These pictures are from two separate dinners: Valentines tasting menu and a regular a la carte dinner. This place is a vegetarian heaven because the staff is very helpful for helping your party estimate how much food is good to order. The ambiance is also beautiful overlooking the water across Fort Mason and the restaurant is incredible spacious.

If you want to get scammed and eat mediocre food, this is the place! I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could. It disappointed in every aspect. We made a reservation for a birthday dinner and were hoping to have a good time but got scammed instead. I will talk about the food first and address the shady things the restaurant pulled after. The food came out lukewarm and the Laksa tasted like day old leftovers. The noodles were broken up in short pieces and stale (tasted like leftover pho that has soaked up all the broth and expanded) and the soup was room temperature. I thought it was a one off but multiple orders were also like this. They had a hard time modifying for someone who had an allergy. We didn't complain about any of this and let it slide. From the start of dinner, before we ordered, we asked the server if we could put drinks on one tab and food on the other, they said it wasn't a problem. At the end of our night, both bills were paid and we left the restaurant maybe an hour later after paying our bill. The next day, we saw the credit card statement increase by an extra $175+ (gratuity was already included in our bill). We couldn't call the restaurant to ask what the charge was about because their phone line defaults to voicemail. Left with no other choice, we had to drive all the way back there only to deal with the most rude and condescending manager, Inna. I've seen a handful of other customer reviews mentioning that they had issues with her. She explained that the restaurant forgot to bill us for certain drinks and that it was *our* fault we left before they could figure that out. Remind you, we left an HOUR after the bill was paid since we were still enjoying our drinks and dessert, so they had plenty of time. She also told us that they were doing us a favor by splitting the bill in the first place because they typically do not split bills (then why did the server tell us it wasn't a problem to begin with?). Again, very condescending. It is not the customer's fault that they didn't realize until a day later they didn't charge the correct amount. Had they gotten in contact with us and explained the situation, we would have been fine with paying extra, but to suddenly charge an extra $175+ on the credit card used to pay with no explanation? that is fraud. Her story changed about 3 times on why they made the unauthorized charge. We asked Inna for the itemized receipt that we signed before leaving the restaurant and that's when the games started. She didn't want to provide it for us and instead gave us the new receipt with the extra charges on it claiming that was our receipt, after politely asking again for the receipt that was paid and signed for that night, we sat at the front of the restaurant waiting for over an hour until she finally came out only to tell us it would take too long to find the original and didn't want us waiting (honestly I knew she wanted us to leave and drop it), she gave us her business card and said she'd email us with the receipt when she finds it. Guess what? She never got back to us, even after emailing her and leaving a voicemail at the restaurant. We had to file a dispute and get the director involved. It was an honest mistake the restaurant made when presenting the bill that night and a more expensive restaurant like Greens should have just accepted their mistake and not blame the customer for "leaving after signing their bill (an hour later)". Unbelievable!

