Like a review below stated, go for the ambiance not the food. I went last night and had been wanting to go for awhile now. The food was lacking in every single way. Descriptions on the menu would be helpful as well. I'm a pescatarian who eats eggs & cheese. How am I supposed to know what Devils on Horseback are? I would assume deviled eggs. Glad I asked my nasty waitress. I had to send back the greens I ordered because I ordered the radicchio endive salad and the burrata for my friend and I as starters. I ordered roasted wild mushrooms and greens from the bottom of the menu thinking it was cooked greens because it was amongst things cooked and it didn't say: salad and wasn't under the salad menu. One would think my waitress would have been intuitive enough to say hey: That's another salad. Did you really want another salad? Instead of her being annoyed with me when I sent it back because I already had a salad and was expecting cooked greens. My waitress was awful as well. She was rude, curt and short with me and my guest but cheers I still tipped you 20% on the $118 tab. Honestly, I should have just stayed at home or gone somewhere else. The food looks amazing from the website photos. It's not. I also expect to be treated better.

I said I would not come back, but proximity and convenience pulled me back. I updated this from three stars to four stars because the food was the same, but the drinks were better, and service from Jim (please give props to Jim) was quite good. I had the Blood & Honey (tequila, vermouth, blood orange, grapefruit, absinthe, cucumber, lemon, Aleppo honey) was super tart, crisp, and refreshing. I also had the Freeman's cocktail, which was subtle, smooth, comforting. It had rye, pomegranate, lemon, and orange bitters. I'm not a whiskey/rye person, but this was quite good, and was Jim's suggestion. This is still not my favorite place, but Jim's great service necessitates another star.
Be the first to ReplyWent for brunch, great secret restaurant down an alley way.
Historical restaurant great decor. Food was great large portions. Staff was very nice. Nice cozy spot perfect in a nice chilly day.
Be the first to ReplyThat French toast though! It was delicious.
It's a really cool spot, tucked away down Freeman Alley. I loved the feeling of home this place offers, especially on a cold day like today. The food came fast considering how busy they were. I will definitely add this place to the rotation of spots in the city.
Be the first to ReplyI have been here many times but this trip left me lacking.
The food was Ok. Did not seem as good as usual and the service was not very good. It felt like a rushed, lack luster experience over all.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for an early dinner with a friend.
The restaurant is very pretty, with great vibes for hanging out with friends or date night! They have a nice cocktail list - I had the 3 day martini, which consists of gin that sits in olive oil for 3 days, but I didn't get a lot of olive oil flavor in it. It was still a very good martini, just not as olive-y as I would have expected. My friend had the burrata toast and was very happy with her choice - it had a whole large burrata, which she really enjoyed! I was a bit hungrier, so went with the Amish chicken breast with sweet potato. It was very good, loved the little beans that were part of the dish. The service was great - I never felt rushed to order or to finish our meal.

This restaurant is in a fantastically redone house at the end of an ally in the Bowery. You walk through a warren of different dining rooms that look like... dining rooms--with overstuffed chairs, fireplaces... it's like you've gone through a time portal straight into a house from Gangs of New York. It was one of the coziest restaurants I have ever been in. Which is why the food was a bit disappointing. It wasn't bad, it just didn't live up to the incredible setting. I mean, hot artichoke dip with crisp bread is hard to fuck up, but it's more like hangover food than special-night-out-gonna-get-lucky food. That is to say, its heavy and filling and forgettable. There was a duck, there was a fish--branzino, I think. There was a burger. Was there a bread pudding? I can't remember. They were all edible. I mean, would I go there again? Sure--you could probably still get lucky there just from the ambiance, and in spite of the unremarkable food.

Cool interior. English breakfast was good. Chicken and waffles were okay - wasn't a huge fan of the chipotle honey but I appreciate the attempt to mix it up.Service was friendly, food came out quick.

Down a (well lit) and well-decorated alley lies this gem, which opened in 2004. Food and cocktails were incredible, but be wary if you sit at the bar near the door - it does get chilly when people are consistently exiting/entering.

