Interesting but disappointing
In Situ features an interesting concept set in a nicely designed atmosphere. The staff is exactly what youโd expect from a restaurant with a Michelin star, too bad the food does not deliver on the level one would expect.
Everything except the wonderful dessert was entirely unmemorable, and I must say I did not care much for the country music and occasional yodeling soundtrack.
Generous portions and amazing tastes
First time eating here, trying out during SF Restaurant Week. Exceeded expectations in 4 ways:
1) Decor: Fittingly for being within the SF MOMA, the design was beautiful AND peaceful/tranquil. Loved the low, leather-sofa style seating, which made it feel home-y, didn't have to shout over any music to have conversation. Thank you for that.
2) Food Quality and Variety: Excellent to have Prix Fixe inclusive of 3 appetizers (chewy-moist bread w/spread, fantastic squash soup, tapioca fried bites), then 3 courses (had fried chicken, pickles and salad, and dessert). Very innovative cocktails, too.
3) Portions were very generous...frankly I was full by mid-course, each dish was so plentiful...I thought the SF MOMA type of meal, we were going to have to hit Chinatown afterwards, haha..
4) Service was gracious and friendly. 20% service charge included in bill, no further tips needed.
Great meal, looking forward to the next time.
Good lunch venue at MOMA
Had high expectations since I had a fabulous experience two years. Menu has changed quite a bit to suit the Asian palate, but food standard seemed to have dropped. food was too tasty for my liking. Service is still warm and laid back as always. Will still recommend to do lunch here while you are at MOMA.
Be the first to ReplyWe randomly stumbled upon
We randomly stumbled upon this place during AGU 2019, what a find! The food was delicious, the bread was also worth the 200 pennies it cost. They have a cool concept of serving meals from different chefs in some of the most adorable plateware and silverware I have seen in a restaurant. Will go back next time I am in San Francisco for sure.

How could this restaurant get rave reviews? Pancake lipid soaked and could only taste the pepper. chicken satay was just ok and the lettuce part of that dish soaked in with an undistinguished cream sauce Dill brined cabbage was a sodden mess, with little care given to presentation and/or preparation . Things seemed to have been prepare beforehand or??? I just couldn't figure out why it was so mediocre particularly with many rave reviews. The adjacent JR exhibit made up for the meal.
Where have all the good chefs gone. At least it was only lunch. Certainly won't go back for dinner. But, it appears as if the menu is the same. Staff was young and ernest,
Poor service ,strange vibe
We have eaten at museum restaurants frequently so we had a certain expectation. This is a recent addition to SFMOMA, at least since I was here last. The waiter started by explaining that the descriptions of the dishes were on the back of the menu. We were here for a small lunch, and ordered three small plates to share. After 30 minutes the first arrived. 10 minutes later he asked how we liked the soup, but we hadnโt been served yet.asked for bill, but it included dishes we werenโt served. My daughter left. I waited and had one dish, asked to cancel the remaining order. Took another ten minutes and three people to get bill paid. I suggest skipping this restaurant. If you go to MOMA eat inside the museum. If you are in the area, eat at Samovar in Yerba Buena Park, or Fang on third stree.

Creative dishes. Enjoyable. Open kitchen and knowledgeable and attending staff. Come here for experience rather than traditional dishes.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food - less fabulous service
The food at this restaurant within the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is fabulous. It's sourced from great restaurants around the globe, so very interesting conceptions of food, very artfully prepared. It really is worthwhile for this reason alone - and the wine list, too, is full of interesting grapes and places.
So what's not to like?
On our visit, a variety of "front-of-house" problems. We were brought a repeat glass of wine for some reason. We had trouble getting gluten-free options (in San Francisco, the capital of snowflake diners? Really?) The server promised he would "ask the chef," but not much came back. It's hard to believe the chef who can duplicate an offering from a 3 star Michelin restaurant in London, Core, cannot figure out what to serve someone with an allergy - we think the server didn't ask. We had to chase servers to get a dessert offering to come out - we spoke to three different servers, trying to track down our server, and watched as, after assuring us "we'll take care of this," we watched them walk by our server without a word. One of our table finally had to actually stand up, and go physically find our server to get our dessert out. Finally, as often happens at middle-to-lower tier restaurants, we had the desperate challenge of paying - how to get someone, anyone, to get us the bill, and, ultimately, take a credit card for payment.
So, pick your experience: if you are satisfied with stunning food and indifferent service, this is a great place (and hence the four stars, not three). If you think of higher-end restaurant prices as requiring proper service theater, then you may need to find another place for the $$ required.
We wish this place well - just worth getting someone front-of-house who knows how to monitor and train the staff, perhaps.
