Museum highlighting the history and lives of women divers in Jeju
This museum pays homage to the women divers of Jeju. Itโs a small museum. You start with a 10 minute video presentation of what the women divers do and some basic history Then you can visit all the exhibits. Itโs not a big museum and can easily see most of the exhibits in 1 hour. Unlike looking at a historical site, this museum highlights and pays homage to the human aspect of these incredible women. A very enjoyable and educational experience.

Learned a lot about the daily lives of the Haenyeo and the history. Lots of information in English and you can ask the front desk to play an informative movie about the Haenyeo in English as well. Find a Haenyeo restaurant nearby to round out the experience.

This was a stop on the East Jeju Island tour. I am so glad it was included because I learned about the Haenyeo divers from (yes, I'll admit it--- K-dramas!) I was fascinated by the history and if you have time, if not on a tour, please stop by to visit and learn about these remarkable women and the numbers are dwindling (now just 72?). Well worth the visit.

It was a good place to know the history of women divers in Korea. For foreigners, it was something new about the Korean culture that we got to know. There was a AV show for 15 minutes followed by looking around the pictures.

Haenyeo are incredible women and the museum gives a great idea of their history, life and fights. It is very interesting to learn about those women : a real community, strong because they are together despite a very hard life, diving to feed their families and fighting for their island and tradition

Haenyeo Museum which is dedicated to the female sea divers of Jeju was an excellent museum about the matriarchal culture of Jeju that used to exist. Despite the large building that houses the museum, there isnโt that much on display. However, visitors get an idea about the amount of responsibilities the typical haenyeos had, basically raising their children (some dived until the day before their children were born) and running the family finances while going out diving everyday. The donated artifacts on displays were interesting but the information about the lives of haenyeos was fascinating.

I would recommend that you read the book โThe Island of Sea Womenโ by Lisa See before visiting the museum. I felt an emotional connection to the museum, the observatory and the grounds around the area, primarily because I had some background knowledge. The museum is well laid out and interesting. Do take the time to watch the video on the main floor before going through the exhibits. If you are there around 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. you may be able to see the women divers from the observatory on the 3rd floor. Getting there: we were on a cruise ship and took a taxi from the ship terminal in Jeju City. It took about an hour and was a very scenic drive. Our taxi driver gave us an hour to tour the museum and grounds and then dropped us off by the main market area in downtown Jeju City. It was under $100 for four people in a taxi.

A great museum well set out, very informative. Theres a short film, in English or Korean. Then a self directed tour of museum. Exhibits are well laid out with English translations. I would love to have had a translation of the interviews with the Haenyeo "women of the sea". There is also a Haenyeo trail from the museum, taking in some of the traditional places the women divers used including the Bulteoks. You would need quite a lot of time to do both museum, park, and trail.
