Estela New York Reviews from The Last Year
Estela is probably my favorite "format" restaurant.
I feel like their format was more prevalent in the aughts. But I am SO grateful that they have stuck to it. You arrive with your party and they provide you a menu with a listing of items from lightest to heaviest (as in oysters at the top and duck breast or wagyu steak at the bottom). If you arrive with two people, they recommend four to six dishes, with a party of four, maybe eight to nine dishes. Keep in mind, each dish is meant to be shared and is timed perfectly to be delivered one at a time with careful attention paid to when your table appears ready for the next dish. THIS is the feature that makes the meal a great place to meet a friend to catch up over a bottle of wine and a wind range of delicious tastes to both indulge in and discuss (if you're into that). I have been going for years, typically with only one other person. However, for my birthday this year, my 10 and 12 year old kids asked that I take them to my "favorite restaurant that I always go to with my friends". I believed they were ready, and they WERE. They were so excited to try this "legendary" place that I always left them home to go to. The menu often changes but the two main stays that never seem to change are the beef tartare with crispy sunchokes and the endive leaves, drizzled with olive oil and served with finely chopped candied walnuts, anchovies and "ubriaco rosso" cheese (basically a pecorino romano aged in wine) -- my FAVORITE thing on the menu. There is a reason the two dishes mentioned above are mainstays. They are the best, in my opinion. I have never had a bad dish at Estela. We always get the oysters of the moment, usually ricotta gnocchi in a mushroom broth perfection. As far as the proteins go, those seem to change the most often. Last night we had the Mackeral with seaweed, favas and avocado the the wagyu with brussle sprouts and tallegio. Everything was excellent. I stand by my original assessment that the best way to enjoy this restaurant is with one of your best friends to share a bottle of wine as they deliver one small plate at a time. The format is perfection for that particular scenario, though my kids did rave about the beef tartare, the endive and the wagyu. Love You, Estela.

always a favorite! endive salad, dumplings and arroz are classics but has the duck this time and it was one of the best best duck dishes i've had. so good will always come back when here
10 out of 10.
The food, service, and ambiance were all spot on. Everything pictured below was amazing. We also had, not pictured, the Ricotta dumplings with mushrooms and pecorino Sardo which were one of my favorites. The Endive salad was my number 1 favorite dish of the day. The Charcuterie and the sourdough bread , though basic sounding, really was delicious as well. The Executive Chef stopped at our table to see how we liked everything and that was such a pleasant personal touch. We tried both the Chocolate cake and the Panna Cotta and both were amazing as well. Really great experience and will definitley be back.
Tasty small dishes
Every time we visit NYC, we go to Estela (need to reserve in advance, it’s relatively small). It offers small, tasty dishes like tuna tartare, scallops, black rice
Estela left a bad taste in our mouths.
Our experience was ruined by overly salty dishes that drowned out any hint of flavor. The Beef Tartare lacked the promised beefy essence, and the oysters were swimming in salt and garlic, making them nearly inedible. To make matters worse, the outrageous prices for tiny portions, like the $52 2oz Wagyu beef steak, felt like a rip-off. Even the supposedly delicate crab dish was ruined by too much salt, masking any subtle flavors. The monkfish, which was supposed to be a highlight, fell short, lacking any noticeable seasoning or creativity. On top of all that, the service was a mess. Despite having a reservation, we waited for half an hour to be seated, only to watch servers stumble around with our dishes, not sure where they were supposed to go. The fact that they didn't offer espresso or serve regular coffee properly only highlighted their shortcomings. And serving scalding hot coffee in a handle-less glass cup was just ridiculous. With over 1500 four-star reviews, I really hope this was a one-time experience, but unfortunately, our visit fell far short of expectations. The only good thing was the sourdough bread, which was the only thing worth eating, for a bill of $700 for four people. Despite its one-star Michelin rating, our disappointing visit to Estela has us doubting the credibility of such accolades.
Mixed, Very Mixed...
We were very excited to finally dine in this restaurant because its reputation, we came out a bit flat as the experience was definitely mixed. The staff was fantastic, they were kind and courteous, gave us great suggestions on their food and drink, and helped those ones of us have food allergies to avoid those dishes they should not eat. The ambiance is not as expected, very much like a neighborhood restaurant, informal, a bit crowded, but not very noisy. The white napkins left a lot of lint on dark clothing, a disappointment. But the biggest surprise was the lackluster of plating. The combination of ingredients for each dish were genius, but the food came out in such flat manner, the artistry of taste was not supported by the appearances. We were hoping that we might have a story to tell afterward, but I am not so sure that we have gotten that. A few dishes were fantastic, tasted wonderfully and beautiful to look at. I strongly recommend seeking advice from the wait staff before you order. This one could have been a total disappointment but the wait staff really guided us through it and we still enjoyed it.

