Long wait of for a table.
Long wait of food. Too hot inside. Terribly hard to find parking.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, service and atmosphere.
Loved the lighting and music. Ambience was perfectly situated between casual friend dinner/beer and formal/hip date night material--depends on your interests. I'd recommend anticipating a wait/booking a reservation ahead of time, though we were walk-ins and our wait was a lot shorter than we were initially told.

Be the first to Replyi love this izakaya place - such a rare find in berkeley!
i love this izakaya place - such a rare find in berkeley! it really feels like you are in japan inside the restaurant. the appetizers and creative skewers were the star of the night, better than the meat skewers. would recommend skipping on the omakase skewers. usually have to reserve in advance, but we were lucky to get a 7pm 2people spot on a weekday. service was great and were really patient at recommending dishes. their mayonnaise was FIRE (not like the typical kewpie mayo). prices were pretty reasonable for a cute date night.
Be the first to ReplyThe best place to eat by campus.
Easily. Corn fritters I season are my fav, the udon soup is a gift as is bathing mushroom. I don't do thee raw chicken, but there's so much more don't be scared off!!
Be the first to Replyi've eaten at Ippuku three times now.
so far, i haven't found a "bad" about it except it seems extremely popular but since i was alone all three times, wasn't much of an issue...ha! Overall, there's nothing to not like... the izakaya items are all delicious and well made. service is great and ordered items are delivered fast. besides the grilled items, i had a hard time not getting another order of gyoza the last two visits. i will probably forgo the the karaage and get the chicken ramen again just for the broth. not that the karaage isn't amazing? i wold onlyget it if i was sharing. it's a darn good portion and greg needs more room far all the tasties that are there. the one item i've really enjoyed were the pickles. there's usually a good variety and the shaved daikon and lotus root pickles were super tasty. besides the pickles, the gyoza and agedashi tofu have been my favorite bites. of the grill items, i'd say the two cartilage items have been my favorite although i still need to just order them all at once and go through each for comparison. it's a difficult task, i know... but i'll grit my way through it hard to find a critique other than maybe parking? but Ippiku is just a 5-8min walk from BART and so close to the Freight and Salvage. highly recommend

Come in before opening if you don't have a reservation or be prepared to wait 2 hours if you miss the first turn. The food came in pretty quickly, and while we thought the prices were pretty reasonable, it was really just simple food. There is absolutely no service here, and I'm not talking about cell reception. Once we put in our order, our server was a blur and made it almost a point to not check on us. This made it impossible to 1. Order additional drinks and food and 2. check on our food. We were here for an hour and a half with a good 15 mins of just waiting from our last skewers, when I finally was able to get our servers' attention. It turns out he forgot to input some of our items. All good, as long as it's not on the bill, right? While we had his attention, we were able to close out. This will most likely be our first and last time here.

Ippuku has some good food but it is definitely thriving due to its location because there's no way it would survive anywhere else. Unfortunately, it's doing so well that I doubt they'd fix the issues anything soon. First of all, it's SO hot in there - there's no AC or fans of any kind, which makes it so difficult to enjoy an izakaya. Second, because they're so busy, the staff are mean and never available. I do feel bad because they're clearly understaffed but I'm also a customer here to enjoy the dining experience yk? Once again, because they are so busy, the food comes out astronomically slowly. It took about 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes to get all of our food and we wanted to order more skewers after trying some but dreaded that wait time. The whole time, remember you're also sweating in the dimness. On to some pros, they finally have online reservations god bless. I used to spend my evenings calling them and hoping they'd pick up so I could place a reservation. They accept walk-ins but you'll be waiting a while - perhaps as much as it took to get our food lol. My menu highlights are the bacon mochi, chicken thigh, chicken oyster, and the scallion pancake. Mehs include the corn tempura and the squid. The definitely skip are the beef, the chicken patty stick, and the broth with rice ball. Ippuku you have good food especially for being in a collegetown but izakayas are about the experience and you give me nothing but stress!!
Be the first to ReplyFood is good Service is good But not recommended to come
Food is good Service is good But not recommended to come after 7pm on weekend, and after 7:30pm on weekday. We drive 45 mins to come to eat and waited 1 hour for seat. And they ran out of all the popular things like chicken gizzard, liver, skin, liver, cartilage and the raw chicken. I don't like what to order anymore. It's only 7:30pm on a Sunday. I don't mean that their food no good but they ran out of a lot of things so it's not worth the drive and wait anymore. I will only come before 6pm. Otherwise go to another restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Amazing chicken bits on sticks. Not very bright but that's alright, no need to have too much light when stuffing your face of different parts of the chicken.
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommend reserving a spot.
It's going to be easily 1hr+ wait otherwise. It may be less crowded during the weekdays. We had a couple of appetizers, cucumbers and seaweed; they are very small portions, FYI. But the seaweed texture was interesting, like caviars.Skewers are must items to order. Both chicken thighs and breasts melt as soon as you put them in your mouth.***Special: my husband and I eat a lot of raw fish and are not afraid of trying their RAW chicken finally! We got Tori Tataki, seared breast with ponzu sauce. The texture was pretty soft, and the sauce and searing taste enhanced the chicken flavor to a level you don't realize how raw it is. Believe me that we didn't have any stomach problems. The vibe and decor are great. Lots of variety selection of Japanese drinks are plus!
Be the first to ReplyThe food, service, and ambiance was amazing.
Great Yakitori. It's hard to find a good Yakitori in the Bay Area.
Be the first to ReplyI can't believe I haven't written a review yet.
I've been enjoying the food here since the day they opened. I love the mix of seating area, but my favorite spot is standing at the bar in the front, having the server pour me his favorite sake and eating there too. Do bring a hat because your head will get hot under the heater.
Be the first to ReplyThe menu items were unique.
The service was very good. I will definitely return again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and drinks.
Can get really busy. We put our names down and got a spot at the bar after about a half hour. You can order food at the bar so it wasn't a problem for us, it is a standing bar though. The atmosphere is great. Every dish was fantastic. The selection for drinks is great too. No complaints.

