We ate at Horn on a recent Friday night at 6.
Lines were very short, and the staff were very helpful, professional and pleasant. We were a larger group so could try a bunch of things. The brisket was ambrosial; all of us agreed that it was the best we'd had. We also loved the cole slaw, banana pudding, corn bread and collards. All had a special finesse which reflect care in recipe development, ingredients and execution. Though clearly made from scratch with toothsome texture and a little smoke and tang, we found the beans to be a little too much on the sweet side. The barbecue sauce also leaned too much towards the sweet in our opinion. Most of us also loved the ribs, though one dissenter found them to be too firm. Yes, the prices are high but this isn't your usual barbecue. And I would argue the prepayment system for a reservation, the worry that the food will run out, and the high markup for take out are confusing and a bit annoying. Since I've never been to the French Laundry, I've never had to go through so much to get a restaurant meal. Never the less, the food is very, very good and, we were all really happy when we left.

Brisket is really tender! Pulled pork sando was really juicy. Everything felt a bit fatty- nice to have pickled red onions to balance it out. Thought the hot link and jalapeño was just ok. Pass on the mac & cheese too. We definitely had leftovers! This is the best BBQ I've had Oakland - they earned Michelin Bib 2021 for a reason!

Honestly it's a cool vibe and I know it's all about the experience but I waited in line for an hour and a half, which okay it's fine if the food is mind blowing. But the food was just okay I've had way better bbq from my own backyard. And the prices are just outrageous for what it is. There were three of us and we were all super bummed and didn't even end up finishing any thing we ordered which was close to almost one of every thing in the menu.

Amazing bbq, awesome vibe and meeting the great Chef Horn on top! Couldn't ask for a better experience! Can't wait to come back, the brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage were the stars!

Second time eating here. Had the brisket and some sides. This time had a brisket sandwich with jalapeño cheddar sausage and potato salad and everything was great. For some reason the line seems to move slower than it needs to but also watching them convert the brisket into the sandwich just made me hungrier. Two thumbs up! Also easy to access if you're traveling on 880 as it's close to the freeway.

Good place not recommended for lunch it took me 45 minutes in line at lunch time!!., then they weigh the meat on a scale then ask how many bones meaning how many ribs yes they count it now that being said everything was very very good the corn bread home made was one of the best I've had ever there's a reason I gave it five stars even though I'm complaining about certain things but recommend this place
Be the first to ReplyMy girlfriend and I went to have lunch in there.
This place used to be good when it first opened up but not anymore. The food was so bad that it gave us stomach ache. Told them about what happened but they didn't care to respond. It is also very expensive for such bad quality food.
Be the first to Reply5 Stars all the way!! I've been waiting weeks to come here.
My wife and I came earlier for lunch during their opening @ 11am. There was already a line but luckily we made it in and also got a table. I highly suggest coming here early yo avoid a long line.As we walked inside, I could smell the fresh smoke of bbq in the air. The restaurant is clean and spotless. Each employee knows what their doing and has a specific role. The process is smooth and very efficient. I loved looking at Matt Horn's accolades on the wall; from Forbes, Food & Wine to even Michelin, Matt has articles everywhere! It's fantastic and a joy to see.I went straight to the point with a half pound brisket ($20), half pound ribs ($18) and a jalapeño cheddar link ($12), and 3 small sides of Mac n cheese, potato salad and slaw for ($8) a piece. I loved watching the butcher slice through the meats and do magic by turning the brisket, pulling the pork, splitting the ribs, etc. it was a great sight to see! The presentation is even beautiful on the black tray. Everything is photo esq about this place. The brisket is super tender, moist and just tastes like butter. The meat literally melts in your mouth. I loved drizzling their house made bbq sauce. The sauce had notes of molasses and brown sugar which is delicious. The ribs are juicy and has lots of meat on the bones. Once again, the meat on the ribs fall off the bone! The jalapeño cheddar link tasted so authentic and from scratch. The cheese even melts throughout each bite. I'm a huge fan of their slaw; it balances everything out with the meats. The Mac n cheese and potato salad are also tasty and great side choices. We will definitely be coming back again for more! I really want to try the beef ribs next time. I've been to Kansas City and Texas for bbq and honestly, Horn Barbecue is THE ONE! Best damn bbq I've ever had. Great job Matt!
Be the first to ReplyYooooo this BBQ is no joke.
A lil toke of this and a lil bite of this and I felt like I was transported to Kansas City.
Be the first to ReplyI pre-ordered the Super Bowl special that was including
I pre-ordered the Super Bowl special that was including five different kinds of meat. I ordered 2 1/2 weeks in advance when I got there to pick it up they were out of two of the meats. I had invited people over for Super Bowl party and some were not meat eaters so that was a problem. Also included in the price. I thought it was sides to go with the meat and I didn't find out until I got there that they were not included. So for about $225. I had to go inside to buy some sides so I would have some thing to offer with the food that I Purchased. Everything seemed a little unorganized, and I wouldn't necessarily rely on using them for a party like this. I was just disappointed in the experience and not having enough of what I thought I was purchasing for my Super Bowl party. I did speak with a manager who apologized and promised to get back to me, and I never heard back after two weeks. Lots of hype about this place but I am not rushing back!
Be the first to ReplyI went to Horn Bbq last week for the first time .
I arrived 15 minutes before they opened and there were already about 7 ppl in line. Within minutes there was about 15 people behind me. They opened on time and someone came out and greeted everyone. Once they opened I waited about 10 minutes in line. I'm really big on customer service and they did not disappoint . I didn't feel rushed when it was my turn to order even though there were probably 20 plus ppl behind me. I asked a few questions and they answered them and even gave me suggestions. Onto the food. Honestly this is probably the best bbq I've ever had. I got quite a bit but what stood out the most was the brisket, hot link, potato salad and the banana pudding. I will definitely be back. Looking forward to trying the beef ribs on my next visit .
Be the first to ReplyHorn BBQ tastes great.
I'm not going to taint this review by pretending otherwise. However, the service is a joke. It's non existent. I recently placed a very large order for a party. During pickup (took them nearly 30 min to organize my order even though it was assigned a specific pickup time and I arrived on time). At the end I asked the worker if she double checked that everything was included because I wouldn't be able to return for missing items. She responded politely "it's 100% correct and that's why it took a while to compile everything." When we returned home to plate the food for our party, we realized there wasn't any BBQ sauce included in the order! I've tried at least 5x to reach Horn via phone, email, website. ZERO response. Not kidding. Needless to say... never again.

