The food is great! We always order the braised fish in sweet chili, snow pea shoots, mustard green fried rice and sour fish soup. It's our go to! The portions aren't a super big but you can share it with 2 people! Service is nothing to call home about it's fine. They aren't rude so that's a plus. I would say Hupo is comparable to the restaurants in Flushing! It's my go to spot when I want Szechuan food, I go probably once a month. 10/10 would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyBest chinese food in the area.
Very authentic and consistently quality every time we've gone.
Be the first to ReplyWe ordered in from Hupo the other night and found the food
We ordered in from Hupo the other night and found the food to be decent. Their scallion pancakes and steamed shrimp dumplings were very good and flavorful, and the dipping sauce was delicious - a perfect balance of sweet & sour. I was really excited to try their mapo tofu, but to me, this dish fell flat. It ended up being a soupy, greasy, mess of tofu without all of the good flavors that you expect.
Be the first to ReplyFood was good and tasty! The decor is nice as well.
It was a bit chilly inside, I wish the dining area was a bit more insulated. The staff were really helpful and the service was outstanding. Need to return and try the other items on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyI was here with one of my usual groups.
The service was friendly and the food overall was excellent which isn't surprising judging by the other rave reviews, the Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the fact that their sister restaurant (Shan) is pretty close to me and is similarly very good though the menu is slightly different. They share the same outstanding chili oil and the flavors were pretty consistent between them in terms of the dishes I've had at both (outside of the much better mapo tofu here.) I would say the prices there are a little bit more but the portion sizes are a bit bigger but at both places you have to order rice which is an unfortunate common add-on at fancier spots. To drink, I got the Time Flow/似水流年 consisting of Jiangxiaobai BaiJu, Suze, Elderflower Liquor, and Lillet Blanc and like most other cocktails was pretty reasonable at $15. Consisting entirely of various alcohol and aperitifs, the drink was strong but still delicious and I would recommend it for someone who wants something a little bitter. They gave us some pickled chilies to begin with which was nice while we were waiting. Our first appetizer was the Century Egg with Pickled Peppers/泡椒皮蛋 and it consisted of preserved duck egg with pickled pepper and it was $9. The appetizers here are tiny compared to the main dishes but it will still tasty. Nice mix of sour and heat and I liked it as usual. The Mapo Tofu/麻婆豆腐, a "delightful trio of peppercorn, pork, and tofu" for $16 arrived soon and was a lot better than the location by me and I can see why people order it here specifically. Just a note that for people who prefer a firmer texture for mapo tofu (which is something I prefer also usually,) this is more of the silky variety but it was very good for this style. Only other complaint is that there wasn't much pork either. The Tea Smoked Duck/樟茶鴨 or Zhangcha Duck with "haunting tea-smoked flavor, well-rendered, tender meat" is $18 and was my favorite dish here. You can probably blame my heritage or something for liking such a strong smoke flavor but this basically reminded me of duck salami and I loved it. Very tender meat and the best version of this dish I've had. It was served with some mantou/steamed buns. If you're looking for a mix of said delicious duck as well as some other things to perhaps reduce the smokiness, I would recommend the Sautéed Duck with Ginger/薑爆鴨絲 consisting of "shredded tea smoke duck, sauteed with greens and ginger" for $24. By comparison, the pieces were a lot thinner and the ginger and greens made it lighter by comparison. I preferred the former slightly but they're both tasty. For $23, the Spicy Cumin Lamb /香辣孜然羊 is as it is described; "Fragrant, intense, and full of fiery chile." It tastes very similar to the version at Shan though I would say maybe that the pieces of lamb were bigger there but I think it was a bit more expensive there. Would recommend heavily as well though I would be careful if you're not that big of a fan of spice as this is probably the spiciest dish I've tried here and the cumin flavor is very strong. The Crispy Fish Fillet/香辣魚片 "sauteed with fried red chili, decorated with cilantro" for $21 is also excellent. Very tender fish with a good amount of mala. The Chungking Spicy Chicken/重慶辣子雞 with a "crispy outside, tender inside, plenty of peppercorns and dried pepper" was $22. It's probably a broken record to say that the final dish was also good though I personally prefer the version at Peppercorn Station in Manhattan but there was nothing wrong with it at all.I decided to get their Hupo Ice Jelly/冰粉 for $8. Also known simply as bingfen, this is a southwest Chinese dessert consisting of "cold crystal jelly with brown sugar and peanut, hawthorn powder, and raisin." the version here is lighter than most other versions as I would say that the brown sugar syrup wasn't as pronounced. I slightly preferred the version at Shan but it was still pretty tasty. We left pretty much stuffed at the end of the night being very satisfied with the meal here. I'm not sure if this is my favorite Szechuan restaurant but it's definitely up there and I will be back likely pretty soon. Upper four.
Be the first to ReplyI was craving for some spicy food and I expected I would
I was craving for some spicy food and I expected I would get some authentic Szechuan food from this restaurant. Honestly, I was disappointed. The interior setting is neat and clean. The waiters are very nice too. Here are the dishes I got: for appetizer- sweet and sour baby ribs, Szechuan garlic pork and Ma-la Szechuan Wonton; for entries- spicy cumin lamb and tea smoke duck. The reason I can say they are not authentic Szechuan food is because most of the dishes tend to be sweet rather than spicy. They are more like Shanghai style or maybe they designed the flavor for American customers. For sweet and sour baby pork ribs, sweetness overpowered sourness. The meat is hard to chew, apparently overcooked. It is barely spicy flavor in the garlic pork. Ma-la Szechuan Wonton is ok but somehow there's also some sweetness in the sauce which is strange to me.Cumin lamb is decent just a bit salty. Tea smoke duck is not recommended. I'm not sure what style or flavor they are trying to make for this duck. The meat is dry and no flavor and outside skin is hard and a bit burned. Overall, it is a nice place to hangout, but if you want authentic Szechuan food, this may not be the best choice.
Be the first to ReplyMy go to lunch spot once a week.
I am aCreature of habit and go back and forth ordering spicy stewed fish and the kung pao chicken. My husband go to dish is the beef with shredded green peppers
Be the first to ReplyI'm always craving spicy food especially authentic Szechuan
I'm always craving spicy food especially authentic Szechuan food - I am so happy I've found Hupo because their food hits the spot!! I've not only come here in person multiple times but I've also ordered for delivery when lazy and the quality of the food never changes. I also love that I don't have to drink copious amounts of water after meaning they don't use bagloads of msg and are adding actual seasoning. I love the decor of the place - really reminds you of a cafe in China. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food. Some of my go to dishes are their eggplant in garlic sauce, cold noodles, garlic pork, dry pot, filet fish in spicy sauce and their mapo tofu! You really can't go wrong with the Szechuan dishes here! Deff give it a try whether dining in or for take out (obvs dining in is the best choice!)Check out my foodsta @chiuventure for a closer look and more details of my dining experience here as well as other establishments in NYC and around the world!
Be the first to ReplyMichelin quality for very affordable prices.
Highly recommend.

