Love their grilled artichokes.
Service last time we came was above and beyond. Food kinda pricey but always well made. The only dud I ever had was the omelette

I've been here so many times, and I absolutely love this place! The service is top-notch every time, the ambiance is wonderful, and the food is fantastic. I have a ton of favorites here, including the barbecue ribs, French dip Au Jud, Macho salad, clam chowder, and their Sunday specials. Highly recommend this restaurant!

First time dining at Hillstone and had an amazing meal! We were a party of three and my two friends are regulars here. They spoke highly of Hillstone, so I was excited to eat here based on their praises. The verdict? AMAZING! Definitely exceeded my expectations from the food, to the service, to the overall vibe of the establishment. If you're looking for a good eat in this area of the city, don't look much further than Hillstone. I took 100% of my friends' recommendations for my order. We shared the grilled artichokes for an appetizer and I had the USDA Prime Famous French Dip with their infamous french fries. Both were fantastic! This was my first time having artichokes this way, and everything about it was perfection. The smokiness from the grill complemented the artichoke so well. If they have this item on the menu, I definitely recommend adding it to your order. The French Dip was one of the best I've had. The meat was tender and flavorful even before the au jus. The fries are worth all the hype. They were the perfect side to the meal. (They are so particular about their fries, they won't even let you order them to go.) Hillstone made a strong first impression. Everything about the meal was extraordinary. I'm looking forward to my next visit for another round of grilled artichokes and to try more off of their menu.

While I won't claim nativity (I reserve the born and raised nomenclature to those who have survived it), I have lived here for over 4 decades. Like many, I was here when it was Houston's, when the smell of the fire, the whisking by of the waitresses that seemed to be from another era, Anchor Steam on tap, the jazz band in the background, and the perfectly lit essence of the restaurant transported you to a different world, if only for an hour or two. Gatsby's garden parties had nothing on Houston's of years gone by. I remember when the Veggie burger went up to $10 way back when. Couscous covered the plate with little regard for saving a dime or two . My only complaint was that every dessert (key lime pie excluded) had mandatory walnuts. Veggie burgers are brushing up against $25 now, and as a new waitress explained to me, the smattering of couscous on the plate was "the required portion". *Sigh* But I think what did it for us was the health care charge. Ok, ya got me with the prices for the experience- up, up, and away. I never leave less than a generous tip, because I've spent 10 years of my life in the service industry, I tip because it feels good, in fact it feels great. But that health care charge. I know it's not a lot, but for me it's the straw that broke the camel's back. Our waitress gleefully explained how great it was. I guess the glee was supposed to be contagious. I'm sorry she was put in that position. Do I still go? It's been a while. If you have a first date with someone, go, have fun. It's not like it once was, but it's there. I go by from time to time on nights with my dog on a walk. Sounds busy enough. But it's sad when you knew what it once was- it's not that anymore.

I definitely recommend this place! The food was great, service was incredible, and we loved the vibes of the music / atmosphere in general (the music wasn't too loud, so you could listen and still hear your company. And we weren't right on top of anyone else, so it was perfect). My fiancรฉ got the ribs and subbed the coleslaw for cream corn. I had a burger, added bacon, with a side of fries. We also had the chicken meatballs as an appetizer, and had 3 drinks while we were there. Everything was great!

What a treat this place is! My friend brought me here for my birthday. I live in SF but never think about going to that part of the city. Luckily enough, we had no trouble getting there or finding free parking very close to the restaurant. The staff was super friendly. The restaurant was warm and inviting; very comfortable. Our server was impeccable and the rest of the waitstaff were all great! Very attentive without hovering. Everything that I had was absolutely delicious! I LOVE artichokes and never had them grilled before. My friend and I shared the grilled artichoke appetizer. It was heavenly to me!! I am a big guy but not a big eater. I got the Ding's Crispy Chicken Sandwich with french fries. The sandwich was cut into 3. I was struggling to eat the second piece of sandwich because I was getting full and ate half of the fries; I took the remaining sandwich and fries home. My friend was raving about their key lime pie so we had to get it. It was the best key lime pie I have ever had. The margaritas were very tasty too; my only complaint is that I wish they were bigger. I left there so full!! The remaining sandwich and fries were great today as leftovers for lunch. All around great experience!! Hope to be back soon!
Be the first to ReplyHillstone (Houston's) never disappoints.
The staff is always SO friendly, I love the tranquility of the restaurant itself, and OH MY GOD. The burger. Is. Insane. I don't quite understand how this burger hasn't won every single award there is, it's just too perfect. I love sitting outside on their patio on a sunny day, or inside at night with my family on special occasions. I feel right at home.

The best spinach and artichoke dip in the US! I've been a regular customer since my college years in Kansas City, and now whenever I'm in SF, I make sure to stop by. The service is excellent, and I particularly love the Hawaiian ribeye and prime ribs.
Be the first to ReplyI enjoyed my time at the Hillstone.
I had an appointment close so why not try a new place. The food was delicious. My clam chowder, definitely one of the best I have had in SF. The setting is upscale service.

