Awful, Not Fresh
Food not fresh, and I had to go to bathroom several times. Rude service. I had to stop by nearby Ramen shop to cleanse my palate. Do NOT recommend.
Be the first to ReplyJapan at the pure essence
PROS True Japan at the essence, excellent quality of food in entire simplicity, great service, deserved price. Nice sake selection. Chance to stay at the table / in front of chefs. CONS Very minimal, maybe a bit too much. No windows, no open spaces, very few space. Recommended for couples. Get there in winter-time.
Be the first to ReplyOmakase + sake pairing = OMG
A real Japanese gem at the SOHO. We had the Omakase, and added the sake pairing. Both the food dishes and the sake were top notch. We particularly enjoyed the soft shell crab and the sashimi dish (the toro was simply divine. wish they served more of it). Add a friendly and attentive service, and you get an overall excellent experience.

Very serene restaurant with absolutely terrific food, both the sushi and the Waygu beef. Make a point of making it to Soho for this restuarrant alone.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but WOW - expensive !
We went for a special birthday dinner celebration and had the Omakase with sake pairings. The food was very good, in particular the chawan-mushi and sashimi. The portions were quite small -- maybe we paid $5/bite. Glad I went, need to save up for a return in a few years' time. The place is very small too -- not really any atmosphere. And it was fairly empty on the weeknight we went.
Be the first to ReplyNice lunch but not sure if this is Michelin star worthy
I did not realize that it was a Michelin star restaurant till I walked into the restaurant and saw the Michelin guide sitting in the entrance. The lunch menu was fairly extensive with lots of hot entrees, as well as sushi/sashimi and various lunch sets. The service was excellent and the staff spent the time explaining the content of each small dishes. I chose a beef lunch set and for $40, I expect a bit more in terms of quantity. Also charging $5 for a cup of tea was a bit more, if they are charging $40 for a lunch set.
While the lunch was okay, I actually think dinner might be a better experience. $120/170 omakaze is not cheap but at least I feel you see the creativity for Japanese cuisine. For Japanese lunch, there are certainly better choices in Soho and the city.
Chef Hirohisa is a gem - great birthday and a truly authentic Japanese experience in NYC
Took my wife here for her birthday dinner, and made the reservation 2 weeks in advance to be seated at the bar where we can observe Chef Hirohisa preparing the various dishes. The experience was one of the best in a Japanese restaurant in NYC we've had, which is a high bar given the number of excellent venues in the city.
The venue was hidden, sleek, and modern. We opted for the 7-course pre-fixe, and ended up getting an amusee as well as extra Soba noodles at no cost. It was plenty of food but there is a 9-courses option if you are extra hungry. The dishes were very well-paced and generally progressed from more "raw" (sashimi, wrapped scallops" to more "cooked" (shrimp head tempura, final dish was a wagyu steak) which was one of the many times we noticed Hirohisa's meticulous attention to detail. The dishes were all extremely delicious and high-quality, with the standouts being the shrimp head sashimi (part of the arctic shrimp in the sashimi tasting), eel rice, wagyu steak, and all the desserts in the final platter.
The best part of the night, perhaps, was talking to Chef Hirohisa after things quieted down a bit late at night. We chatted and asked him about his favorite restaurants back home in Japan (as we are visiting in a few months) - he ended up emailing us later that night with a long list of his favorites, including tough-to-find-for-foreigners local joints as well as restaurants ran by his cousin (in the Four Seasons Tokyo, so definitely not too shabby!) We were very impressed and thankful that he took time out of his own schedule to help us plan our trip, which we think really speak to the Chef's character beyond being a genius in the kitchen.
Thank you Hirohisa for a fantastic experience and we will definitely be back!
The food is good.