I've been going to Greens for years and it still makes me happy every time I go. The menu has far more vegan options than the menu from when I first started eating here (deeply appreciated). This last vidiy was for our 25th anniversary. Our server Chloe took great care of us, brought us a little Prosecco to toast and made the evening very special for us. One wish for the future. Please bring back cookies to accompany tea! After a big dinner, a small sweet offering would be perfect. All our love!
Be the first to ReplyOf my 35 years on this planet this is the absolutely worst
Of my 35 years on this planet this is the absolutely worst service I have ever experienced. I came the evening of Wednesday 2/28 a little before 6 PM with a friend who was visiting and had never been to San Francisco before. We wanted drinks to watch the sunset and maybe order a plate or two share. I told the host (there were 2, seemed like one was training), that we were looking to have drinks only with maybe appetizers. That was possibly my mistake for saying that (I did not realize they did not have bar seating), and the host refused to put us at a normal table and instead told is to sit in a waiting area around that large wooden sculpture and order with the QR code. Menu was VERY limited, we would have preferred ordering from the real menu to share something rather than what was available with the QR code. We ordered 2 drinks, never were checked on or given water. One drink came about 25 minutes later only after I flagged someone down to check. They eventually brought one drink back and it was incorrect. At that point I told the host the problem, who insured me that the correct drink would be on the way - waited another 15 minutes without anything. Asked the host 2 more times (now 45 minutes without anything - everyone around at tables are being served and hearing shaking/cocktail making from the bar), and they ensure us ticket is in and will be a moment. After spending almost an hour without anything we ask them to take the cocktails off our QR tab and leave without having been served anything. Not sure what this was about... never had been so poorly treated. We both look young and maybe a our hair was a little disheveled from sight seeing/walking in the wind but we are both medical professionals and never have been refused to be served like this. This is not how a restaurant should be run. It's too bad as the restaurant came highly recommended from several friends, but I definitely would not be coming back and it's unfortunate that my friend who is not from here had such a poor experience.
Be the first to ReplyInstead of 7pm we were seated half an hour later.
It was especially frustrating because we rushed and hurried through the day in order to be there on time--because of their strict policy to give away your table when you're late! It was a holiday, so oh well, they are forgiven for that. They brought us free drinks while we were killing time, so, that was nice. Many couples came and were led to their tables right away. Others had to wait for a long time even though there were many empty tables. I didn't understand their logistics. When our table was finally ready, I gasped: instead of the main dining room which I booked, we were led to a separate room just big enough to fit in a table and four chairs. It was very chilly and just outright sad to sit there. There was an empty table outside this room in the main area, but, according to staff, the place was so 'completely booked', we couldn't sit there. This logic was beyond me. (1 star) Our waitress went above and beyond to serve us (5 stars) and it wasn't her fault that the creme brulee was liquid underneath the crust (2 stars). The food was good yet not really great (4 stars) and I feel the hay days of Greens are over. This was not a great experience. Overrated, IMO.
Be the first to ReplyI had absolutely despicable service.
To start with we were kept waiting to see our server for close to 10 minutes after we were seated. When our server finally arrived, he asked us if we had any questions about the menu. I informed him that I had food allergies, and he appeared unknowing of the menu, and annoyed with my questions. He was short tempered, and downright curt. He never came back to the table to check on us, until we were done with our meal. The service, by far was the worst that I've ever experienced, and I will never return to Greens.

Wonderful, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is cost, pricey restaurant. Also, the bathrooms are very institutional looking. Maybe CCSF can start to subsidize green restaurants that are vegan or vegetarian given climate change and the big dent they are making to help by keeping meat off the menu?

I have been coming to Greens since the 1990s, before I moved here back in 2001. I am hoping this review gets the attention of the Greens folks because it used to be on my top ten list of favorite restaurants. It is still a very good restaurant. Once upon a time, I was mesmerized by Greens dishes: How did they make all these vegetarian dishes pop in my mouth? It is not quite where I am right now. The dishes aren't quite as tantalizing, but they are still good. We ate at Greens a few months ago and I wondered what happened. It looks like there has been a big shift in the kitchen. The food is very good, but I remember the last visit having a forgettable menu. I miss the chocolate crinkle cookies that were sold at the front counter, too. Still, Greens has one of the most beautiful restaurant settings in the city. This, alone, is still a great reason to make a reservation. Service is still the same, which has always been from Good to Excellent. I still recommend this restaurant. It is still a very good restaurant. I don't think I would add it to the Must Go List to visitors unless they either want a vegetarian restaurant experience or they want a beautiful scenic setting (Or both). I used to tell meat-eaters and vegetarians, alike, that they need to go here. I don't think it would be a top recommendation from me, for meat-eaters today because they would be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyOverall, the experience was meh.
Reservation at 8:15, got sat at 8:23. When we did, the table had crumbs and spilled water on it. Neither of which are a huge deal, but they started on the wrong foot. That was followed by mediocre appetizers (peaches and papusas). Waitress was great, as was the view, and the entrees were good, but by then, it was too late. Wasn't worth the $100 price tag.
Be the first to ReplyWe ordered their potato cauliflower pizza, butternut squash
We ordered their potato cauliflower pizza, butternut squash soup, Japanese pancake, and beet salad. Food was delicious, I would highly recommend the early grey tea cake, it was delightful! I really enjoyed their almond and grapefruit mocktail as well, tastes fresh and floral. The ambiance is very urban with a touch of upscale. Great for small groups or date night. Will definitely come back to try their other seasonal menus.
Be the first to ReplyWe have come to greens many times for celebrations.
We came here first to celebrate my nephew's birth: we had a reservation at the restaurant for a part of 3. I dropped of my mother and sister at the point closest to the restaurant since my mother has terrible arthritis and cannot walk. My sister asked to be seated before I parked the car and came explaining that the my mother had an arthritis. The manager of the front desk refused to seat us even though I was barely a minute away and my mother has a disability. We had such an excellent server. But the meeting at first is such an shame. This has tarnished for me what were very fond memories.

