One of the best Chinese restaurants in New York
We had gone to this restaurant in the early 80's, when it was very nice but not fancy. It is now REALLY fancy. The food is fabulous, but it is much more expensive than when I was younger. Phenomenal food, very friendly service.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service , good but not great food
Unfriendly hostess , waiters Waited half an hour for water Waited half an hour for plain jasmine rice after the mains arrived- no apologies offered No one came to ask how the meal was We were very happy to leave and can safely say this was the worst dining experience ever
Be the first to ReplyI’ve never experienced anything like this before 🤯
Hwa Yuan exceeded what we could even expect. As soon as we walked in the door with were welcomed by the most friendly staff and the chef as we walked to our table. Everyone was so delightful and open to provide their(and the chefs) recommendations. We got the house wontons, pork soup dumplings (oh my god these were delicious), shrimp dumplings, vegetable friend rice, fish special (I forget what kind of fish it was) and of course the Beijing duck! Every. Single. Bite. Was insane. The Beijing duck with the crepes was so amazing, they cut it up at your table for the full experience - and the fish in the bean sauce really blew our minds. I absolutely will be back for this again next time I’m in NYC. If I can give any advice - get what the staff recommends ;) you won’t be disappointed :)

My first time here and I have to say it’s probably the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. Service was tops!!!!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Experience
We enjoyed our meal at Hwa Yuan. We shared the cold sesame noodles and the crispy beef; along with the pork belly entree. All were very good. My main comment is that we wished that the pork belly came with more vegetables, it came with only 4 small pieces of bok choy. For the large portion of pork belly, it simply was not enough. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing! A very beautiful space. The wait staff was very attentive, and for us they did not hover over us. We arrived at just the right time; we were able to secure a table without reservations, food served promptly, and then we were on our way. We would recommend this restaurant to others; yet as we continue to try other restaurants in the area, not sure we would return. There's a lot of great restaurants in New York!

Three of us went here because the cold sesame noodles were said to be the best in New York. They were the worst cold sesame noodles I've ever had. The pasta was incredibly soft and the sauce basically tasted of soy, so boring. There was no hint of sesame oil, garlic, peanuts, or any green garnish. The shrimp dim sum had tough rubbery dumpling dough. Chicken with Chinese broccoli was a meager portion with the chicken pieces floating in oil. There was no other taste, simply chicken, broccoli and oil. The Szichuan eggplant also lacked flavor, not even a hint of spice. The waiters are hovering and trying to sell you Beijing duck or additions to your order. We didn't finish our food and were asked if we'd like to take the leftovers. We told the waiter that we didn't like the food because everything was very bland. He laughed and said he would remove the eggplant from the check. I think we got a different menu from the Asian diners. There is a star on the menu with the words Michelin guide. Being in the Michelin guide does not mean you have a Michelin star. In addition to the blah food, the prices are high for Chinatown. This place is a hoax. I felt ripped off when I left. It's the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to in NY.
Be the first to ReplyGood upscale Chinese
Good, mostly familiar Szechuan dishes. Sesame noodles and seafood are the best things on the menu. Service was excellent. You pay for the decor.
Be the first to ReplyLarge business group
Quasi NORMAL Staff still in masks. Hopefully by choice and not being forced. Did a business dinner with 4 very full tables upstairs. They accommodated us nicely. We did so many courses. Everything was amazing. They even sliced duck table side. Great Chinatown experience.
Be the first to ReplyThey are unreliable They ruined our New Years by cancelling our order
We place an order days in advance for The New Year and they cancelled it without apology or answering their phone or email. They ruined our celebration. Buyer beware
Be the first to ReplyExcellent authentic Szechuan cuisine
We've ordered takeout from them several times. The food is always excellent. It is our go-to spot for Chinese takeout.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful Food
Great food and people. We loved every meal we ordered but the duck and the crispy beef are must try when at the Resturant. We enjoyed the wonderful team work. Clean and pleasant atmosphere. Many smily faces as you walk in to the Resturant.
Be the first to ReplyWe ordered too many dishes
We ended up with too many dishes, at the encouragement of the waiter. We ordered the Beijing Duck, Crispy Beef and Hot & Sour Soup for two people, and he advised that we didn't have enough dishes, and encouraged us to order 2 more. It ended up being way too much food for just two people, which was wasted since we couldn't take it with us. Crispy beef was excellent. Tangs Amazing chicken was so-so. Beijing Duck was good.
Be the first to ReplyOur Best Meal on our Recent Visit to NYC
My family enjoyed a big dinner at Hwa Yuan. The wonton w/chili sauce was a unanimous favorite. My favorite was the Kung Po chicken, which is rightfully noted to be one of there premiere dishes. The crispy tangy beef was excellent. The hot and sour soup, cold noodles, sizzling beef w/scallops were all above average items. The scallion pancakes, chicken lo mein, bok choi, and soup dumplings were very competent. I would definitely recommend a visit.
Be the first to Replyover priced, decent duck and appetizer but falls short
This restaurant caters to mostly non-Chinese so that sort of gives you an idea about the food...
The Duck, 7/10. The skin was a bit under cooked and unfortunately the very important pancakes were dry and floury. The condiments of cucumbers, scallions was pretty lame. The price... way on the high side.
The appetizers were very good. The dishes were refreshing and well made.
The entrees... 5/10 at best. All dishes were fairly bland. The ma-po tofu was so-so. The pork belly was just poorly made, flat out but the shrimp was ok but for the price, it better be.
The service was very good but if you want real Peking Duck in Chinatown, NYC, we are still looking... The Peking Duck House on Mott was also a bit disappointing the last time we went. I think these Duck restaurants started to cater to mostly tourists so prices go up and when the locals don't go, then the quality goes down. Not sure, can't figure it out...
Quality Take Out
Enjoyed the Sesame Chicken and the Sweet & Sour sauces. Enjoyed the ease of ordering and the speed of service.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Chinese Food
Found this place by accident as we were in the area and I found a parking space in front of the restaurant. With COVID I do not eat inside but it was 2 pm and no one was there. I thought the food was excellent. The chicken in garlic sauce was phenomenal. I do t eat dark meat chicken so they used only white. Very accommodating. Want to take my daughter who lives in the area when this nightmare is over.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food. Ignore negative reviews
This is just high quality food and I'm guessing only available for delivery due to the sad state of pandemic. Get it while you can. Awesome soup dumplings that held together without having a grossly thick wrapper. Great wine chicken. The best sesame noodles. Thank you for continuing to serve delicious food!
Be the first to ReplyExtremely Disappointing!
On the basis of a New York Times feature, we picked up two of their 'specialities": Cold Noodles in Sesame Sauce and Beijing Duck. Both favorites of ours. Both here were extremely disappointing. The noodles were flaccid and were tasteless instead of pungent and spicy. The duck was a very poor imitation of the delicacy we have enjoyed so often elsewhere. The duck meat itself was fatty. The duck legs not crispy at all. The skin also lacked every semblance of the crisp, inimitable most featured element of this dish. The pancakes also were stiff and flavorless. We would never go back to this restaurant!
