J Sheekey was most definitely the highlight meal of my recent trip to London. It is the restaurant I was least looking forward to visiting, but the proximity to the theatre district and show we were seeing (Tina, The Musical .... which I HIGHLY recommend!), it just made sense. From the moment we stepped in not only did the hostess ask if we were seeing a show, but took interest in asking 'what' show (I noticed that this wasn't exclusive to us, as she asked people ahead of us as well). It's a little touch that in some instances may go unnoticed, but for me, it is just that little extra warmth you receive throughout London. We were seated toward the front of the restaurant in a very comfortable banquet with plenty of space between tables (one side banquet, one side a chair). The restaurant itself is just old-school beautiful. Service was impeccable and fast (to ensure there was plenty of time to make the show), but not so fast that you feel rushed. It is as if you know you're in good hands. Ordered a bunch of smaller dishes off the a la carte menu including - - Oysters. I didn't taste any but my niece said they were among the best she had during our trip. The finger bowl they put along side the Oysters and mussels are a very nice touch. - Tuna Tartare. I wish I had taken more time to ensure the lighting was optimal for my photos because this dish was not only beautifully presented (the edible flowers on top were a lovely touch), but it was possibly the best tuna tartare I've ever had (and tuna tartare is my go-to appetizer whenever I'm dining out). - Wild Mushroom Risotto. My order was the smaller portion, which was quite generous. It has just a touch of black truffle which sometimes can be overwhelming. But J Sheeky got it just right. I'd have a difficult time not ordering this again. It was absolutely delicious. - Steamed Shetland Mussels. A little chili, red miso, and lime broth. My niece loved it. - Creamed Spinach. And good creamed spinach, at that. - We finished with the Welsh Rarebit and a cheese plate. It was my first time having Welsh Rarebit, and I have to admit to being confused when they put the bottle of Worcester on the table. I wasn't sure what to expect with the Welsh Rarebit. I was thinking cheese toast, but it is really much more complex than that, and I'll admit that I have since gone down a rabbit hole (pun intended) reading about it. Definitely going to give it a try on my own. As for the cheese plate, it was a lovely combination of Montgomery Cheddar, Sinodun Hill and Cashel Blue. I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Neal's Yard Dairy (home of the Sinodun Hill) when I visited Borough Market. There are several places where I live where I have access to some of the Dairy's Cheese, and they'll be moved into regular rotation on my cheese plates! 3 glasses of wine and a coffee brought the total bill to $242.49. It was well worth that price and J Sheekey will be on my must-visit list next time I'm back in London.