An utter disappointment - We were looking forward to celebrate in one of the few upscale plant-based restaurant that SF has to offer. Sad, but true there is really nothing in this place that would measure up to expectations of fine dining. For a &100 pp experience one would expect some sort of style, but this place simply has none. From start to finish we did not feel welcome. Once seated we were rushed through our dishes and presented with the bill while still chewing. Quality of the food mediocre at best, cocktails an uninspired disaster (at least they should nail this one, we are in SF after all). Wine pairings absent. Overall, this is a Fort Mason Tourist trap - Stay away
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for vegetarian/vegan food.
Visited on a Saturday afternoon for brunch. My order:- mimosa - yum!- smoked cheddar and chive biscuits - very good- coconut curry spinach soup - good- pear and goat cheese tartine - yum!- sweet potato papusas - yum!- orange chocolate ganache tart - goodOverall, the place deserves 5/5 for food. Every dish was very flavorful and thoughtfully crafted. However, the service was average as the servers were not too attentive. Having said that, the food was so good that I would visit again to try out the dinner options. :)

It was my first time on a first date. The Polenta Mushroom was amazing. The this post is from November 25,2022. The ambience was perfect with a view of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge.

I came here with some family who wanted vegetarian food with fun ambience. Greens did not disappoint!Greens is a popular spot for good reason. There are great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the restaurant was buzzing with energy. We started with the crispy polenta cake. This dish was a standout for me - the polenta was nicely cooked and had a crispy exterior that gave way to a creamy, flavorful interior. The accompanying tomato sauce was bright and tangy, with just the right amount of acidity to cut through the richness of the polenta. The addition of fresh herbs and grated parmesan cheese brought the dish together well. For my main I had the chickpea and artichoke stew. This hearty dish was full of complex flavors and textures. The chickpeas were cooked to perfection, with a tender yet firm bite, and the artichokes added a delightful earthiness to the stew. The broth was rich and savory, with just a hint of spice that lingered on the palate. This dish was the perfect comfort food on a chilly day.I also decided to try the hibiscus iced tea. This refreshing beverage was the perfect complement to my meal - it was slightly tart, with just a hint of sweetness, and had a beautiful deep pink color. I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet, and the hibiscus flavor was distinct without being overpowering. Finally, for dessert, we ordered the Meyer lemon tart. The filling was creamy and smooth, with a bright, zesty lemon flavor that wasn't too sweet. The crust was buttery and flaky, with just the right amount of crunch. The tart was topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of candied lemon peel, which added just the right amount of sweetness and texture to the dish.Overall, Greens Restaurant was a fantastic dining experience. The food was inventive, flavorful, and beautifully presented, and the atmosphere was lively and inviting.