Went with a visiting friend for brunch! Rustic cute spot hidden gem in an alleyway. While I waited for my friend, I was able to sit by the bar, great service.I ordered the berry waffles (8/10) and it was delicious! Classic brunch item but Freeman's made it special with their strawberry butter! Waffles were light she fluffy and had a generous amount of berries. Maple syrup just tied it altogether. My friend ordered the fried chicken and waffles (8/10). Very filling, friend didn't like the veggies on top. Overall typical brunch spot with traditional dishes, didn't exactly wow me. Cute gesture of service, the waiter gave my friend and I a postcard so that we can write our departing messages to each other!

Their artichoke dip is so delicious! Any of the cocktails are just perfectly balanced. We had Edgar as our bartender and he is super, super helpful and friendly, his recommendations were on point. Even the night was crowded, he was timely dropped! Five Cheese Macaroni so yummy!
Be the first to ReplyMight be a tad difficult for a first-timer to find.
Take just a short walk down the graffiti-covered alley to step inside. Once inside you level the Bowery behind. The atmosphere feels more upstate than city. I was impressed with the level of care and service we received. Tonight we went with the Artichoke dip and Brussels to start. Followed by the steak and salmon for the main. Love the vibe, love the food, appreciate the service.
Be the first to ReplyYou never have a bad meal or time at Freemans.
It feels like the most perfect hidden gem in the city even though everyone knows about it. To say it's a special place is a huge understatement. The food is as delicious and cozy as the atmosphere as are the expertly made drinks. Our last server Alex is probably the nicest server in all of NYC and made our experience even more enjoyable than normal. Love this place! P.S. Bring back the escarole and beans! I loved that dish and it went away :(
Be the first to ReplyWaited 2+ hours for entree.
Food was tepid and really average for the expense. Complained to manager about the crazy wait time and did not even comp a round of drinks. Service is lack-luster and food is average. I really wanted to like this place
Be the first to ReplyGo here.
The drinks are phenomenal. We weren't able to eat brunch or dinner because reservations were very hard to get...... which likely means their food is as good as their craft cocktails. However, we were able to have an appetizer with our cocktails - the devil on horseback stuffed jalapeños are legit!

We had some travel delays getting to the restaurant and was late for the reservation but that staff was so friendly and accommodating. Our server was also very nice and really helpful when it came to the menu (the entire menu looked delicious and we needed help narrowing down the options). We started with the artichoke dip, which was incredibly delicious. I had the roasted chicken breast with a side of the crispy Brussels sprouts - also incredibly delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked and all the vegetables and the farro tied the entire dish together perfectly.I wish I had room for dessert! The interior decor was adorable. I felt like we were secluded from the rest of Manhattan in a hidden gem. It was cozy and reminded me of Colorado. Absolute must for get together with friends, date nights and drinks at their bar.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for a date night or just a good cozy meal.
Went with a few friends and shared a bunch of plates including the roast chicken, steak, brussel sprouts, dates, & kale salad! Perfect amount of food for 5 girls. Also great cocktails!

Not sure what the hype is -- perhaps if ambiance is soooo much more important than food for you. The interior is cute and little italy-y with a lot of nooks and crannies. Came by for brunch and was very underwhelmed by the food, although the cocktails were great. With plenty of other brunch spots in the area, there are better options out there. Seems like a good place for big groups though. We got:- huevos rancheros 7/10: flavors were alright but i think it's super stingy to not have any other protein besides eggs. The dish also came out not very warm- burger 5/10: highly disappointing. It didn't help that the patty was undercooked. For the price of this i'd rather eat 3 big macs.

I wanted to love it, but why is everyone so nasty? And making it so very clear they wanted everyone out by the end of the night. Literally leaving the door open (20 degrees outside) and dragging garbage back and forth. Putting barstools up while people are still dining. The waitress had a bad attitude. Asked if anyone wanted another round and walked away without getting my friends order. The bartender too... pretentious. Beautiful place, bad vibes.

This place is a little bit hidden but it holds some good food. We had deviled eggs as appetizers and some of their bowls as our main dishes. The wine list is diverse enough and we found some good options for self poisoning. The service was good and the atmosphere was uniquely cool, with the exception of the dead animals on the walls.

