Just OK but you are paying for the view
This is the second time we have eaten in a restaurant at the Shangri La. After the first we vowed never again, but memory is a funny thing. We booked for lunch to scope out a room for a special birthday dinner. We left, a lot poorer but wiser that we wouldn't come back. First the food - or rather the water. Please don't serve tepid tap water. The food was ok to good . Vegetable spring rolls, excellent. Prawns, dumplings, mango pudding and rice were good. The chilli chicken was overly salty and crispy beef too sweet. The set menu for lunch was fairly good value - we hadn't come for the view. The alcoholic drinks are priced at the ludicrous end of the spectrum. Champagne at £28 a glass. The mark up on wines is about x 5. Service was good The whole restaurant was shabby, and the toilets clean but worn. It probably looks better at night. So - who should go? Firstly those who just want the experience of eating at the Shard and those who don't drink alcohol. The restaurant was booked for lunch by those on expense accounts, tourists and those celebrating a special occasion. We won't be celebrating mine there.
Be the first to ReplyHutong over priced and not nice lobster
The view was lovely . The veg spring rolls and fried rice was really nice . The tofu was very soggy . My partner ordered the lobster which was over priced and he threw it up the next morning
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great view and great service
We went for a really nice dinner at Hutong and were really pleased with our visit. We got a nice table with a great view (although it was rainy/cloudy) and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. We had a set menu with 9 courses and it was well worth the money. The starters, a selection of dim-sums, was amazing, especially the lobster one and the Iberico pork. All the courses tasted great, the crispy duck was fantastic, and the wagyu steak was very tasty as well - albeit a bit spicy. The server was very attentive. Overall a great experience and boujee in the best way.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience, great food
Quality and taste of food exceeded expectations from menu description. The poached chicken starter, pork and cucumber starter, and spicy sea bass were firm favourites
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meal and great service
Went to this restaurant for a birthday meal, the food was delicious and the staff were so attentive and welcoming. The dumpling platter was small but the quality and taste made up for it, rest of the meal was great. The cocktails were amazing too!

Lovely dinner with family, fantastic table by window and attentive service. We had signature menu which offers a good sample of different dishes though I’d like to sea soft shell crab included in that choice. The wine pairing was most enjoyable too so overall a great night in an atmospheric restaurant. I really felt I was back in Asia with the city lights and decor and loos with a view!
Be the first to ReplyGood but not memorable.
Well for a first sitting on a Sunday evening these guys must have given us the best seat in the house, breathtaking views, a secluded spot, thank you management. We watched other later diners in the middle and back of the room, so not what you would come here for at all. The staff attention was great, the service good, I’m not sure if all are happy in they’re jobs but training seems effective. Drinks powerfully priced but here we are in the capital so very expected, the food.. As advertised a Northern China flavor so we looked forward to something different and we’re with the signature menu. I’m not going dish by dish but will say it wasn’t memorable and questionable as ‘signature’. Felt like the same old served most days without passion. That aside the dessert was a hit. Précis: Head of house are absolutely spot on, service is very okay although smiles are few but regrettably the food doesn’t live up to the anticipation or the image, position is notable and if your lucky enough to have a table on the rail the views are second to none. Without that spectacular table I’d have been un impressed.
Be the first to ReplyThank you Momo super sommelier
I was your guest on Saturday 11 March for dinner. I wanted to thank you for the pleasant evening but above all to congratulate you on the impeccable and professional service of Momo your sommelier. Momo accompanied us throughout the evening making us feel at home and advising us on orders with great skill and sympathy. it was a fantastic dinner mostly thanks to him, we will definitely be back
Be the first to ReplyB-Day Surprise was a success!
Julia at Hutong made our day special and made us feel really welcome! The food was amazing and passion fruit martinis were to die for! I’ll definitely be back again!

Had a beautiful time at Southwark Hutong with my parents. Jason the waiter who took care of us during our visit was brilliant and very patient with us, as a true gentleman even offered my mother a small birthday cake for her birthday. Couldn't have been happier with the experience and fully recommend to others.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular View , excellent service .
