Cozy ramen spot for a chilly Chicago evening! We arrived
Cozy ramen spot for a chilly Chicago evening! We arrived Saturday evening at around 5pm. Be prepared to wait 2-2.5 hours, but once you are seated, you will be treated with casual yet courteous service! There are only 4 ramen bowls to choose from, and only one option for vegetarian/vegan folks. I ordered the Mushroom Maitake bowl with Full spice (very spicy but really hits on a chilly day). In addition, the coconut drink tastes like a refreshing Piña colada! I highly recommend this place, but definitely make sure to plan to wait a few hours especially on a Saturday evening. It'll be well worth the wait!
Be the first to ReplyThe ramen (the intense version) is too overpowering.
But I like the ambience. It's at the ground floor of a beer and BBQ garden so you can order a drink while waiting and bring it with you when you dine.
Be the first to ReplyHigh Five is definitely my favorite Ramen spot in Chicago!
High Five is definitely my favorite Ramen spot in Chicago! I usually order the Maitake Ramen without seasoned egg with half spice level. The taste is SO good, not even hyping up! The broth is made of mushroom, and it's delicious! My boyfriend got the Shio ramen without pork belly and he liked his Ramen as well. The only meat they have is pork belly, no chicken/ beef. I also ordered a snow maiden Sake along with my Ramen and the combination was perfect! Be careful of what spice level you choose, they definitely aren't joking when they say that their spice levels are feisty! This Ramen spot has very limited seats (not more than 10-12) They do not take reservations and usually wait time is a lot (at least over an hour over the weekends) My boyfriend and I usually write down our names and explore West Loop area in the meantime. The ambiance is a bit rusty and gives a typical speakeasy vibe. Our server during most of my visits was Shayan and she is pretty cool. I love her sassy and witty comments! I recommend this Ramen spot 11/10. It's simply the best!

OMG...this place was mouthwatering delicious... Ordered the tonkotsu ramen...which also is mixed in with miso. Did 1/4 spicy and I like spicy...could have added a tad more. It was BOMB. Original. Unique flavors. The pork belly literally melted in your mouth. We waited an hour or so...worth it . We got drink and 1 sushi roll across the street at Dokku.
Be the first to ReplyWe tried this cozy ramen spot end of December last year.
I been wanting to try this place because the idea is very similar to Ichiran ramen we had in New York. The place offers cute and intimate dinning experience. We were told an hour wait time since they have very few seating options, but we were seated within 15 mins. The ramen was decent. I'd give it a 3/5 compared to other ramen I've tried in the city. Left one is Maitake ramen with 1/2 spiced. It was very very spicy. It would have tasted better if the broth wasn't so oily. Right one is Shoyu ramen without pork belly with 1/4 spicy. It wasn't spicy enough so I asked for extra spicy on the side.

I would suggest for a small party to go ahead and get your name down with the hostess, bar hop around and come immediately once you receive a text. It took about 1.5 hours for us to have a table, we were quoted for a 3-4 hour wait. Once you receive the text, you get only 10 minutes to arrive and check in. The menu is quite simple, as our server explained. She also mentioned that for such a small and high demanding restaurant (16 seats) there's a mandatory one-bowl per customer rule. So if you were bar hopping like me, plan to eat lightly. We were seated at the back bar, I like how they have water pitchers, silverware and napkins set every few seats. Our ramen came with 20 minutes. I got a shoyu ramen, 1/4 spice. I liked the broth it was rich, had a deep soy flavor. I liked the soy egg and the noodles were tender. Charsui pork isn't my favorite protein. I usually like to have it substituted with chicken but they didn't have that option here. All in all, it's alright. I was too full to truly enjoy it. When our bill arrived, they gave us a hot towels and some tasty hokkaido milk candy, it was a nice touch.

Best ramen in Chicago, wait time could be up to 2 hours but it is worth it. Broth is reach and delicious. It is very tiny place with intimate bar casual atmosphere right next to Randolf street.

