PROS
Great service
big open, light filled space
you can specify the firmness of your noodle
excellent cooked food
Good portions
Convenient location
CONS
maybe it is a style thing but broth did not hit the mark for me
So, we walked over after seeing the Kay Sekimachi exhibit at Berkeley Arts Museum. I had seen many many good reviews of Ippudo so had high expectations.
The cooked food - Shishito peppers (perfectly crunchy and seasoned just right) and gyoza were very very good. The ramen broth needed to be richer, a little saltier and alot hotter. Hinodeya, in SF has a thin broth so it is possible to have a thin but rich broth. I did get the noodles exactly as specified (firm() and the quantity was good.
I'll give it another try, would come back again but try a different ramen. I had the White (shiro) ramen.
Ramen and other Japanese Food
I had a very enjoyable dinner here with co-workers. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. I love the inside decor and wondered if any of the shirts and posters are for sale. We came for the excellent ramen, fried chicken, shishito peppers, and beer. All of the dishes were presented well and our orders were delivered quickly. The food was fresh and flavorful and I look forward to returning to try other dishes.

This is my first post since Covid struck in March 2020 and Ippudo did not disappoint. I was craving for Ramen and this is the closest place that I have been to and like before. Ordered the classic Shiromaru and Karaage. Both were good! The broth was creamy, the noodles and toppings were awesoke. I’ve had better karaage elsewhere but I came for the ramen.

I tried this place after just getting back from Ippudo in both Osaka and Kyoto. The menu is much more extensive here at Berkeley. We tried the pork belly wraps, fried chicken, and spicy gyoza. The pork belly wraps were very very good. The chicken was also good as long as they give you the sweet dipping sauce.
But unfortunately the star of the show is the ramen, and that was tad disappointing. I know you shouldn’t compare ramen stateside to that of Japan, however I can’t help but to have had high hopes. The noodles were spot on. The toppings were also portioned similar to the bowls in Japan and really complimented the bowl overall. The most important part of the dish, IMO, is the broth. The broth was just not good enough. It was missing seasoning and bland. It had the flavor, but was missing the richness, creamy texture, and most importantly the saltiness. It’s almost as if they took the pot of broth from Japan and diluted it down with a couple of pitchers of water. It’s was still good, but just not as good as what Ippudo in Japan offered.
Food and service very good
Good ramen restaurant, Food very good as was the service. Very busy but quite relaxed. They don't take bookings so we had to queue but having been told it would be about 20 mins it only took 10. Waiter very friendly and efficient. Odd that they don't allow takeaways if you are eating in but will give you a box at your table to pack it and take it away yourself (we wanted to take food back to someone who couldn't make it). Overall, every one was happy.

From reading the reviews, we were unsure of experience. We went for late lunch and were able to get table right away. The service was excellent. The food was outstanding ! We had Cilantro Gyoza which was cooked perfectly. Also, I had the Karaka Spicy which was very hot, spiced properly, and noodles superb.

Came solo for lunch on a Friday.
No wait line.
Service is very good at this place, my waitress Rie paid attention to me closely. My water was filled promptly and she knew to get me my check before I even had to ask.
Food wise, a little disappointing. Having been to Ippudo in both Japan and Hong Kong. The Berkeley location is lacking some luster.
I think it has to do with food regulation and the temperature of the food being served at.
The bowl of noodles you get in Asia is sooo piping hot that you have to blow at the noodles to cool it down for the first several bites. The fat is rendered better at that temperature and thus more fragrant.
The broth here is just right to eat, so half way through the noodles, you are already seeing bits of solidified fat in the broth.
The noodles, even ordered at firm, is still lacking the bite I have experienced else where.
I am not sure I will be back.
I didn't know ramen could be this good!
I don't get excited about ramen - but this place had very flavorful broth. We tried the Akamaru - the modern take, they say - and the Karaka - a spicier broth. Choices of how well done you want the noodles. I thought it was delicious. We arrived early (5:15) for dinner before a 7:00 Berkeley Rep show, and got a table right away. There were probably 25 people waiting when we left at about 6:20. the pork bun is really light dough wrapped around richly flavored pork belly - great.
As for the beer, I had the Sapporo draft for $7 and it was about a 12 oz pour I think. My friend got the Suntory premium for $9, and the glass was about 8 oz. I'd go for the Sapporo again....
It is very noisy - about 68 to 74 decibels when I checked. But we'll go back. Delicious.
Nice ramen!
Heard of ippudo for a long time but this is the first time we came there. Always busy so you cannot get seated before all your friends come. But the ramen is good! I really enjoyed the soup. BTW, servers are friendly and handsome (^-^)
