We have been going here for 30 years.
The omakase is outstanding and a relative bargain. They have a garden too.

When I first discovered the magic of Japanese cuisine, I was in high school. Hasaki is a Japanese institution of the East Village, the last samurai standing after the sad recent downfall of beloved familiar homes like Yokocho, Panya and Sunrise. The menu was once vibrant--featuring two delicious versions of nabe. Seasonal specialties prepared in regional distinctions. The sushi was, of course, impeccable. The tempura was a delight. I always loved to order a plate of it as an appetizer, the quality was so perfect. But all that is gone. Ambience is central to enjoying good quality Japanese food. That is not to say that a jovial izakaya filled with cigarette smoke and outdated music isn't as close to perfection as it can get but for Hasaki-who prides itself on an authentic, high-quality-cuisine-that element is central. Stepping down into the subterranean space of Hasaki from the soiled, noisy, college-student chattered air of the Lower East aside, you enter a space of blissful tranquility. A calm, surgically clean, perfectly arranged dining area where one expects the food to arrive on your plate like the work of art it. The ambience is still there--a removal, a respite from the grunge of NYC streets. But the menu has been sadly pared down to its bare minimum. Gone is the tempura. Gone is the nabe. Gone is the teishoku twilight dinner for a reasonable price. Gone is the seasonal special. Just overpriced sushi remains. And while the quality is still high, I should not feel like my fish had been sliced straight out of the freezer. Ice cold fish atop loose, slippery, stained sushi rice is not worth the price tag. How am I meant to pick it up with my chopsticks if it keeps falling apart? And worse, a chef accidentally dropped an object from behind the sushi bar with a loud flatter, breaking the peaceful ambience which was the only good thing about Hasaki worth its price. No one even apologized. I hope this experience is just a reflection of a reduced summer menu and that their original vibrant and varied menu will return in the Fall. That would be worth the price tag. My memories of Hasaki are too fond to shake off. I have always bragged about Hasaki and taken newcomers to Japanese cuisine there to experience all the greatness of Japanese culture and food. I want to do so again but this last experience was very disappointing. Please reawaken, Hasaki.
Be the first to ReplyI love this restaurant! Best sushi, and the seaweed salad
I love this restaurant! Best sushi, and the seaweed salad is out of this world delicious. The staff is kind and they have very good service, a nice ambiance. I have referred several people to Hasaki over the years and they always tell me later how it is now one of their top 5 favorite restaurants in NYC. Highly recommend and grateful they are still with us after the pandemic.

We were looking for a place to eat near the Public Theater and found Hasaki on Eater NY which is such a reliable source for restaurants. We had a couple of appetizers, the mixed seaweed salad and edamame which was a terrific way to begin our dinner and then the sushi plates. Everything was simply delicious!! We will be returning soon.

Hasaki just meets the bar for acceptable sushi but i can't say i was either disappointed or happy to have gone. The price is pretty middle of the road ($70 for a sushi omakase). Omakase gets served on a platter to you all at once. The fish quality is fine, lots of typical cuts (blue fin tuna, mackerel) taste as expected, but feel slightly warm (as if they have been sitting). The freshness of the fish doesn't really come through as you might expect from counter top sushi (maybe my mistake for not sitting at the counter). The establishment seems to draw people more due to its name and legacy (open since 1984) than quality of food. Would probably recommend going to a more expensive place and ordering fewer cuts or going to a much cheaper place and at least eating your fill if craving sushi. Coming here i felt both that i had paid a bit for what i got and was not satiated in fullness or flavor. Agedashi tofu was excellent though.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely loved this restaurant for my first omakase
Absolutely loved this restaurant for my first omakase experience! It was $90 per person, which was pretty good considering how yummy and high quality the experience was. I loved almost every piece (except for the octopus and fatty tuna sushi - for no other reason than texture problems), and left feeling satisfied but not stuffed. Our chef was wonderful, kind, and speedy, as was our waiter. But we never felt rushed! The restaurant itself was so nice and calm, I loved the traditional-feeling decor and the ambience overall. We sat at the sushi bar and it was so fun! 10 out of 10, will definitely go back for regular dining and maybe even omakase!

Michelin star??? Really???Judge for yourself to see if this is worth the $90 Omakase... Makes you wonder if the people works there are real Japanese and if this is a real Japanese restaurant... If I'm their Japanese sushi chef, I'd be ashamed to even remotely consider any of these Omakase quality... 6 people spent almost $900... What a disappointment...I'm simply going to say buyers beware...

Had diner here tonight & it was perfect!Shumai / red miso soup / salad & we split the sushi sashimi combo for two Perfect amount of food , left feeling so satisfied and refreshed. Very traditional Japanese ambiance, not the new age east village loud music vibe.I've been eating here for 10 years and the service is always so warm and charming and thoughtful.I seriously recommend for anyone who has never been. This place will quickly become one of your favorite sushi spots in town
Be the first to ReplyFirst time trying this place in East Village.
We each got the 12 piece omakase, which also comes with miso soup. We also got the uni platter, washu beef tataki, and homemade green tea and sesame ice cream. Great meal! The uni platter is great and it's a special for that day. The homemade ice cream is amazing! Service was great!
Be the first to ReplyFish was so fresh.
Amount was so decent. No need to get the omakase for one. The sushi regular plus one appetizer for our group of 3 to share was enough and amazing (we got the ebi shumai).