I hate this place their hostess sucks the waits are too long and the girl keeps a attitude.
Be the first to ReplyNot so low key spot anymore.
Service is fast but it's a waitlist. best to go with only at most 3 people or kill some time by drinking somewhere close by. The ramen itself is interesting. I opted to get 1/4 spice and I think that's enough spice level to enjoy it while not dying from the meal. I remember getting 1/2 spice and I was sweating and crying lol. I like the meat portion and they serve a whole egg vs half an egg typically seen in other ramen shops. However the broth is more on the heavier side and I'm more of a clearer broth kind of guy. To each their own!

They have a small selection however the ramen is delicious! The atmosphere is fresh and new for the city with an underground feel. The location is really small and you may have a bit of a wait, which is a great time to have drinks next door.

- The toppings were quite good, and some of the best I've had- The broth was a little boring- The vegetarian ramen was quite good, I'm told- The service was friendly and the atmosphere was nice.- The wait was long but definitely manageable. We got drinks upstairs while we waited.- Everyone talks about it being spicy, so I let myself be convinced to get 1/4 spicy, which was a mistake. It was barely spicy at all. Next time, I'd get at least 1/2 spicy. I don't recommend 1/4 spicy if you want something that has any noticeable amount of spice.I'd definitely go back.
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best ramen I have ever had.
I like spicy food and I would probably not go over the 1/4 spice level.

Had not been here since 2017! They are consistently still the best ramen I've had. Flavorful and will set your mouth on fire (if you ask for that spicy heat)!

My favorite ramen in the city - hands down! This intimate ramen bar is tucked away in West Loop and has the coolest, edgy vibe. I am obsessed with the wall decorated with pop culture stickers and stickers from local Chicago businesses. With minimal seating available, you can expect to get a bit cozy - a perfect fit for a casual date night. There can be a bit of a wait, but stopping by early can help. Now, as for the ramen... it's absolutely delicious. You will be served a MASSIVE bowl of ramen that's customized to your spice preference. I like going with the 1/4 spice because the spice level adds some tang to the bowl without overpowering the broth with spice. My favorite ramen bowl is the Tonkutsu. The creamy pork broth is dressed with the softest marinated egg, 2 giant pieces of the creamiest pork belly, and fresh sprouts that all sit on top of a bed of stringy comforting ramen noodles. At the end of your meal, you'll be provided a warm towel to freshen up after diving into the amazing food.
Be the first to ReplyAs predicted, High Five Ramen is overrated, but still a fun
As predicted, High Five Ramen is overrated, but still a fun experience. The wait was 3 hours on a Saturday/February evening. We finished up around 8:30 and there were a few empty seats available. As a short person, the high seating was uncomfortable and there wasn't a place to put my feet. The tonkutso bowl, I really enjoyed the egg and pork, and I'm curious to know if the noodles were homemade. However, the broth was too salty, there were too many bean sprouts, and the spice is not integrated into the broth, but laid on top and doesn't compliment the dish as a whole. The service was amazing though - everyone we spoke with was overly friendly and matched the hype of this restaurant. I'm happy I tried it, but I still have yet to find something that beats wasabi.
Be the first to ReplyFound this place by accident and I'm so happy.
Speakeasy vibes, there is also a smokehouse bbq bar upstairs. The place is REALLY small, I think maybe 12 ppl capacity. 10/10 noodles, I never knew what perfectly chewy was until this. Honestly before them chewy didn't even sound good to me10/10 meat, literally so tender and flavorful 9/10 broth, flavor was awesome but wasn't super smooth as in could feel texture of spices 8/10 margarita/ slushee it would have been perfect but I felt ambushed to get a tiny cup for $18 10/10 service. They really take care of you and are happy to help with any questions. And we were there closer to closing time. Also bc so little customers at a time food is served pretty quickly, we waited about 10 minutes after ordering. The host told me that on Saturday they had a 5hr waitlist but I'm not surprised $ wise I would say expect to spend $45/person they don't have any regular drinks just margaritas, sakes and some other stuff. But Ramen itself is $18-$25 WARNING : Whatever you do ask for way less spice that you need. My Mexican mother who regularly eat spicy food said her lips were burning. I myself thought it was spicy even by ramen standards

My favorite ramen spot in Chicago! High Five is a really small underground spot with about 15 seats and the wait time is typically 2-3 hours unless you go right when they open. But it is so worth the wait! They have a limited menu with a few different ramen options and a spice scale with four levels to choose from. I ordered the tonkotsu with half spice and wow! It was spicy. And I can handle a good amount of spice, but it definitely had a pretty heavy kick, which shouldn't have been a surprise considering how much chili powder and peppers I saw on top. But the flavor was amazing. You could still taste how flavorful the ramen and broth were even over the spice and it was tasty.I'll definitely be back (but might go for the 1/4 spice level next time)!

