Great food but expensive
The restaurant is located close to Stanford Campus and we have dined here several times in the past. Food was excellent was excellent and creatively presented, however I felt everything was overpriced and overall not commensurate with the quality and quantity. Cocktails delicious but expensive. The service was OK but waitstaff was not particularly friendly or engaging. Overall solid meal, but we don’t think we will be returning because there are lots of other excellent options in the Bay Area at this price point.

This place is really bad. Mediocre to tasteless food and WAY overpriced!!! By far the worst meal I have ever had at this price ! Four of us ordered a selection of their " best " starters and main courses as suggested by our waiter. Not a single dish was particularly good. In particular the "195 dollar Peking Duck" over fried rice was awful. It was so salty that it was inedible, greasy, poor texture and nothing like traditional Peking Duck. The wait staff were very not very interested and did not notice the huge amount of ( barely edible) food left on the table. Then the bill came for 880 dollars for 4 with a large tip included. Although we did enjoy a good bottle of wine that was 240, still it was over 600 dollars for an awful dinner for 4. The salad and brussel sprouts were mediocre ( several notches below any I have ever served at home) the crab cake was the worst I have ever tasted and almost inedible. The Halibut was actually quite good, but a tiny portion, but the only restaurant quality dish. The vegetarian sampler was awful and, as mentioned, the worst dish was the duck ( did I mention 195 dollars??!!) for a final bad measure the sorbet and ice cream werr both on the low side of mediocre In sum, avoid this place! There are so many good dining options in the area. Our dinner was so bad and so expensive it was almost comical. I thought someone would be filming and say "you got punked" But no, we got to the car, looked at ea j other and said " we got ripped off" I just read some of the other recent reviews and our experience was not unique

Went with my Brother and Sister in laws to celebrate a new home purchase and did not disappoint. The rooms are specious with tables spread out and the interior tastefully decorated. The waitstaff is attentive and pleasant. The real stars of the show is the food. Every item we ordered was special- uniquely flavored, fresh and interestingly presented. Love the fresh made bread and biscuits with butter ribbons and salt. We had the Cauliflower soup, beet salad, veggie dish and Halibut- all super as was the chocolate soufflé we shared. Interesting selection of wine and cocktails. Really a terrific meal and I’m sure we will be back.

Don't give this criminal establishment your credit card information. They'll use it to wring every penny then can from you with their punitive policies; I can't understand why a business would treat their customers this way. They charged an additional $200 the day after we ate there on the credit card I used to make the reservation - after they had already charged 3 of us $400 for an astoundingly unsatisfying meal. We had added and removed 4 people to our reservation in the hour before we ate there. They charged us $50 per person that did not show up. I want to emphasize that the additional people who ended up not coming were added and removed from the reservation in under an hour. We apologized for the cancellation, but Brian the chef insisted he had to charge the 3 of us the large party $95 per person prixe fixe meal; we agreed, and we were even, hilariously, charged an additional $12 dollars for the scallop choice on the pre-fixe menu, which consisted of 3 small scallops and raw bok choy; I do not exaggerate. This sleazy business has unscrupulous policies in place so they can take as much money from you up front, probably because they know you won't come back for the food. Complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau, $200 charge disputed, and reversed by my credit card company. Brian is overconfident in his culinary worth: overpriced, poorly prepared, parsimonious servings of unappetizing food. This whole dining experience has left a vile taste in our mouths.
Be the first to ReplyFlea Street Cafe a Disappointment
I recently ate at Flea Street Cafe in Menlo Park. It has been many years since I last ate there (before pandemic) and I was looking forward to a good meal, since my experience in the past has been very good at this restaurant. I had previously appreciated the quality of the food and the attention to detail in each of the preparations. This time I was very disappointed. I had ordered the Ciopinno dish hoping to have a wonderful fish stew full of tasty shellfish. The problem with the dish was that the clams which were a key part of the dish were all still full of sand, which when eaten resulted in a gritty sensation in my mouth which did not go away. It was not just one clam but all 5 or 6 of the clams. When the waiter asked “how was the food” I told him I was surprised to have sand in the clams. He said, “I will tell the chef about that”. There however was nothing about the dish I ordered and I did not get a response from the chef. On the way out, the waiter said he took a small discount out of my bill. In most other restaurants, they will try to do something to correct the dish they served, not expecting the customer to accept it as is. I have eaten clams in many restaurants before and never had the experience of having sand still left in the clams. With the reputation this restaurant has, I would have expected the chef to make sure the shellfish were properly rinsed and cleaned before cooking and serving. I am hoping next time more care is given to preparation of this dish to ensure the quality remains and other customers don’t have the same experience as I did.