The cuisine at Greens continues to be outstanding! CHEF KATIE, YOU ROCK! The menu is creative, very well thought-out, and ever-changing based on the seasons. True vegetarian comfort food with an inventive flair! That's why Greens is our go-to restaurant every time we are in town. There's always something new and exciting to try--it's hard to decide--so we order a few dishes to share. The service is friendly and attentive, the sunset over the bay is breathtaking. Our entire family will be visiting San Francisco in May, and we will definitely be dining at Greens several times while we are there. Can't wait!
Be the first to ReplyNo longer fine dining.
Current "executive chef" is a girl who got promoted out of their kitchen to help pivot them to takeout during lockdown, and it REALLY shows. Last night we ordered the "Escarole & Fagioli Pasta", and got served shell pasta with bland boiled beans, no sauce, and pre-grated parmesan. As in the starch-covered little parmesan sticks like you buy in a tub at Costco. It was so bland that I ended up asking for more (pre-grated, tub) parmesan. In the past they'd be serving thoughtfully considered house-made ravioli with farm-to-table local cheese. This however is the sort of dish you'd get from a food delivery subscription on an off-night. If I tried cooking dinner and my pasta came out like this, I'd honestly be embarassed. We also ordered the Paprikash Stew and while it wasn't as demoralizing as the pasta, it was super basic and unelevated. Like exactly the kind of canned tomatoes + stock + chopped vege stew I'd chuck into my Instapot during the pandemic, with a giant scoop of basmati rice and too much pickled kale on the side. Like the kind of dish you find at the bottom of a meat menu as the "Vegetarian option" for the sake of having an option.Views are still amazing--the best in the city, a great way to impress out-of-towners, and probably the only reason to eat here. Service is ok, but not attentive like fine dining or even regular neighborhood restaurants. SF is one of the food capitols of the world and the baseline level of creativity quality at most ordinary restaurants out here is fantastic. It's particularly disappointing to encounter this level of cafeteria food mediocrity at a spot that used to be so special.

2 of 3 of our guests emailed and called ahead to ask for a low salt diet for one guest and were well-assured both via email and by phone that that would be no problem, but once there, it was suddenly impossible. They may have been shocked but we just up and left. It was a good restaurant a long time ago but I can't say that now since we were forced to leave so we didn't even eat there. No recommendation for the false info they gave us!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is amazing but the ambience of the whole
The food is amazing but the ambience of the whole restaurant and waterside view makes it that much better. Love their pasta and shakshouka best. Good quality food and portions are decent. Even non vegetarians love it!
Be the first to ReplyWe had our wedding in the Bay Room at Greens last week.
The team at Greens could not have been more helpful in organizing all parts of the event from table configuration and choice of napkins and tablecloths through to menu options. Greens' in-house sommelier helped with wine and welcome cocktail selections and their pastry chef created two spectacular looking and delicious tasting cakes. The food and location were amazing as expected. Sierra the event coordinator was very flexible, giving us space to make our own decisions but stepping in when she saw we needed help. While all the other venues we spoke started every off every conversation by telling us what they couldn't do, Greens accommodated all our needs without fuss or drama. The staff at Greens made our day very special and I would recommend Greens for any event.

I have been to greens a few times before and the food is always exceptional. I really enjoyed the view from the restaurant both in the morning and at night. The service was absolutely wonderful as well - our waitress was so kind and funny and really helpful when it came to picking what we wanted to eat. The pasta was delicious and the vada was also very good with the chutney.
Be the first to ReplyIt's our Go To place in the City.
The service is always on point as well as the food. Just make sure to make reservations ahead of time if you want to sit inside. Outside seating is nice as well however, the views are better inside.
Be the first to ReplyIf you have friends or family who are vegetarian or you
If you have friends or family who are vegetarian or you feel like celebrating with some delicious veggies, this restaurant is going to be a new hot spot for you! However, for those who have lived in SF for a minute or are locals, this restaurant fafor putting veggies on the map BEFORE it was a trend. In 1979 Greens changed the way vegetarian food was appreciated and eaten in America, that's right, not just in San Francisco. How did this journey begin? Well the origin story of this culinary destination started as the San Francisco Zen Center. It allowed Buddhist students to extend their practice into a workplace setting and the practice of compassion is still at the heart of Greens today. On top of leading the vegetarian movement, this restaurant has also paved a way for female chefs in the industry, such as Annie Somerville, Denise st. Ong, and Katie Reicher. So while you're visiting Fort Mason, wall through the doors of Greens and transport yourself to a place of wonder and excitement. Create food memories,Isabelle Pinard
