Though it has been known as a home of good food (I agree), Frances has also been known (let's be honest!) as a bit difficult to navigate through the friction. Before covid the often heard line was "chef prefers"... after remembering that we were paying chef, graciously, put a pause on it. This past Saturday, after two very pleasent experiences, this year, decided to celebrate an early Valentine's dinner and when making the reservation requested the last table in the back. This is a corner table, two or three top. Upon arrival noticed the requested table was occupied and we mentioned it to the host. Host - "We do not reserve tables..." Us - "That's okay there are two tables up front how about the one on the right?" (The one right was set for two people and was not tight. The one on the left was set for two people but tiny.) Host - "Oh, that table is reserved for a larger person..." Us - "I'm sorry, I don't understand...I thougth you just told us you do not reserve tables" Host - "It's none of your business..." Us - "Okay, thank you, we are not going to eat here this evening..." Host - "Good and don't come back.." These are the actual quotes from the exchange. Disappointing, to say the least. To be fair, the food is very good and the servers have all been solid. The host, (aka, CEO of first impressions) is miscast. It was clear that the host wanted to be right at the expense of offending guests in front of other guests. We went around the corner to another, high-end, restaraunt and were seated in 10 minutes, without friction. Part of dining is how you are greeted...this impression is lasting. (Note, my location shows Houston but I have a home in SF and am there regularly)

Sometimes your dumb date cancels and you do a happy dance cause you're already in the area and do a quick pivot towards this Castro classic and plop your butt at the bar....eat all the things. Get served perf every time and leave so so delightfully full.

The food was exceptional. The vibe is warm, laid back, and has a light elegance. All of the flatware and glasses are beautiful as is the plating. The servers are friendly and courteous and I appreciate that they are often invisible and don't make their presence larger than necessary. We ordered the bread, octopus, soup, crab spaghetti, and the short rib. All were delightful. The octopus had a perfect char/smokey crust. The soup (I always recommend ordering the soup at Frances!) was superb. Frances soups have a light airiness to the texture as if they were just immersion blended before arriving at your table. The crab curry spaghetti was unbelievable. What a unique and memorable offering. Get it while you can. This has been a favorite spot of ours for many years. This visit was the first time back in several years and Frances remains delightful.

I dropped in here on a Friday night, and they were busy, so we had to wait about 45 minutes. I love that we get a lot of food for a reasonable price. Other than that, the ambiance and staff are both above par.

We came in a Saturday evening without a reservation and got lucky with the seating. They gave us the last couple seats by the bar. They filled up quickly soon after we arrive around 5:30pm. We ordered one appetizer and one dessert to share. The entrees are amazing, snapper and pork chop. The ambiance was good too. We would definitely come back with a reservation. We also wanted to try the tasting menu next time. I think this restaurant is on its path to get a Michelin star. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyChef's kiss! Food, service and ambiance is remarkable.
Worth every "Benjamin" and will not disappoint even the most discriminating palate!