Last night before the warriors game we had a 5pm dinner here. Hillstone sf was a well oiled restaurant machine. From the moment we walked in our experience was perfect. Food and service impeccable. We had the ribs which should not be missed, these things are a culinary masterpiece. Deviled eggs were not normal, and when I say "not" normal I mean they were "abnormally good".Finally, the things that made our evening over the top was our server ALI (hey Hillstone management are you listening?) ALI was just the best, she made us feel comfortable, she was charming, she was there when we needed her, and in a moment of panic when I noticed my cell phone was dying- she whisked it away and returned it charged! She literally saved the day! Go to Hillstone, get great service, eat sublime food, have ALI as your server.
Be the first to Replyalways great.
service great, food consistently very good. good ambiance. clean, well run restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious.
The only reason why I gave it 3 stars is because they've become a bit relaxed with their dress code so if you're looking for a place to dress up this is not exactly the place. That being said their ribs are fall off the bone tender, their burger is juicy and perfectly cooked. Their shorestring fries are crunchy and seasoned with steak seasoning. And they make the best hot fugue ice cream sundae! Their spinach and artichoke dip was pretty yummy, however their casear salad was interesting. It's a mix of romaine and kale, they add corn, and the dressing doesn't really have flavor. Honestly, I would skip that one. Overall, their staff is friendly and very hospitable!

I'm not one to leave bad reviews but this place demands a price and I think people need to know. We arrived with a reservation and were brought to a booth backing up to the open kitchen promptly. I didn't realize the hostess had an attitude until I asked if a window table was possible. she replied with a lot of attitude,"I didn't know that was a preference ". I looked around at a mostly empty restaurant and saw several booths by windows empty. So I said politely that I hadn't realized that it was possible to make requests like that through their online reservation service. She said that she only had a window table, so since we preferred a booth we sat. But the weird attitude was so unusual and off putting. Our waiter arrived and was very pleasant and remained so throughout. We had the artichokes to start , which were pretty good though not even a close second to Buckeye Roadhouse's, sorry.Salads and Ahi Tartare arrived and were good, too. I ordered the salmon and had specifically asked for it to be cooked medium rare as I can't stand dry salmon. When our entrees arrived, my salmon was over cooked, bummer. But I asked the runner to take it bacit, explained that I ordered it med rare and it was over. My family began enjoying their Hawaiian ribeyes and double cut pork chops and said they were nice but definitely needed salt, which was on the table. Fifteen minutes later my second salmon arrived (pretty quick) and the woman who brought it put it down in front of me while loudly proclaiming that she will wait here while I check to see if it's cooked properly. Such a strange service practice since it was their kitchens fault that my dinner was delayed and now it felt like they were annoyed with me about this. Did the chef not have confidence that they could cook it correctly? Would think that she would be more gracious but none of that was present. I cut the salmon open and even though it was still a tad overcooked, I said it was fine because I didn't want to subject my family to another delay and also, she was so unpleasantly intense. We finished entrees and had the key lime pie, chocolate pot de crรจme and chocolate sundae for dessert. All were pleasant if not amazing.Overall, this is an expensive restaurant and the service does not correspond. There are lot of places in SF to spend hundreds of dollars on a dinner that makes everyone feel happy and appreciated as a customer, but this restaurant is not one of them. I see from other reviews that good service here can be selective, and I have to say in my time there I saw some people asked to remove their hats and some not. And it did seem to correlate to appearance. To note, we were a white presenting family, although multigenerational so maybe , probably not their ideal customer. They can keep on being really rather awful, but we won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyAlways a 5 star.
Would give 1,000,000 if I could. Probably safe to say my favorite restaurant and menu there is. You really just can't go wrong no matter what you order! It's all delicious and staff is all top notch. Rushed straight from the airport to get there 1 minute before they closed and ran to the bar to order. Such a great start to the trip! The French dip is a MUST! Add Swiss cheese and always get the horseradish! It's so light and creamy. And the artichokes are a must when in season! Don't miss this spot!

Variety of vegetarian options: 3/5While we loved the spinach artichoke dip, we later found out it wasn't veg and was made with chicken stock or something... oh well! Still a great place and we'll definitely come back for some other key items. Can't recommend the veggie burger (it's quite large so would suggest splitting it), the grilled artichoke (I didn't try it but other family got it and said it was delicious), and then the ice cream sundae for dessert was incredible. They serve the chocolate sauce on the side so you can layer it in between the ice cream :)

