Quintessential Neighborhood Gem
After a long day walking around the city, we were ready for a nice meal in one of the quiet neighborhood restaurants that SF is known for. Except we had difficulty locating one despite our explorations. Finally, we sat down at a pub and went to work on the internet, happily (for us), finding Gardenias. We could not have found a better spot. Quiet, beautiful with amazing staff (thank you Jeffrey from Williamstown, MA!) and delectable food, the evening was perfect. I am a vegetarian and particularly appreciated the care and creativity with which the Chef treated veggies. Don't miss the plum tart if it is still on the small and carefully curated menu. We hope to be back!

Finding a quiet restaurant is quite a challenge. Gardenias was a perfect place for our anniversary dinner. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the lighting was bright enough to read the menu while soft enough to be romantic. My wife had the ricotta ravioli (she took home two of the three large ravioli) and I had the long-cooked duck leg. Both meals were delicious. Service was excellent. Attentive without being intrusive. Start to finish we had a wonderful experience. We have several favorite restaurants in the Pacific Heights/Fillmore area and are delighted to add Gardenias to the list.

Wonderful dinner with co-workers last week!
All of our meals tasted wonderful and were nicely presented.
Our server was attentive and very helpful with suggestions for the table.
We shared a few appetizers and each ordered a main entrees plus finished with an amazing dessert.
Enjoyed the calm and quite environment of the restaurant.
Definitely will return when in Japantown!
Feels Like an Oasis
Gardenias is a lovely, quiet restaurant that feels far from the madding crowd on Fillmore. The food was fabulous, for carnivores and vegetarians alike. The service was excellent and the wine recommendation was superb, and reasonable. I would return in a heartbeat just to enjoy the pork served with all the fabulous seasonal summer vegetables!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, poor billing
The food here was exemplary, delicious and beautifully presented.
However, they did get one of our group’s entree order completely wrong, meaning we had to wait some minutes for it to be replaced. He was told his dessert would be complimentary yet when the check arrived it wasn’t. As I was treating my guests it was not appropriate to raise the matter but it was cynical or careless after a real mistake had been made.
If not for that, my review would have been glowing. My own food was all excellent
Awesome food and cozy atmosphere
Chelsea our server was excellent with her wine notes. Every dish we had was delicious and not your typical dishes. I highly recommend if you want dishes that are different in a cozy setting with a nice wine list and excellent service.
Be the first to ReplyQuite nice ......
We selected Gardenias as a quiet restaurant slightly away from the noise and bluster of Fillmore Street - 50 yards away!
It was different and, indeed essentially quieter than those nearby restaurants, other than the two ladies on the next table whose conversation we had no option of missing throughout the meal. So, perhaps the tables might have been spaced more optimally.
Service was good and the food also reasonable. I had the duck confit and my wife a risotto. We both felt that they were OK, but, given the price, nothing exceptional.
So generally OK but certainly not memorable.
Whole lot of yum
Cute, quiet and super quaint restaurant. Perfect for a small gathering and a really good menu. Definitely something for everyone.
The cheese platter, hummus, gnocchi, duck leg, and risotto we shared as a group was very nicely done. Super tasty and beautifully presented. I wish I took a photo, but was too busy devouring. This is definitely worth repeating over and over.
Surprisingly poor food
If you’ve ever read/watched Like Water For Chocolate, it’s like the chef was crying as he made the food.
They may have just been having a bad night (we’ve been here before and had good experiences) but our meal was surprisingly depressing. The soup was flavorless, the short rib was well cooked but also had no flavor. The dessert was so bad we sent it back. We were actually having a fun night with our friends but walked out depressed from a worse than mediocre eating experience.
Great dinner
I loved this place. Their menu is very well assembled and in our experience their plates are really well thought through. Flavors were matched very well as one would expect from a research on delighting the taste. I had short ribs, easy to go trivial with those: not at all. From starters through dessert it was a delightful night in a cozy, quite little restaurant in Japan Town. I'll be back when I am in town. One note of caution: this spot is not on the cheapest side. But, hey: it's SF and overall good value. I congratulated the Chef before walking back to my hotel... Happier than just an hour earlier. Thanks.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious, low noise level, a gem!
Many of the best restaurants in the city are deafening and exorbitantly priced and eating there is not a relaxing experience. Enter Gardenias. Locavore, interesting menu that changes with the best of the season. Now, it being Spring, they offered such delights as arugula and spring onion soup, or braised leeks with dijon vinaigrette, for example, plus fall-off-the-bone short ribs and to die for risotto. My friends and I choose this place every time we have something to celebrate because you can actually converse without shouting. Wisely chosen and varied wine list. Great staff. Open kitchen. Lovely interior. A++
