunch priced at £39.50, excellent value given the quality. Every dish was packed with flavour, as well as being beautifully presented (though not artistically overworked). It’s a well established operation, with the cooking too good to need much flash or flourish. Service was spot on - polished & informed but down to earth & friendly, the environment well heeled but easy going. The wine list is upscale but not over priced, same with regards to cocktails……& the best Pisco Sour I’ve ever had! In fact, this was the best meal I’ve had in a long time.

Wonderful four course meal with delicious food and great service. Excellent wine list. There was great attention to detail and courses arrived in perfect time with a small rest in between. I was surprised that there were tables available as we reserved a few weeks in advance. Also in a convenient London location.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent lunch.
Four of us for lunch, Thursday 22nd December. We opted for the set lunch menu. We had the celeriac soup with partridge sausage roll, the beetroot cured halibut and the cashew nut humus to start with. All excellent. For mains we had the pollock and venison. Both excellent. Xmas pudding and trifle for dessert. The sourdough bread was very good and we were offered lots of it. A good wine list. The employees were very attentive and pleasant.

We recently visited Elystan Street for dinner. We were looking forward to an evening out with friends, but sadly we were underwhelmed. From our arrival until we received our starter took one hour, the restaurant was not warm, the toilets were glacial and the service quite impersonal. No Michelin restaurant is cheap, however it is quite rare to leave a restaurant and not actually feel that full. Having eaten the starter and main course we resisted the very unexciting looking desserts at £16 each. The flavours of our meals were good but the portion sizes were not that generous whilst the prices were high. It is also unusual to not have any amuse bouche at a restaurant of this standard. We were only served one portion of bread! There was no "warmth" shown at all from the servers & the employee handing out the coats on leaving showed no interest whatsoever in how we had enjoyed our evening. Having been lucky enough to eat in many Michelin starred restaurants, this was certainly not one of the best or even close. We won't be returning, there are far better restaurants with better ambiance, food and service. Great shame!

A pleasant Friday night dinner in a lovely restaurant. Friendly staff. Excellent Brill main course. Delicious desert lemon tart. Small confusion with the wine order
Be the first to ReplyTop notch cuisine indeed-but service well below par for a Michelin star restaurant.
My wife and I had booked to have Sunday lunch at this restaurant in order that we might celebrate together three months having passed since we wed in April of this year. We were eagerly looking forward to sampling the set Sunday lunch menu-having come across it on the restaurant's website. Imagine our surprise however when we entered the restaurant only to be met by a young lady who, although very well-presented and attractive, seemed to have difficulty stringing two words of English together. I gave her our surname and informed her of our reservation. This drew a blank face in response. Rather than replying to us directly she simply turned her back on us and a few moments later returned with a colleague/supervisor who was fortunately able to take over and direct us towards our table. Once we had been seated for about five or ten minutes a waiter eventually appeared at our table with a couple of menus. His attitude was not particularly welcoming-as if to say "what are you two doing here? The sooner you are both out of here the better". He really did not seem pleased to see us at all. Had we said or done something to upset him? However in spite of this seeming reluctance to engage he nevertheless proceeded to take our orders. As a starter I opted for the beetroot with the mackerel rillettes while my wife chose the courgette salad with ricotta cheese. These dishes when they arrived were both excellent we agreed. My only gripe was that there was not more mackerel on the plate! I accompanied my starter with a nice glass of French cote de provence Rose wine which went down very well. Next came the mains: roast beef with roast potatoes and Yorskhire pudding for me and sea bream with vegetables for my wife. Both dishes definitely worth waiting for in terms of quality and presentation. Fine ingredients all expertly cooked. My beef had a perfect flavour and texture and the roast potatoes were all crispy and salty as they should be. My wife assured me that her fish was perhaps the best she had ever had in any restaurant anywhere. But why serve both main courses in bowls instead of on plates? Also the waiting time between the starters and the mains was way too long in our opinion. Food impossible to criticise-but service questionable in just about every way. I went to use the facilities while waiting for the main courses to arrive and not only was there water on the floor of the gents-but it was clear that the urinals had not been flushed through for some time. The basket containing the used hand towels was also overflowing-with some of them on the floor. My wife also said that the ladies room left a number of things to be desired. Once the mains had been finished and our dessert orders taken (raspberry millefeuille for me and sorbet for my wife) I asked for the waiter to bring me a black coffee at the same time as the desserts. This instruction seemed to bypass him completely since not only did the desserts take about 15-20 minutes to arrive but the coffee arrived 10-15 minutes after the desserts. In all the meal took almost two and half hours which is way too long to spend in a restaurant. The desserts were both delicious like every dish which came before them. But the simple fact remains-the 15% service charge turned out to be totally unjustifiable on the day. Thank heavens my wife and I were not Michelin guide insoectors in disguise-otherwise the star rating might have been in jeopardy based on the level of service received alone. I have given 4 for food but please read 4.5.

