Top Ramen joint in Chicago
Top broth and incredible flavor. Tender meat and fresh veggies. Hard to get into this little join but come early, write your name down, go have a drink, they will text you and give you 10 min to get there - super cool
Be the first to ReplyBetter than ramen in Japan!
The ramen here is the best I’ve ever had…including when I lived in Japan. It’s tiny and that’s my only gripe. It’s so tiny that if you’re not there at 4pm when they open you’ll have a wait. Usually we just grab a drink at a nearby bar. I always get the signature 25% spice. It gives the ramen the perfect amount of kick without needing to babysit my water. My boyfriend’s mom comes all the way to Chicago from LA just for this ramen yearly and I don’t blame her one bit! It’s truly delicious and beyond anything I’ve ever had.

Very bad, ordered for delivery waste of money. Soup is so oily yukk no taste. It has nice reviews dunno why.

If you’re willing to wait easily between 1-3 hours, this is hands down the best ramen in Chicago. It’s incredibly small and feels like a dark basement (which it is) but the ramen is incredible. Highly recommend for a late night bite.
Be the first to ReplySalty But Good! Best Chashu I’ve Had
Huge ramen person here so I had to try this place out during my last visit in Chicago.
Definitely recommend getting in line early because this place probably only seats 20 or so people side by side. We showed up at 4:30 for 5:00 opening on a Thursday night and were in the last group seated.
A side tip, the place is pretty hard to find. Before opening, go into Sawada cafe and down the stairs inside. The line to high five ramen is along the wall to your right. If accessing from the outside by the main entrance door, you'll have to go around into the Green Street Smoked Meats entrance and you'll find the entrance.
Overall, dark atmosphere but good vibe. Friendly service and waitresses. There are only 4 types of ramen and you range in spice. I ordered their High Five (tonkatsu) with 1/4 spice. Overall, ramen was really salty which I was not a huge fan of but what makes up for it is the pork chashu which was amazing. The meat pretty much melted in your mouth, leaving me wanting more.
Overall if I were to return for ramen, I would try something else here. But I would definitely come back for the chashu.
Not my favorite ramen place but I actually prefer Ramen San if I were to pick one in Chi.
Best. Ramen. Ever.
My nephew took his dad and me to this place for a guy's night out. They only have seating for a dozen or so, so we waited for our seats for about 90 minutes upstairs at Green Street Meats. The wait was worth it! I got the medium spice ramen and it was plenty spicy for me, but it was oh, so good, I couldn't stop eating, spicy or not. I've been to other ramen bars but this is the best!
Be the first to ReplyFull-bodied broth, perfectly cooked meat and the best eggs ever!
The best ramen ever if you're open to a full-bodied broth with tons of flavor. I've been going to this place since 2014 when the Wait List was names on a clipboard and now in 2019, there's still four hour waits for this place four years after. My favorite parts of the ramen is the broth, meat and perfectly cooked egg.
Unlike most places in the West Loop, it's still worth the wait and price since it's a truly a unique take on ramen. 5 stars!
Crazy-spicy broth
High Five Ramen located at one level below ground, dark and a 16 seaters ( bar type). Be prepared to wait for 2 to 3 hours ( no reservation so you have to go and put your name. Also, there is no assurance that you will be seated as a group. Once inside, slurp a bowl of the signature, crazy-spicy ( have no spice one also but avoid and go for medium one) broth noodles, a slow-cooked egg, roasted pork belly, locally grown sprouts, and black garlic oil, this unique rendition is worth the burn. For relief, sip on a slushy tiki cocktail and keep enough napkin to wipe the sweat that will flood your system
Be the first to ReplyLife Changing Ramen
This place is truly amazing! Only 16 seats in the restaurant so if you don’t arrive early and get in the first seating, you may need to wait a while. Grab a tasty beverage at Green St Meats while you wait! This ramen is beyond amazing. You choose your spice level. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Quick in and out. Check out the menu online before you go for the first time so you can place your order right away. Not the place to linger. The food is too good to keep the next group waiting. Go upstairs to Green St to linger. My family is so crabby that I wrote this review! They don’t want everyone knowing about this life changing Ramen. You’re welcome!
Totally overhyped!
Well, you all are probably aware of the extremely long wait for this ramen restaurant in a tiny basement, so I am not going to go over the wait time again.
Talking about the food - ramen, it's decent, but I could not give more than 3 stars.
1) The broth is way too greasy. I know it's bone broth, but bone broth does not have to be oily, and the richness of broth should not solely rely on fat.
2) The pork belly is way too fatty. I love pork belly, but when the piece of meat in my bowl is at least 75% fat and broken, it's not right.
3) The noodle is mediocre. They serve wavy noodles, which is fine for most ramen. But the noodles taste like instant noodles.
4) Finally, do you really want to eat a bowl of ramen in a basement, with lighting so dark that you can barely see what's in your bowl?