Freeman's hosted our company holiday party and they did an amazing job. The location is unique (off an alley) and the decor is kind of like a modern barn (complete with animal heads on the wall). We had a variety of family style apps, entrees, and desserts to pass and everything was great. Cocktails were awesome too. Honestly don't have anything negative to say! If you're looking for a good private room experience for a group of 10 to 20, definitely put Freeman's on your short list to check out.
Be the first to ReplyEveryone comes to Freeman's for the picturesque alleyway
Everyone comes to Freeman's for the picturesque alleyway entrance. It's really cute. The place in general is nice, maybe even a little gimmicky. They have outdoor seating in the alley and the inside is dark with a vintage vibe. The food is nothing to rave about but nevertheless pretty good, although I've found it to be a bit inconsistent. The mac and cheese was a hit the last time I was there for brunch. Definitely somewhere to bring out of town visitors for drinks because it's something different.
Be the first to ReplyCompany holiday party in a private room of this hunting
Company holiday party in a private room of this hunting lodge/ restaurant at the end of Freeman's Alley (off Rivington) that is photo worthy and oddly did not open until 6pm (so don't think you can get there at 5:30 and get a drink before your reservation) but we trooped in- were seated in our taxidermy oriented room upstairs and Angela, our server explained the family style servings we were going to experience and took our drink orders. My Bell, Book, and Candle was mezcal based and delicious. Hubby had a sweeter drink / both delicious. The appetizers were delicious and extensive : hot artichoke dip with crisps, the best kale salad I've ever had, mussels and dish scraping five cheese macaroni. More wine and then family style tomahawk steak, salmon, pan roasted duck and wild mushroom faro. Also, the BEST Brussels sprouts ever!! We finished up with bananas foster and the best cup of coffee that made for a totally delicious evening. Want to try for brunch. Lots of cool atmosphere
Be the first to ReplySo I'm really not the type to leave a review for
So I'm really not the type to leave a review for restaurants but literally... I hosted a work holiday dinner here and the experience had room for LOTS of improvement. So get this; we made a reservation for 7pm over a week in advance and were so excited for the date to come around. We arrived 7 minutes late to our reservation which we were very apologetic for, but the Host & Hostess at the door from the moment we stepped in were being catty, dismissive, and just down right bullies. They were rolling their eyes, whispering things to each other, literally like mean girls in HS. All of the guests for our reservation finally arrive and I let them know we are ready to sit down. The hostess tells me that they're really busy, have lots of reservations, and that we needed to wait 10-15 mins longer - which keep in mind WE had a reservation and it was for 7:00pm and at this point it's like 7:30. I let the hostess know this for the third time and she tells me that even if she did seat us, that no one would come and help us for "a long time". Fast forward a few mins and she reluctantly lets us sit at our table. Our server was lovely, food was hearty, atmosphere was cute, but here's where it gets worse. Later in the dinner one of our other coworkers who thought they weren't going to make it stopped by to say hello, but was bullied by the two people at the host stand beforehand. The female host comes up to our table and tells us this "I heard you have a friend who just got here and I just wanted to let y'all know that she's not allowed to sit down. She can come say hi and that's it." But we had three extra chairs at our table so there was more than enough space for her with little to no effort from the staff. My boss tried to respond but the hostess immediately rolled her eyes, turns away and doesn't give us the chance. My boss walks up to the host stand to ask what's going on and they give her the cold shoulder. The host, hostess, AND the manager would not look at my boss, and when she asked if the final member of our party could simply sit and not order any food, they all looked at each other and finally agreed it would be ok. The late arriving coworker when she came to say hi looked obviously shook up from the interaction at the door and the rest of us are just so shocked and confused. Even though we were vibing and enjoying the food, the people at the host stand put a damper on our entire evening and ruined the entire experience for everyone attending. Also another thing is that our entire table works in the customer service industry so we know what it's like being in a fast paced atmosphere with a lot going on but this is just not okay. It's not cute to be mean