Food, service, price all excellent! The dressing did wonders bringing out the sweetness of the tomatoes. The cheese soufflé simple to die for.
Be the first to ReplyTh good did not justify the price - service was fine.
Did not start well when we were served stale bread. Not wowed by the food. Courgette flower was bland and could barely taste the lobster. The lamb was a little tough. The only sublime experience was the lemon tart.
Be the first to ReplyHmmmm, delicious food but very expensive and rubbish service.
Hmmmm……the food is delicious, no complaints, although the portions were meagre. Not a problem for me but maybe for our guests. However the service was rubbish. We had booked for 7.30 and arrived promptly. We left at 11pm. The wait between first and second courses was about 40 mins and the bill was £540 for four. The wine we ordered - a Crozes-Hermitage - wasn’t available and our second choice of a Gigondas although very good, turned out to be single bottle. Not acceptable, they should have told us that when we ordered. Disappointing.

Amazing meal, the cool almond soup was amazing, bursting with flavour and nice contrast of crunchy almonds. The strozzapetti was very buttery, could have easily eaten another portion. Wasn't sure what coastal vegetables (contained peas) were with the Cornish bass but nevertheless was tasty. The lamb was so tender and the jus complemented it well. Dessert was superb packed with flavour and different textures.
Be the first to ReplyWedding Anniversary Lunch
We dined here for a special anniversary lunch and while the food was really delicious it has to be said that the service was sadly lacking. We had to ask for our wine glasses to be refilled from the cooler and when we ordered a couple of glasses of red to have with our cheese they never arrived. At the end of our meal we asked if we had any of our white wine left in the cooler (which was placed away from our table) because it seemed as though it must be finished as it wasn't forthcoming. Turns out there were at least 2 glasses left, I feel if we hadn't asked our waiter to check those drinks would have remained there thus wasting our money. When my husband mentioned "wine-gate" politely to our waiter, he just said "Yep" never apologised at all. He did knock off the service charge from our bill but why the attitude and lack of apology? Mistakes happen, no problem with that but just be courteous please and be gracious when customers bring them to your attention. Annie Tosh

Absolutely loved having our anniversary dinner here. Everything was perfect. As expected. - 1 of the world’s 50 best restaurants - They serve British & Modern European cuisine - 1 Michelin Star - Elegant Interiors and we had nice booth seats - Quality British ingredients, with focus on the simple ingredients but banging with flavour - who knew that simple ingredients could taste so good… - Charismatic staff & Warm hospitality - Everyone was so friendly and hospitable - Comfort food in a humble setting - From Square Meal: 1 of London’s top 100 restaurants - From Michelin Guide’s review: One MICHELIN Star: High quality cooking, worth a stop! Absolutely loved it and would definitely go back

We enjoyed the six course tasting menu with the wine pairings and everything we delicious! Cooke to perfection and the wait staff was engaged, friendly and quite knowledgeable. This is definitely one of the finest restaurants we have ever dined in. Certainly a must if in London!

Starter : vegetable medley with truffle- 4/10 very average, over complicated and confused, strange complications and questionable presentation Main: Langoustine- 6/10 ok, meat was cooked to perfection but again rather confused flavours and average presentation Dessert: milk many ways- 9/10 fantastic great verity of flavours and textures and a well presented dish All good was extremely rich and heavy, lots of cream and butter, too much so for my liking. Very hard to find anything “light” Overall service and ambience - 8/10 busy restaurant friendly team however didn’t explain dishes or wine whatsoever. My guest ordered the asparagus soup with cheese crisps and three dips. These dips were neither described by the menu or the waiter, leaving a guessing game to unfold. Ridel glassware always a big tick. Unpretentious and relaxed style very much my taste but felt the food, presentation and execution left much to be desired. Value for money rating: 6/10 Worked out roughy £130 per head (with two bottles of wine between 4) Enjoyed but won’t be returning or recommending

Excellent food with friendly staff. I went for the roast beef and it was cooked to perfection. Looking forward to coming back!!
Be the first to ReplyA bit disappointing......
Had lunch here recently. Food good but not exceptional. Main problem is the poor and inattentive service with excessive delays between courses. Probably would ñot visit again sadly.
Be the first to ReplyLovely lunch
Very nice lunch, had meal deal which included a very nice starter - chicken salad, calf liver for mains and a tiramisu dessert 🤩
Be the first to ReplyLovely food, but very poor service and slow
The restaurant is very beautifully decorated, and the menu very appealing. The food that we got was delicious and the wine pairing was very complimentary. However the problem was with the service and how long our meal took.
We had called in advance to ask about how long the meal would take (to book a taxi home after) and we’re told 2.5 hours. We therefore booked a taxi for 3 hours after our booking, and despite that, 3 hours in we were only 4/6 courses in. Our 5th course took over 45 minutes to come out and we didn’t get our desert before having to leave (as the taxi had been outside for 45 minutes). Almost more annoyingly than the slow food, was the waiting staffs approach to dealing with it. They didn’t communicate with us at all and in fact actively avoided us after we asked questions about where our food was. They didn’t seem to take our concerns or questions seriously at all, and that is a completely unacceptable level of service for a restaurant of this supposed quality. I would certainly not say it was deserving of a Michelin star based on our experience.
Just amazing food and staff
I had the £35 3-course lunch menu today and what a treat it was. When I asked about ciders they said sorry but we have 3 types of beer and we'll give you a small pot of rhubarb syrup to try and what a revelation that was .. fantastic. Crusty super-fresh bread and a decent dollop of butter .. marinated halibut (so pretty, see the photos), followed by pollock with a wonderful side salad and finished with a mousse with freshly (and I mean still warm) beignet. Impeccable service and a real delight, I'll be back a lot.