Amazing food and great taste! We have been twice to this place and we love to order the small plates to share like 'tapas' so we can taste a variety of dishes.

This. This is the kind of gastronomic delight I would want you, Tourist, to experience when you visit New York City. For all you resident New Yorkers, especially all ye peeps of north Brooklyn, Hupo is in our delivery radius. Godspeed.I'm not going to beat around the bush here - the chengdu cold noods, Dan Dan noodles without the meat, the steamed fish fillet in hot chili soup and a kung Pao chicken. Make your own rice. This is definitely not your American Chinese takeout order, although they appear to have those options too. This is the real deal, the way Chinese food was made to be. The fish fillet in hot chili soup is heartwarming and so incredibly satisfying. I could slurp it up without the rice but the carbs makes the dish last longer. I'm looking forward to trying nearly everything on their menu, but I'll pace myself. It's an expensive take out order but it's worth every penny.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is always great here.
I rellay love their DanDan Noodles and their Spicy Chicken.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place so much I basically get takeouts from
I love this place so much I basically get takeouts from here once a month. Highly recommend the eggplant in chilli sauce, they flavored the eggplant really well. If you are a fan of everything with mala chilli, this is the place in LIC. Their milk tea is also great as well, very strong tea flavor.
Be the first to ReplyFood was good and flavorful.
Got the seafood pancake, Dan Dan Noodles, ma-la or chongqing dumplings (?), and fried pork potstickers. The dumplings were the best. The Dan Dan noodles were good but honestly better the next day as leftovers once the noodles absorbed more of the sauce. 1 star off due to to-go packaging not being sealed very well in the bag
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Sichuan places in long island city.
I recommend this place if you want Sichuan in lic. My favs are mapo tofu, but rice is not included with the price.
Be the first to ReplyGot the smoked tea duck fried rice and shrimp with broccoli.
I can't eat spicy things so I was a bit limited by the menu here but the two things I did try were super flavourful! No idea how they do tea flavoured smoke duck but it's amazing.
Be the first to ReplyGot takeout from here and overall was pretty solid.
The stewed fish fillet in hot chili soup was really flavorful and delicious! Kung Pao chicken was pretty good, beef and broccoli was very good, wonton soup was good too, I'd just say the dumplings were pretty standard, tasty but nothing special which is probably why it's a 4 and not a 5 for me (if I could give 4.5 stars that would be the perfect rating). Would definitely order from here again though.
Be the first to ReplyWe made a reservation for 6 people, but couldn't get seated
We made a reservation for 6 people, but couldn't get seated until 45 minutes or so as they had overbooked. After some insistence, we did get free drinks while we waited at the bar - I don't remember all the names of the cocktails, but the rose lychee seemed to be the most refreshing. The clove/egg white drink had a very milk texture but I got sick of the flavor after a few sips.Rice is $2 a bowl, and you can always order if you need more. Some of the prices on the online menu are also outdated. The standouts to me were the szechuan garlic pork ($12) - very tender and flavorful in a way I hadn't tasted much before and the tea smoke duck, which I have had before but this might be my favorite rendering of it ($18 - full of smoked flavor and tender; it comes with 2 buns). We also got the chengdu cold noodles ($9 - not a must-have, I'd try the dan dan next time), grandma's tofu ($17 - it was just alright too), chungking roast whole fish ($40 - they light a fire under to keep it hot. The fish itself was tender, and I appreciated that they had other things in it like tofu skin, mushroom, peanuts that you can pick at), double-cooked pork ($20 - good, but alright), green beans with ground pork ($16 - I really liked this as a vegetable dish to balance out the meal, and there was plenty of green beans). The chungking roast fish had the highest spice level (4), and while it was indeed spicy, it was not overwhelming at all. I was hoping to get some true heat from at least this one dish. I'm not a 'spice warrior' by any means, but I do like spice, so my two cents are that you shouldn't be too afraid of the spice levels on the menu and order the '3' level dishes if you want to.

