Andree was the best
Our second time dining, still amazing but added to by Andree looking after us. We had the best time!

Possibly the worst Chinese meal I have ever had. Ambience was great, service good but the food was reminiscent of Chinese restaurants I went to when I was a impoverished student many years ago. We had the Chinese New Year menu - donโt! Terribly disappointing.

I was taken to Hunan by English friends. it was Chinese New Year and a set lunch menu. A fantastic selection of ten dishes. wonderful skills and flavors. wonderful service and every dish was a masterpiece. STRING BEANS WERE OUTSTANDING. frogs legs excellent. The first dish of chicken soup was wonderful flavors. I enjoyed every dish and if youโre in London, try to get a booking. you wonโt egret it.

From the presentation to the taste, the food was fresh, delicious and innovative. The wait staff was accomodating, kind and explained the dishes presented seamlessly. Hunan makes you feel at home, despite being miles away. This was my first meal in London and definitely set the stage for a great trip. Worth every penny.

This is one of the most unique meals I've ever had. Was so impressed by our initial outing that I've been back a dozen times, bringing new patrons each time. Both lunch and dinner have never disappointed. Writing this review is making me want to make another reservation as I think about each course coming out, tastier than the last. Lovely family owned and operated establishment. Highly recommended.

My previous visit for lunch was really good but this time dinner was very disappointing. Overall food was uninspired and not interesting with in my view (and of my party) lack of variety. When first guest arrived the table (booked for 7) wasnโt ready and then they tried to sit 7 around a table spaced for 6 and didnโt seem that happy when we complained. Waiter who looked after us was a nice guy but lacked knowledge of the food when questioned. Sad as we had looked forward to this visit with family from Taiwan! Donโt think we will be rushing back especially at this price.

We just had a wonderful dinner at Hunan in Pimlico/Belgravia. Threeโs no set menu. Based on diner preferences, meals are a series of 10-12 tasting plates consisting of a variety of delicious and original Chinese dishes. Our line-up included a wonderful delicately - flavoured soup with scallion, chopped pork, mushroom and and egg white, a tiny bao, in a clear ginger tea, pork belly on a bun, spicy beef with ginger and scallion and Peking Duck. Veggie dishes are available. The staff is excellent and busy as they move around the room bringing dishes to tables. The restaurant is beautifully appointed and tranquil with a lovely hum of chatter. Reservations are necessary. It was full tonight.

Outstanding Chinese restaurant in a beautiful area of london, highly recommend this restaurant for the food, ambience and the staff are super attentive too.
Be the first to ReplyNon-authentic ripoff
With our experience of Chinese cuisine as a Hong Kong Chinese and an English long-time resident, we found the standard of food very disappointing, and that it did not come close to justifying the extortionate cost. While the first and one or two other dishes were quite good, the standard deteriorated to the point where we could not tell whether it was seafood, meat or vegetable based, and all had a similar oily taste. The final dish of so-called crispy duck leg was so dry as to resemble cardboard.

Michael, the owner is always wonderful to us and Richard his general manager is too. We cannot really fault anything at all, super food, good wines and a lively atmosphere, all in all it is our equal favourite (I know we can only have 1 favourite) with Andrew W in Victoria. VERY good job M&R keep doing what you do.

The food was okay, the same you would expect in a standard Chinese restaurant - definitely quantity over quality. The price was extremely over inflated - we spent around ยฃ110 a head, sharing one bottle of wine. Underwhelming.

I went to Hunan with my girlfriend and am sorry to say I have left feeling beyond disappointed - to the extent that I felt compelled to create a tripadvisor account just to write this review, from my toilet with an upset stomach. We opted for the โlet us take care of it menuโ, as Hunan purported to be an eating experience with a personalised menu - both couples either side of me were eating the same dishes in a different order? The sauces on every dish were the same, lined with a thick gelatinous film, which were unpleasant and left my girlfriend feeling sickly and sluggish The quality of the dishes was perhaps the most perplexing thing about the meal (second to the price). The venison tasted particularly bad and my girlfriend had to spit it out. The meats were cold and the prawns were rubbery, which is unexpected for a restaurant that charged ยฃ240 for 2 people. The price is really what kills me here. I am in a state of shock as to how the management have the self belief to charge people ยฃ120 a head. They say the menu is 18 courses but what theyโve actually done is made a batch of standard Chinese starters in the kitchen, put one spoonful on a plate and served as an exclusive tasting course - truly offensive and almost impressive. We both looked at each other and laughed at just how deceived we felt. We would have been better off going to the Good Earth or Singapore gardens or royal China or literally any other Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to in my life - we would have paid far less for way more. The tasting menu guise was clearly a way for the restaurant to extract as much as they could from unsuspecting patrons in search of authentic Chinese food. I will never be returning.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. The quality of the dishes is amazing. I like the concept of small plates but many courses.