The most spectacular view in London . You just reserved , usually several months in advance . Excellent staff . We had the (moderately private) meeting room , which was perfect for a business dinner . Food was excellent especially the King Crab and Sea Bass . Ample selection for those vegetarians dining also .
Be the first to ReplyBeijing cuisine with an exceptional view
We went for the signature lunch for two. Every dish was impeccable in presentation and taste. This is high class, authentic Chinese cuisine (including the complimentary chilli oil which you should ask for). The duck is succulent and carefully-roasted, the kind of which you get in upmarket establishments in Beijing along with a certificate of quality (if you’re looking for crispy roast duck, forget it). The portions are pretty good and I appreciated this (pre-concert) rather than coming away feeling unnaturally full. On service and for presentational value, I think it would be better to have Chinese waiters/waitresses in traditional costume (the ambience is pure Beijing with statues, wall features and red lanterns). We had a table by the panoramic window on a glorious sunny day and the views were spectacular. Overall, a fabulous experience.
Be the first to Replybad service
there is no services .without you finished starter ,they pass on mani dishes . as the restaurant become busy for dinner , they just want you leave quickly!
Be the first to ReplyGood ambience, oldish food but not great service for the price
Visited with family - been here before : the views and the ambience are great but looks a bit in needs of a change I think. The food is ok - some good and some not great - lots of cold selections of starters. Wine/cocktail was good . A bit down on the service - seem to be in a hurry, a bit of a food place vibe - not the one you expect for the price you pay
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food and Outstanding service
Our meal was excellent, could not fault at all. Everything we had was 10/10. However the service needs a special recognition, the waitress who served us was outstanding. She knew the menu inside out, including the wines on offer, she made alternative suggestions to foods for our children that were not as spicy and picked us out the perfect wine, she really was exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience
The views are unbeatable, even if you don’t have a window table, there’s always something to look at, there’s part of the kitchen where you can see the food being prepared which I always think is a nice addition. The staff were 50/50 There were some who were not so friendly or helpful and then some who were super helpful and seemed happy to be there! The food, we had the signature menu .. the dumplings were incredible, probably the best Iv had. The rice was some how impressive which is hard because it’s just rice! But this was superb. We had the duck wraps which were lovely but possibly go for something a little “diffrrent” as the other dishes we had were beautiful and just nice to have things we wouldn’t have necessarily choose. Peanut and garlic Bol Choy, huge chillie prawns and wagu beef in a chilli broth (broth is yummy but very spicy so beware) … I don’t associate Chinese restaurants with good desserts BUT the chocolate tart with mandarin sorbet was absolutely delicious, the pastry was perfect and thin, the chocolate inside was rich and smooth and the sorbet was amazing. I’d go back just for that! We chose a wine off the wine list that they didn’t have any more but the sommelier recommended a similar one which was the same price and it was perfect. Ribbon wood sav if your a white wine fan! This won’t disappoint. Pricey but you expect this at a restaurant in the shard! Great experience.
Be the first to ReplySuperb. Don't be deterred by the poor reviews.
Ignore the poor reviews. I was a little apprehensive myself after reading some of them, having had It booked a few months previous to celebrate my partners 40th. I was almost at the point of cancelling. The whole experience from start to finish was superb. Food was excellent and I couldn't fault the service. Don't forget your not just paying for the food, your paying for the location, an amazing view of London along with superb surroundings and decor of the restaurant its self. When it comes the the bill, do some research before hand and make sure your happy with the prices. Atleast then you know what to kind of expect.
Be the first to ReplyWill not be returning
I really didn’t appreciate being herded like sheep for our 12 noon lunch booking. Whilst I understand the importance of security however there was no need to shout at people waiting. Especially not if they were paying customers
Food was very underwhelming. My local Chinese takeaway meals are better. I suppose the place is over priced due to the views. Then again a huge part was cordoned off and our table for 2 was in a tiny corner by some massive mirrors so it felt a bit claustrophobic and difficult to relax in.
