The bell has tolled
25 dollars is a lot to pay for a single drink. Even if you only hang out in the super luxe bars of New York and the Côte d’Azur I hope that all reasonable people can agree that 25 dollars…. for …. one… drink…. Is a lot. I am prepared to pay 25 dollars for a drink. Occasionally only, to be clear, for fear of penury. I prefer paying 6 dollars. But yes I am prepared to pay 25 dollars in the right circumstances. In return, I am expecting a great drink, excellent service, a fine and weighty glass, beautiful surroundings and perhaps some history. So Dukes in London, The Writers Bar in Singapore, the beautiful Charles H in Seoul. They tick all of these boxes. I love them all. And I am happy to pay for the privilege. I have been to Venice a fair bit and never been tempted to visit Harry’s Bar. Word was it did not justify these kinds of costs. Hemingway may have liked it just after the war, but the world has moved on since then. It was now just a tourist trap for the foolish and unwary. In a moment of weakness this week, on my way to dinner, walking past the door to Harry’s I succumbed. How bad could it be I thought to myself? It seems busy. The people in there didn’t all look like tourists; perhaps I had this wrong…. That moment of weakness was a mistake. This was apocalyptically bad. 52 dollars for two gin and tonics…. Deep breath … Gin. And. Tonic. Not some labour intensive, crushed artisan cocktail involving obscure aromatics and the knees of virgins…. But a gin and tonic. Not a choice of gins either. And I had to pour the tonic myself. Out of a can. That I had to open. Into …. What… not some chunky lead crystal glass that made me feel like a Bond villain….but rather the kind of dishwasher safe glasses petrol stations used to give away for free. In a room badly in need of a lick of paint, with all the decorative flair of a Warsaw Pact youth hostel (what is this colour?), tables jammed in like pins in a bowling alley - and guests bounced around nearly as much. And service as ice cool as … well I don’t know … but a smile from the staff required something more from me clearly. These are not so much first world problems as super first world problems. But we all get to choose how to spend our money. And my strong, strong recommendation is not to spend your money (or anyone else’s) in Harry’s Bar.
Be the first to ReplyI’m still thirsty!
I love visiting legendary establishments and have no qualms about paying over the odds for good food or drink. BUT I don’t like being ripped off. 24Euros for a whiskey sour that was smaller than a breakfast juice glass. Wanted to stop in for a cool refreshing drink but this experience barely wet my lips. Get a grip Harry’s Bar and stop ripping people off.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth the $$$
We came here expecting the counterpart of Harry’s Bar in Paris and were sorely disappointed. I’m sure there’s some important/historical meaning behind this bar and the Bellini’s they kept serving but that’s not what we were here for. The ambiance was flat, there was no music, the tables were low, it was overcrowded and ridiculously overpriced. The average drink price was €24 when you can get cocktails in any bar for 1/4 of the price. Not to mention, the drink was the size of a sippy cup. Again, I’m sure there’s a reason many people come to this bar, but if you’re looking for the Venetian Harry’s from Paris or just to have an apperitivo before dinner, I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Be the first to ReplyA lot of Hype but not a lot of room
Popped in for a Bellini just to experience it as was told it’s a must do place. It was incredibly busy (but it was a Saturday afternoon) but managed to get a table fairly quickly. Had a Bellini each and left. It was a nice Bellini but as mentioned by many it was very pricey. As it was a special occasion we just accepted it. It was crowded but there are a lot of staff so food and drinks arrive very quickly. Was it as special as I thought it would be? No.
