..to FINALLY Experience his interpretation of cuisine was the BEST!!Now... let's get into it! Many of the comments speak of how long it took to get a reservation..well this is DC babe...sooo it only takes something new and hot to hit the scene and we locals are on it! Nonetheless...My reservation was at 8:15...running late...made it just int time by 8:27...and I say this because on OpenTable a reservation fee is required to book and if you miss that 15min window..your spot is lost and you are out $35...mmmkkkFor the most part, the reviews I have read have all basically said the same regarding the layout and the dining room environment. I did appreciate the fact that complimentary champagne was provided while waiting to be seated. My table was in the back directly across from the KITCHEN!! So it was AMAZING to watch the chefs hard at work. Tobias was there and even came into the dining room area to speak with several of the patrons. Started the meal off with the Huncho deviled eggs!! Huntie -- that bacon jam!! Yaazzzz, I need that in a bottle..please and thank you. We also ordered the Jerk Short Ribs (I'm not a fan of them from anywhere, so there is no comment from me), Rockfish stuffed w/crab and shrimp as well as a side of the Crab Mac & Cheese. The rockfish was not bad tasting but to me, it had a "fishy" taste, so yes I know its fish but the taste of the ocean was strong. The filling and rice risotto was tasty. The crab Mac& Cheese was good, ok. Now --- this part:At no point and time did our server mention palate cleansers, also it appears as though as soon as we sat down the waiter was asking us if we were ready to order. He did not give us more than 3 mins to review before he came back again. We ordered drinks that did not come out together or were anywhere near close in time. The table next to me actually arrived 30 mins after us and had their drinks before. Our crab mac& cheese (side) came out wayyyy before the entrees, now I get it that for some the mac can be a side or a main, so I think the servers need to ASK if the person would like this as an app, side...etc. I prefer to eat my side with my entree. Lastly, there were several gnats flying around, now I know that bugs get in and out but this was several and the table next to us joked about her pasta with a side of gnats. So with that being said - I will return once the DC "HYPE" about this place calms down. Glad to have had a chance to dine here!!

Top line points: FANTASTIC food, service, and ambiance.
I absolutely 100% recommend coming to Huncho House for date nights, intimate dinners, etc. Also recommend taking the time to book a reservation if you can!Food: my partner and I had the wagyu egg rolls, lobster rigatoni, bone in Hawaiian ribeye, lobster mashed potatoes, and brussels sprouts. Every single thing was delicious and I would definitely get it all again. The steak was beautifully cooked, the rigatoni was delicious with little bits of lobster in every bite. I also had the "rare gem drink," which was very good. I think my partner had a Japanese cocktail which he said was also very good. I was so full by the end of my rigatoni, I did not have room for dessert, but I would have tried one of them if I did. My lobster rigatoni actually came with a lobster claw that had some meat in it, and I genuinely appreciated Anaya, Our waitress, who was so patient and kind and attentive and sweet. I have never opened a lobster claw before and asked for a tool to do so. And when I didn't fully know how to use the tool, Anaya helped me.Service: top notch. When I walked in the door to check in for my reservation, the hostess was very friendly, and informed me that there was complimentary champagne. I was seated quickly, and when my partner arrived, he was seated very quickly as well. Every single waitress and waiter was so kind and attentive. All without being over bearing. as I mentioned, Anaya helped me with the lobster claw, and she was the best. Thank you Anaya!Ambiance: the vibes! Intimate, great music, everything, relaxing, and a little bit grown and sexy without raunchiness.Looking forward to coming back!

I FINALLY MADE IT -- and just in time for my 800th review!
I FINALLY MADE IT -- and just in time for my 800th review! After eyeing it for months and wondering when I'd miraculously be able to get a reservation, I made it! Pro tip: I don't recommend a party larger than 2 unless you want to really fight people on OpenTable. I was able to snag a reservation just a week in advance! My friend and I arrived right on time, and they immediately offered us a small glass of champagne. Awesome! Before we were led to our table I took it all in. Overall, dimly lit -- the existing light came from outside, the bar, and the open kitchen. The bar is fairly small, and has no seats... so no bar seating for you!As we were led to our table, that's when I noticed that the kitchen is quite open -- I observed everyone hard at work (including Chef Tobias himself). There is a row of 4 seats right in front of the kitchen... I believe that's the Chef's Table (you can book that for $100). My friend and I were seated right next to the kitchen, so it was cool looking over and seeing how they operate. The menu was delightfully explained to us by Dre, who gave us his top recs. I got the jerk lollipop chicken, Huncho fire roll (sushi) and shared lobster mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts with my friend. Let's break it down:-Jerk lollipop chicken: simply delicious! Great texture, great flavor -- the jerk had the balance I love!-Huncho fire roll: stellar presentation on the slate! Had a nice kick to it too, so I get why it's called 'fire'. Lobster mashed potatoes: delicious, but BUTTERY!!! Not good for my arteries, but worth it.Brussel sprouts: Crispy and flavorful.I had two cocktails as well -- Good Money, a tequila-based cocktail, and Yasuke, a whiskey-based cocktail, which I HAD to get for the name. The main flavor profile for Good Money was cucumber, and mango for the other. Both drinks were surprisingly strong -- super delicious though.I would recommend everyone to not be discouraged by the struggle of getting reservations -- I think it's worth it in the end. I noticed that whenever a dish would hit the counter to be taken to a table, the person dropping it off would flag someone down if they weren't already nearby. I appreciate the desire to not let dishes just sit on the counter... delivery while fresh is key! I would recommend they get a bell or something to be an indicator though -- I've seen other places do it. Oh, they were playing old school R&B the whole time, classy! I was surprised I spent less than $100. I'll be back!

