Worth the price for the experience
Pricey but a wonderful experience and delicious food! We ordered a ton of small plates for a table of eight and were not disappointed. You will spend $$$$ but for a special event, it is wonderful!
Be the first to ReplyBest Yakitori place in Berkeley
Really enjoyed the experience, authentic Japanese Yakitori place, just like you would find in Japan! Food was great, but if you are vegetarian you might struggle to find items (not sure, did not check). Chicken and squid is amazingly good!
Be the first to ReplyAWFUL AWFUL RESTAURANT
AWFUL AWFUL SERVICE! -1 stars STAY AWAY FROM THIS TERRIBLE RESTAURANT! We waited for half an hour to sit and when we finally sat the server was annoyed from the start when we first had questions for the menu and she stormed off saying I'll give more time to us when we just had questions on the items. And when my friend asked for rice she barked at us that there was no rice but onigiri so we ordered two. We sat at 9 and it took an hour for lukewarm gyoza and soggy agedashi tofu and cold pork belly and when we asked for the rest of our items she barked again saying she put the order at the same time and the rice would come out when it came out. All of these items are skewers how did it take so long? When we finally talked to the manager he didn't care that our items were late and said he would "talk to the server" but that wasn't the issue she made the experience terrible and he didn't apologize for the behavior instead he took a defensive stance and crossed his arms and looked like again we were annoying them. He interrupted and didnt listen. He said the items were not going be charged but again that's not what the issue was and when he doesn't solve the issue he grabs all of the plates and tells us to get out!!! Not a problem! Because we will never be back to this AWFUL AWFUL place and being subjected to that behavior with being in the industry as well that's behavior that needs to be dealt with and the manager with the bald head and server need to be fired. From other reviews they are perfectly right and they have no empathy for their patrons. He said post this on yelp and Google and everywhere and let everyone see this so gladly Sir!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food but unprofessional
The food is delicious! But, you cannot navigate their website. They do not have a professional sign outside their doors, like every other restaurant ever. They do not have a sign to please wait to be served so you walk into confusion and a crowded space. Your server is nowhere to be found unless you ask to begin ordering and ask for some water. Nice service and people though, but not deserving of a higher rating overall.
Be the first to ReplyGood Japanese food
All the food I had here was really good for me, who grew up in Japan. The place was quite crowded when we went there in Saturday evening. The food is pricey and I personally would not go by myself. But if you want to experience a typical Japanese izakaya without going to Japan, this place is great.
Be the first to ReplyGood traditional food, don’t come if you’re in a hurry.
Good authentic Japanese yakitori. Service was good but not impressive. Very conveniently located to the new residence Inn in downtown Berkeley. Convenient place to hang out for an afternoon beer or eat. We were here during graduation week and reservations were required.
Be the first to ReplyBest Izakaya in the Bay Area
Where have you been Ippuku??? The absolute best Izakaya in the Bay Area... nothing comes close! If I could allocate 6 stars; I would! The ambiance, the menu, the quality of the food, everything!!! They know how to cook every single item on the menu; perfection in every bite! We tried almost everything; and it was so good, booked our next visit on our way out... Two observations: 1) there's no sign for this place; and 2) you can't book online! I always struggled to call during business hours that's why it took me so long to book. I would have otherwise visited months ago! We will return multiple times.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but pricey
I grew up in Japan and go to Japan on business trips at least once a year. I like the izakayas in Japan because they are good for a la carte items, beer or sake at reasonable price. Ippuku has half right - the food. The price is on the high side. I guess Berkeley is not the cheapest place to have to pay for store location. All the cooked items we ordered were very good. I can't vouch for rare/uncooked chickens dishes because, even in Japan, it's rare to eat rare chicken meat. If you don't mind the high price, this place has good atmosphere and food selection. Lastly, I don't know where they get the music they play in the restaurant but, to me, it sounded like karaoke recordings of amateur singers covering other peoples' songs.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Japanese Food but Expensive
Their Yakitori is great, it's as good as those izakaya restaurants in Japan. I also loved the Yukiotoko sake. The vibe is great, it feels like you are eating street food in an old Tokyo street. But service was too slow and it's pricey. $200 for 2 people, this is by far the most expensive izakaya restaurant I've been to. Quality is high, but not the best bang for your buck.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious!
I am no expert on food by any means but we can't stop talking about how delicious our meal was. We showed up without a reservation when they opened. We were seated on the booth side and told we could stay until 6:30 which was no problem for us. The wait staff is very nice and efficient. They were helpful in explaining the dishes. We ordered a variety and I fail to remember the exact names of things but the bacon wrapped mochi will live in my memory as a perfect bite! Fried chicken was good, pork belly, fried corn, soup with rice ball...we tried a lot and enjoyed everything. I cannot really do this place justice because I'm not a foodie by any means but highly recommend it for the lovely service, unique atmosphere and wonderful meal we shared.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Japanese a few steps from BART
Ippuku is a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant that does not include all kinds of Japanese foods. It does not do sushi, few noodles, no rice bowls (although they do great yaki onagiri (grilled rice balls). As is often the case in Japan, they work on doing a few things really well. They concentrate on yakitori (grilled chicken, including lots of unusual cuts) and other grilled items and have an extensive shochu collection by the glass, but also beer and some whisky, whisky cocktails and sake. Plenty of accompaniments, like nama-yuba (tofu skin). Great for casual drinking or a full dinner. We keep going returning every couple months and are never disappointed. It's

One of our friends is Japanese so she provided all the needed recommendations on what to order. The food was good but as a series of small plates, it was extremely helpful to have her insights. Food was tasty and the seating style authentic. We’ve been wanting to come here for a long time and am happy we did.
Be the first to ReplyVery authentic
This restaurant reminds me more of similar places in Japan than any other restaurant I have ever been in the US. That being said it focuses on one specific cooking method which is charcoal grilling and mostly focuses on chicken. The flavors are very earthy and smoky. You can try unusual things like chicken heart and gizzard but also really juicy thigh with leeks or breast with plum sauce. They also have wonderful rice porridge as well as grilled veggies. This is a great place if you want something authentic and you are willing to be adventurous
Be the first to ReplyOkay but not great
Service was quite good, food was quite average, value was quite poor. Nothing terrible, but no reason to go back.