Be the first to ReplyRude & ignorant
Determined to visit Harry’s Bar myself & four friends left a wonderful restaurant and wound our way to this ‘iconic’ spot only to come face to face with a deluge of ignorance & rudeness. Almost empty and pretty dinghy, we didn’t get one smile from the staff & were told we could only sit at the bar for our €24 drink! Understandable as we weren’t eating but a tad confusing as the place was empty! It took us less than two minutes to agree that no, we weren’t spending our money here & not because of the price but because of the blatant rudeness of the staff. Awful experience. Ignorant beyond belief.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated and Overcrowded
We arrived for lunch today without a reservation and were directed to one of only two tables available. Both tables were in the middle of an already overcrowded seating area. The restaurant was extremely hot and as we perused the menu we were constantly being bumped into by the waiting staff who were having to squeeze by the overcrowded tables. Needless to say we decided not to dine here ! We found a fabulous local restaurant which was far more appealing and comfortable with exceptional service and a very local clientele.

Be the first to ReplyBucket list place to see but underwhelmming
Very underwhelmed by Harry's bar. I think it was incredible back in the day, but we were disappointed, but it is a bucket list thing to do, a quick drink and leave is all you need but it isnt easy on the wallet.
Be the first to ReplyGo get your Harry treatment
I think my experience will be the same as the rest of us “plebs” who dare to visited this establishment. If you ever want to made to feel less worthy and like a complete and utter low life regardless of your efforts in life to visit a place... Go to Harry’s bar! So this is the birthplace of the Bellini cocktail. Sound good right? So unless you are an A-list celebrity or a world famous billionaire, this will be your experience... You walk in, get looked up and down by the guy at the door who has a slight expression of smelling something foul, you find a seat on a cramped seat, admire the decor that resembles a 1970’s police station, order your €22 Bellini in a very small glass. A half hearted, disinterested look up and down from the bar man until you swallow your 100ml of below average, carton peach juice and standard Prosecco until you pretty much want to get out as quick as possible. That is it. Enjoy

So your in venice ,its on your doorstep so hey why not visit the famous Harrys Bar What a disappointment, shabby decor.,fully of stuffy clients who should know better.Surly miserable staff, pompous is one word to describe them .Overpriced drinks lack of atmosphere. Please do not make my mistake keep your money and go elsewhere
Be the first to ReplySave yourself the visit, drink a shop bought Bellini and stare at a photo of the bar, you’ll get a less attitude
Overpriced and unwelcoming From the moment we walked into the bar, we were looked down on and clearly judged by the head bar person in his white tux…. For that reason I made a point of staying and buying an overpriced drink… my husband and I are super friendly, well dressed and polite and we felt like scum of the earth. We asked for certain drinks and got a blunt and rude no, only cocktails.. Then when a regular came in he was given the exact drinks we asked for… what a joke… don’t bother wasting your time or money on this place, the staff have no personality and are quite frankly rude and unwelcoming if your face doesn’t fit or you wreak of cash! It’s boring as hell and overpriced… spend your hard earned money in the local Spar and buy a bottle of pre-made Bellini to drink on a bench and it will taste the same without the attitude and judgement.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t Bother Going
Overpriced, overrated and don’t bother going. Like being in a plain front room with no atmosphere or interesting decor. Has a couple of drinks with a bowl of olives which were okay but nothing special. Best thing about the place was the toilets!
Be the first to ReplyOver priced and extremely rude staff
We visited the famous Harrys bar, and it was on our list of places we wanted to visit while in Venice, and to be completely honest myself and the other members of our party thought this place is well and truly overpriced and over rated for what you get. The restaurant /bar itself is very small and cramped, I found the staff extremely rude, when we asked for a drinks menu the waiter slammed it down onto the counter and then when we asked for a drink that was on the menu he shouted 'we don't do that drink', when we pointed the drink out to him on the menu he snatched it from the counter and screwed it up and said 'wrong menu it's this one' and slapped it down. I know they were very busy, but this isn't how to treat paying customer's, we had a round of drinks then left which cost us about 155 euros for 6 drinks. We would of them rather of said to us that they were far too busy and to come back later. My advice go stand outside the door and have a photo taken, then go have a Bellini somewhere else, it'll be far cheaper.