Frances is a warm, inviting, laid back restaurant with delicious, seasonal American eats and an impeccably curated wine selection. There's little to complain about here, though some portions were a bit smaller than we would have liked. Overall, the food ranged from solid to excellent and the wine was very very special. Great for date night or a low-key friends hang if you're looking for refined food in a down to earth setting. I came here with my sister and husband at 8:15 on a Saturday night. One thing that's exceptional beginning to end here is service. Everyone we interacted with there -- host, servers, those explaining wine -- all just so friendly and warm. The ambiance is already friendly and warm, so this really enhanced the entire vibe of the place. Frances only serves wine and beer, and as I mentioned, the wine here is really next-level. I tried two different glasses and both were excellent -- particularly the first, which was the Suertes del Marqués "LISTÁN BLANCO" 'Trenzado' Tenerife, from the Canary Islands. One of the more unique wines I've tried at a restaurant, high acidity and kind of smoky due to the grapes growing in volcanic soil (we got a crash course from one of the servers which was interesting and much appreicated). My second wine was the Negotians Vinarius "POŠIP" from Croatia, a low-intervention skin-contact wine. Also very good, but nothing could compare to that first wine. Food-wise, we opted for a la carte so we could split a bunch of options. There's decent variety on the menu, with lots of seasonal produce which I always appreciate. Eats, below: Roasted beets w/ pt.reyes bay blue cheese, pistachio, makrut lime leaf: A- We almost ordered two of these because we just wanted more of that bay blue! A solid salad but on the small side. The beets themselves were fine -- they served as a nice canvas for all other flavors/elements to shine. Asian pear w/ owari mandarin, persimmon, pomegranate, fermented spiced honey: B I do love pears but this dish was a little boring. Nice use of seasonal ingredients though. Very small portion. Grilled octopus w/ honeynut squash romesco, farro verde, fennel: A- A refined octopus preparation. I appreciated the starch element being incorporated into the romesco as potatoes/squash tend to be roasted and served as a side to octopus in many dishes. The farro verde was delicious and really made the dish. Lettuces w/ purple daikon, house croutons, burnt satsuma dressing: B Skip these. Letdown of the night, pretty boring. With those ingredients it had potential but I'd say it's not worth the price. Tasted fine but you could do better. Snapper w/ creamy cauliflower, brussels sprouts, fines herbs: A+ The mains are where this meal really took off. Sadly I don't have a picture of either of them, probably because they smelled so good and we were still pretty hungry when they arrived so we dove right in. Melt-in-your-mouth fish, perfectly cooked, with the winter veggies complementing its flavors perfectly. Wagyu short rib w/ king trumpets, toasted farro, torpedo onion, coriander caper jus: A I'm honestly not a big red meat person. I don't like steak. It's strange, but it's my truth. Short rib is a tad different for whatever reason, and this preparation was right up my alley. Rich and earthy, all around great flavors. More winter veggies and grains that blended well together. Pavlova w/ shinko pear, roasted pear sherbet, finger lime creme legere, mint: A I rarely order dessert at meals but that's what makes the few times I do special. My husband got the pot de creme and I let him enjoy that without trying it, but it was finished swiftly. The pavlova was the perfect sweet treat to end the night. Very light with delicate flavors, a tasty and super sophisticated dish.

This was a very delightful experience! Everything was delicious and we had wonderful service from Emily D. and the rest of the crew. We shared all of the dishes among three of us and were prepared to have smaller bites from the starters. The scallop crudo was my favorite from all the starters with a good balanced flavor of dashi. The beet salad was well seasoned and warm which was a nice surprise. The sweetwater oysters were fresh and delicious but the passionfruit was just a tad overpowering and tart for my taste. The casarecce pasta was okay. I liked the al dente texture of the pasta but it was slightly salty and took away from the freshness of the sauce. The short rib was a generous portion, super tender, well seasoned and had a nice sear on the outside. Dessert! This is one of the few occasions where all all desserts were equally impressive. The pot de creme was the favorite of the table with a good hazelnut crumble for texture. The lumberjack cake was moist and well paired with cardamom ice cream. Finally the restaurant gave us some birthday sea-salt chocolate cookies which had the perfect richness of chocolate.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a treat to spend Christmas Eve at Francis for dinner
What a treat to spend Christmas Eve at Francis for dinner last night. A heartfelt shoutout to all of the staff who were so incredibly gracious while away from loved ones on Christmas Eve. The fixed price menu was sumptuous (one of us is vegetarian -- they wonderfully accommodated). Don't ever forget to order the bread. It's served fresh as can be with delicious salted butter. The courses just kept coming, each one as delicious as the previous one -- and all so INVENTIVE and AMAZING. The wine pairing was perfectly selected. The room is gorgeous with just the right lighting and just the right noise level. BRAVO!!!!!!!!
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommend the pork chop and the dessert Pavlova.
Pork chop is super juicy and tender with Fuji apples. I love the refreshing combination of utilizing fruits with the meat dish. The Pavlova also comes with pear sherbet and a very light dessert that is not super sweet for my liking. We also love the kampachi crudo with black sesame which is something different from many other crudo that are more ponzu based. It is a quite unique flavor. The autumn fruits are also a great appetizer to eat if you want something refreshing. Restaurant has more of intimate ambience due to dim lighting. One thing to note is the rather closeness of the table. It is slightly hard to get in or out and you can easily hear conversation of others. Waiters have to move the tables to the side for people to get in and sit. Overall, Its still nice place to bring your date here due to the quality dishes. I would love to come back to try new dishes. I like how many dishes utilize fresh fruits!
Be the first to ReplyFrances was our most visited restaurant before COVID.
Sadly, something has gone really wrong because everything was off this last time we visited. The salad was flavorless, the main dishes were so bland I could not believe this was the Frances we used to love and brag about. Even the staff were not sophisticated as before. The feel and taste is not a restaurant I will go back to sadly. Way overpriced for the quality of what you get. Pre pandemic outstanding, I wouldn't recommend it now.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful hidden gem restaurant in the Castro.
We came here a lot when we lived in SF about 8-10 years ago. We made the trip back to SF for dinner tonight and it did not disappoint. Excellent prix fix dinner with lovely Riesling and Rose wine. Sat in enclosed parklet patio with overhead heaters. Plenty warm, great service. Well worth it. We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplySo so good.
Loved everything about this place. It's so minimal and the staff is so nice. They're not pushy or moody. They pretty much let you enjoy your meal and give you the space and time to figure out what you want and savor your food. I did not see one person be standoff-Ish or make you feel like they're doing you a favor by letting you dine there. The food was incredible. Every ingredient was fresh and the flavors went well together without being overpowering. The kale was the best kale I've ever had.One thing I would suggest is to give a little bit more of sauce with each item. They're just so good that it would be nice to have a little more of them. Definitely recommend!

