We loved this place.
Food and service was great. Whenever I talk about our trip to Barcelona I always talk about Hoja Santa. For me it was such a memorable experience to have elevated Mexican food that had such original flavors, presentation and experiences! Great place!

Great food, creative dishes, but,I was very excited to try Hoja Santa after reading the Micheline Guide review and have to say the food was all in all creatively delicious, especially the appetizers. The ambiance was great, relaxed but with style, and the service was OK but not great. And here is why-- 1. The sommelier ignored my selection for a specific wine and insisted on getting the priciest wines on the list without really giving expert advice (i.e. not doing her or his job properly)2. When we finished our meal and were ordering deserts, we were asked to move to another room that was sadly silent and poorly situated (between the reception and the pathway to the kitchen. You just have to see it), completely ignoring the positive vibe that materialized between me and my girl. 3. When I gave a professional feedback to the servers how off putting the switching the table was, they didn't really give a damn or tried to assuage their customers as I would have expected as a Micheline starred restaurant.Anyways, I just think that one Michelin starred restaurant should know better. Guess that's why it's not a two starred restaurant. Just a thought.

It was important to my fiancé to try an Adria restaurant and as it is impossible to get into Tickets, he made a reservation here. We walked in and were guided to the dining room where all of the chefs stopped everything to greet us. What a cool way to enter! We both ordered the hot and cold margarita which was the best margarita that we've ever had (the classic margarita was also good but go for the hot and cold all the way). One thing I noticed was I sat with my back towards the kitchen and because there were so many wait staff all I heard was the flurry of clicking heels right behind me as people went back and forth the whole dinner. It was a little distracting. Each course was quite good and flavorful, the only one I didn't care for was the sea urchin but that's just a personal preference. The weakest part for me was dessert. When we were done we were escorted to the dessert room. I realize you're then supposed to relax and wind down but the dinner went fairly quickly and each course was brought out timely, so much so that dessert felt very slow. When dessert finally came we were unimpressed. They gave us a pumpkin dish that didn't taste like pumpkin at all. There was a meringue "tart" that was okay and then my fiancé asked for their famous corn ice cream which they were kind enough to bring to us. That was pretty good but had we not had that one, it would've been disappointing. I think dessert needs to be rethought - the room, the service and the dishes. That is the impression you leave people with and it left us feeling let down which is unfortunate since the dinner was quite good.

The original plan was to go to tickets but couldn't get a reservation so decided to try out Hoja Santa which was my second choice. The atmosphere was very welcoming I was warmly welcomed by chefs in the kitchen and servers once I walked in and was led to the table. The server kindly went over menu options and we decided to go for the tasting menu. Looking back it was a great choice since I had no idea what to try and it was fun to guess the next menu, every dish was a little surprise. The ingredients were all very fresh and well presented. So pretty and unique how the dish was set on a plate. I took million photos. Also the server explained to us the 'how to enjoy' instructions for every dish which was very interesting to hear. They had a separate space for 'dessert' so we moved out table to next room for it. The whole experience from walking in to leave the door was awesome and definitely worth every dollar. I will definitely coming back when I am in Barcelona next time.
Be the first to ReplyWhat we thought would be a consolation to being unable to
What we thought would be a consolation to being unable to get reservations at Tickets turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences to our Barcelona tripDon't let the casual exterior and accommodating interior fool you, this is a unique Michelin Star restaurant! When being seated by the host, you are first taken by the open kitchen where the entire staff drops what they're doing to greet you. This was such a pleasant surprise, as we couldn't stop smiling when we were seated just feet away from the spectacle that was going on in the kitchen. Our waitress was delightful and recommended the prix fixe menu and would cater to our tastes/preferences. The relative who recommended us to this restaurant also suggested that we do the prix fixe menu, but we already had a strong idea of what we wanted and were a little more limited than usual due to my wife's pregnancy. We ordered:- Antojitos- Cantine olives- Freshly made guacamole with quelites- Pork rinds with black recado and smoked eel- Cude tamal with epazote- Smooth clam with jalepeño emulsion - Seasonal tomato salad- Eggplant taco with lamb- Cochinita pibil infladita- Beef taco - Bone marrow and chambarete taco - Black garlic mole with avocado- Chilean Wagyu ribeye with black chichilo- Dessert (can't remember the name for the life of me because I was so full but it was some sort of cream corn and multiple types of chocolate)- Margarita and Bloody Maria cocktails (for me, of course) Everything was delicious, however...What stood out to us:- Guacamole: we asked for more of the delicious chips so we could consume every last drop of guacamole and quelites- Cochinita pibil infladita: we almost ordered two more before moving on to the next tacos- Eggplant taco with lamb: unique, light and satisfying- Black garlic mole: so complex and rich- Seasonal tomato salad: the most refreshing tomato salad we've ever had. It sits on a bed of white tomato foam. This is definitely a dish we wish we could re-create at home - Chilean Wagyu ribeye: this was cooked to perfection and cut and salted tableside. It was presented with tortillas, avocado, tomato, cactus and salsa so you can make your own individual tacos. Normally, we would want to eat meat of this quality by itself, but constructing and consuming those tacos was an amazing and delicious experience.- Bloody Maria: the best I've ever had and unlike any other. The tomato taste was so refreshing. Wife had to stop me from ordering another.- Dessert: as I said, we couldn't remember the name as we figured we should order a dessert just for the sake of it. Well, what turned out to be a mere afterthought turned out to be the perfect way to end the evening. The flavors of that corn and different textures of chocolate was lovely. You're taken to an adjacent (and fun) room outside of the dining area for dessert. ... I pretty much listed everything, huh?We will definitely reserve seats here next time we find ourselves in Barcelona (we reserved ours about a month in advance for an 8:30 pm dinner) and have several dishes on our list to try when we have less limitations!Cheers and thank you for the memorable Barcelona dining experience, Hoja Santa!