I knew when I drove past Horn BBQ for the first time at about 10am. and there was a line of eager customers lined up down the sidewalk that something, special was happening at this place. I pulled the quickest legal U-turn available, parked and got my suddenly hungry self in line. The line grew steadily until they opened at 11 but waiting customers were treated with good music, complimentary water and updates on what's on the menu. The BBQ was totally on point and incredibly good. Don't miss this place if you are in Oakland and if your not in Oakland, get yourself there and hit this place up.
Be the first to ReplyWow the beef ribs feel off the bone.
Brisket was great too. Loved it. This gourmet bar-b-q or special occasion only it is pricey. For all those that said it was dry..... not true. Bar-b-q is not supposed to be rare like a steak. Watch some cooking shows to learn more about food/meat. Smoked is different then grilled in a pit. This food is fantastic. I suggest you preorder your food and pick it up. But warning there is still a line so don't be in a hurry when you go there ever. Relax

OK. This was some LEGIT barbecue. And not the California style....like, legit, smoked for hours and hours type barbecue. This spot, and chef Matt Horn, and have been hyped up big over the past couple of years. Being new to the Bay, and a lover of true bbq, I had to check it out.The lines are kind of notorious here, and we went on a Sunday. Yikes. We showed up about 30min before opening and there were like 5-6 people with lawn chairs camped out in front but we were right after them. By 11:00, the line was around the block. But when we were leaving around 12:15, the line was down to 5-10 people. So they move pretty quick and it seems the rush comes in waves. One thing to note: someone two people ahead of us in line bought out like 6lbs of brisket and 6 beef ribs- so it's no wonder they sell out pretty quick. Anyway, onto the food. SO GOOD. You can taste that all the meats are smoked "low and slow," just as they should be. Tried the brisket, spare ribs, chicken, and beef rib. The prices here are pretty high- but the quality is top notch. Brisket had a great, well seasoned "bark" on it that was full of flavor. Perfectly tender. Spare rib was surprisingly amazing. So tender, but it stayed on the bone while you ate it. Which is a good thing. This one had sauce on it already, which I wasn't expecting but also really enjoyed. Great bbq shouldn't need sauce- the sauce should only be another layer of flavor. Chicken was actually very moist and also well seasoned. Don't know if I would rush back for it, but I wasn't mad that we got it at all. The beef rib is truly the star- it is huge!! Of course, it costs $45. The bark on this bad boy was even better, and there is way more of it on the rib. This one was falling off the bone it was so tender, and you want that with a beef rib. I probably would not order it next time due to the cost, but it is def worth trying for a special treat. Because it was special.Couple things: I wish they had cornbread and/or sweet tea. The sides didn't blow me away, but my friends loved the potato salad. Not my thing. Mac n cheese was very good but didn't stand out compared to the bbq. Also, I think sandwiches might be the way to go here if you're looking for value. I saw a pulled pork and brisket sandwich come out on someone else's tray and they looked to be pretty hefty- maybe 1/4 to 1/2lb of meat on each. So good to know for next time.Def recommend this spot. Horn BBQ received the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand award, so while planning a visit to Oakland, I made sure I ordered in advance for pick-up because I didn't want to chance it. After seeing that line I knew I made the right decision, and that it was going to be some darn great BBQ! Well, the BBQ was legit, the service was great, and I'd love to enjoy some more right now! Probably the best BBQ I have ever had in CA, besides some homemade from family but it's the best! Tastes just like what we travel to Texas for. Worth every penny and proud to support local!
Be the first to ReplyBest BBQ in Oakland! This BBQ lives up to the hype.
The brisket is amazing tender and full of taste ! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Horn Barbecue makes their own charcoal! That says a lot right there. The quality of their food is outstanding!! Enjoy!!