One of the best restaurants I have been too.
Food was great, love the tapas style, service and staff were first class.
Wonderful gastronomic experience
Heard many fantastic reviews of this established restaurant and liked the concept.
But being on our doorstep it never felt like it being a proper night out. Decided to finally give it a go for a anniversary celebration.
The welcome and staff were excellent. The dishes were an absolute delight. Unexpected flavours and textures. There wasn't one dish that we didn't love. The only downside was the crispy duck, perfectly prepared and tasted delicious which we both love but paled in comparison to all the other dishes.
I really wanted to try the supplement dishes but we were too full for even dessert.
If you want an exciting meal out it's definitely the place. We'll definitely be going again.
Also the music being played was a really nice range of modern covers and was just at the right noise level to be background.
Thanks for a great evening
Ok if you need to learn to be like second hand car dealer
Ok small little place with a little art and white table cloths All simple and clean, sat down had a glass of house white wine not to bad, guest arrived and it took a little time to get his wine, when he did the .. I guess the head waiter said sorry hears a big glass and the taped him on the shoulder.
The food was ok in fact some of it rather good but the odd behaviour of the head waiter was more like a second hand car salesman on a car lot in the east end every fing all right lads type of carry on.
Our waiter was great, if they can get Jon the car dealer out the back .. we will be a ok mate.
Overhyped over priced
We went to Hunan the first time last night for dinner for my special birthday celebration. We knew it was an experience restaurant and were expecting the food to be outstanding. How wrong we were!! Each course was like some some ordinary Chinese dishes presented in tiny quantities. Many dishes were either bland or under seasoned. The pastry of a fried dumpling was hard and uncooked in places. We ordered dover sole (with a hefty supplement) and half of it was raw. We had to send it back. The best dish was black cod, which several notches above the other dishes. Unfortunately we only had a little of it. Many dishes also had similar taste, which made it a rather uninteresting experience.
The service was actually quite rushed, although they did re-do the fried dumplings for us (still not that good) and did not charge us for the dover sole. The place was poky and had no atmosphere. You do wonder what the fuss is about this restaurant.
Delightful Asian Tapas
Wonderful varied Asian cookery. Taylored to your likes. Lots of dishes but didn't feel bloated.
When asked how spicy you like the food we said medium but should have said mild as lots of chilli's.
Back section a little cramped, especially if a party of 4. Suggest they invest in round tables to create more space for the customers. Would definately visit again.
Highly recommended.
Good experience
The service was excellent and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great, overall we had a good time but there were quite a few improvements that could be made.
The food was on the most part good, driven by the quality of the ingredients and the huge variety (especially the amazingly fresh seafood). However, I couldn't shake the feeling that the flavours were a bit lacking and while we were enjoyed it, we were not wowed as the menu price led us to expect.
The restaurant itself is charming although a little dated. On going to the bathroom area I suddenly felt like I was in a standard Chinese restaurant in Chinatown and there was no sense that place was charging Michelin star prices. It may be worth returning to for lunch at some point but the value did not feel great for dinner.
Not what youโd expect from a ยฃยฃยฃยฃ restaurant.
To the Manager/Owner at Hunan,
We have previously emailed Hunan with no response.
We recently visited Hunan to celebrate our anniversary, although our experience was not what we had expected. When we arrived we were greeted with good hospitality and taken to our table ready for a great Chinese based dining experience. The wine menu held an extensive list of well priced, good quality wines. The venue is small and intimate which suits it, although the toilets are very run down and need some TLC.
We were aware of the high price point on the restaurant so expected food to match. What let our experience down was the quality of food in general. The food was not what we had expected, there was a lot of grease and oil on most of the dishes and everything felt a little sickening. We know the restaurant dosn't like waste however we wasted a lot of our food. It was like a bottle of sweet chilli had been used without hesitation. The blackened cod is an exception to this; it was great. Overall however, the food didn't really live up to the standards you would expect for a ยฃ285 meal - it was clearly quantity over quality.
My girlfriend and I left Hunan, happy with our evening together and a lovely bottle of wine, but disappointed with the food/price ratio and the quality of food. We just felt full of greasy low quality food. Later in the evening my girlfriend did not feel and unfortunately through the night suffered from severe vomiting throughout the night - we believe highly likely this was from the food at Hunan; mussels, lobster, pork, cod; greasy food etc.
We have never written anything like this before and understand it is not what a restaurant wants to be told, but we believe we need to share our experience. As aforementioned, our review is mainly dervived from the very high price in comparison to our experience and my girlfriend being very unwell and in a horrible way which I wish on no one.
We would be very grateful if Hunan could review our experience with care.
Exceptional on every level, every time - 5 stars *****
We have been fortunate enough to visit Hunan a few times and without fail, every time, we have been blown away by the experience - amazing food and wonderful service. Staff are attentive without being overbearing and can't do enough to ensure that you have a great time. As for the food, the variety of dishes and imagination behind what is created is magical. From tempura battered green beans (my favourite) through to black cod, sticky lamb and pork in a bag - you will not be disappointed. You really have to experience the variety to get any sense of why Hunan is one of the best restaurants in London. Thank you Michael and JJ for making our recent visit so amazing!
Be the first to ReplyGood but could be improved
Tasty food and good service, although better for non-veg than veg food.
The majority of the veg courses were made of tofu which got a bit repetitive and disappointing - I would have expected more variety in terms of ingredients. Also, for an 18 course dinner at Michelin star prices, I would have expected one of them to be a pre-dessert and another to be a dessert. But there was just one dessert of banana fritters, which felt a little basic.
That said, we appreciated the sparkler they put in the dessert for my partnerโs birthday and everyone singing happy birthday to him.
Overall, it was a good dining experience and my non-veg partner would happily return for another meal. I would return if they brought more variety into the vegetarian courses and improved the dessert experience.
