The ambience is terrible.
The food is unique and great. But the ambience is terrible. Servers are too brisk and not very helpful. Had to ask for napkins and fork. (I use chop sticks, but come on - a fork please.) And you are timed out! My daughter came a hundred miles to celebrate my 81st birthday! After ordering two carafes of Saki, several appetizers, and two dinners we were told - "Order more food or you have to leave. We have to clear the table." Wha-a-a--at???!!! It's not a Japanese thing because when I was in Tokyo they never rushed us and were very friendly. Grow up, Jin Sho!
Be the first to ReplyA good selection of fish for sushi
We ordered hot foods in addition to sushi, which is the main reason we wanted to try the restaurant. Sushi was very good. Wide variety of fish to pick from, plus rice was properly seasoned. Hamachi collar & cod was also very good. Tempura and corn tempura was OK, but not great. A wide selection of sake to pair with the food. Only complaint was their closing time of 8:30pm. We got there at 7:30 and by 8:15 they were doing last call. We tried to order another round of sake, but was told that everything was closed down. Otherwise service was good. Will try to go back again.

The sushi didn't blow my mind, but the miso cod did. Get it. Others got the salmon and loved it too. So although this restaurant appears to be considered primarily a sushi place, I recommend having some sushi as an appetizer and heading for the mains.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service, but unpleasant ambiance
Jin Sho is an excellent Japanese restaurant, with some unusual and interesting variations on the typical menu, all of which is high quality, well prepared, tastes great, and served by very courteous staff.
My complaint is that I expect a reasonably peaceful dining experience in a Japanese restaurant. The background music at Jin Sho interferes with that. The music is similar to that cropping up in a lot of restaurants these days, with a driving โhurry up and leaveโ percussive rhythm. In addition to that being generally unpleasant, the acoustics in the restaurant are such that the lively ambient noise of the full dining room drowns out any of the melodic/musical elements of what is being played. So all you can actually hear is the โboom-chicka, boom-chickaโ of only the percussion and bass. This is particularly annoying. I have no problem at all with dance club music, but I prefer to hear it in a dance club, not a restaurant, and certainly not a Japanese one. I would go to Jin Sho much more regularly, but instead only do so from time to time because of the trade off between its really great food/service and its awful background music.
Nobu is even worse by the way. The percussion and bass is so loud that there is no semblance of music and it interferes with conversation. That is why I donโt go there at all anymore.
Slow service but fresh food
Fresh was the word for all items. The black cod was particularly outstanding but everything else was also good and worthy of reordering. We had two rolls, ceviche, seaweed salad, and the eggplant. They were followed by the complimentary strawberry panna cotta.
Luckily we did not have to rush at lunch because although the food came quickly once we had ordered, the wait staff had more customers than they could get to right away.
Great Japanese Food
1st time at Jin Sho. Enjoyed the prefix dinner including the Miso Black Cod. Flavors were spot on for all of the dishes. We liked the tempura corn appetizer but it was a bit on the $ high side. Dessert selections are great and delicious. Overall service was pretty good too. Would recommend.
great fish
We order OMAKASAE, a little bit disappointed about the rock shrimp(too much breading and just a tinybit which is not worth at all. Also the black cod with miso, which means the pacific cod. I really love their Aji, you can taste the rich of fish oil and this is the highlight of the whole meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Japanese food
Jin Sho on California St in Palo Alto is the best Japanese restaurant in the area. We had the tempura (shrimp and veggies), the grilled eggplant with miso, sushi (get the deluxe - it's worth a little extra), and 2 desserts (limoncello cake and a matcha cake), among other things. All were truly excellent. It may be a bit expensive, but the quality is extraordinary.
Be the first to ReplyBasic Japanese fare
This place was started by ex Nobu chefs and although the food is good the ambiance seems old and in need of a refurbishment. They only prepare 10 bento boxes for lunch every day and we were fortunate to be one of the ten. We stayed with Miso soup and then the bento box came. It had a small salad with a vinaigrette dressing not the usual creamy sesame that you see in most Japanese restaurants which I prefer. There was a generous portion of vegetable tempura and two pieces of salmon and rice with some pickles in the middle. The salmon was not fillets but cuts that were from the head or tail and had bones making it a bit harder to find the flesh and to eat.
Be the first to ReplyGood sushi; great to sit at the sushi bar and watch the chef interactions
Excellent sushi and a really fun people watching spot: both the highly varied guests and the interactions between the extremely experienced sushi chefs. Recommended.
Be the first to ReplyVery expensive for the quality and bad service
We chose to eat in this restaurant because the reviews were good, but actually we didn't enjoy it at all. We ordered just 4 dishes and the last two of them arrived an hour later than the other two, so someone of us had already finished eating while two others have been waiting another hour to start. We chose some avocado rolls from the menu and the amount of avocado was small compared to other restaurants. Having to pay the tip in this situation has been really annoying.
