Hunan Review
I always walk by this place, and have made many mental notes on how I need to try it due to the inviting cozy-modern architecture and the crowd who frequents here. They were a Michelin guide recommended restaurant in 2020 and 2021, not sure what happened last year smh. I honestly don't know how that works at all so I could be so ignorant on that. I walked in without a res one evening and was seated immediately. Table for 1 perks. Menu is completely digitized, which has become my major gripe post pandemic but I get it. The menu is a bit confusing on how to navigate and could be improved. I got the Slurp Classic Lu Fen, and it was exactly what I was hoping for. The perfect amount of kick on the spicyness level and just an overall phenomenal combination of flavors. I don't even know how to categorize this noodle dish, but I loved it. There is no broth it is just like a noodle based bowl. I have overdosed on ramen a bit and this was a great switch up.

What I would give to have this kind of restaurant in Texas (fat chance).
Authentic, simple, fresh, well made - Good chinese food is not complicated, but youโve got to start with the right ingredients and know what youโre doing. The zucchini was something else, more like a squash - perfectly cooked in garlic. The chicken in ginger was juicy and tasty. Cucumber salad was refreshing. I would skip the blue crab unless you like a sweeter sauce and navigating crab bones.
A simple atmosphere, perfect for lunch. Great service.
AND, you can bring a bottle of wine for $15 corkage fee! Thatโs a good deal in NYC. There is a wine list though if you donโt want to bring a bottle in.
So so so good!
Hidden gem!
I could not love Hunan Slurp more....After reading a glowing review in the New York Times and living only a few blocks away, I had tried to get in on two other occasions but it was packed but finally I went early and managed to get a table and I had one of the best asian meals ever.
Stir fried cabbage, fresh whole fish with spicy sauce, string beans with pork meat in a soupy noodle bowl, and the supreme tofu in a clay pot....everything was just perfect and hearty for a freezing rainy day.
The room is airy and beautifully decorated and the service was perfect and very attentive. Noise level is good.
Hunan Slurp keep it up!
I will be back for sure!
Beautiful new Chinese restaurant in East Village
Hearing this name you'd probably never guess what the restaurant looks like. It's in a small space like most NY restaurants, narrow glass front extending deep in back. However the decor is beautiful and artistic. Quite a bit of Japanese esthetics from the linear strips of bond wood paneling on the wall, marble tabletops to the crafty ceramic dining ware. This is a BYOB place, so no bar or alcohol on the menu. For a small space tables are quite well spaced, with regular and communal tables. Glassed in kitchen in back. Menu not extensive but has interesting items, we had the cucumber and sweet and sour ribs for starters, both excellent and super tasty. These are two dishes you might see in a lot of Asian eateries but the ones here are better than most. Had two rice noodle dishes - in exact regular spaghetti shape - as these seems to be the signature items - the pickled green bean one is the better choice - the pork one less flavorful. Also had the ginger chicken which was ok, very tender but not my favorite dish (I didn't order it so might be prejudiced there). Overall out of 3 new Chinese restaurants I tried this time in the East Village this one is way ahead in every way - decor, food quality and taste, and ambience (with a mixed groups of diners instead of the almost 100% Asian at others). A bit pricier but worth it. Better still, they also take reservations which makes planning much easier.

Beautiful place and helpful staff but terrible food. Avoid at any cost. Spare ribs over cooked and much too sweet. Tofu dish tasted only of tomato. And eggplant was over cooked and had been waiting for us for a couple of days.

Many of the appetizers and main courses at Hunan Slurp turn out to have the direct, intense energy that youโd hope for from a stylish restaurant with a Hunan-born chef. Many, but not all. The bowls of rice noodles, though, are consistently impressive.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting noodle dishes.
Interesting selection of dishes, nice decor and good service. I had a bowl of noodles with ground pork and crispy green beans. The noodles were very good and the pork with small pieces of green beans had a very interesting texture but the dish was not as spicy as I had expected. I will return.

I was initially impressed with Hunan Slurp's venue and space. The sleek and modern design makes you wonder how good the food is. The rice dishes are probably best left alone. However, the noodles definitely did not disappoint. The appetizers were also quite delicious, especially the eggplant. The price point definitely seems a little inflated, but I can see that the hype won't deter visitors.

Came here based on a great New York times review and it did not disappoint at all. According to article this is authentic hunan food which is hard to find. It was certainly different from any Chinese I had tried and i like to nerd out on traditional Chinese food.
The restaurants recommended dishes are mostly noodle dishes in broth, kind of like ramen, but with unique Chinese flavors. Expect spiciness for sure, you will sweat. But itโs a rich, deep, multi-dimensional slice that I loved.
The home style noodle is a must try. The pork and peppers was great too, but quite hot. The spare rib app was a nice start.
Also, the prices are great for New York! Ran less than $25 per person.
The 2 Chili is really hot but wow what a taste!
This is a very modern style restaurant, clean and pleasant. They specialize in noodle dishes. the food is very artfully presented and extremely tasty, but the 2 chili one is very hot! The one chili is spicy but not unusually so. We were a part of 4 and everyone agreed that the 2 chili dish was the most tasty. The waitress was extremely pleasant and helpful.
I had the vegetarian dish which was beautiful to look at but was not as flavorful as the other options.