Had the most fantastic meal- scallop, arroz negro, steak, and the sweet potato dessert were standouts. Phoebe was amazing and answered every one of our questions, flawless service. My tiny little water glass was constantly full thanks to an incredible service team! Literally made a reservation for later this week to try the rest of the menu while we were sat. Perfect meal, perfect space, perfect team, no notes.

Loved this restaurant! Every dish was delicious and surprising. The small plates allow lots of tasting even for two people. *Spoiler alert* - if you keep reading this review the surprises won't be quite as surprising... We started with the scallops with brown butter and golden potatoes which was presented as a perfect glossy hemisphere of... something. It turn out the hemisphere was a hyper-smooth potato puree that covered fairly raw scallops finished as a kind of ceviche in light lemon juice. The interplay of rich brown butter and bright lemon was a unique and yummy. Next up was the endive with walnuts, anchovy, and ubriaco rosso that continued the "surprise" theme. The again lemony endive completely covered the walnuts and 'chovies so that it initially looked like a plate of endive leaves. The bottom layer was rich and crunchy so that a bite would combine with the endive for a welcome and juicy "pop" in one's mouth. Our third dish was the star of the evening: fried arroz negro, squid, and romesco. This is essentially the bottom crunchy part of properly cooked paella using black rice. Wow - filling, satisfying, tremendously delicious. If you like paella don't skip this one. Our entrée was Berkshire pork with market greens and black truffles. A satisfying and filling end to a great meal. Our server was charming, knowledgeable about both the dishes and the right wine(s) to pair with and efficient. You could not ask for better service. A little difficult to find, you should make the effort to go to Estela. We're glad we did. Two thumbs up.

This post is long.
Only read if you want an in-depth analysis of the food, service, and ambiance at Estela. Summary: Good ambiance. Don't go for a reservation after 10pm because the staff is checked out and you won't get a Michelin Star experience. Flavor pairings seemed basic compared to other Michelin one star restaurants. Ambiance: Great. Dark & candlelit. Just what I want on a night out. 5 stars to this category. Service: Apparently good service stops at 10pm because the staff couldn't have cared about us less. We were never checked in on, only visited to order and receive food. To be fair, we got a 10:15pm reservation. It may have been our fault for eating dinner so late. At a regular restaurant I would have dismissed this poor late-night service, but at a Michelin star my expectation is that the service should be excellent throughout the whole evening. Food: No Wow! factor. Having been to more than 20 Michelin star restaurants from around the world (yes even Mario is jealous about how many stars I've collected), this is the first one that hasn't served a dish that has wowed me. At every other Michelin star, there is always a dish that makes me think "Wow, I have never tried anything like that before, and I could eat that forever." This one didn't only fail to do that, but disappointed me with their basic flavor pairings. We ordered 5 dishes: the olives marinated in oil, the beef tartare, the arroz negro, the ricotta dumplings, and the wagyu steak. Out of these dishes, 3 were okay, and 2 were disappointing. Highlight: arroz negro. Reminded me of Spanish paella. Good if you like paella with a crunch. Lowlight: ricotta dumplings. Buy Sargento's mozarella string cheese at the local supermarket and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds for the same effect. The wagyu and olives were good. Good not great. What makes these dishes stand out from other wagyu and olive dishes? I am still asking myself that question because nothing about them was unique. The beef tartare. Could have infiltrated a grouping of bruschetta and gone unnoticed. The beef was cut very thick, and it was overpowered by the capers and chopped onion. This dish would have deserved the lowlight if the dumplings didn't taste like string cheese. The ricotta dumplings. The mushroom slice on top was a cool addition aesthetically, but it did not add to the taste of the dish. This dish reminded me of my 10-year-old self grabbing a handful of string cheeses from the fridge. Estela, if that is what you were going for, you aced it! If not, it may help to decrease the size of the balls of cheese and pair them with stronger flavors. Overall, 3/5 stars is appropriate. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend, but I would accompany my friends to Estela if they wanted to go as a social occassion. However, I would eat beforehand.
I will never forget the first time I fell in love with
I will never forget the first time I fell in love with endives. Thank you, Estela. Maybe it was the sommelier's expansive knowledge and the sincere customer service. Or was it the beautiful summer day and good company that possessed me to order what seemed like a silly little lettuce like thing. Estela knows endives.
The food was incredible.
Everything we got was amazing and flavorful. I really liked the foie gras. I've never seen seared foie gras wrapped in grape leaves. Beef tartar was unique and creative. The oysters tasted super refreshing and the pork had really good seasoning. Desserts were great too. Lychee sorbet was particularly impressive. Our drinks were just okay though. Hard to pick cocktails from the menu that we typically like. The reasons why I gave 4 stars are mostly service and how crowded the restaurant was. Our waiter was pretty cold. And the restaurant was small and all the tables were squeezed into it. My friend couldn't get out of her seat without moving the table.
Every star in this review is for their food.
We took our server's recommendation and shared 4-6 plates, ranked below for balance of flavor and textured mouthfeels. Fried arroz negro with squid and romesco - an extremely satisfying bite with multiple forms of crunch coming from the rice and the nuts of the romesco. Grilled Lobster with woodear mushrooms and grapes - the smokiness of the lobster really permeated each chewy ear. I'm not a fan of lobster at all, but I could eat this preparation any day! Cured trout with bergamot and dashi - the little beads provided much appreciated bursts of brine. Marinated olives - the twist of grapefruit rind was not only a great palate cleanser, but an excellent pregame choice with drinks. Sourdough miche with butter - the rustic crust is what bread cravings are made of. Kudos to the bartenders for their Halo Spritz cocktail - it was unbelievably refreshing despite its complexity. Now for the ambiance. While our corner table felt "cozy" at first tucked away from the main dining room, it became "the spot" for people to wait for the rest of their party to arrive. We soon ran out of room to be able to get up or lift a drink without elbowing someone accidentally. That was our cue to get the check and go. Alas, even a Michelin star worthy meal can't stop NYC from doing what it does on a Friday night.