I came here the other night and ordered takeout: a beef and broccoli dish and some Dan Dan noodles. The noodles were extremely savory and tasty, and the sauce was just the right amount of sweet. The beef and broccoli was just as yummy and the meat was really tender.Solid restaurant and will definitely visit again if I'm in the area again!
Be the first to ReplyI have been to HUPO a few times in the past year, and it is
I have been to HUPO a few times in the past year, and it is always very good. The food is very authentic, and it is definitely a welcome addition to to the neighborhood. The restaurant is quite small, but they also offer takeout and delivery, which I have utilized in the past.I have tried the following dishes:Eggplant with Garlic Dressing (4.5/5): Very good (cold) eggplant dish. The garlic sauce is a bit oily, but incredibly flavorful. The eggplant was cooked very well. When I went in person, everyone I ate with loved this.Scallion Pancakes (4.5/5): Very nice scallion pancakes. Standard, but great.Bamboo Shoot with Pickled Peppers (3.5/5): Decent bamboo shoot dish. No complaints here, but wasn't my favorite either.Wood Ear with Pickled Peppers (4/5): A tasty wood ear dish, with a little zing from the peppers. Definitely not too spicy though.Snow Pea Shoot with Garlic (4.5/5): Great vegetable on the side of the meal. The vegetables were fresh, and the garlic was subtle.Mapo Tofu (vegetarian) (4/5): A great mapo tofu dish. It was appropriately spicy, with a lot of tofu and went really nicely with rice.Stewed Fish Fillet in Hot Chili Soup (5/5): This is one of my favorite Szechuan dishes, and this one does not disappoint. There is a ton of fish in a warm, oily chili broth. Very tasty.Chungking Roast Whole Fish (4/5): Very good fish dish. It's enormous, definitely for sharing. I do prefer the fish in hot chili soup, but this was also very good.Fried Rice with Mustard Green Shoots (4/5): Very nice fried rice, goes great on the side with all of the mains above.I have enjoyed all of my meals at HUPO. It's definitely worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyUpdating because I finally went in person! I can't say
Updating because I finally went in person! I can't say enough great things about the staff. They were kind and attentive. The drinks were very good- I recommend the meet with impact and spring scent. The dandan noodles are a must get! My group also enjoyed the chungking fish and tea smoked duck, though both have bones so are a bit more work to eat. Worth it for the flavors though! We also liked the spicy cumin lamb. The only thing we weren't wowed by were the vegetable potstickers. Great stop and I highly recommend it!

Came here for Lunar new year and we're thoroughly impressed with the food and service. We had the chungking chicken, spicy sautéed shrimp, fried rice /w shrimp and chow mei fun. It was all great and the servers were so kind. Will be back.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is pretty good.
A bit hit or miss, but largely very good. The delivery service is terrible -- In the past 5 months, I've had 4 order never arrive, despite the delivery driver texting and saying he delivered it and Seamless marking it delivered. If I choose DoorDash, it arrives every time. Clearly the delivery person they employ routinely does something fishy, as each different DoorDash driver has made a correct delivery.

We ordered for anniversary meal and received all the sides and no entree which was the duck! First time and last time! You didn't want to lose the sale now you lost the customer.
