A Smoking Good Time
What is unique about Jua is its use of a wood-burning oven to cook many of its dishes. This is the first sign that Jua is not your typical Korean restaurant. Friendly and knowledgeable service that is not too stuffy for a fine-dining, food experience. Delicious, Korean-inspired food with French/Japanese influences. Innovative take on some traditional dishes. The use of the wood burning oven to impart smokiness onto some of the dishes make them delicious and unique. Will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.

We went to Jua for my birthday while visiting New York City in September. I am still thinking of that unforgettable celebratory dinner. While Los Angeles and its Korea town still offers perhaps the most comprehensive and stellar Korean restaurants, everything Korean is on a decidedly steep up-curve: movies, music, literature, and food. This restaurant is among the very best I’ve tried. Starting with a caviar kim (kimbap) which is a beautiful circle of crispy, crunchy seaweed wrapped sushi-style around a red-hued puff of rice filled with kimchi and scallops, and topped with caviar, this visual puzzle had an incredible mouth-feel, playing on my mind as to what I just ate. So delectable and indescribably delicious. The seven-course prix-fixe menu is sensational, from the steamed stripe jack through a highly original creamy jook, smoked mackerel, wood-grilled galbi, and a mixture of condiments and pickles that look like an Abstract Expressionist canvas. This Michelin-starred restaurant won’t disappoint. And having Jake as our waiter was an additional plus. Sometimes the more exotic and unexpected a dish is, the less explanation is given. But Jake patiently explained every flourish of this highly original, sensual pleasure of a dining experience.

This was our last dining experience on this trip to NYC, and the best. Korean cuisine has stormed the nation, and trying to comprehend and dissect the food is next to impossible. Most Korean restaurants I’ve tried do their take on steak or chicken. They’re not bad, yet nothing too startling. Jua knocked my socks off!
A former chef at the renowned and Michelin starred Jungsink in Tribeca, the owner of Jua uses French technique with traditional Korean ingredients. On the seven course set menu, there wasn’t a miss. Everything was a wow, with my favorite the first dish served, Caviar Kim. Truly, the food is too complex to describe, but when paying over $300 for two persons at most good restaurants in NYC, Jua stands out as one of the best. If you can get in, we were on a waiting list, go, go, go.
Happy Birthday
Great location near gramercy tavern in a non descriptive building. Staff are warm and welcoming. We presented our vaccine records and were seated in the middle of the 15 tables dining room. It is a rainy Thursday evening and the dining room were soon filled to its capacity. It is a fixed menu evening so we don’t have to worry about ordering. It $120 pp plus $90 pp for wine pairing. Two of us are not drinkers so we passed the wire pairing and went for the cocktails. I had the davin Kentucky bourbon which was very good. The starter was a caviar dish which was amazing. My daughter gave me a lesson about the NYC Asian cuisine and it’s popularity and prominence in recent years.
We flew in from the west coast for my daughter’s birthday. She was so touched and surprised when she saw us in the dining room, the maitre d had to give my daughter a few moment to collect herself. It was totally worthy the trip. We had a great time. The food was great. The setting was warm and cozy. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience
New year’s eve dinner
Reviews for now will focus on 3 Parts
1. How they deal with the pandemic situation
2. Service and how it feels for Europeans (as this is what I am)- differences
3. Food, glorious food
This was our New Year’s Eve night- we struggled to get a table in a nice restaurant as we did not understand how it works in the states and especially RESY which is owned by AMEX and prioritises their card holders- I got this table via my banks concierge service only
The restaurant is light and airy and they have spaced tables out a bit, vaccination and ID is checked and all wear masks, so 4/5 for part 1
The welcome was warm and we were seated immediately - the hostess of our table explained the menu and its exciting facets well and they have a sommelier- he happily helped with a bottle recommendation and a plus for making the bottle last throughout the menu; there was also an endless supply of sparkling water….
Tipping is explained and needed as anywhere in the states
This was the best meal we had but obviously was not their normal tasting menu as high end components like truffle and caviar state which was reflected in s higher price but normal for New Year’s Eve menus around the globe
The opening was a truffle bonbon and a complimentary glass of fizz - nice 9/10
First course proper caviar with a Koran velute which finished the champagne nicely
Then there were some crudities called bang eo- very refreshing and light 7/10
Then came a scampi tail on an Asian spinach velute one of my absolute favourites 10/10
The maritime theme continued with black cod which we nicely done but a bit mixed for my taste good but not great 5/10
My favourite this evening was a fusion dish - Truffle Jjajangmyeon - this blew me away 10/10 and more
Then came duck dish to close the mains which was as great and any Asian duck I have eaten 9/10
Two sweets to close Goguma and truffle - sweet potato ice cream with truffle this was cool experimental and refreshing and deserves 10/10
The last item was a praline which was a tad to sweet but by the time I was so full that my tastebuds possible needed refocusing
We enjoyed our evening at JUA and were happy to pay the check- New York is expensive and this 1 star in NYC buys you three in France or Italy - worth it yes no doubt- not over the others but in comparison with other similar establishments in town
More international then Korean
Tasting menus nothing really to do with Korean cosine. It was testy enough to enjoy but I wouldn’t go back. Just nice to have it once

We loved our dinner here. The service was excellent — Korean elegance paired with thorough competence. Except there was one waiter who was really bad about keeping his mask on and who just seemed a bit hostile with the guests.
The cocktails ranged from very good to outstanding. The drink selection was broad and impressive. But most of all the food was innovative and substantial. The decor and ambience worked really well with the cuisine. We plan to come back.
Absolutely amazing
It's hard to explain how good JUA is. The drinks are delightful concoctions, and the service is impeccable. But the food and each course of the tasting menu is ridiculously and impressively amazing. The chef masterfully tickles your taste buds with his gastronomical prowess, carefully embedding different flavors into each dish and innovatively combining ingredients to form a final product. Each bite keeps you guessing where each kick or each sensation comes from. JUA prepares its art with French technique while imbuing Korean nostalgia, and ultimately beckons you to come again.
Be the first to ReplyJUA served a 6 courses prix-fixe with $85pp.
JUA served a 6 courses prix-fixe menu of wood-fired Korean dishes with a price of $85. The chef was the former executive chef of Jungsik, two-Michellin starred restaurant in TriBeCa.
The decor is elegant and the ambiance is romantic, a perfect place for couples. We did the reservation via Resy with 20% prepay of total amount.
The food was overall delicate and delicious with reasonable price and portion. Our favorites were the Mushroom & Egg and the Chicken.
The Mushroom & Egg was one of the best steamed eggs we had recently. It was so flavorful and well-cooked. There were chicken breast and thigh, smoked and grilled properly with aioli sauce. However, the skin was kind of greasy for us.
The Domi, sashimi with Japanese sea bream didn't surprise us and was the dish what we don't recommend.
Their dessert, Black Sugar Bingsu was a great ending. The shaved ice was creamy and the pearl and sweet potato cubes were great additions to it.
Overall, it was a great and decent experience and worth a try.