I've only been able to make it here once, but it's still one of the best meals I've had in the city. Very small space and you'll need a reservation pretty far in advance, but really it's worth it. I loved the "wine by the liter" option, and all of our dishes were amazing.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good.
We got the tasting menu with wine pairing. But for that price point, you can go to so many better places in SF. So that's why I give it 3 stars. It's nothing spectacular and nothing I couldn't make at home. That said, service was good and the wine pour was generous. However, it also felt a little rushed. They kept bringing the dishes out back to back and a little pause between dishes would have been nice.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved and enjoyed our dinner at Frances.
The service was spot on, and the food was perfect. Our server picked a delicious wine that paired perfectly with our dishes. It was a true pleasure to be in a restaurant that had knowledgeable servers that enjoyed their work.

Its so wonderful dining there and this is one of my family's favorite restaurant. Though its a bit pricey but its reasonable with the kind of they have. Its so excellent and it has lovely setting, so fancy and it also has an intimate vibe. The menu is excellent. Wonderful cocktails too. It taste great and so cool. The service is really great.

Went to Frances for Christmas Eve dinner and was happy with the courses. Service was good but not great given the price point - on two occasions the next course was brought to the table when our completed dish plates had not yet been removed and no one checked in with us to ask how we were doing/how the meal was. I will say however the wine pours were very generous so that was appreciated. The last course of prime rib was delicious. I agree with another review regarding the restaurant space, it is small and feels very cramped. There's also only one restroom so more time was spent waiting in a line to use the restroom than I'd prefer during a nice meal. Overall a really good meal and experience.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing.
The new inside space is far too crowded. Staff and customers are falling over each other from the poor design. If you like traveling in economy class seats you will like the seating at Francis. On the other hand the servers do their best to work in an environment with too many seats. Food is good, not great. Very simple presentations but the same dishes are better elsewhere. Even though the dishes are simple the kitchen seems to struggle getting them out quickly or with any pacing. Some came all at once and some, like the prime rib took so long it was cold when it arrived. It's unfortunate but this is like some other restaurants that are not what they used to be.

Dope. This place has nice small plates with the quality of State Bird Provisions, and definitely has a classy, understated appeal to it. If you've got money to spare and can grab a table, a fantastic place to bring someone you'd like to impress but not overwhelm with stuffiness. My only gripe is that the menu could be a bit more creative, there have to be more ways to do 'California fare' than little gem salads!
Be the first to ReplySo lovely.
Ambiance. Food. Wine. Can't recommend more. Please make sure to thank the staff and the chef with gratuities.
Be the first to ReplyAlthough they're currently closed, the reopening of Frances
Although they're currently closed, the reopening of Frances this spring is one of the restaurants I'm most excited for this year.Having been here a few times, I've been extremely impressed with their grilled meats. The pork chop is quite simply out of this world - it's immensely tender and juicy, likely due to the brining process used to prep it before it's fire grilled. It also helps that the portion is quite generous, and the grilled veggies along with it pair perfectly with the fattiness on the pork bone. Can't wait to come back to this place and see what new developments they've thought up in the year plus that they've been closed.
Be the first to ReplyIf I lived in San Francisco, I would eat here often.
But to drive from San Jose - not sure. The staff is excellent, and the food is very welcoming and feels like good home cooking by a chef with real technique.
Be the first to Replythey are back! Thank youI give a 4.
9 for tonight the food was fantastic (except for the burnt tricots)... the service as impeccable as always. My only beef - my reservation was $110 prepaid, however the tasting menu was $65 and that is what I got.... Can someone explain the difference. it is so nice to see the staff there again and enjoy the fantastic food!