To preface, we likely had higher expectations and hopes considering this was where we ended up but had wanted desperately to dine at Tickets. We booked about 3 weeks in advance for lunch and this happened to be our first meal in Barcelona. We were one of the first tables seated for lunch; we appreciated the introduction to the kitchen staff prior to being seated at our table. We had a great view from our table of the kitchen and staff feverishly at work and the head chefs meticulously quality checking each dish prior to delivering. We loved some of the creative serving styles and will be adapting at home when we entertain (i.e. hot stone to keep tacos warm in a pouch). Our server did not have great English. He mentioned a "we choose for you menu", which we tried to clarify on twice, and we were still left confused. We decided to try it anyway to make it easy on ourselves. We wish our server had explained it's not a prix fixe menu, but rather they choose courses for you and charge you by the course. We ended up with 12 courses, and we really could have lived with 9 because we were so full and really struggled to eat the last couple of courses. In terms of the food, I was actually underwhelmed by the art considering some of the other dishes I've seen in reviews previously. One of the dishes served - apple souffle with young almonds - was just not good. We didn't bother to eat it after a couple of bites. Most of the dishes were so-so, with a couple of standouts - octopus + fresh peas, bone marrow taco, pulled pork taco. Recommend asking the guests if they want their last dish to be a dessert. I would have wanted to try something sweet. We would definitely try some of Albert Adria's other restaurants, but I don't think we would come back to Hoja Santa.

We tried to book Tickets but it just so happened that the week I was i Barca, was the one week it was closed for staff vacations. I had to visit at least one Adria restaurant while in Barcelona so we booked Hoja Santa. It did not disappoint!A truly world class experience from Paco Mendez and Albert Adria. This was the fanciest restaurant that we visited in Barcelona. It was a good change of pace from all the tapas and wine bars that we visited here and it was such a great meal. Definitely the best meal we had here as well and the service was super on point. Instead of going with the tasting menu, we decided to make our own tasting menu and pick what we wanted and what we did not want, since essentially it was just items off the menu and not anything off menu or special. This gave us the luxury of ordering the very best items to try to our liking. Everything we ate was amazing and presented very well. Being from Texas and eating quite a bit of Baja Mexican food, i have had my fair share. The flavors were all very authentic and delicious and would make Mexico proud! Their mole was probably the best that I have had but we will see if that holds up if I get to visit Pujol in Mexico City. After dinner, they take you next door to their dessert room and everything was delicious there too so save some room in your stomach!
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite experience in Barcelona.
Service was perfect. Staff was so friendly and attentive. Food was phenomenal. You get what you pay for. I will recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting Barcelona and I will go back the first chance I get.
Be the first to ReplySuperb; more than exceeded our expectations.
Prices were reasonable and service was outstanding. Well worth whatever we paid, which was not that much! Surprisingly affordable and absolutely delicious. Don't hesitate--make a reservation and enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyBarcelona has so many excellent dining options for all
Barcelona has so many excellent dining options for all types of food. I chose Hoja Santa as one of my stops due to the excellent reviews and the fact that I can't get this type of food at home. Also, I felt like I couldn't go to Barcelona without trying an Albert Adrià restaurant. The dishes were creative and beautifully presented, but I felt service wise we were rushed and up-sold. My flight left nearly 24 hours late. I had only been in Barcelona for a few hours when meal time came. I didn't want to order the biggest course as my body was thrown off from the airport debacle. They have two tasting menus and one has more courses and supposedly more seafood. I don't eat beef or pork, which I put in my written reservation and in the phone call I received 24 hours before where they inquired about it again. I wanted the shorter course option. The waitress kept pushing for the longer one saying it is a better fit for me because of the seafood. I explained my situation and she said it was fine and not really a difference in portion size. I was also hesitant because I'd budgeted for the other course and all people in the party had to do the same one. Before we'd even ordered they started bring the amuse and we pressured to hurry up and make our drink orders. After we ordered, more food came out immediately and didn't stop. They'd take my plate the second my fork hit the table. I know they're on a time schedule, but this wasn't my first time at the fine dining rodeo and when I'm paying that much (and in this case even more than I'd budgeted), I don't want to be rushed. We weren't halfway through when I noticed there was no way I was going to make it through all these courses. Looking around at other tables, I really wish I hadn't caved to the pressure and stood my ground on the other course. At one point, I started to feel sick, probably from eating so much so quickly after not having much sleep or food for a while. I got up to use the restroom, and they stopped me to see where I was going. They asked if I could wait because the next course was on it's way. It was uncomfortable at this point. The food itself ranged from very incredibly delicious to interesting but not something I would choose to eat. If possible I would return just for the coconut dessert. It was so beautifully presented and so fresh tasting and not very sweet. It looked like coconut but was indeed sorbet lining the shell. It was everything a dessert should be and probably the best dessert I had all year. I enjoyed the earlier savory courses with light flavors much better than the heavier later courses. The welcome drink made from cocoa was lovely and so was the crispy corn amuse. Heck, all the amuses were mind blowing. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and flavorful. I didn't enjoy later heavy dishes such as the mushroom tacos or red prawn. They felt so heavy and the flavors were strong ones I didn't enjoy. We only had one drink each, thankfully since there was no more room to consume things. They were good, but not a must have as it was basically a margarita with a lot of foam. As I saw mentioned in another review either on here or TripAdvisor, the dining room had people in it but was uncomfortably quiet. The service and atmosphere was world's different from what we experienced at our other fine dining experiences on this trip. It felt very mechanical and rushed at Hoja Santa. Most of the dishes are tasty, but I felt disappointed service-wise for the price point.
