This place was highly recommended and it lived up to its standard. The ambiance was astonishing. I made a reservation on Thursday for Saturday at 6:30 pm. Making reservations was easy. We trickled in a bit early the staff were friendly and they were able to seat us quickly. I ordered the gunpowder chaat, egg curry masala, white rice, and kerala beef pepper fry. The food was flavorful it was a good mix of different flavors and spices. The plates are shareable, so we definitely had the right amount of food for two people with a moderate appetite. I ordered a margarita and I was very impressed. My favorite was the gunpowder chaat. When in London, I'll definitely come back and try the other half of the menu. By the way, Dress casual, perfect for a date night in SoHo!

Loved this little place off Commercial St in Whitechapel/Spitalfields. TINY place and there were six of us, so was possibly a no go, but they figured out how to make it work. Was totally worth it. Would call this elevated Indian fare with a contemporary flare. Intentionally use "flare" because some of the dishes are fun and a bit of a surprise, but nothing that jumps the shark. To be honest, some of these dishes were more inventive, more flavorful, and better presented than some of the "high-end" Indian places in town (ahem, Kanishka). Half of us were vegetarian, so we mostly ordered veggie dishes. I am not a vegetarian but would have been 100% satisfied with just those dishes. Kale, aubergine and goat cheese salad - so good we ordered a second batch. Mustard broccoli, egg curry, okra fries, masala dosa - all generous portions and thoroughly satisfying. We also had the softshell crab, sea bass, and venison "doughnut" - it was more like a scotch egg, with an spicy chutney that was oh so good. They dont serve bread, but rice was good and also highly recommend the raita, which was almost like a labneh - think and tangy and a great compliment to some of the spicy dishes. Nice selection of beers and wines by the glass that compliment the food. A highlight of this trip to London - will definitely be back.

Was here 15 minutes after they opened and with 2 persons already seated they wanted to put us on hold for 90 minutes. It was recommended by a friend who travels frequently and I did not want to "name drop" as it is only slightly more rude than not providing us a table.
Be the first to ReplyGunpowder had been on my list for London for a while.
This review is for their Greek Street location. We decided to grab dinner here before going to an event at Soho House as it was around the corner. It's a small space but lively. We were seated exactly at the time of our reservation. We made same day reservations just hours before on a Saturday night. We ordered the "Festive Vegetarian Feast" which included: Gunpowder Chaat. Norfolk. Potatoes (Cannot go wrong with this chaat, delicious!) Kale, Bhuna Aubergine with Goat Cheese Salad ( I would pass on this if we had the option, fried kale was good & unique but nothing really held the salad together) Bengali Beet Root Croquettes (these were a favorite, texture and flavor 5/5) Grilled Artichoke Heart in Red Pepper Masala (THIS was the combination I never knew I needed in my life. Grilled artichoke hearts and masala made a unique combination) Mustard Malai Broccoli ( Roasted broccoli with a malai curry, I also never thought this combo would go great together until we tried it) Egg Curry Masala (Delicious, however a bit too spicy for my palate) Saag with Tandoori Paneer (Thick pieces of tandoori paneer over a bed of classic saag) Steamed Rice (perfectly cooked basmati rice) We wrapped up with the Triple Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream and coffee. This was a LOT of food for 2 people but we wanted to try all the different items. Service was great. They even brought a candle out with the cake as we celebrated a graduation dinner. Would definitely come back next time I'm in London!
Be the first to ReplyThe best Indian food I have.
Must try their lamb and shrimps. May need reservations because the place is small and we got lucky for walk in

Gunpowder is a cozy, little Indian restaurant around Spital Fields. It's so unassuming, you'd never know they were serving such delicious food! I had the Egg Curry Masala and Spicy Venison and Vermicelli Donut. And the bread pudding for dessert was the best part! We also came in 20 minutes before the kitchen closed and still got friendly, attentive (quick) service!

A delightfully intimate restaurant serving Indian-inspired cuisine and certainly a contender for one of the best Indian restaurants in London. Between the two of us, we ordered four Small Plates and one Sharing Plate. All dishes contained amazing flavor and spice, with exceptional highlights including the Gunpowder Chaat and the Seabass Paturi Maach (steamed mustard fish). Service is quite attentive and friendly here - the space is small anyway, with the restaurant seating a maximum of 20 people. It can get pretty cozy, so perhaps not a suitable place for groups of more than 4, but a wonderful spot for date night.
Be the first to ReplyCrazy good food.
The service was also excellent. The vermicelli doughnut is a must try.

Tiny little spot serving elevated Indian cuisine! Everything is small shareable plates, so be sure you come ready to order several things to pass. The dishes can comfortable be be split between 2, but for larger groups you'll want to order and extra of each item. Standout items for me were the tandoori chicken chop, porzhi okra fries, and mustard sea bass. Each item has a distinct pop of flavor. The only piece I didn't enjoy was the rum bread pudding - might be better with the extra shot of rum they offer. We rocked up at 8:30 and they had a few tables for two available for walk ins; however, it was a Monday night so I'd make a reservation if you're set on dining here. There's only about 15 small tables in general. Service is quick and efficient, with all of the food arriving within 15-20 minutes. Things did slow down at the end, if they always made sure we had anything we needed.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, friendly attentive service and lovely vibe.
Can't recommend this spot enough!
Be the first to ReplyIt is a Modern Indian cuisine.
The spices are full force. No hot drinks or lassi. The portions are small/tapas style and give opportunity to sample many items