I feel cheated after eating this incredibly disappointing and outrageously overpriced meal. First, they insisted on charging us large party "3-course set price menu" even though 4 people cancelled at the last minute. This might be understandable if we hadn't just added the 4 people an hour before the time of the reservation, so it wasn't like they spent all day preparing for our large party. In any case, we felt stuck and figured an excellent meal would be worth the cost so we agreed. The meal would have been considered mediocre to lousy even if we hadn't paid $400 for 3 people. 3 small, unremarkable scallops were cut in half for the entree, and served with some completely raw chopped bok choy over a smear of pureed turnip. The tiny portion entree of rockfish was tough and tasted bad, and was served over slightly cooked and unseasoned cubes of carrots. Nothing else came with either dish. The appetizers were small and forgettable. I rarely write reviews, and I know that restaurants are struggling, but this experience was so atrocious that I feel compelled to spare others. The chef preferred to gouge us and get his money up front since he can't count on people coming back for the terrible food. I'll concede that it's a pretty restaurant, but there is no culinary substance beneath the veneer. Go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplySo disappointed! Waited 3 hours for 2 courses - left before dessert
I wanted to organize a special dinner for my family after Stanford graduation. As we were a group larger than 5, we needed to get the $89/pp prix fixed menu. We arrived just before 6PM, and were one of the first dinner seatings of the evening from what I could see. While we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant - that was the only thing positive about our dining experience. We knew something was wrong when it took 30 mins for them to serve us our first round of drinks. The portions are EXTREMELY small - so we finished our courses within a few mins of receiving them. We wound up waiting between 45-60 mins between each course to arrive, despite asking for our food multiple times. What's worse is that we observed tables which sat down long after us come and go... After 3 hours at the table, and with our entire table becoming increasingly aggravated (and exhausted from the day/the sun), we asked the kitchen to pack our desserts to go - which also took over 45 mins since we finished our second course. The manager had already left for the evening - but one of the staff gave us a small discount (which didn't even cover the steep 22% service charge they added onto our bill). Overall the bill ended up being close to $150/pp for a party of 6 adults, and we left feeling hungry! We understand that this could've been a busy time as it was graduation day. However - Stanford graduation happens at the same time every year so that should've been expected. Run, do not walk away from Flea Street. If you're looking for fine dining, there are far better places in the PA/MP/Bay area that you can go to.

It was my wife’s birthday and she chose Flea Street Café for celebration.
We will be joined by a daughter. So it is a simple matter to make reservation for three. Not so fast
“That is a Saturday and we are all booked.”
Okay we will do it the day before. What is the corkage, for we like to bring our own wine saved for special occasions?
“It will be $45 per bottle.”
Mmmm. I think we will drink it at home beforehand.
“We require proof of vaccination and a photo ID before we can seat you.”
We are vaccinated and will bring the certificates.
“For reservation we require a deposit of $50 per person.”
That is unusual, but we dutifully paid it.
“To protect our staff, you must bus your own used dishes in the tray provided.”
No problem. We did as told.
“We have a staffing system with no front/back distinction. For that we charge a mandatory 20% minimum service fee.”
OK, whatever is right.
When the check came, we were not credited with the $150 deposit. We had to ask for it and it got changed without explanation or apology. Since the deposit is supposedly mandatory for everyone, it is inconceivable that the cashier simply “forgot” about it just in our case.
With many loyal and faithful customers, Flea Street Café can arguably make up their own house rules without affecting business. What I experienced was mandatory above-average service charge with well below-average (if not illegal) service. I did not enjoy my visit there. There are many fine local restaurants which would welcome my patronage. I will go to those in future and leave Flea Street to its loyal fans.
BTW, the 2014 Ridge Monte Bello we drank at home beforehand was spectacular! It saved the day.

