Fabulous dining experience! We were a big party (11 people) but the service was great. Joe and the entire staff made us feel right at home! We were not rushed but didn't wait for anything. The food was outstanding! Will definitely be back even though it's quite a drive from my house.

I've been hearing about this quaint idea for years - i think of my own relatives who can produce in huge capacity their native recipes better than any of us can, what's not to like? idea, i think, is that there's an italian grandma and a rotation of grandmothers of different nationalities. but in practice there was nothing visibly cooking though supposedly the japanese grandmother was cooking downstairs. the puerto rican grandma was just sitting texting all the time - we had to wait for our table and she was just texting, texting, texting, totally oblivious. the other grandma, italian, i think, was making rounds and greeting people as though she was a star. before i exhaust my negativity i'll just say though that the japanese eggplant was beautiful and tasty. and i nod to all the great reviews - obviously they experienced something beyond my own. we didn't order puerto rican on principal because that grandma was still just sitting there disinterestedly texting, besides, no cooking was apparent. the menu was not interesting so we ordered what seemed safe, the japanese eggplant and the white lasagna. the waitresses were really annoying - just order a glass of wine and they'll tell you what a great choice it is! the "fall salad" had apples on it and was really blah. it was either that or the fresh tomato salad (in March) and seeing that at the next table justified my not ordering March tomatoes. I just extracted the pasta from the white lasagna - and left the rest over. Yes, the Italian grandma came to see us as though she was divine and asked us to clink our wine glasses which we did to get her to leave us alone. the noise was terrible. i know this place has a reputation which is why it is expensive, but the owner is right there, doesn't he have some say about making the place a bit more refined? good news and bad news - i finally got there, and wish i hadn't.

The staff and service are five star you can't miss if you make a reservation here.

The 4 stars are for Joe, Paola, the Italian and Turkish Nonnas and the rest of the staff. Where the food lacks, they make up for it in spades. The Armenian red is a nice inexpensive bottle. Between the three of us, we had the meat lasagna, the Turkish eggplant and keftas. I personally didn't like the lasagna. It actually had big chunks of hard boiled eggs. The best dish by far was the eggplant. I left underwhelmed by the food but extremely impressed with the concept and staff.

I love that this place is run by grandmas from all over the world! So fun that the menu rotates between foods of different countries. My favorite dish is the white lasagna!! I also love the filo pastry Greek appetizer and the pork. I've been here a few times and the grandmas are so sweet
Be the first to ReplyWorst experience I've ever had for dinning.
Clearly double standard of service as we are the only table of Asian in the resultant. The server is not giving us water, not taking our order, not asking how the food was, ignore me for at least three times when ask for box/check, no smile at all when talking. Plus they don't accept credit card, only venmo and cash. Yet the venom is not working. The food was strong in taste and a bit overpriced, idk why people keep sucking there ass, clearly not worth it.
Be the first to ReplyI'd give it 2.
5 stars. First off, I'll say this place is mostly a gimmick. The food tastes like what you get at other restaurants and doesn't remind me of grandma's cooking. Had several dishes which were mostly underwhelming. The prices also were way too high. $16 for a mediocre, dry piece of cheesecake, yeah sure ok.

It's such a cute idea nonna's around the world cooking! Nonna Maria was walking around talking to every table. She was very sweet and kind. We went the night an Armenian Nonna cooked. We got some pan friend chicken with rice and tried their Italian menu, porchetta. I'm giving this place 5 stars for the service and ambiance. The food is 4 /5. The chicken wasn't dry but I wish it had more flavor. It just tasted like pan fried chicken. The porchetta wasn't too bad. The skin was so crispy! The pork was soft and very fatty. I didn't get much flavor out of it either. I'd come back and give it another try.