My grandson and I had a delicious meal and the food and service were excellent. The location was very convenient to our hotel, The Dixon.
Be the first to ReplyA little off the beaten path but well worth the trip.
A fusion of many different Indian cuisines with just the right amount of spice and heat.
Be the first to ReplyNo doubt one of the best Indian restaurants in London.
The place is really small, so be sure to have reservations. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

Whoever suggested the lamb chops at this place knows their cuisine well. I'm falling short of words to describe the taste but I'll give it a shot. Perfectly marinated, cooked to its tenderness, slightly roasted to bring out the charcoal-fumed flavor, and artistically decorated to the host's likeness. It's a small joint but the interior is nicely done, gives it a rustic feel. Would love to visit this place again and try rest of the menu.

one word: THE LAMB CHOPS!!! Everything was so good, so spicy (in a great way, and I don't usually eat spicy food), and so fresh. I 100% recommend the lamb chops - to die for. But everything on the menu is good.

The food is good but the space is to tight you can not enjoy it. Not cheap not expensive. Service is attentive. There are not chairs, a kind of sofa against the wall and stools.

If you want to have dinner here, you need to come in the afternoon and put your name on the list. You'll receive a link via text that lets you track the number of parties ahead of you. While this is a great idea in theory, it's sadly not very accurate in reality, as we still had to wait another 45mins when there was just 1 more party ahead of us. HOWEVER, the food is hands down amazing. I've tried almost all dishes now, and there's only one that I'm not a fan of (the one with eggs). The lamb was one of the best I've ever had, same goes for the aloo chat (a must here). If you have some time on your hands, and if you're patient when you're hungry, please definitely go! Only advice: try not to get the table right by the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplySmall place.
Actually, very small place. But the cooks in the kitchen crank out some delicious food. The Kerala Beef was awesome. The Aloo Chat, albeit non-traditional was very tasty. Get some rice and you're good to go. Get a beer - the drinks are too small in portion.

One of the most unusual restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of eating in. First, was looking to try an Indian place on Brick Lane but we had landed a couple of hours earlier, went for a beer at the 10 Bells and this was close and had good reviews.Second, very small, very cramped, and just coming from the USA we felt like we were seated on top of each other, just get use to it. Third, the food was eclectic. Smaller plates, encouraged to get 2-3 per person. My opinion 2 per person is better. We had the fried okra - first couple were excellent but as you got down farther in the bowl the saltier they got. Curried Eggs - great flavor, be prepared they are spicer than most British curry. Aloo Chat - very flavorful, mild potato dish that was really enjoyable. Palak Panner - wonderful but spicy. Eggplant something or other, that was very good but put me over the top in terms of quantity.Fourth - the service was fantastic and friendlyFifth - wine list is very limited but there was a chateau Neuf de pape that was excellent. All vegetarian so be prepared. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyWe were highly impressed by London's food scene.
The award for quirkiest dishes would have to go to St. John's food and wine (I ate a pigeon), but otherwise, Gunpowder wins all of the other superlatives. Its food was phenomenal, the preparation unique, the space trendy and intimate, and the service warm.I've read that the wait can be substantial. We arrived on a Saturday at 18:00, although seats were available at that time, we chose to put our names on a text waitlist for 19:00. We were seated immediately upon our return, and it looked like other arriving groups didn't face too much of a wait. Note that the space is small, so this is a better venue for a date or small groups. We tried the following:-Rasam ke bomb: a nice little Instagram-friendly appetizer and fully unique, and thus a bit difficult to describe. It's essentially a shot of tamarind-based soup, capped off by a crispy ball filled with potato. I've seen it described as dosa-like, but the batter is crispier than the dosas I've tried. In any case, eat/slurp these two elements together- a bite of the ball with a bit of the soup. Voila.-Spicy venison and vermicelli Doughnut: a fun presentation: looks like a furry doughnut that might be eaten on some distant planet or by spongebob squarepants. A thin layer of fried vermicelli envelopes tender venison, which we dunked into a spicy tamarind (I think?) sauce. This was definitely the spiciest dish of everything we tried. Also, I'm rather sure this marks my first time trying venison as part of Indian cuisine.-Maa's kishmiri lamb chops: more tender meat, delicately wrapped in a tandoori char, with a green mint chutney type of sauce. Very delicious. -Sea bass paturi maach: this was lightly flavored with mustard seed and a gentle mustard sauce, which was really a genius preparation, because it allows the beautiful flavor of the sea bass to shine. Served in a banana leaf. We also had a gorgeous glass of red wine from the Cotes-du-Rhône, which more than held its own against these bold flavors. One gripe: our water was served lukewarm. (I'm aware this may be a cultural difference, but I really find it unpleasant.)
Be the first to ReplyThis was our by far our favorite place in London.
We meant to go somewhere else and thought we ended up at the right place. What a pleasant surprise! This place was outstanding, each food item was perfectly made and the employees that work here made it so much better which I thought was impossible. We showed up at the right moment and got a seat. There are limited seats in the restaurant which makes it even better for the atmosphere. We ended up getting more food just because it was amazing. If I'm ever back in London, I'll definitely going to stop by again just to taste excellence.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the best new Indian cuisine in London.
Hands down. Small and loud, but the menu is a joy. Everything bursts with flavour, nothing is too rich or too hot. It's perfect. Modern twists on tired Indian staples, and modern classics using traditional spices. Get everything.