TLDR: A Michelin restaurant thats worth the hype! I recently had the pleasure of dining at Estela in NYC, and it was an absolute culinary delight! The squid ink risotto stole the show with its crispy texture and burst of flavors. The persimmon salad was incredibly fresh, and the wagyu steak was nothing short of insanely flavorful and delicious. To top off the meal, the chocolate lava cake with black sesame dessert was a revelation! It's hands down the best dessert I've had in NYC, offering insane flavors and depth. The combination of black sesame, oozing lava cake chocolate base, and the perfect cream on top created a dessert masterpiece.
Disappointing Experience at Estela – A Michelin Star Letdown
Having explored numerous Michelin Star establishments across Europe and the US, our visit to Estela left us thoroughly disappointed. From the lackluster seating arrangement to the absence of detailed food explanations, our expectations were not met. The culinary journey began with oysters that failed to impress, lacking the expected finesse. The tuna dish, while decent, fell short of the exceptional standards we've come to anticipate from Michelin Star venues. The rice negro, unfortunately, suffered from excessive saltiness, as did the venison, making both dishes unremarkable. Adding to the dismay was the underwhelming presentation, a departure from the meticulous artistry typical of Michelin Star restaurants. This experience, regrettably, stands out as one of the most subpar encounters we've had in such esteemed establishments. In conclusion, we cannot recommend Estela based on our disappointing visit, questioning how it acquired a Michelin Star in the first place. It is a stark contrast to the culinary excellence we've encountered elsewhere, leaving us perplexed and dissatisfied.
Really well executed Modern Italian
Food and service were terrific. Loved the endive dish (remarkable), the celery dish (incredible) but the tuna carpaccio was the best I've ever had. My wife loved the crab dish. Typical of upscaled modern Italian cooking, the food is very inventive using few ingredients, but caring about the quality of each of the ingredients. Our server, Eric, was attentive. High marks!!!
Great food with unbearable noise level
I was excited to try this place based on recommendations from foodie friends in the business. The food is fantastic, very shareable, the service varies from great to indifferent (our server who appeared not to want to be there). Food came very slowly (read 45 minutes) between shared dishes. The noise level is almost not compatible with any conversation and later on the music was turned on which basically reduced the dialogue to smiles. Clearly they are riding on success and being hip to pack the restaurant. Entrance very difficult to find. The food is a 5 but the experience a 3 due to noise level and our server (other servers appeared much more engaged).
Disappointingly average
This restaurant was recommended to us as having delicious and innovative new American cuisine. We found it to be innovative but not consistently delicious. We were encouraged to order 4-6 small plates for the 2 of us. The sliced summer squash in miso sauce was delightful but the quantity was overwhelming. The ricotta ravioli were in fact dumplings in a broth but they were delicious. Our most extravagant choice was the lobster with fava beans and woodears. The lobster tail was very small( 2-3 bites) and came with 4 beans and woodear mushrooms that were much like eating rubber.
Bad Service!
Went here a few months ago for brunch and had a really bad experience with our waitress. She was rude and short with us from the beginning, and when we ordered a breakfast sandwich we asked her if it was easy to share to who I have replied “how would I know, I won’t be the one sharing it”. No offer to cut it for us. Food was just ok, not worth the price point for weird service!
