Had a great experience with this restaurant yesterday.
We ordered the vegetable lasagna that was featured on the NYC Restaurant Week To Go menu. Sadly, the chef smothered the lasagna with tomato sauce (which my wife cannot eat), when the item description and site photos shows no sauce. Well, mistakes happen, but what's more important is how they're handled. Nicola was very gracious -- not only did he remake our order, but also included a generous surprise! Oh, and the lasagna was amazing too. Worth the trip. We'll be back again.

Really great place with amazing handmade pasta! They give each table their focaccia and ciabatta with ricotta to start with (definitely a level-up from your normal bread and olive oil)!We started off with some really great appetizers (the fritto misto was my favorite). I then got the anchovy and saffron gnocchi which was perfectly al dente and paired so well with the sauce! Handmade pasta really makes such a big difference, and it definitely elevated the whole dish. We ended with tiramisu and we got two additional desserts for free! The waiters were so welcoming and attentive. They explained each dish and patiently helped us decide on our orders. Truly a gem of a place and I'll definitely be back :)

Giving an Italian restaurant in NYC, one that's been around for some time, such a bad review is unfortunate & painstaking, but this is necessary so others don't ruin a precious night out like we did.-Atmosphere - they put you in a back room. It's fine. The main dining room is empty though. That was telling of what was to come.-Food - the bread aside, I Truli made the worst Italian food I've probably EVER had in this country. No joke - cruise ship food is better. We ordered these mini calzones that were definitely bought from Costco and under-fried. The pasta tasted reheated, cheap, and had freezer burn. The lasagna was so bad I had to send it back. They gave me gnocchi in meat sauce that was bland & unappetizing. My girlfriend had spaghetti & meatballs (2 meatballs for $25, by the way) and it tasted like ramen accompanied by the most acidic, manufactured sauce likely found in the back of an off-brand grocery store. Our friends aren't complainers, but one had a couple of bites her oriecette and pushed it aside. Note, we're all over 30, so this isn't typical behavior. Nothing we consumed felt home made, fresh, or cooked with any effort whatsoever.-Drinks - the Negroni was so sweet it tasted like cough syrup. Gross. The Aperol spritz was mostly club soda. Even getting water was a process. -Service - yes, this is a tough time to hire, but the waiters weren't good communicators. To top it off, the owners / managers were sitting at the bar hanging out! Hey guys - your food is awful. Go in the kitchen and save your business. -Price - NYC is expensive, but I've had way better meals at Upland (down the block) and L'Artusi (one of the best Italian places in the Northeast) for less. For that matter, I'm born and raised here and even the mediocre places we've tried were 5 star restaurants compared to I Truli. Buying ingredients and cooking at home would have been a better move. I'm embarrassed to have invited my girlfriend and friends to a place like this. 1/5 is generous. Will never be returning. Save yourself the headache and frustration.

When I say i Trulli perfectly nails their al dente pasta dishes, I truly mean they achieve perfection. I don't know if Nonna Dora is still hand-making every pasta dish that comes out of the kitchen here, but it sure tastes like she is.My friend and I came for Restaurant Week. For $39, you get a choice of appetizers, entree, and tiramisu. For appetizers, we each had panzerotti; the menu describes these as mini calzones, but they were more like little empanadas to me. They were deliciously fried pockets of tomato and salty mozzarella. I had the orechiette with rabbit ragu entree, which came with perfectly chewy pasta and a delicious, well-balanced ragu. The tiramisu dessert was also delicious, although I had to pack it to go because I was stuffed.

For restaurant week, I had the fried squid appetizer, sardinian gnocchi, steak, and tiramisu.Fried squid was crispy, but a bit thickly breaded. The gnocchi was a smaller portion than I expected. As an extra pasta dish for $10, I suppose it was not an extra main course. It had a nice texture, and the saffron did come through, but only when I specifically looked for it.The steak I asked for medium rare. It came out more as a rare. Luckily, I was okay with that. The steak was nicely seasoned, and the salad it comes with provides a nice contrast that cuts through its richness. It was also nice to have a no-carb dish given all the bread and pasta we were having.Tiramisu: fairly standard, nothing special. I had a "drink pairing" with this suggested by the bartender of a special liquor that was spicy and sweet. I'm not very knowledgeable about alcohol, and don't remember the name, but I liked the liquor, and I don't usually like liquor.Everything was pretty average or slightly better than average - the only thing that was objectively a slight mistake was bringing a rare steak when I ordered medium rare, but it was still a good steak. Service was great and attentive.

I came with my family of 8 from Houston, TX and was really excited to try nonna doras pasta. Seen all over facebook and instagram. Some of us wanted to share a plate and they refused us. I have never heard of this in any restaurant. I'm quite ashamed of their attitude. i'm sure the pasta is 5 stars but first impressions make a difference.
Be the first to ReplyReally good pasta with a good bite.
Loved the orecchiette in a rabbit ragu sauce. Great spot for a romantic date, ask to sit in the "garden". Tiramisu was pretty decent as well.
Be the first to ReplyOK but the value of the culinary experience didn't come
OK but the value of the culinary experience didn't come close to justifying the price. I ordered a fish filet and was picking little bones out of every bite. The fish (the nightly special) was fresh but was somewhat bland, so the bones are what I remember most. Wife had ravioli - perfectly al dente - which were much better and that is what I would get if I went back; pasta and a salad. Wines were very heavily marked up ($20-25 wines on their list for $90+) but maybe that's typical. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Restaurant Week Takeout--One if the Best! We have taken out twice; Pastas, cavatelli with broccoli rabe & almonds & spaghetti & meatballs. Each entree is comes with a choice of appetizer & dessert. We opted for the tomato & arugula salad and kale salad with pecorino & pine nuts. Portions sizes are ample and everything was delicious. Really impressed.