Service by our waiter Jason was great though. I don’t see us returning.
Delicious
Had an amazing evening at Hutong, we decided to go with the signature menu and can completely recommend it! The favours and tastes were out of this world! Great service, friendly and professional team. Definitely want to come back soon
Be the first to ReplyIt's not your local Chinese take-away experience!
Getting in is a bit of a palaver! Airport style security with x-ray machine and metal detectors, a lift that whisks you up to the 32nd floor where there are 2 other eateries/bars and then a flight of stairs to Level 33 to a very dark interior with red lanterns.
All tables are over-looking some bit of London and its a magical experience, trying to work out simply by lights where everything is. We seemed to include half the waiting staff as well at one point in this challenge - google maps were shared!
Dishes on the menu are not what you will experience at your local Chinese take-away! We went for the Red Lantern Soft Shell Crab with Sichuan Dried Chilli (top tip check what you grab out of the bowl, as its filled with scotch bonnet chillies and you don't want an unpleasant surprise!), Aromatic Beef Rib in Lotus Leaf, Sichuan Style Aubergine Tempura and Green Asparagus dressed with White Sesame along with a bowl of jasmine rice all washed down with a bottle of Gruner Veltliner.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend.
The hutong bar is the best place to have a pre dinner drink 💙
Couldn’t get a table at the last minute for dinner here on a Saturday night, but that’s not surprising as it is an amazing restaurant, but I was still able to get a drink in the bar area, and I don’t think there is a better place to have a pre dinner drink any where better in the world! The view of London from the shard is the best. Staff are amazing.
Be the first to ReplyExtremely disappointing
Obviously the view is the first impression of the restaurant, but when we sat down it was at a cheap, varnished table with cheap glassware. We ordered the Peking Duck starter (whole duck as there were 4 of us). All Ican say is that it must have been a very small duck! The standard of food was absolutely no better than we get at our local takeaway, in fact, the duck at our local takeaway is better! The dim sum were lovely, but that is honestly the only positive thing that I can find to say.
Be the first to ReplyIt's Chinese, Jim, but not as we know it...
The pluses... fabulous views, especially if you can get a window table (we requested one, but didn't get... well, that's pot luck - or who you know - of course). Our waitress was wonderful - humorous, attentive, perfect. That's more or less where the good points end. The chairs were very uncomfortable. The tables rather cafe-like. Then we come to the food. We went for the signature menu at £59 per person. The dumplings were rather glutinous - one each of three different types, all dreary. The duck... oh dear, the duck... love-a-duck, just not this one! The pancakes were dry and tasteless. The duck itself was disappointing. In future, I am going to stick to Gressingham's half a duck, with hoisin and pancakes - beats Hutong's hands-down. To the mains - rice (nothing special), 2 pieces of prawn per person absolutely covered/drowned in breadcrumbs, green beans and the only saving grace of the meal - beef tenderloin. However, by the time we got to the beef, it was stone cold, due to the fact that no heating trays were presented with the food and all the mains were placed before us at the same time. A dry chocolate tart with a strange taste, served with a mandarin sorbet saw an end to a very expensive, very disappointing lunch. The cheapest bottles of wine are around £50, but few at that level, quickly rising to eye-watering levels. Our bill for the 2 menus, a bottle of water, a cheap bottle of wine and service charge came to over £200. I wouldn't mind if the food had been enjoyable, but I have had better from our mediocre local take-away. Glad to have ticked it off my list, but that's about all I can say.
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant but waiters forgot a main course and desserts
My family's trip to Hutong was great, however one of main courses and the desserts did not show up. When we requested the main that the waiter had forgotten, he said the kitchen was now closed. The food that did come were absolutely incredible.
The entire restaurant itself so cool, from the old style bathroom doors, to the lanterns in the hallways and the amazing views! Hutong did an incredible job of letting the views do all the work, the dimmed lighting ensures no reflection blocking the view.
The waiters did not push us for time, we stayed from afternoon to night moving from the restaurant to the bar.
