Moved to the area a few years ago.
Decided to check this place out last week. I've been to old forts around the country, and this one isn't anything special. It's from the Spanish American War. It has half a dozen cannons and a few rooms. There are some cool picks and maps in one of the rooms. Beach nearby as well as a pier. It's worth checking out at least once.

If you like big guns and sandy beaches this is the place for you.great for a little day of exploring. Check out whats left of the old fort withe several preserved huge artillery guns.the ruins on the beach is the coolest part for me. I explored on bike and I recommend it. You are able to cover much more ground this way.best part is other than parking it's FREE!
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot to visit! There is a beautiful beach.
It is longer than wife and has good sand. There is a pier and there were people fishing, swimming, sail gliding, and playing group games. The fort is very cool and there are informational plaques to teach you about the fort. There is also a shop and a little cafe for you to buy your souvenirs and any snacks/drinks you may want. I really liked this park a lot and will visit again.

Seemed to be nickel and dime to death. Save your money and go someplace that wants your business. This park appears to not want or care.

The Campground, here at Fort DeSoto has to be one of the prettiest I have ever seen. Lush palm trees abound, giving the ample RV sites, really cool privacy. We have good water pressure and 50Amp electric. It's a sandy spot, and backing in around the trees, requires a little skill, but very worth while.

It's a bit of a drive to get down here otherwise, I'd go more often, but it really is worth the trip to visit! Gorgeous park with pristine beaches. I enjoy coming here in the winter to appreciate the wildlife, shells, etc. Get the annual park pass, it helps to support parks like this and keep them maintained!

Beautifully clear water, white sandy beaches and clean facilities for patron use. What else do you need?

Love this park so much!! It's great for running, swimming, fishing, kayaking, everything. I love coming here during sun rise to run and it's always so beautiful. They don't open til 7 am and you have to pay for parking. There is no admission fee though. Definitely would recommend!
Be the first to ReplyWe found this beach by a local.
We didn't want to go to the busy beaches in Clearwater so we made the trip from our place in Dunedin that took 1hr. The parking is $5 and we did pass a couple tolls which was cheap also. The beach was not crowded at all. The sand were white sands and super soft. We decided to take a walk down the beach near the ferry I believe it is and ended up finding a hidden paradise. The water was crystal clear. The shells were HUGE. No one was there so will be going back to go back that area. It's a very long walk though and you have to cross some water to get to the other island
Be the first to ReplyIt's ok.
The snack bar area had reserved the entire shaded area, so there was no seating other then in the sun. Burger was so-so and very expensive.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome park.
Not super "beachy" but perfect for bikes, camping, windsurfing, and any of those things. If you aren't into those activities it's fun to watch. Some friends & I even laid out there! Beautiful spot with a view of the bridge from all places.

The fort is interesting and you get some great views from the top. The real draw is the pier and beach. We saw a few fish balls off the pier and the birds were very active, diving, flying and floating on the water. I found quite a few new shells and one beachcomber gave me a small WHOLE sand dollar. Thank you kind sir! It made my day. If you have time I'd also recommend seeing the other small beaches and maybe fishing. You can also rent kayaks in the area.

What a nice spot to walk, bike, beach even with your dog! There is a large designated beach area for dogs and they can even bring their human companions! If it's hot, bring lots of water for your pup, there is a watering station in both dog park areas complete with a wash down to soak your pet, but the whole area is quite large and mostly full sun. Download the Flowbird app and pay for parking right on your phone. Enjoy!

We were not aware of this park but were wandering our way up to Clearwater and decided to check it out. $5 to park seemed reasonable. We went out on the fishing pier, walked around the old military grounds and the old fort. We picnicked at one of the shelters along the north beach area. That is one giant parking lot. I can only guess that on weekends in season it must be a zoo but today it was pretty empty despite the gorgeous weather. If we come back we will bring or rent bikes since there are many nicely paved bike trails. Looks like you can also rent kayaks. Lots to do in this park!
Be the first to ReplyFort Desoto Park is a large, beautiful area.
Not only does it have the remains of a fort that was active through World War II, but it has large tracts of stunning beaches. There's also a dog beach where the pups can run around and splash in the surf if they'd like to. It's a great place to spend time at the beach, picnic or stroll or bicycle around. There's also a place to rent bicycles.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect quiet location to go for an evening stroll.
The water is clear, sand is bright white, and the most unique seashells around.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite beach to visit when in St.
Pete. The shells are abundant and we always see an assortment of wild life. You can explore the Fort or take a ferry over to Egmont Key for even more exploring.
Be the first to ReplyWell it's a Fort by the water.
You have to pay for parking. Lots of room on beaches no one there. Lots of pavilions to sit under. The old Fork has some cool things great for kids. Plus they have snack bars
Be the first to ReplyWonderful campground.
Very helpful and friendly staff. I wish I had more time to stay. Campsites separated by palm trees. Clean beach with white sand is a 5 minutes drive away from the campground.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place to go to the beach.
It's become a bit more crowded over the years, but it's still a nice beach to go and the $5 fee to get in the park is fair, because it helps with the upkeep of the park. A few years ago we went to the gift shop and at the time they were very reasonably priced (who don't appreciate fair prices?). The restrooms aren't the best, because where we were there was only one to go in to. Not one, two or more stalls. Just one room. It was all good though, they at least have one. We went to the sand bars this last time and found lots of sand dollars and big shells.