Pretty decent food! But the line is very long and it takes pre planning for this. However, once you are in, it is amazing!

It has a real japanese izakaya vibe however food was terrible. I got momo skewers which was half cooked, and thought to have some warm udin and ramen but that was just horrible, lack of salt, chicken was so blend, i couldnt eat more than two tablespoon of it. Overpriced for the quality. Karaage was too oily and they charge around $16 for like four pieces. I wouldnt mind paying that amount if the food taste good. Service was soso.. felt like waiter like to rush the customers. Overall. I like the vibe of the restaurant. Thats it. Lol

Terrible service everI've been there many times cuz I love their food but the service is terrible. I asked the waiting time if I get there now and some questions more on a phone call, but the server just hung up while I was talking and she literally ignored me and didn't listen at all. Just she said 'I can not guarantee the waiting time, you should come in person, bye.' I was disappointed and so pissed off. I hope the restaurant respect to customers. She had no respect to customers at all.
Be the first to ReplyLoved the decor and the vibe of this place.
It reminded me of Japan and how I miss visiting there. IMO, some skewers were better than the others. The beef tongue was quite good and juicy, while the chicken liver was quite dry. I also didn't taste the charcoal, which was typically used in authentic Japanese yakitori restaurants. The cooked food was decedent. Overall, it's a great place to hang out with friends with a plethora of sake options.
Be the first to ReplyThis is my absolute favorite izakaya place in the Bay Area.
We're here 1-2 times a month! The waitlist system can be a hit or miss and from a customer's POV, it can be a little frustrating. No electronic check in of any type and wait times can either pretty good or pretty bad. I've waited from 20-100 mins. Good thing is they have the bar which is first come, first serve & you can order food items. All their skewers are grilled FRESH, which I think is what differs them from competition. Other izakaya places are parcooked and then heated up to full doneness on the grill, which makes some of the food not completely hot. Here at ippuku, they come out steaming hot. Recs: -karaage, teba-corn tempura -chicken heart skewers -chicken neck skewers -nori wrapped mochi -squid ink rice Price tag is a little steep but it's just so good! The service can be inconsistent. Sometimes we won't get waters or the warm towels or their complimentary cabbage+mayo dish. And if they're especially busy, the female waiter will aggressively tell you that she's not your waiter and to make your request with your waiter, lol. It's ok...I've been a waitress in my early days and I understand the stress.
Be the first to ReplyThis place does not deserve ratings it has.
The host was acting too much of a douche bag. I was literally the second guest in line, but because my friend was still parking, she wouldn't not seat me and that's not all. After my friend came back and I waited outside for good 3-5 min, she acted like we are branded new guests and told us "it's looking like you'll have to wait another 15min" or so while forgetting the fact that she promised to seat us after all of our part arrives (noted there's literally no one outside waiting this place is not even Kiraku level popular). The fact that she didn't even show one bit of empathy for making me stand outside and wait, that's what ticked me off the most.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a must visit if you're looking for authentic
This place is a must visit if you're looking for authentic Japanese skewers. All things on the menu are delicious and usually come with 2 skewers. Although the pricing is on the high end, you're getting quality ingredients cooked to perfection. Reservations in advance are a must.
Be the first to ReplyCalled about a week ahead to get a reservation.
Spot is very easy to miss because the outside is very obscure. Upon entering you see the bar which looks very authentic and similar to the ones in Japan. I suggest coming right when they open because right at 5pm people are flowing in and all the tables were filled by 530. Each order comes with 2 skewers. Price was pretty reasonable considering how many plates we ordered. I wish they had beef skewers because basically all their meat skewers are chicken. My favorites were the grilled squid, sweet omelette, and the chicken meatball. Service is definitely slow cause all the waiters are running around. They never cleared our plates from the table until the very end which was frustrating because we had very little space. And their water cups are teeny tiny. So we had to constantly ask for more water. Wish they would just leave a full pitcher so we wouldn't need to bother them. Not getting water is a serious pet peeve of mine while dining at a restaurant.