Came here at the recommendation of several trusted friends and was not disappointed! First off, get here early - I came and put my name on the list and luckily got a spot in 30 minutes, but I've heard some horror stories where it can take an inordinate amount of time. It's a small place, very much in the style of a Golden-Gai bar, so I back it. The host was friendly and funny, and as I asked for his recommendations, he begged me not to get the full-spice option. He said its not worth it. It even says it on a sign. Might be some twisted way to get stubborn and steel-stomached people to order it anyways, but I thought the better of it and ordered the half-spice shio. It was plenty spicy (even for me, who some affectionately call "Spicy Mike"), even to the point where next time, I think I'll try the quarter-spice option. Sometime the spice can get in the way of the flavor and I think that's what's happening here. Altogether a tasty bowl, not really traditional, but clearly a fun twist on it. The noodles were al dente, the seasoned egg was nicely done and the toppings were generous. As a word of caution - the big man sitting next to me ordered the full-spice and was choking up a bit and wiping what must have been tears (of joy?) from his eyes. He got a call mid-way through and was having a hard time communicating the situation. Poor friend might've called for help. They got a few sake, highball, and beer options to whet your whistle, and plenty of water to satiate your tortured tongue. All in all, a fun place to have a nice Tokyo "inspired" night on the town.

High five is very average in my opinion, but an enjoyable bowl of ramen nonetheless. I wish the music was just a little less loud and it wasn't so dim and I would have added another star. It's like you're yelling just to have conversation and you definitely need extra light if you're trying to get to something specific in your soup, like part of an egg, for example. All in all, like I said, an enjoyable bowl of ramen but still very average in taste and ambiance. The service was great but I'm not dying to go back.

To start off this review the atmosphere of this place is amazing. It reminds me of being in Osaka. The wait staff are great and the drinks are good. However the one Mark about this place is a Ramen is heavy. The noodles are good not the best I've had the broth is decently flavorful and I use a very good spice. The pork was probably the best part. This is definitely a Ramen for the Chicago palette with a nice respect to Japanese Ramen. However other places do it better and the heaviness of it it will be with you for a long time. If that doesn't bother you then it's a great Ramen place.

Doesn't look like much and is a little ominous walking down dark steps into a dark room. But not let me tell you I will never fully enjoy ramen from anywhere else in my life. My cousin told me when she went she did not speak for 30 minutes because she was so immersed into the food and she was right. I was in a whole different universe while eating my bowl of ramen. If I am ever in Chicago again this will be my first stop. The speakeasy exclusive vibes and friendly staff is another perk of the place.

RATING: 6/10High Five Ramen is tucked into an alleyway in West Loop--the same one that houses Trivoli Tavern. The entrance is an inconspicuous side door. Once you're inside, you're greeted by a pitch black room and a set of stairs you have to stumble down on. The actual dining room is extremely tiny. My friend and I got seats at the bar after a 30 minute wait. I got the Shoyu ramen with 1/4 spice after reading the reviews. It was the perfect amount of spice! The broth was extremely flavorful with a bitter aftertaste. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the pork was super rich and fatty. I really enjoyed the runny egg as well. I really enjoyed the food, but to be honest, the service was a bit disappointing. My friend and I were catching up after not seeing each other for a few years, and naturally we were both talking a lot. Our waitress came over very early on asking if we were finished, even though we still had full bowls. She ended up asking the same question through the night around 4 times. Eventually, she went straight to asking if we wanted boxes. I understand that they are trying to keep spots open, but we definitely felt rushed towards the end of the meal. Overall, if you like very rich fatty food this is your spot! Just make sure not to take too long when you eat.