So often we hear that black owned restaurants do not give good service or a quality product. Let me tell you, Huncho House delivers. The food, service, and portions were all great. I must admit, I was not anxious about going here, but let me tell you about being pleasantly surprised. If you can get a reservation go! You will not be disappointed. The only negative for me were the drinks. They were a bit overpriced for the size.
🙂
Talk about a great night! There aren't many places in
Talk about a great night! There aren't many places in Hyattsville that you can go to and get a high end expierence, with great food. Huncho house delivers although it is quite expensive.I had reservations on a Wednesday night at 7:30. THEY ARE RESRVATION ONLY for those that are not aware. There is pay to park street parking but not much. There are two garages. The one near the Safeway offers 2 hours of free parking. We arrived ontime and they delivered ontime. From the outside everything is completely blacked out so you might think they are closed but they are not. Complementary champagne upon arrival. It's really two gulps though. We were quickly seated. There are about 20 small tables for two inside Huncho house. A small bar with about 6 high top circular tables. There is a 3/4 person bar in the dining area but I'm not sure who sits there or how you get there but you have a direct line to the cooks. (This used to be a five guys, turned into a carry out and now Huncho House). They have done well for what it has been. Paris was our waitress and quickly took our appetizers and food orders. The appetizers came out PIPING HOT! The shrimp were huge, spicy and DELICOUS. The devil eggs were a little small but come with shrimp and bacon. Odd concept for me. I enjoyed the fried shrimp more than anything. The cheesesteak eggrolls were a little over cooked to me. I'd leave those alone. Now onto the main courses.I ordered the lamb chops were cooked to perfection. Fell right off the bone. The green beans were fresh and delicious. I just wish there were more than 8-10. The side crab Mac was on fire. I'm glad I listed and didn't immediately bite in. I do however wish some of the crab meat were cooked inside the max and cheese. The jerk crab cakes were gone from my mother in laws plate before I could look up. She said they weren't spicy and she would definitely come back for more. The lobster in the mash potatoes were good as well.Overall this was a nice experience and I'm glad it was brought to the Hyattsville area. If you haven't been, I highly suggest. Thanks Huncho for the treat.

Ahhhhhhmazing! When you arrive you are greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne. I loved our waitress. Her name was Devin. She was able to explain the entire menu and she recommended her favorite items. We started off with the apps. We ordered steak & cheese egg rolls and oysters. Amazing! Before the main course you are offered a paletye cleanser. This was my 1st experiencing a plate cleanser, but it was worth it and it's free. The pallet cleanser reminded me a sobert . For the main course I we ordered the short rib and pasta mezi. Please go on an empty stomach. The food was good and hardy! I had more than enough food for the next day. I also loved the decor in the restaurant. If you're looking for a intimate date night spot or somewhere to meet up with the girls I would recommend making a reservation.

I would say for those struggling to get reservations to
I would say for those struggling to get reservations to check open table everyday. I was able to book a table 48hours before my planned dinner on open table. When arriving you are offered champagne, which I loved. Everyone was so friendly and Tamika was our server I highly recommend her if you visit. For starters we ordered the crispy Asian shrimp (6/10 taste like a simple Thai chili shrimp), the California roll (3/10 the rolls fell apart as we were eating them. I eat sushi multiple times a week and have used chopsticks for over 6 years, this was not user error. They just weren't rolled tight enough.), and the charbroiled oysters( these were a solid 7/10 but there were pieces of shell inside the mixture). For entrees we ordered the snow carb garlic noodles ( 8/10 these were the most flavorful), Asian Glazed Salmon Fried Rice ( 0/10 everything was overly salty. When I think of something glazed I expect some level of sweetness but there was none. It was just really unbalanced. My sisters salmon was the same. It was salty but it also wasn't consistent in flavor to my plate), crab Mac and cheese (0/10 there was no flavor to the crab or the Mac itself. It was a pile of grease and missing seasoning, my sister had the regular Mac and cheese and it was the same), mango lemon drop (0/10 very unbalanced, didn't taste any mango or anything to cut the flavor of the alcohol. I also asked for my lemon drop to be made with tequila and it was still made with vodka. We ordered drinks before we ordered starters and my drinks did not arrive until my entrees were already on the table. We also ordered a banana foster cheesecake and that was a solid 8/10. It was pretty good for cheesecake. I also ordered the jerk lollipops but they never came. I wanted to love Huncho House so bad but I ultimately feel like the flavors were not worth the price that I paid. I don't mind spending the money but if you're going to charge Michelin star restaurant prices I expect Michelin star quality and consistency. I still recommend you try it for yourself, your experience may be different than mine but ultimately I won't be back for a while to allow them time to figure out the kinks and fix some of their pain points. I attached a copy of my receipt as well.