Be the first to ReplyI was about to write a obituary for California bbq.
Overall it's pretty weak, then i found Horn. Texas BBQ ok Texas we see eye to eye on meat. I've blown dough on weak bbq but didn't today. Make sure you get enough sauce for your dining pleasure. The meat is smoked and very delicious. I had the brisket, best I've ever had! The cheddar and jalapeño sausage, full of flavor, the hot link, full of flavor the half smoked chicken full of flavor and the ribs full of flavor but far from fall off the bone. Sides i had were grandmas potatoes and smoked beans plus two banana puddings. The sides were average. The beans weren't thick, they were watery but had flavor, maybe needed to be reduced on the stovetop, the scalloped potatoes were ok. I didn't find the meat dry. Everything was as moist as smoked meat could be. Understand smoked meat isn't as juicy as coal or fire grilled bbq. Smoking meat and grilling bbq are not the same process. One takes many hours one is done in about a hour or two. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase about $135 with a small tip $8....for being closed at 5 on Sunday when the website says 8pm. Thanks Mr. Horn do you have a family member i can marry because i need total access to that smoked meat!

I wanted to try this bbq and glad to see they were open and operating as usual. Let me start with my order, Ribs and links, then side of Mac and cheese and beans. I have eaten bbq in the bay before but it came out to $50 dollars just for lunch. I ate my food wasn't impressed with the links, had nice flavor but was very different from usual bbq sausage. The ribs were tender and flavor was good. However, the ribs are weighted out and you don't get that much at this place! Overall I have listed the best bbq being that I am from Oakland and I go back to flints and old school East Oakland bbq!If you in the bay and have a taste for bbq, I have listed the top 3 spots on food bbq choices. Again Horns is just okay didn't think the price was for the taste of the food. Enjoy the bbq search in the bay for tasteful food!Best in bay in Ribs1.Horns2.Smoking Wood3.Evertt(usually serving burnt ribs and meat tough)Best in Links1.Evertt Jones2.Smoking Woods3.Smoking Woods(they are just okay)

If you've eaten here I'm not telling you anything you don't know. It is, by far - hands down, the best bbq! The brisket is the best brisket I've ever had. It's crusty seasoned on the outside, smooth as butter on the inside. Everything else is also excellent. I used to always say I could live as a vegetarian if I had to, but I could never give up Horn now that I've tried it. And it's just as good as the first time, every time. It's worth the wait. It's worth the drive if you don't live close. It's amazing!
Be the first to ReplyThe best barbecue is in California (sorry, Texas).
Horn Barbecue in Oakland is a James Beard award finalist for Best New Restaurant in the country. I waited 45 minutes in line on a Sunday at 12:30pm. And boy was it worth the wait. We came in as a group of 9 and ordered every item on the menu. The standouts were the gigantic beef rib, tender brisket, honey butter cornbread, jalapeño cheddar hot link, juicy pulled pork, smoky chicken, and...ok basically everything. Let's just say I no longer have to go to Texas to get my authentic BBQ fix now!
Be the first to ReplyMove the line faster.
Have more discipline on roles at the counter so 4 people aren't all at once walking around finding things, bringing out food, opening containers, and not actively serving. It's pretty easy to see they could significantly increase the heads per minute when there's a line. Look it's good tasting and good quality (not at every day meal), but it is pricey and wasteful. At least at this price point I wish they'd use compostable containers and cutlery instead of all the plastic.
Be the first to Reply~$70 (incl.
Tax+tip) for pictured. Was enough for two adults. Brisket was very very good, I'd probably go for just a pound of that next time instead of getting multiple meats. I wasn't dissatisfied with anything on that tray, happy to have tried it all. A special occasion meal rather than an every week thing. It's as good as I can find here after visiting Texas haha.
