VERY SALTY.
Let's start with that. VERY VERY SALTY. The portions are big and for sharing. We had the stuffed burger with salad and fries and it tasted like SALT. We were very disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyGenerous portion and hearty food.
Loved our experience in Kafana. We have never tried Serbian food prior to this, and the staff recommended Svinjska plećka (braised pork shoulder) and Jagnjeća kapama (lamb and spinach stew). The pork shoulder was very tender. It balanced the mashed potato and the tanginess of the coleslaw salad. The stew was homey. We also got a cheese pie. For two people, we couldn't even finish all of our food and had leftovers to take home! This is definitely a hidden gem and I will be coming back!
Be the first to Replyomg!!! Amazing! The food was phenomenal and service great.
If going with a group do the pre fixe menu. The food keeps coming and coming so don't fill up on one plate. Cash only so bring cash. Everything is delicious so don't sleep on one thing they bring you. If driving leave yourself plenty of time to look for parking because parking in the area is rough. Make a reservation!!

We came to Kafana looking for something new, and we weren't disappointed. Great meats, the beans and sausage was a standout, as well as the spinach pie and pork chop. Dessert was great as well, we liked the traditional walnut dessert that was light and sweet. While the restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, it's worth the trip!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, great interior, and a very nice wine list.
Favorites are the šopska salad, pljeskavica burger, and rakija :)

After one year later, someone I know told me how bad this place is. They said they now believe me. People that works there have bad attitude as if you go there for free food. They also never reached out to me to find resolution. Bad management and tasteless food and horrible service. Bad.

Unfortunately, I have the worst dining experience with Kafana . First of all ; they weren't welcoming in the beginning they didn't smile or said welcome plus the music and ambience pretty weak . Second of all ; the selection of the menu was tiny. Final part ; the food obviously wasn't good enough to fill me up. the burek wasn't fresh they heated the burek and served us ( it wasn't tasty anyway ) I wouldn't recommend it. The cevapi was okay it comes with 10 pieces with non fresh bread. Overall disappointed by everything.
Be the first to ReplySo happy we found this place.
We'd been craving this cuisine since our trip to the Balkans last year and it did not disappoint. The food is excellent and the portions are big. You will leave happy and stuffed. We recommended the spinach pie and cevapi. They also have a great wine list. We will be back.

What a great restaurant! We were a party of six so we had the prix fixed menu which was outstanding! Starting with the homemade bread and pepper dip to the tray of desserts at the end. An enormous amount of delicious food, one after the other. The service was amazing. The ambience was delightful. So pleased we "took a chance" on this place. Do yourself a favor and eat here!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and service.
One of my go to places when I'm in NYC. Ajvar Pepper Spread with homemade bread is so good!
Be the first to ReplyWow just amazing.
My friend from Bulgaria and I were searching for a good Balkan food spot and this was just the place. I ordered the Ćevapi and it just reminded me of my trip to Croatia. The meat was delicious and full of flavor. My friend ordered the Sopska Salad and some other dish that started with an S ... I forgot what it was called but it was super good. The ambiance was very nice and I loved the vibes. Def recommend to anyone who is craving Balkan food or just want to try it out.
Be the first to ReplyWe really liked the food, we had the mix grill for two
We really liked the food, we had the mix grill for two people, all the meat was really tasty and with a smoky woody flavor: beef liver, pork chop, beef cheek, sausage, prune/cheese/walnut wrapped in bacon. Really good flavors. But it does not come with any sides (well technically the meat lays on green salad but it's not a lot of salad and there's no starch). They also bring a basket of bread with a little red pepper dip as an appetizer (for free), which is nice. But: the service is slow and a bit rude. Also: it's cash only. Also: almost 9$ for soggy fries is definitely not worth it. Also: they're playing funky music pretty loud on the background, it doesn't really match the "romantic" atmosphere of the restaurant with flowers on the tables and little candles. In short: order the mix grill, don't order the fries, and do take out :)
Be the first to ReplyYummy yummy Serbian food.
Cash only. Meat and cheese intensive. I recommend the cheese pie, cevapi sausages, and Sarma/stuffed pepper with spiced minced meat.
Be the first to ReplyCame here with my boyfriend as he is Serbian and wanted us
Came here with my boyfriend as he is Serbian and wanted us to try some Serbian food. He ordered for all of us, but got a mix of stuff based on the waiters recommendation. Started off with some bread and ivar for the table. Then got a slice of spinach pie which was a very hearty size portion and very heavy. It was bready, cheesy and spinachy. Would probably pass on this next timeNext got the roasted red peppers which was super tasty. The peppers basted naturally sweet and tender. We got 2 large plates of meat, the pork shoulder and a mix of meats (pork chop, cevapi, kobasice) which was all nice as well. They came with some sides of salad, pickled cabbage and mashed potatoes which were all super tasty. Got some crepes for dessert which were a good way to end the night. Overall a very hearty meal but would definitely come back

I came to visit my daughter from Boston and ate here once then came back to get a meal to bring back home. The food is wonderful and Dimitri is the best. He recognized us from the night before and brought us out drinks (he remembered what we had) while we were waiting for the takeout. Thank you Dimitri.

BEST Serbian/Balkan cuisine in NYC! Must try! I grew up on Balkan food in Slovenia and this has been my go-to since moving to United States! Thank you to the Kafana staff!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible place for good wine, food, and atmosphere.
The place is simply designed but the dishes are authentic and absolutely delicious. The mixed grill platter has a variety of stuffed sausages and other cuts of meats, the cabbage salad is pickled just right (not too tart or sweet), and the whole grilled fish is so fresh and comes with a tasty olive oil & garlic dressing. The wines are Serbian/Croatian and range is prices from $35-$290+. Absolutely recommend for date or hanging with friends, especially while their outdoor seating is still open!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely incredible.
From the main to the sides, everything was done so well and with such care. The sausage was some of the best I've had in nyc, and spinach pie was out of this world. Absolutely worth the trip over there, highly recommend

Had the mešano meso--a mixed grill for two--and grilled vegetables, all of which I believe were GF, since everything was grilled. Very good food -- and a lot of it. Fun servers and a great atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing.