Before pandemic this was a favorite but they have definitely taken advantage of the general price increase we have seen happening and went a bit overboard. And with that I cannot say the quality has gone up. We paid $300 and left unsatisfied.
Be the first to ReplyA fixture of the East Village and one of the best sushi
A fixture of the East Village and one of the best sushi experiences in the city. I prefer the more traditional Edomae-style sushi for which it is hard to beat Hasaki. I have tried a number of seasonal specialities here that are not available at many other sushi establishments. The ambience is calm and inviting, clean and unpretentious. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplySolid sushi spot in the east village.
I hadn't had omakase in a while and this place had reservations open. My friend and I had the 12 piece special and ordered sake and the octopus as an addition. Cute space with very fresh sushi and the sake pairing was perfect.

Ordered the Sea Urcihin Plate for 30 dollars and the Sashimi Chirashi for 35. There were three variety of Unis: Hokkaido, California, and Main. The Hokkaido had the perfect blend of creaminess, texture and seafood flavor, the California's texture was softer and packed with flavor and the Maine had the most texture and had a very mild flavor. This is a sharable plate for tasting between two. The Sashimi Chirashi had more variety of fish but less amounts of it. The rice tasted a bit different and was clarified to use the use of red vinegar to give it a slightly different flavor. I think for the price, I would have liked to see a bit more sashimi otherwise the good was good. Service was fantastic.

Excellent sushi spot in the village with a range of traditional offerings and atmosphere. Small point deduction for price to value which felt a little for portions. Miso cod was delicious and oily and sweetly seared on the outside and delicately flaked on the inside.
Be the first to ReplyThis is hands down the best sushi place in NYC.
They've been here since the 80's so they must be doing something right. The fish is so fresh and their service is outstanding. I came here this time with a new friend who had never been here. She enjoyed the meal so much. I really love the grilled salmon and sushi of course- it was so fresh that it melts in your mouth. The waiter was knowledgeable and helped us choose a sake to pair with the meal. They also have a newly renovated garden in the back that is open for outdoor dining. I recommend making reservations on Resy before going. I am glad they are now taking reservations for small parties. I will keep coming back here for a fabulous sushi dinner where I can eat slowly and enjoy the company of friends.

I don't know how many times I've been in the East Village to only pass by this place with a quick glance. If you're a sushi lover like me, don't make the same mistake! Hasaki is the real deal -- you get Phenomenal otoro that has the soft melt-in-your-mouth texture of marbled steak. Fresh sushi and sashimi, decent portions, good service.

What a pretty, underground restaurant in the heart of the East Village. We came for the sushi mid-week just before heading to Stomp, around the corner. The Uni was the highlight of the meal, per my guest. At $15 a piece, we were glad for that!Other vegetarian highlights were the platter of mushrooms sauteed in sake, butter, and soy: Enoki, hen of the woods, shiitake, and a couple of others were fresh and savory. The agedashi tofu was OKI - a sizeable portion - but not much different from any other place. The seaweed salad consisted of at least three different kinds was tasty, but tiny. Overall, the vegetarian options here are few and expensive, but they can make for a good meal if your pals have sushi cravings in a pretty lace when in the village.
Be the first to ReplyVery fresh, great sushi, in a very comfortable space.
We had the 9 piece Omakase and it was great. At $65 pp it's one of the cheaper Omakase experiences in the city. We didn't sit at the bar but at a table in the restaurant. There is also an outdoor garden that is very nice. Service attentive and pro.
Be the first to ReplySolid sushi bar in the East Village with a great outdoor
Solid sushi bar in the East Village with a great outdoor patio seating option that has barricades between the tables. I would definitely recommend the patio. Just note that the omakase is served all at once given that it is not at the bar. We had the sushi and sashimi dinner and omakase with an additional yellowtail scallion roll. The quality was solid and the rolls had the perfect balance of rice to fish. Overall it's a good option for grabbing sushi - for omakase I do prefer the actual sushi bar option but this is perfectly fine for getting nigiri and rolls.
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming here for years, and while I want to be
I've been coming here for years, and while I want to be understanding during Covid, I have to say that our $65 per person dinner was just substandard. The salmon teriyaki was bloated and fatty, with no adornment, the salad greens were wilted, and at those prices it just hurt. I want to support these guys but when the quality has slipped so much, I can't say I will come back soon. I hope things get better for them post pandemic.
Be the first to ReplyHasaki is one of our old times favorite and still is.
The food is very good in general with the occasional ups and downs . We will always go back no matter what the circumstances but a few things need to be addressed. With the coronavirus obviously things are not the same anywhere, however the place is lacking the ambiance and settings of a somewhat expensive dinning. It seems to be neglected . This is a constructive comment and by no means a criticism. We will always enjoy our dinners at Hasaki

Came here on a Thursday night as one of my friends was having a strong craving for Uni. We were in the area and this spot was the first place we found that was serving Uni.The Unis, listed as Uni Maine, were listed for $8 each. We ordered quite a handful amount of them. They're served with rice on the bottom and uni on top wrapped in seaweed (assuming you don't know). We also ordered two Sushi & Sashimi Omakase, which went for $75 each. They tasted just as you expected them to taste with no real high expectations for it to be out of the world, although it was quite expensive. The entrees came with Miso Soup and although we only ordered two entrees, we got three soups for each of us.Besides the food, we ordered three different bottles of sake. Don't remember which ones and you can probably guess why. I guess from the amount of money we spent here, the server brought out another bottle on the house. *queue the "i'm in danger" meme. The server was awesome, tolerating how obnoxious we must have been (after a few bottles of course) and playing music from a bluetooth speaker. Hopefully, we helped support a local business in return. How I remembered all of this stuff to write this review is also beyond me.