The restaurant's atmosphere is perfect for a romantic night out or a low-key dinner with friends. The attentive service is also noteworthy, as the staff is known for their hospitality and dedication to making every guest feel welcome. One of the reasons Hillstone has developed a huge following is undoubtedly because of its fantastic burger. Additionally, the spinach artichoke dip is another standout menu item that comes highly recommended.Hillstone is an excellent spot for a date night, as the restaurant's ambiance and menu are sure to impress. It's also a great place for good conversations, with a laid-back atmosphere that encourages guests to relax and enjoy the experience.Overall, if you're looking for a cozy, intimate restaurant with attentive service, delicious food, and a great atmosphere, Hillstone is definitely worth checking out. The cult following it has developed is well-deserved, and I highly recommend trying out the burger and spinach artichoke dip.
Be the first to Reply10/10.
Food was amazing, as well as ambiance and service. Can't wait to come back. Their key lime pie is to dieeee for
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming to this place for years.
We are locals and want to support the local restaurants in our neighborhood. Came in for dinner at 500 pm to get a table for 6 pp. Manager and hostess states that they do not seat any table larger than 5 persons max. We have been here many times in the past and sat at a booth with 6 pp. The manager insisted that their policy did not allow it and there would be not exceptions. He only offered to split us into a 4/2 or 3/3 seating arrangement. Our party was 3 couples and how were we supposed to have dinner apart from each other? There were many tables and booths available at that time on a slow Thursday evening, and rather than trying to accommodate our party, he was willing to let a large tab walk out the door. How can a restaurant in this environment let business walk away and have it be acceptable? Their website does not have anything that even states that they don't seat 5+ table, and has an option to request 5+. Be aware of this bad policy and a manager that is inflexible. He could have accommodated us and let it be known that a future visit would be limited to 5 or less. Oh well, there goes a $600.00+ tab.
Be the first to ReplyThe worst experience.
Management would not seat a party of 6. We are local residents and want to support our neighborhood restaurants. We have ate here in the past with 6 pp with no issue. Came here tonight on a slow Thursday early and the would not seat us. They were adamant that they could only seat a max 5 per table. Wanted to have a nice dinner with 6 close friends and they said the best they could do was split us into. 4/2 or 3/3. The website does not say they cannot seat more than 5, and has an option that states it can seat 5+. The manager insisted it was policy and a non starter. Oh well, lose a 6 top table with a large tab of probably in excess of 600.00 tab with our food and drinks. They left a bad taste and will be losing our future business. Be aware of these bad management practices
Be the first to ReplyMy family and I have been coming to Hillstone for over 10
My family and I have been coming to Hillstone for over 10 years and it's always been good, but, yesterday, we were turned away because we had 6 people in our group. They wouldn't let us all sit together. They put four at one table and two at another across an aisle - totally ridiculous. My mom and brother were in town to visit us and my wife and I had our two boys, ages 12 and 11. And this has NEVER been an issue with six people - ever! We always go with the boys grandparents.Robert Cantero (Manager) told us that their "style of service" does not suit 6 people. I asked what that meant and he couldn't come up with a good answer. Then I asked when that went in to effect and he said a year ago. We were just there last month and six of us sat in a booth over looking the Embarcadero. Then he stumbled and said oh, it's starting today. Oh and the place was only about 30% full.We probably go there at least once per month on a Sunday and my in-laws also dine with us. And we've been going there for the LAST 10 YEARS!!And this guy was willing to for-go us ever eating there again. We've spent thousands of dollars over the years there and he couldn't care less. He was rude, smug and completely clueless about customer experience. Sad, really.
Be the first to ReplySo I paid my check in cash.
..the bartender brought my change in whole dollars, leaving me 53 cents short. Just because they don't have change I should be shorted? It's not a lot of money but they can take the hit if they don't have change.
Be the first to ReplyHiilstone restaurant is a great place to eat.
I would highly recommend making reservations. This eatery is causal, but upscale. The experience you'll get at Hillstone restaurant will be top notch from your service to the quality of food served. Grilled Artichokes (limited) - 5/5You'll love this appetizer. If it is available, I highly recommend ordering it. You'll get true heirloom artichokes from Castroville that is grilled. The flavor of the artichoke was suburb! The leaves were meaty, and the grilled flavor excellent. The artichoke was not jumbo sized, more on the medium size. For $20, I wish the artichoke size would be at least large. Famous French Dip au jus - 5/5This French dip sandwich is delicious! The meat is perfectly sliced prime rib that is melt in your mouth tender. This French dip sandwich is number 1 on my list. Highly recommend ordering this sandwich.Cheeseburger - 5/5This is a very tasty burger. The grilling imparts a nice flavor to the ground beef that is made fresh daily according to our server. The cheese burger was very good. The fries was best crispy and tasty, similar to In-n-Out's fries.Ahi Tuna Tartare - 5/5The ahi tuna was fresh and marinated well. The avocado was sliced perfectly and arranged in a fanned pattern nicely on the plate. The avocado was perfectly ripe and buttery. The ciabatta bread was perfect for the ahi tartare and avocado combo to spread on. Another dish that I highly recommend to order.Kalua Brownie a la mode. - 5/5You get a very chocolate rich, cherry brownie, topped with creamy vanilla bean ice cream. Kalua liquor drizzled over the dessert. Very flavorful and delicious. The perfect dessert to finish the meal.I highly recommend visiting Hillstone restaurant if you're visiting fisherman's wharf, Pier 39, or arriving back after visiting Alcatraz.