Excellent food and atmosphere (if pricey)
This is a lovely restaurant, great attention to the food and the overall eating environment.
Small items like the biscuits are almost comically overpriced (even before the mandatory 22% service charge on to-go orders, increased beyond 20% by applying the tax after rather than before the service). Overall, a good restaurant for a special occasion.
Good biscuits but expensive!
We heard about these amazing biscuits and decided to pick some up. They come frozen and are definitely very good. But with an extra charge (covid? handling? don't remember what they called it) and tax, it was about $30 for a dozen small biscuits. A bit pricey. The restaurant looks good and I hope to give it a try soon.

The food is both delicious and creative. This cozy restaurant has been our go to for years. The service is top notch without being over the top. And the food ... just yum.

Flea Street Cafe is always a great destination to celebrate with friends and family. The locally sourced ingredients make for creative dishes that are inventive, fresh and delicious. There are always good vegan and vegetarian options as well as meat and fish dishes. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and the service is outstanding and warm. Jesse Cool is a local treasure and always takes time to greet diners and make sure all is running well.
Be the first to ReplyA restaurant that cares about its costumers.
Though walking the fine line between elegant and pretentious can prove to be a difficult task, Flea Street Cafe continuously does so effortlessly. Now ranking among the places I visit on a weekly basis (Evvia & The Village Pub), I find myself being comforted by the mere sight of seeing I'm soon to attend a meeting being held at Flea Street Cafe! Picked fresh from their farms and plated with prestige, you will be reminded that hands-on will always remain the reigning power in a time of commercialism.
They are a reliable source for quality, craftsmanship, authenticity in their execution, and most of all... consistency in all the above. I am ALWAYS met with warm smiles, food that never fails to please my (at times) caustic palette, and a complete experience. Whether you come in casual attire or your finest evening wear, you somehow fit into the timeless restaurant that is Flea Street Cafe. Yes, it is pricey and yes, even my frugal self deems it completely worth it.
Very impressed.
Fantastic food, attentive service, the works! Should be 2Star Michelin
I love this place. Whenever I get a chance for a lovely, farm fresh, creative meal, I come here. My last outing I started with the lovely, tasty fried green tomatoes - delicious, with some bacon crumbles and a green sauce. The season is probably going away for those, so even though I had them last couple of times at the restaurant, I had to have them again. Oh, so good. Then a lovely garden salad with some figs and a delicious dressing. For my main course, I had the calamari appetizer (had to save room for dessert), which was just right, crispy with a tasty sauce. Dessert was the peach galette, absolutely flaky, tender (probably another one ending the season), with a creme fraiche homemade ice cream. Service was superb, not hovering but just right. I can't rave any more about this place - I love it. Many times I come on my own, and other times with my spouse, and/or friends.

We celebrated our daughter's birthday here last Saturday night. Hadn't been to Flea Street in a number of years and we certainly were not disappointed. Everything was delicious and our server, Donna, did a terrific job. Also, we could actually talk without having to shout. I look forward to dining there again.

For us this is a special occasion dining experience. Every aspect is first class - service, menu choices and wine list. Emphasis is on local sourcing, organic and sustainability. We shared our first two dishes - crispy sardines (yum), followed by a farm salad with figs and tiny heirloom tomatoes. Sharing plates and serving spoons and forks were provided without extra charge. For our main course we ordered the king salmon and gnocchi. Clean sharing plates appeared. Both dishes were excellent. We were pretty full by the end, but managed to save a little space for a delicious peach galette. If you have a special birthday or anniversary ... or just want to treat yourself to a wonderful dining experience, try Flea Street. Reservations recommended.