So yummy! The space is smaller than I thought but the food
So yummy! The space is smaller than I thought but the food and prompt service made up for it. Dre took good care of us. Keep checking the open table app for an open reservation slot. I made this reservation in late December of 2022 for today Sat 3/4/2023. Worth the wait.
😍
Everything was incredible.
Complimentary champagne when you walk in the door. My wife and I had the deviled eggs and wagyu cheesesteak egg rolls for appetizers. Both we delicious!! For the main course my wife had the scallops and I had the jerk short ribs. I would definitely order them both again. For dessert we had the banana foster cheesecake...all I can say is it was next level good. It should be on the show The Best Thing I Ever Ate!! My new favorite restaurant easy.

Ok, let me start by saying that many of the initial issues, e.g , no cocktail menu, lack of alcohol, etc, seem to have been resolved. From the moment we arrived and were greeted with the champagne at the door, we received EXCELLENT service. Our server Tamika was AMAZING! Let me say this, I have patronized restaurants all around the world and I have NEVER received better service than the service we received from Tamika. It was definitely worth giving her an additional tip to the automatic 20% that is added to the check. The food was cooked to perfection. Everyone at our table is a foodie with discerning taste and found nothing to complain about with the food or drinks. I will note that the Charbroiled Oysters menu description did not mention that it contained a great deal of cheese, which may be important to many people who can't eat cheese. Tasted great, but definitely an important oversight. I would make a suggestion, ( ok so here comes one criticism) the Huncho Mac and cheese needs more seasoning and something else. It is underwhelming and unfortunately I am comparing it to Uncle C's Chicken and Waffles.Chef Tobias was in the kitchen so it was great to see him working!

So we luck up in getting in this spot they were booked
So we luck up in getting in this spot they were booked until April however some Cxl popped up on open table to we took advantage. This place is all about ambiance and experience talk about beautifully decorated. It's intimate not to many tables, modern furniture, perfect lighting (like they knew what you need to take a great selfie), and earthy with plants hanging the ceiling and placed throughout the restaurant. The service is astounding, we were greeted with champagne selection at the door then ushered to our table. The staff are very professional this is a complete upscale experience and perfectly gourmet. Everyone one who passed our table greeted us to ask if we needed anything. Our waitress was sweet with a gleaming personality and she was well versed in the menu to help us make the right selections and pair appetizers and drinks. My date ordered the steak egg rolls for the appetizer and for his main he had the steak with the mac and cheese and I had the whole red snapper..when this food came to the table good gosh.. talk about perfect looking food and generous portions. The presentation is art. .. and the taste!! I enjoyed every last bite we took some home to enjoy the next day. Who doesn't love good looking food that taste great. Don't let the $$$$ deter you this food and dining is well worth the experience. We didn't meet the chef but I believe he was wondering about the place.. I will return so there's more opportunity to congratulate him on this black owned gourmet dining experience that is well overdue in PG County
😍
Great introduction to soul food
Lovely restaurant When visiting the US a few summers ago with scouts we were staying at the university nearby We decided to come here for our dinner on the first night and the whole staff was very welcoming and interested in our experience All the food was very tasty and the cornbread muffins with butter and syrup were especially nice
😒
Decent service Limited selections
I have been to Carolina Kitchen once before and I had excellent service and food. But this visit was just bad service and for some unexplained reason limited selections of drinks and food items. The first problem came when I ordered a Manhattan and after 10 minutes the waiter said they didn't have the ingredients for a Manhattan. Now this is a very basic cocktail. So I ordered a Vodka and Tonic.... but that drink took 15 before I received it. And No the restaurant was not anywhere near full. We placed our order and the food came out pretty quickly.. No problem there. When the time came for dessert... we asked for the dessert menu. When the waiter returned he read from his note pad only about 4 out of say a possible 12 items for dessert with no explanation as to the shortages. None of the four items appealed to any of us. So we just asked for some coffee. Then..... wait for it... we were told no coffee.... not given any explanations just no coffee. Clearly not their best night... Definitely not going back anytime soon, if ever.
The staff were so attentive, it would be difficult to find anything to complain about. My salmon entree was recommended and it lived up to its description as supplied by our waitress. A very pleasant evening had by all.