Friendly staff but 44 euro for 2 Bellinis was way overpriced and the drinks weren’t served cold. Felt it was overrated
Be the first to ReplySo fun
Harry’s bar has a reputition of being a big fat tourist trap. The Bellini was only 45 big buckeroos. And I had 6 martinis because they were soo enjoy!! I’m writing this review right when I got home because it was sups great. Our waiter said that life was like life was like life was. So wise. That young man was so nice I hope I see him again. Maybe next time he will come to Kansas to sea me? Anyway sips recommended!
Be the first to Replyfirst time at Cipriani's in Venice
Classic old style Cipriani restaurant its the beauty, with attentive and friendly staff, refined and excellent quality of food and generous portions. The first courses are delicious and the desserts are excellent. What I need to say more .. we'll see next time.
Be the first to ReplyOnly name
Only name and fame. You don’t get what you pay. Quality and taste under some small restaurants where price is much much lower. Drinks very expensive. Bad relationship quality-price. View does not worthy for what you pay
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced average food
Overpriced poor service. The food is average at best Service hurried. Waiters seem overwhelmed and unhappy

Be the first to ReplyBellini Blues
first time in venice so i had to visit. So disappointed - small bar area that was hot and tired looking not old and charming glamour as you would imagine. a big Part of the extortionate prices should be the service and atmosphere. venice is expensive we know but everywhere else felt worth it. This place isn’t - take your picture outside and go and spend your €100 round the corner in the Florian. Beautiful setting, fantastic staff and views across St Marks that i’m still thinking about ❤️
Be the first to ReplyTourist trap - the holy triumverate of terrible food, service and ambience at insane prices!
Looking at the reviews, I can say one thing: the people who rave about seem to need to justify the ridiculous amounts they have spent. Our family loves quality - places, for example, like the Wolseley in London which manage to be an "institution" and still deliver high quality and fantastic service. Harry's bar managed to do neither and still charged about 10 times as much.
We went in the height of summer - it was relatively empty. The carpets were worn, the loos disgustingly dirty, the staff had dirty crumpled uniforms on - wasn't sure if that was the "charm" - but there are plenty of restaurants like that all over Europe that don't look worn - this looked decidedly worn.
The prices for simple pasta dishes were north of 50 euros - the Bellini when it did come was WARM and sour. Absolutely disgusting.
Our family of five - three small kids eating not much and my husband and I with just main courses racked up a bill north of 300 Euros. It was eye-watering. The service was passable but it looked like a lot of people were milling about doing nothing.
Certainly a restaurant trading on their past glory. There are better views from the terraces of several hotels rather than this place.
I have had better Venetian food in our local italian restaurant in Chelsea which is (and I only discovered this recently) entirely owned and operated by Portuguese!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! TOURIST TRAP!
Only go if you want the experience
I finally visited Harry's Bar. I could give it 1 star or 5, depending on the perspective. On the one hand, it's an overpriced tourist trap trading off past glories of famous people whose experience of the establishment was probably different to ours today. On the other, it is located where it is located in the city called Venice, so they have a certain license to "enhance" their prices. That said, I still believe they charge far too much for what ends up on the plate or in the glass. My companion and I sat upstairs, and soon fell into people watching people watching us. We ordered a Bellini and a Montgomery. I had to remind the staff that that drinks were taking their time, twice, and they finally arrived with our food. Both drinks were well made and exquisite. However, the Bellini could have been more generous and the Montgomery could have been served in a more elegant glass than a non-descript old fashioned glass. I don't think they're worth 22 euros each, but then again I've paid the same at the American Bar at the Savoy in London: it goes with the territory. The two main dishes we ordered were above average, but most other establishments would not warrant the price of 65 and 75 euros respectively. The most "cost-effective" way to see Harry's Bar would be to wait until Covid restrictions lift and just try and walk in and take a look around withour ordering a thing. Failing that, order a cocktail, take it all in, and exit. But for fans of Hemingway and all others who engaged in revelry here and unwittingly provided the current management with the cheek to charge what they do, the only way is to take the plunge and try to enjoy the experience. I'm glad I went, but I won't be back.