If you are going to have food at one restaurant in NYC I will venture to say that this should be the one. And yes it is in Staten Island. It is conveniently located a walkable distance across (a short five minute or so) from the St. George's ferry. Founded by an Italian American who's Nonna (grandma) is the magical cook that can whip up heartwarming fresh dishes from her Naples childhood is the star of the show. However, they have a unique set up where they would have Nonna's from all over the world (such as Palestine, Egypt, Ukraine, Japan) take over the second kitchen and create dishes and food from their childhood from where they grew up. A unique and powerful idea. I have tried the Colombian, Italian and Egyptian Nonna's food and also the Turkish Nonna's food as well. On my latest visit I tried the Harvest salad which has peaches and apples sliced with cheese and greens and warm walnuts sprinkled on top. Fresh and refreshing, just like the Mozzarella and tomato salad. However the most unique dish I tried on my last visit was the Lasagna Bianca which is a vegetarian lasagna and the most unique concoction of tastes I have tasted in Italian cooking. The layers of organic pasta with mozzarella, ricotta and a medley of seasoned sauteed vegetables in a creamy bechemel sauce. Also tried the Linguini Aglio e Olio which is the simplest of combination of garlic, linguini, olive oil and love, sprinkled with red pepper flakes. The Turkish Nonna makes the best Kofte you will ever taste in your life. These are rounded patties of ground beef seasoned with inions, fresh herbs, then pan fried and served with rice and a side salad (see pictures)Try if for the food and you will remember your grandma's cooking and if you never had your grandma's cooking then all the more reason to visit!

After the NY Times, Sporkful, and national press starting raving in 2017, it was on our list. But 2 years of closure. What better than cooking from Italian and other nationality grandmas??We took the 30-minute Uber from LES to somewhere in Staten Island. Cozy and friendly would be the first descriptors. Add packed - so reserve. The menu always has Italian dishes and then meals made by rotating grandmas from other countries. Ours was Turkish although there were 2 Jamaican dishes. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees. Most were excellent but I must confess the lasagna was my favorite. One of the Turkish appetizers tested your "hot" tolerance. Further, some of the dishes were enormous - as the rabbit. So order fewer appetizers or plan on taking much home.It was a veery fun and memorable evening. BTW - they have a large wine list - many countries - and don't think any were priced above $40.Damages for 4 with tip was $300.

This is one of those institutions that you have to go to if you live on Staten Island. From the moment you walk in the customer service is incredible, from the owner/founder to the waitstaff to the grandmas of course. The Italian food is absolutely to die for. The lasagna in particular knocked our socks off.The Egyptian seafood stew was pretty good, and the Japanese desserts - wow!Go!

Best meal I've had in a long time!!We were visiting a college that my daughter is considering for next year. I had done some research and decided that I wanted to give the nonnas a try. So glad we did!Had homemade bread, meatballs, stuffed spicy peppers, a sausage & potatoes special, the rabbit entree, plus dessert for everyone! Immediately ordered the cookbook when we got back to the hotel. Not only was the food great, but the service was amazing!! From Nonna herself to the owner to the best waitress ever...we met them all. Paola was our waitress and has become a bit of a legend in our family. Thank you everyone for a lovely dinner!
Be the first to ReplyI love this place! It's a great and unique concept.
The night we went there was an Italian grandmother and she made the best ragu sauce ever. Everything is fresh and this place is very intimate. Great for date night!!
Be the first to ReplyFantasic and original menu.
A small place, cash only, reservations can only be made reliably by phone, but I love this place. Despite a few limitations I can't recommend them enough. I have eaten there twice. I would eat there more often but I don't live on Staten Island, and sometimes it can be hard to get a reservation. This food is authentic. The staff is very friendly and professional. Give it a try.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and a true dining experience.
The staff was amazing and worked hard to take care of our large group. Food was delicious and well priced. White lasagna a must!!!
Be the first to ReplyWent there several years ago and still tell the story.
I ordered Zappa do Pesce and standard price just under $30. When this baby plate showed up to the table I Laughed. 2 fork fulls of pasta 1 shrimp and 2 rings of calamari. No way would a grandmother serve this size portion as an Entree!

Brought my italian grandma here and it got her seal of approval. That's all that needs to be said let's be honest XD. Great food AND great and friendly service. We had the pleasure of tasting Maria from Lombardy's homemade cavatelli, stuffed calamari and zucchini parm all of which were absolutely delicious. I have never had such tender calamari. Also one of the only meatballs I've enjoyed while dining out. That's a sure sign of quality Italian food! ย I will definitely be frequenting this place from now on.

Oh my god this place is great! I came visiting from Seattle and "driving by" the Statue of Liberty via Staten Island was in the NY itinerary. I heard about this place & popped in to see if they were open and they were. ย The lasagna with red sauce was DELICIOUS that I finished the entire plate in a few minutes. The salted caramel gelato was mad scrumptious. I'm not sure what consisted of the whipped cream but I could've eaten a bowl of that by itself. Plus I came dining alone and ate outside and the waitresses and owner came to check on me consistently. A sweet Nonna also came to greet me, bus my table, and see how I was doing. I would definitely come back just for the service alone. I felt taken care of and it was the best way to end my trip to NY. 10/10 will be back with friends!
